TgF schrijft dat ATI de Rage 6, waarschijnlijk een geduchte concurent voor de GeForce II en de Voodoo5 familie, aan ons zal laten zien op 24 april, precies 1 dag eerder dan NVidia met de GeForce II.

Speaking to Reuters, CFO Jim Chwartacky said: "We will be announcing a high-end product that reinforces and extends our reach into the higher margin part of the PC market."

Not that we're entirely surprised. Surely Chwartacky is referring to the upcoming Rage 6, which the company has already scheduled a 24 April (the first day of the WinHEC event) booze-up during which company president and CEO K Y Ho will unveil the next-generation chip.

Some of the technologies Rage 6 will contain were unveiled at last month's Game Developer Forum, though they were rather overshadowed by Microsoft's X-Box launch. ATI engineers showed of their Charisma Engine transform and lighting system and its Pixel Tapestry Architecture.

Paul DeMone van RealWorld Technologies heeft het vervolg op zijn Intel Willamette artikel online gezet. In dit tweede deel krijgen we een technisch verhaal over de Willamette en features zoals de trace cache en de double pumped ALU. Wie daar gaan trek in heeft kan meteen naar pagina 7 skippen, waar Paul zijn voorzichtige verwachtingen over de performance van Willy uitspreekt:

I would go so far as estimate that Willamette might achieve 20 to 30% higher performance than P6 on a clock for clock basis on most integer code. Including the 50% or more higher clock rate, that is equivalent to an absolute integer performance approaching twice that of the P6 in the same manufacturing process. That increase seems staggering, but it is much less, for example, than the over three times higher system bus bandwidth advantage Willamette enjoys over current P6 implementations. On memory performance limited code the Willamette might dominate the P6 even more.

The Willamette is a serious threat to end the success AMD has been enjoying with its K7 Athlon device in the high end of the x86 processor marketplace. It will likely support clock frequencies about 50% higher than P6 and 30% higher than K7 in a similar process (although AMD will soon benefit from a switchover to a copper interconnect based 0.18 um). Everything else being equal, Willamette will likely enjoy at least a similar level of clock normalized performance or IPC advantage running general purpose integer code over K7 that the K7 enjoys over the P6 core. The Willamette will likely be larger than the K7 core in similar processes, although not dramatically so. The trace cache occupies a great deal more area than the 16 Kbyte I-cache in the P6 and maybe 50% or more area than the 64 KB I-cache in the K7. However, this is balanced by the fact that Willamette likely devotes less area to x86 instruction parsing, alignment and decoding than the K7 or even the P6. Willamette runs at very high clock rates and will likely consume at least twice as much power as P6, or somewhere in region of 60 Watts or more

De kabelexploitant die haar internetservice onder de naam Wanadoo gaat aanbieden wil slechts een snelheid van een 33K6 telefoonmodem garanderen voor het Cable Basic product. Snelheden van 2,0 KB/s zijn daarentegen de dagelijkse praktijk. Voor een kabelproduct is dit bedroevend traag.

Via JC News'n'Links kwam ik bij deze handige tabel met specificaties (voltage, die-size, hoeveelheid transistors, stroomverbruik, warmteproduktie e.d.) van de Pentium III, Celeron, Athlon, K6-x, Alpha 21264, G4 en G3. Uit de gegevens valt o.a. op dat de G4 relatief weinig transistors heeft en erg weinig energie verbruikt. De Pentium III heeft het grootste aantal transistors (vanwege de on-die cache) en de Alpha 21264 is een regelrechte straalkachel .

Hans de Vries (Nederlander?) heeft op het message board van JC een interessante posting geplaatst met een vergelijking tussen de AMD Thunderbird en Intel Willamette. Volgens hem is de T-Bird op 1,2GHz sneller dan Willy op 1,5GHz:

The branch miss prediction penalty is much higher on the Willamette. The Trace Cache doesn't help that much. The Instruction Cache on the Athlon contains partly pre-decoded instructions as well (like the K6 did) Each instruction byte has 3 additional bits to help accelerate branch prediction and instruction alignment of x86 instructions for the decoders.

