Bij Ace's Hardware is wat meer info te vinden over de AMD Spitfire en Thunderbird processors. Het goede nieuws is dat de Spitfire op de Windows Hardware Engineering Conference eind deze maand zal worden geïntroduceerd, waarna deze begin mei verkrijgbaar zal zijn. De CPU zal in totaal 192kB on-die cache krijgen, waarvan 128kB L1 en 64kB L2. Het slechte nieuws is dat er helaas geen mogelijkheid zal zijn om door middel van Slotkets de Spitfire op je Slot-A plank te prikken. Daar zul je dus helaas een Socket-A moederbord voor moeten regelen.
Heise.de weet ons te vertellen dat AMD de 1GHz Slot-A Thunderbird (het grote broertje van de Spitfire met 256kB on-die L2 cache en koperen interconnects) in juni in Dresden in massaproductie zal gaan. De eerste Thunderbirds zullen volgens geruchten echter al eind mei leverbaar worden in zowel Socket-A als Slot-A versies.

Thunderbird, and a forthcoming value chip from AMD -- code-named Spitfire -- will both use a new packaging called Socket A, although Thunderbird will also be available in AMD's current Slot A packaging. There may be some initial shortages of socketed motherboards, according to industry experts, including Feibus.
Rallying the infrastructure players, who include motherboard and chipset makers, can be difficult. However, getting them behind Thunderbird and Spitfire is "a much smaller challenge than the original (Athlon) infrastructure was to set up last fall," Feibus said. "At this point, it's a coordination of people that are bought in."
