Advanced Micro's stock gained 5-15/16 to 47-15/16 in heavy trading on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 3.4 million shares had traded hands following an opening delay caused by an order imbalance.The company said it had begun shipments of its 1 gigahertz (GHz) computer chip, beating its far larger competitor Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news).
Analysts have said that the chips will not be available in big volumes after they are launched, and that only a handful of personal computer makers are likely to announce products designed for one gigahertz processors.
Advanced Micro said it would immediately begin shipping its chips to its two lead partners, Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) and Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news)
