Unless the OEM is nice enough to put an inventory sticker on the ram stick with 64, 32, 100, or 133 cryptically in there somewhere, you wouldn't have a clue what it was you were holding. The same goes for that sick of RAM that was hiding behind the couch - what speed is it?

How then do you decipher the codes printed on each chip? Well, step one is to go to the manufacturers website and hope they are web-savy enough to have put up decent documentation. I looked around trying to find documentation that would tell me what one stick of RAM I have is, but wasn't able to find any info on it.

Let us first ignore what we learned in the last section about the performance of the 5.13 drivers on a 32 MB GeForce card. The 64 MB GeForce seems to offer some advantages over 32 MB GeForce cards. In addition, by preventing AGP texture swapping, the 64 MB GeForce prevents those times in games where you wonder what your system is doing. WebWereld meldt dat Durk Jan de Bruin's Startpagina.nl voor een onbekend bedrag verkocht is aan de VNU, die voortaan de zakelijke kant van de website zal gaan verzorgen. Lees hier het complete bericht.

VNU belooft dat Startpagina.nl zijn huidige karakter zal behouden. "We zullen Startpagina.nl niet verminken. De formule doet het goed, die laten we voorlopig zo", zegt De Wit. "We kijken wel naar mogelijkheden om VNU-sites samen te voegen met Startpagina.nl." VNU exploiteert nu sites die veelal gebonden zijn aan tijdschriften als Intermediair en Libelle.

Met de honderden beheerders van de dochterpagina's is niet overlegd over de overname. Zij zijn donderdag aan het einde van de middag per e-mail op de hoogte gebracht. Enkele vrijwilligers hebben WebWereld laten weten geen bezwaar tegen de verkoop van Startpagina.nl te hebben.

Ook VNU ziet niet in waarom vrijwilligers tegen de overname zouden zijn. "De dochters zijn gebaat met veel bezoekers. Ze kunnen wat verdienen met hun banners. Wij gaan zorgen voor meer traffic", zegt De Wit.

The Register brengt het trieste nieuws dat Aureal, fabrikant van de welbekende Vortex 3D audio chips, zichzelf failliet heeft verklaard. Twee week geleden werd al het complete management team naar huis gestuurd:

Unless Aureal's board can get the company back on an even keel, there will be little choice left to it beyond liquidation and the sale of its small patent portfolio. Clearly there's little interest in acquiring Aureal as a going concern, since the company is believed to have been up for sale for the last few months at least and found no buyer.

Aureal's Q4 figures saw its losses expand to $9.5 million and sales shrink to $8.5 million, down from $10.8 million in the same period last year and $11.2 million in the previous quarter. The year-to-date loss for 1999 was $26.9 million, compared to a loss of $18.5 million for 1998.

This report claims that AMD will keep both Slot A and its up-and-coming Socket A packaging going until the end of this year. The same report suggests that AMD's up and coming Mustang chip will have on-die cache of as much as 2Mb. These chips will be aimed at the workstation and server markets. The Mustang is named after the motorcar rather than the aeroplane.

[...] As reported here before, Alpha Processing Inc (API) will produce chipsets for multiprocessing AMD microprocessors. AMD itself will only produce two-way SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) chipsets.

Netscape heeft per ongeluk een half miljoen webmail accountjes kwijt gemaakt. Het 'foutje' ontstond tijdens het mergen van de Netscape Netcenter, Compuserve en America Online userbase:

Door de overlap in gebruikersaccounts en door communicatie- en technische fouten zijn gegevens verloren gegaan.

Zo'n half miljoen webmail-gebruikers hebben hun email nog wel, maar moeten hun adres gedwongen wijzigen. Dat loopt door technische problemen bij Netscape ook grote vertragingen op.

Koen Crijns heeft een review in elkaar gezet rondom de MSI K7 Pro Slot-A plank, waarschijnlijk het beste mobo dat nog gebaseerd is op de oude AMD Irongate chipset. Momenteel zijn er echter al een aantal goede KX133 borden te koop in Nederland die je nu waarschijnlijk liever zal aanschaffen voor je Athlon. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

De vraag is echter of het nu zinnig is om een Athlon moederbord met AMD 750 chipset te kopen: inmiddels is de VIA KX133 chipset geïntroduceerd en moederborden met deze chipset zullen zeer binnenkort goed leverbaar worden. Door zaken als ondersteuning voor PC133 geheugen en AGP 4X zullen VIA KX133 moederborden net wat beter presteren dan de huidige AMD Athlon moederborden met AMD 750 chipset. Begin volgende maand zal ook MSI een moederbord met VIA KX133 chipset op de markt brengen, te weten de K7 Master.