The sustained ALU trough put of the Willamette is higher but can contain more depencies and may actually end up somewhat lower. The Willamette ALU's don't perform all integer instructions themselves. (Shifts are much slower on the Willamette than on the P6 according to Intel)

The databand width to the data cache is higher on the Thunderbird because it has 3 Address Generators which can do both loads and stores. The Willamette has a single load address generator and a single store address generator.

Intel says: The Willamette will be 30% faster then Coppermine. In my opinion this is a 1.5 Willamette compared with a 1 GHz Coppermine. Thus 30% faster with equal semiconductor process and not with equal frequencies.

Bovenstaande speculaties zijn natuurlijk vaag zolang er nog weinig over de Willamette bekend is (bijv. in hoeverre Willy voordeel/nadeel heeft van de trace cache). Meer daarover lees je in de reakties op deze thread.

Uit onderzoek van de Automatiseringsgids is gebleken dat een groot aantal Nederlandse websites met Microsoft server software 'lek' zijn omdat serverbeheerders bekende exploits in de webserver niet hebben dichtgepatched:

Door het intikken van een 'opgerekte URL', zeg maar de naam van de internetsite, kwam de broncode op het scherm. Zo kon onder meer de site van Ohra, Wehkamp, Primafoon, Free Record Shop en PinkRoccade gekraakt worden. Bij Wehkamp was het zelfs mogelijk wachtwoorden te achterhalen.

Microsoft zegt dat het om een fout gaat, waarvan de oplossing al is verstuurd. Alleen hebben sommige bedrijven de extra informatie nog niet in hun computers verwerkt.

Fujitsu heeft een nieuwe harddisk media technologie ontwikkelt waarmee 300Gb data op een vierkante inch geparkeerd kan worden. De datadichtheid van deze 'LEXIS' technologie is drie keer zo hoog als wat met huidige technologiën mogelijk is:

Fujitsu has succeeded in developing a new type of recording media, called LEXIS (Layer Exchange Interaction Stabilized), which has the potential to achieve three times the density of the current theoretical limit governed by thermal fluctuation of magnetization. The new media technology will be used to expand the capacity of hard-disk drives (HDDs) for information storage devices for computers and home information electronics products. Using the new media technology together with a newly developed head, Fujitsu has already demonstrated a recording density of 56Gb/sq. inch -- the world's best performance as of today.

With this density, a 3.5-inch HDD containing two disks could store about 30 movies in DVD-quality video. Moreover, when used together with high-output heads, the new media technology has the potential to achieve a recording density of 300Gb/sq.in.

The details of the new media technology will be announced at the International Magnetics Conference in Toronto, Canada, which will take place from April 9. A portion of this technology is based on research sponsored by ASET (the Association of Super-Advanced Electronics Technologies).

De jongens van HardOCP deden onderzoek naar de overklokbaarheid van de nieuwe Celeron II. Een 533 modelletje kon moeiteloos naar 8*100MHz overgeklokt worden, dus potentieel heeft de processor zeker. De prestaties blijven in tegenstelling tot de oude Celeron (in vergelijking met de PII en Katmai) wel duidelijk achter bij de Coppermine, maar desondanks heeft de Celeron II een zeer goede price/performance (thanks GaMeOvEr voor de tip):

Well, we could say the Celeron-II smokes more pole than a prom queen, but we won't go there. Why not? Because it is not true. Seriously, we see that the Celeron comes up short when compared directly to the Coppermine, but it is far from a loser. The CPU still has great OverClocker potential and I see it making it into a many boxes that "used to be 300A" system. Hell, for the price you cannot beat it.

