Op Wired.com valt te lezen dat je in Amerika bij Virgin Entertainment Group voor $50 per jaar een internetabonnement kunt krijgen. Je krijgt er dan een echte WebPad bij (zie plaatje hieronder). Het lijkt natuurlijk erg goedkoop, maar je moet er wel iets voor doen: Virgin vertellen wat je zoal doet op het Net. Er wordt een report bijgehouden met alle sites die je bezoekt, zodat Virgin het Internetgebruik in kaart kan brengen.

"We’ve been very honest and we’ve said, 'the more you give us, the more info, the more we will tailor to your needs,'" said Dave Alder, senior vice president of Virgin’s e-commerce group in Los Angeles.

"In return, we will not share email addresses, and will ensure that all communication comes through Virgin.... We’re interested to know how they use the service, how long they’re active, where they visit. From that, we’ll be able to tailor content, advertising, and partner sites accordingly," he explained.

Na 3 jaar abonnement is dit apparaat overigens je eigendom.

The Ghost schrijft: "Sonera gaat na alle blunders van de afgelopen dagen wederom de fout in. Na diverse toezeggingen dat uiterlijk vandaag alle gebruikers voorzien zouden zijn van een nieuw password, blijkt dat Sonera voor de zoveelste keer haar beloftes niet na komt. De nieuwe passwords zullen op z'n vroegst pas op 12 april bezorgd worden:":

Ook met een kloppend hart vol verwachting bij de brievenbus gezeten in de hoop spoedig de brief met het nieuwe wachtwoord te ontvangen? Helaas, de brief zal vandaag (11-04-2000) niet bezorgd worden. Wegens een FOUTJE van Sonera zijn de brieven gisteren niet de deur uitgegaan, maar pas vandaag!

Het gevolg is duidelijk: de klanten van Sonera kunnen op z'n vroegst pas weer op woensdag 12 april gebruik maken van de email- en homepageserver. Tenminste, ALS de brief morgen wel op de mat valt.

Michael Lek van Sonera meldde dit vandaag aan de MGG. "Het was absoluut de bedoeling de brieven vandaag te laten bezorgen, maar door een foutje zijn de brieven gisteren niet verstuurd."

Al deze ellende is het direkte gevolg van de megahack waarover wij maandag en zaterdag eerder schreven. Meer info over de situatie bij Sonera vind je op de website van de Multiweb Gebruikers Groep.

Overclockers UK beweert dat zij de eersten zijn met een review van de Abit KA7. De review werd gisteren gepost, maar bij de review date staat 3 april (?). Het systeem werd getest met een Athlon 750@900 (gesoldeerd, 1.75V, 1/3 L2 cache speed). Deze al behoorlijk opgevoerde athlon kwam nog een eindje verder met de Abit KA7: het bord werd succesvol op 109 / 145 MHz geklokt. Zo kwam deze Athlon terecht op 984 MHz. Helemaal niet slecht! Precieze (stabiele) resultaten:

Wij wachten natuurlijk nog even op de allesvernietigende review van Femme.

CNET bericht dat Microsoft de adviesgever van George W. Bush, presidentskandidaat, heeft gehuurd om Microsoft van strategische adviezen te voorzien. Volgens de New York Times heeft Microsoft dit gedaan om Bush aan hun kant te krijgen, mocht hij eventueel president worden. Microsoft spreekt dit bericht tegen, maar zegt tegelijk dat het klopt:

"It's one of several companies that we hired to defend ourselves from our competitors' lobbying attacks," Dan Leach, a Microsoft spokesman, said.

"We are not hoping or expecting that any different administration will pull back or withdraw this (antitrust) case," he added. "We believe and we fully expect that we will win this case on appeal."

Microsoft spokesman Mark Murray told the Times that the company hired Century Strategies to counter "a comprehensive lobbying campaign by our competitors" to promote the government's suit.

He said Microsoft has been trying to get its point to all presidential candidates, including vice president Al Gore. Dee van DeezTech brengt ons wederom een review van een moederbord met Via Apollo 133 chipset. Dit maal is de Abit VA6 aan de beurt. Overclocking features zijn ruim aanwezig, zoals op bijna elk Abit moederbord, maar het opvoeren bleek niet in alle gevallen perfect te verlopen:

For this review, we used two processors for our overclocking experiments with the VA6. We used an Intel Pentium III 550E and an Intel Pentium III 800E. We managed to overclock the 550E to a very respectful 825 MHz at 1.75 volts using the max bus speed of 150 MHz. We didn't have much luck with the Pentium III 800 as we were only able to bring it to a stable 840 MHz.