Iedereen die nu op zoek is naar een goed AMD Athlon moederbord staat dus voor een dilemma: of een van de vele moederborden met AMD 750 chipset aanschaffen of toch nog even wachten op de nieuwe borden met KX133 chipset. Productcycli worden in de moederborden branche helaas steeds korter en voor de consument wordt de keuze er zo absoluut niet makkelijker op. Sharky Extreme heeft een review geproduceerd van de PC-10 Slot-1 Peltier cooler. Deze cooler is opgebouwd uit een Alpha P3125 heatsink, 2 60mm fans, een 70 watt Peltier element en een koperen cold plate .

For years now, heatsinks have been used to thermally protect delicate electronic components in stereos, computers, and even airplanes. As the heat builds up on a centralized location, it is transferred (usually with the assistance of thermal grease) to the heatsink, which has a greater surface area, facilitating better heat dissipation. Coupled with a fan, a heatsink can disperse even more effectively, keeping the temperature of your 28 million transistor CPU reasonably low.

The reason overclockers value a good heatsink is a simple matter of physics. By increasing the core frequency of a processor, more heat is generated; unfortunately, heat is the primary enemy of a semiconductor.

As more heat is introduced to the delicate circuitry of a CPU, the electronic signal traveling through it becomes weak, and the whole system locks up. In order to boost the strength of the signal, more voltage is supplied. Again, delta H (change in heat) is increased and the problem manifests itself even more rapidly.
Theoretically, a heatsink can only bring the processor down to room temperature, although this rarely happens. More commonly, the core is cooled 5-15 degrees F, depending on the size of the sink. Starved for a more effective method of cooling, the overclocking community has produced water coolers, vapor phase refrigeration (Kryotech's claim to fame), and the esteemed Peltier cooler. All three types have their pros and cons; however, using a Peltier cooler is the most economical choice for the overclocking enthusiast.

Sanders would not reveal the expected clock frequency of AMD's upcoming Athlon processor — code-named Thunderbird — with integrated Level 2 cache and copper interconnects, which it expects to ship by midyear. AMD began shipping its fastest 1-GHz Athlon processors, built with its 0.18-micron process technology and aluminum interconnects, to a limited number of customers last month.

The Thunderbird chip, which is will be produced at the company's Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany, is based on a 0.18-micron, six-layer metal copper manufacturing process. The process was frozen last winter and later qualified at the end of last quarter.

Wafer yields are high and stable for both Athlon processors and 4-Mbit SRAM chips based on the new process. Though AMD will not publically disclose the speed of the new Athlon until June, Sanders indicated in a presentation here that the company is seeing "excellent" speed results and has started shipping qualification chips to customers.[break]Er staat ook nog wat leuks over AMD's omzet:[/break]The sale of 1.2 million Athlon processors last quarter, combined with strong sales of flash memory, pushed AMD's first quarter sales up 10 percent to $1.06 billion, Sanders said.

Of NVidia dit leuk vindt betwijfel ik, ze vonden het ook niet goed dat Asus de GeForce V6600 DeLuxe op een standaard snelheid van 150/195 zou laten lopen.

insane schrijft dat ze bij GamePC een review hebben van de Celeron II 633 en 700 MHz. Beide CPU's konden de 1 GHz halen en dat was zonder het voltage omhoog te gooien of de CPU's in de koelkast te plaatsen .

We didn't expect much overclocking success from the new Celerons. Considering their ungodly high multipliers, it sounds like a tough chip to overclock. Although, the lower bus speeds do leave some breathing room to bump up, not to mention the lower voltage should allow for greater overclocking. We were very surprised with the results we got, I believe the picture on the right can explain most of it.

That's right folks, Celerons at 1 GHz (1000 MHz). More amazing, not only were we able to overclock the Celeron 700 to 1 GHz, but the Celeron 633 as well! The Celeron 633 at 1 GHz was even the more stable of the two, running full loops of 3DMark and Quake III for hours on end without problems. Also, get this, we were using default voltage. The Celeron 700 at 1 GHz crashed quite a bit, which is why we didn't run our benchmark suite on it. It's safe to say that the maximum "easy" overclock for the Celeron 700 is 950 MHz, still not bad at all. For the record, we used Thermaltake "Orb" Air-Coolers on the Celerons, and did our overclocking in Abit BE6-II's and Soyo SY-7VCA boards.