I have a feeling this will be the next bargain basement CPU that will fall exactly where Intel wants it to. I think that the last Celeron performed much better overall than they had really anticipated. Our opening statement about the Celeron-II being "neutered" is probably a very good way to sum it up if you are drinking beer with your buds and talking about puters. (which is what HardOCP was modeled after anyway) I doubt Intel wanted another 300A on the market, let's face it, Intel KNEW better this time than to cut us loose with the good stuff.

The Tech Zone meende een review online te moeten zetten van de errug relaxte Plextor PlexWriter 12/4/32 SCSI cd fikker. De reviewer testte de mogelijkheid om met behulp van het (in de USA) bijgeleverde CDRes-Q, een programma die je harde schijf backupped op 1 of meerdere cd's.

Once you have the system able to boot into the FAT 16 drive with CDRes-Q on it, you may then run the CDRes-Q application from there. You should have a few blank CD's handy now depending on the size of your targeted backup partition or disk. Once you have launched the application you will follow several prompts to create an image from either a partition or a disk, or to verify the disks (target drive and destination drive). Once you verify the media and are ready to create a CD image, select the drive you wish to write from, and the destination drive (the CD-RW) and answer yes to whether to use compression (high), spanning (multiple CD's) and then proceed with the image dump.

It took about twenty minutes to fill the first disk, and all told we needed four CD's to complete this process in about 90 minutes. The disks should be labeled properly and stored in a safe place once you have completed the process. I waited a day and used a test system for a total restore from scratch. I then decided to test the restore process, so I used the boot floppy I created to boot the system up with to initiate this process. You copy the CDRes-Q.exe from the CD to the floppy and run the recovery from there.

Ook Anand heeft een 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 demo te zien gekregen door 3dfx, waarvan zijn verslag hier te vinden is. Hieronder een stukkie over de performance die je kunt verwachten met FSAA enabled:

According to 3dfx, depending on the final clock speed of the VSA-100 chip itself, the Voodoo5 5500 AGP will feature a fill rate of anywhere between 667 – 733 Megapixels/s. For the sake of comparison, a Voodoo3 3500 (the fastest Voodoo3 available) has a fill rate of 183 Megapixels/s and a GeForce 256 SDR/DDR has a 480 Megapixels/s fill rate. So right out of the box, the Voodoo5 5500 should be faster than any currently available card, but that’s without FSAA enabled.

Enabling 2 sample FSAA forces the VSA-100 to render each frame twice thus taking two samples, effectively cutting the fill rate in half. So the 667 – 733 MP/s range has now been reduced to 333 – 366 MP/s. Even at 2 sample FSAA, there are still some “jaggies,” which are noticeable but there is a definite improvement over having no FSAA at all.

Can you guess what happens when you enable 4 sample FSAA?

Enabling 4 sample FSAA forces the VSA-100 to render each frame four times, thus taking four samples, which effectively reduces the fill rate to 25%. That impressive 667 – 733 MP/s range is now at 166 – 183 MP/s, about the speed of a Voodoo3 3000 – 3500.

For you Voodoo3 owners, you should be able to run at your current performance level but with 4 sample FSAA enabled. Or if you want more performance, you could always shift down to 2 sample FSAA and get a nice performance boost over the Voodoo3 3500 while improving on the image quality, although not getting rid of all of the “jaggies.”

GaMeOvEr schrijft dat Tom weer tijd heeft gevonden om een review te schrijven, ditmaal over de Asus V6800 Deluxe en de Creative Labs Annihilator Pro:

Asus is offering a nice package in the AGP-V6800 as it has GeForce DDR performance, dependable quality, video in/out and ships with good drivers/utilities. However, if you want this excellent package, you're going to pay for what you get. At nearly $300, the card comes at a premium cost when the price is compared to other GeForce DDR cards. The video in feature is where most would decide between this fine card and the less expensive alternatives.

Creative Labs supplies consumers with a basic GeForce DDR board that performs just as good as they come while also offering a few interesting utilities and drivers on their website. The biggest drawback is the lack of video in/out support. Bar that drawback, it's hard to ignore going with the Annihilator Pro for the killer price.