Webwereld schrijft dat uit onderzoek van IDC is gebleken dat Linux in het vierde kwartaal van 1999 het snelst groeiende besturingssysteem in de servermarkt was. In het low-end segment heeft Linux inmiddels een marktaandeel van 6% veroverd:

Linux blijft groeien, nu meer grote spelers deze markt betreden. Klanten kiezen ook in toenemende mate voor Linux omdat het een betrouwbaar, goed presterend en kostenefficiënt platform biedt, stelt IDC.

Linux vertegenwoordigt ongeveer zes procent van de totale markt voor 'instapservers', gemeten in geleverde machines. Ondanks dit lage percentage heeft IDC hoge verwachtingen van het besturingssysteem.

Planet Multimedia schrijft dat vandaag door Trouw als eerste het nieuws naar buiten werd gebracht dat de Zwitserse Sandoz Family Foundation, grootaandeelhouder van World Online, een vetorecht heeft bij belangrijke besluiten. Sandoz heeft via haar dochters Haselbeech Holdings NV, Mallowdale Corporation NV en Beguiat Corporation NV in totaal een belang van 50,71%. Het vetorecht van Sandoz wordt niet in de prospectus genoemd:

Benguiat is eigendom van Sandoz, Nina Brink en Reggeborgh. In principe komt Sandoz met dat belang in Benguiat in totaal niet verder dan ongeveer 47 procent. Maar binnen Benguiat moeten de besluiten unaniem worden genomen, dus ook over de verkoop van aandelen. Dit betekent dat Sandoz belangrijke besluiten kan tegenhouden.

[...] Deze eigendomsverhouding wordt verzwegen in het prospectus. Dat is wederom een interessant feit in een eventuele rechtszaak. Ook in het interview met Viktor Bischoff is duidelijk hoe deze president-commissaris van World Online en baas van Sandoz Family Foundation weigert om uit te leggen hoe het zit met Benguiat. In de Engelstalige weergave van het interview met Bischoff is aan het eind nog even een passage opgenomen waarbij een eventuele overname door een Amerikaanse partij aan de orde komt. Bischoff had ook daar kunnen (en moeten?) zeggen dat Sandoz zo'n overname kan tegenhouden.

Yahoo!Finance vertelt ons dat het nieuwe speeltje van Quantum3D, de AAlchemy 4116, vanaf vandaag te koop is. Wie een demonstratie wil mag even in Den Haag gaan kijken op de ITEC, waar de eerste demonstratie plaatsvindt. De AAlchemy 4116 ondersteunt hardware full-scene sub-pixel anti-aliasing en is gebouwd met maar liefst 4 voodoo3 chips. Het ding vreet dan ook 200W. Binnenkort komen er ook AAlchemies met 4 of 8 VSA-100 chips erop. Prijzen beginnen bij $7.999,-.

The Register schrijft dat ze de oplossing hebben van het Pentium III mysterie, waarom de Katmai op 500 mhz sneller is dan de coppermine op 700 mhz. Dat is heel verrassend *kuch* te danken aan de dubbele hoeveelheid cache op de katmai core. Je kan dus beter een Katmai op 500 Mhz kopen dan een Coppermine op 700 Mhz als je meedoet aan Seti@home (doet natuurlijk niemand, iedereen doet hier mee met de DPC):

When we revealed that a 700MHz Coppermine performed worse than a 500MHz Katmai when running SETI at home analysis (Story: Pentium III defies the laws of physics), we were at a loss initially to explain how this could be. HotHardware heeft een review klaarliggen van de MSI MS-6309, een socket 370 moederbord gebaseerd op de Via Apollo Pro 133A. Overclocken van dit bordje ging redelijk:

With all of the flexibility that the MS-6309's BIOS affords, we were anxious to see if we could get our P3-500E to new heights. We were able to overclock the CPU to a max of 143MHz. FSB for a total of 715MHz. This particular processor has been proven at 750MHz. (150X5) in a couple of other boards, so we were a little disappointed here. When the FSB was set higher than 143, the system wouldn't post. This was the case no matter what voltage setting we used. Again, with another BIOS release from MSI, this can be easily rectified as the settings are all there ready for use. [break]Wat vooral opviel was dat het bord erg snel was:[/break] The 715MHz. scores show the MS-6309 to be virtually on par with a BX board. Take a look at our Tyan Trinity 400 Update for a comparison between the MS-6309, the BE6 and the Tyan VIA board. The MS-6309 beats the Trinity 400 handily even when it was clocked to 750MHz.! Remember, the MS-6309 is running at 143 MHz. Front Side Bus for a total of 715MHz. here. Also, although this is not quite apples to apples, the MS-6309 @ 715MHz. is right on top of the BE6 when it is clocked to 667MHz. with a 133MHz. FSB. All things being equal, the BX chipset of old still has a slight lead but the gap has narrowed dramatically and I would find it hard to believe that there is a perceptible difference for the end user.

Active Hardware maakt ons vrolijk met een review van de Ati Rage Fury MAXX, een 64 MB videokaart waar twee Ati Rage 128 Pro chips op gemetseld zijn. De kaart ondersteund ook nog eens S3TC, een mijns insziens ondergewaardeerde technologie. In Quake3 en andere OpenGL-based games blijkt de Ati wat langzamer dan de GeForce, maar in D3D komt de kaart helemaal tot zijn recht.

Even if the Rage Fury MAXX is as expensive as the GeForce 256 DDR graphic card, the Rage Fury MAXX offers as much and even better performances, at least under D3D environments. Against all odds, ATI is betting on the fact that as time passes by, games will be using more heavier textures and will be relying more on DirectX 7 new functionalities as well as Direct 3D new features. As these new technologies, high graphic resolutions of 1024 X 768 and above, as well as 32-bit color mode, are requiring more graphic processing power from the graphic card and it is precisely where the Rage Fury MAXX is doing good.

Alsof we er nog niet genoeg gezien hebben, heeft ook GamePC nu een review gepost van de Intel Pentium III Coppermine 850E FC-PGA. Deze processor draait op een 100 MHz busspeed (8.5 multiplier dus). Overclocken was daarom ook geen heel erg groot succes:

As you can expect, there wasn't much overclocking success with the 850E, although we did manage to hit the magic 1 GHz for a few minutes. As most other FC-PGA chips can usually clock about 200 MHz higher than their stated speeds, we were a bit disappointed by the results of the 850E, but not all too surprised. The 850E was able to clock up to 935 MHz (8.5 x 110) without problems, but after that was hit and miss. The board would boot at 03 MHz (that's the BE6-II's way of saying 1003 MHz), but wasn't stable for long, and quickly crashed running Windows applications. All of you hardcore overclocking-types should be able to get this thing over 1 GHz easy, keeping it at stable levels might be another story though.

Bij 3DHardware kun je een review vinden van de Abit BE6-II, een moederbord gebaseerd op de al wat oudere, maar zeker niet slechte BX chipset. Onlangs bleek uit een test van iXBT dat de BX-borden toch nog als beste uit de bus kwamen.
De Abit BE6-II heeft zeker geen tekort aan overclocking features:

This bios allows you to tweak everything to perfection, every option that you can imagine is there. But by far, this is a bios crafted to precision for overclocking. Allowing 1mhz increments from 83mhz and up (up to 200mhz fsb) the Be6 2.0 is a true overclocker's dream. 145 doesn't work? Well no probs, set the fsb to 144 and hope for the best. The Bios also allows .05 V increments for people taking their CPU's just a bit higher than the default voltage would allow. Also present are the AGP and PCI multiplier settings (1/2-1/4 for PCI and 1/1 and 2/3 for AGP). AGP 1/2 multiplier isn't available due to the BX chipsets limitations, which is slightly a disappointment but not Abit's fault after all. Also available is the AGP 1X 2X setting, which allows you to run some AGP videocards that won't take the 89mhz+ AGP bus. This works quite nicely, but of course you will have the performance hit. The rest of the bios is very nicely layed out with everything in place. A very nice feature that is included is on screen explanations for the whole bios. Yep, you get a little screen to the right which tells you what everything does. This is a real advantage, since this way, you won't find yourself digging through the manual to find out what a certain setting does, you just look to the right.

This is because the decoding algorithms for AC-3 and DTS are so complex that it would take too long to decode and output to listening to keep up with what is happening onscreen. Consequently, this is the reason why Dolby Digital and DTS are mainly used for pre-rendered cinematic soundtracks.

Enter the world of Positional 3D Sound. As games became more sophisticated and gamers became more sophisticated of what games they were playing, developers had to come up with ways to deliver the effect of surround sound that would envelope the player and(!) be interactive at the same time.

Called an API or Application Programming Interface, this software layer allows games and or applications to have direct access to the PC's hardware. Since the most complex functions are done in hardware, complex algorithms can be used to manipulate the digital signals.