Beide kaarten zijn dus leuk, alleen is de Asus V6800 Deluxe leuk voor de mensen die video-in en tv-out willen en de Creative Labs Annihilator Pro is leuk voor de mensen die gewoon een goedkope kaart willen zonder extra franje.

Well Rounded Entertainment maakt ons blij met het bericht dat nVidia op dinsdag 25 april haar nieuwe 3D accelerator processor, de GeForce 2, zal aankondigen aan het publiek. Let the countdown begin :

nVidia's got a new card on the way. The graphics chip company has unveiled plans to roll out the newest member of its family of GPUs on April 25th. nVidia didn't reveal any of the details of the new chip, but it's widely assumed to be the next generation of its wildly popular GeForce 256. The company has an established pattern of unveiling a new chipset ever 12 months, with an update to the existing set usually coming six months after the initial release. The GeForce 256 was announced Aug. 31, 1999.

As over clocking is a common practice those days, we need more and more cooling power. It is a good idea to increase the airflow but sometimes it gets noisy. Especially in my system, running 24/7 on windows 2000, which was equipped with no less than 8 fans.

[...] Many are afraid of mixing water and expensive electrical components but if you do the testing first, it’s totally safe. If you manage to spill water on the motherboard or whatever while the computer is not running, make sure to dry it clean and it won’t affect it at all. This little experiment is a total success. It has cost half of what I wanted to spend and the results are better than I expected. I wasn’t sure if passive cooling of the water would be able to handle the heat the processor is pulling.

Gentus is de ABIT versie van Linux, en geënt op RedHat 6.1. ABIT is begonnen met Gentus, om de linuxende ABIT-er de mogelijkheid te geven van de geintegreerde controller gebruik te maken.

Gentus 2.0 is geënt op RH6.2

We are going to release Gentus Linux 2.0 for KA7 motherboard.
The difference between Redhat 6.2 and Gentus 2.0 is shown as the attached file.

1.The KA7 motherboards are going to be shipped with a free bonus CD title- Gentus 2.0 after 17th April.

2.The press release and gentus web site will release Gentus 2.0 at the same time.

3.There will be at least 6 mirror sites providing Gentus 2.0 download after 17th April.

4.Main features of Gentus 2.0:
*Fully supports WX6 and a special tool- "abitconf" lets users may setup X window and AC97 very easily.
*The KA7's ATA/66 mode is fully supported. Redhat 6.2 cannot enable ATA/66 mode of all VIA VT82C686A south bridge based motherboard. The following data show that Redhat 6.2 only has "3.08MB/sec" while Gentus 2.0 has a very high index "26.78MB/sec"
*Gentus 2.0 supports KA7, VT6X4, VA6, WX6, BE6-II, BP6
*Abit PerMon tool 2.0 has an over-clocking tool- "G-Point Explorer". It makes over clocking FSB very easy under X window, and the result is double checked by "mhz".

Naast een volledige ATA66 ondersteuning van de HPT366 en Inet 810 en 820 chipsets die al in Gentus 1.0 zaten, beschikt Gentus 2 dus ook over een volledige ondersteuning van de Via chipsets als de Apollo Pro en de KX133.

Zelf heb ik gestoeid met met mijn BP6, Linux en de ATA66 Controller, en dat heeft wel ellende gehad. Maar toch blijkt Suse 6.3 al een volledige ondersteuning te hebben voor de Highpoint controller. er zit alleen een bug in de installatie routine, waardoor je Lilo niet in de Boot record van een ATA66 schijf krijgt.

Gentus 1.0, is een rasechte RH6.1, in het opzicht dat het allemaal hinderlijke bugs heeft waar 6.1 ook zwaar aan moet geloven. Aangezien RH6.2 al een stuk beter is, zou Gentus het nog ver kunnen schoppen.