The few Positional 3D Sound APIs that exist include: DirectSound3D, A3D, Sensaura, and Q3D. If you know about these technologies, you may be wondering why EAX and I3DL2 are not included as "Positional 3D Sound APIs". We'll touch on the reason a little later.

The Register schrijft dat Hitachi in Japan 100.000 gratis Windows 98 PC's weggeeft. Zij hopen hiermee de e-commerce in Japan een boost te geven.

The Hitachi deal will operate through third-parties - e-commerce companies will be able to hand over PCs to punters, paying the manufacturer from their own hopefully increased sales. Hitachi's partners will operate membership schemes, so presumably the vendor is after all that juicy demographic and buying pattern data, too. All that's missing is a tie-in with an ISP.

Jaja, toen wij gisteren posten dat de MS IE 5 source misschien openbaar zou worden hadden wij niet verwacht dat dit een pijnlijke vergissing was. Het nieuws, dat gisteren verscheen in de Wall Street Journal, was nog niet klaar voor publicatie en had volgens het DoJ "nooit gepubliceerd mogen worden". Het kan nog steeds zo zijn dat dit echt een plan was van het DoJ. WSJ is immers niet de eerste de beste krant; zij zitten dicht op het nieuws van de overheid.

But now all is revealed - sort of; the WSJ published it by accident. Through gritted teeth a spokesman told the deadly rival New York Times: "The story was not ready for publication and should not have been posted."

It's almost inevitable that the story emanated from a source in or close to the government camp, so it still seems likely that the 'give away IE' option is at least under consideration, if not on the table. It seems far more likely that the story was pulled because the source had placed restrictions on the use of the information, but that these had been ignored in error. Or that a draft of a story in preparation had escaped early.

The best way to insure proper operation and to extract the best performance from your system you need to do the dreaded clean install of Windows! I know it sounds like alot of trouble but it will result in better, more reliable performance especially if you've done alot of driver swapping to find the best combination for your hardware. If you are still running Windows 95 I would strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 98se. Win 98 is a better, faster operating system which will identify your hardware more accurately and run more efficiently. Win 98 will also let you download the latest updates for free. At least upgrade your Internet Explorer to the latest version EVEN IF YOU DON'T USE Microsoft's browser! Windows uses Internet Explorer as the basis of navigation throughout windows. Any improvements to IE will result in better overall system performance.

Volgens het Web Standards Project negeert Internet Explorer 5.5 de door het World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) opgestelde internet standaarden. De problemen hebben te maken met een foute interpretatie van Cascading Style Sheets en DOM1 (Document Object Model) en treden alleen op in de Win32 versie van de browser:

Jeffrey Zeldman van het WSP is woedend over de arrogantie van Microsoft en noemt het gedrag van de softwaregigant 'bizar en schizofreen'. Bizar omdat Microsoft eerder heeft beloofd zich te houden aan de door het World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) omschreven standaarden. Schizofreen omdat de Mac-versie van Internet Explorer 5.5 wel volgens de officiële standaarden werkt. "Waarom verdienen Windows-gebruikers niet dezelfde standaarden als Mac-gebruikers?" zo vraagt Zeldman zich af.

[...] Het is niet de eerste keer dat het WSP kritiek heeft op Microsoft. Ook bij de introductie van IE 4 en IE 5 waren er vergelijkbare geluiden te horen. Microsoft kan overigens gemakkelijk een eigen koers varen, daar Internet Explorer inmiddels door verreweg de meeste internetgebruikers als browser wordt gebruikt.

Apple heeft aangekondigd dat Pinnacle Systems en Matrox professionele video-editing hardware voor de Mac uit zullen brengen. Het eerste Apple produkt van Matrox, de RTMac realtime video editing kaart, zal in de herfst op de markt komen:

Apple said it would partner with Pinnacle Systems, a provider of digital video editing tools, and graphics hardware specialist Matrox, on new products for the content authoring markets.

Pinnacle will work on supplying new technology for editing high-definition video. A Mac with PowerPC G4 processor and specialized chips from Pinnacle will cost around $30,000 and will compare to specialized editing workstations costing much more, Apple claimed.

Matrox, best known for its graphics display hardware, will provide hardware for editing digital video on the fly. The product will be available starting this fall.

Nu.nl schrijft dat World Online in de afgelopen weken na de beursintroductie vrijwel alle fouten heeft begaan die er op communicatiegebied zijn te maken. Het bedrijf is onrustig, afwachtend en gesloten. Het belangrijkste is om rust in de tent te brengen en dat kan alleen door openheid van zaken te geven, menen communicatiedeskundigen:

"Brink en de voorzitter van de raad van commissarissen moeten zo snel mogelijk een persconferentie beleggen en alles op tafel leggen", zegt directeur G. Hazekamp van pr-bureau Hollander van der Mey. Sharky Extreme heeft een megalange review van de nieuwe Celeron 'II' 600 online gemikt. De benchmarks laten weer hetzelfde beeld zien als eerdere reviews: de Celeron is geen snelheidswonder, maar overklokken doet-ie wel goed. De Celeron 600 van Sharky Extreme deed niet moeilijk over een kloksnelheid van 816MHz:

Booting for the first time at 90 MHz resulted in a totally blank screen and I promptly rebooted. After resetting to the default speed, I increased the core voltage to 1.65V. At the higher voltage, the PC booted up, but it would not progress into Win 98. Raising the Celeron 600's core voltage up to 1.70V alleviated this issue but I still found some anomalies during overclock testing. Taking the CPU to 1.75V solved all of the issues and I ran the processor at 816 MHz for hours without any problems cropping up. This drastic increase in both core voltage and speed did come at a cost, as the CPU temperature increased to approximately 43 degrees Celsius. This is still well within normal operating conditions, but care should be taken to acquire adequate cooling if you're going to attempt this.

Unfortunately this was as far as the Celeron 600 would go, and attempts at the 95 MHz FSB (856 MHz core) met with serious problems. It would easily boot at this speed and even go into Windows, but any attempt at long-term testing resulted in a hard lock. Further attempts at core voltage increases, even up to 1.85V, didn't solve the problems and the Celeron 600 continued to lock at the 856 MHz core speed. The Global Win CPM25603-32 is certainly a capable cooler, but to achieve these kinds of overclock speeds with this chip, I would definitely require a Peltier or other high-end unit.

European Union science ministers Monday called for cheap access to the Internet as part of an action plan for harnessing new technology to create employment.

Portuguese Science Minister Mariano Gago, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, said greater competition between phone companies in local markets was needed to make the cost of Internet access in Europe competitive with U.S. rates. "This means having a flat rate equal to or less than on the other side of the Atlantic," Gago told a news conference after opening a two-day meeting of EU science ministers. "So far, liberalization has focused on long-distance markets."

David Hope, de Aartsbisschop van New York, heeft in het blaadje van de Conservative Christian Fellowship uitgesproken dat internet een 'potentie van kwaad' heeft. Hope waarschuwt voor de destructieve krachten van computers en internet, die volgens hem kunnen resulteren in een 'zielloze maatschappij':

Verder maakt Hope zich grote zorgen over het gebrek aan menselijke interactie door de geneugten van internet. Er zou voor sommigen nauwelijks meer reden zijn om huis en haard te verlaten om met mensen in contact te komen. Gemakshalve vergeet de kerkelijk leider hierbij dat virtuele communicatie ook een vorm van menselijk contact is.

De educatieve voordelen van moderne communicatiemiddelen worden door Hope onderkend, maar het staren naar televisie- of computerschermen en het geklik op muizen en toetsen kan rampzalige gevolgen hebben. "Internet heeft het in zich om onszelf te vernietigen."

Goh, hoe verassend: Bitboys heeft bekend gemaakt dat de release van z'n XBA graphics chip ('Glaze3D' mag niet meer ivm een trademark conflict) heeft uitgesteld naar de eerste helft van 2001. Ik kan me herinneren dat onze Finse vrienden nu al 2 jaar lang bezig om een produkt op de markt te brengen en tot nu toe hebben we uitsluitend prachtige beloftes en uitgestelde release dates gezien. In een post op nVNews.net schrijft Shane Long, CEO van Bitboys Inc., dat zij de release vertraagd hebben om nieuwe features zoals Transforms & Lighting in te bouwen. Ook wordt er meteen overgegaan op een 0,17micron produktie procédé:

XBA does enable superior fill-rates, but we wish to ensure that our first product is an unqualified success in all areas of performance in the 3D pipeline.

Via Ace's Hardware kwam ik bij deze usenet post van Dean Kent. Volgens hem is het wegens technische problemen niet mogelijk dat er Socket A naar Slot A convertors voor de Thunderbird en Spitfire worden uitgebracht:

VIA told me yesterday that the KX133 and KZ133 can be used for either Socketed or Slotted boards because the electrical specifications are the same. However, they said they had done some tuning for each there might be 'issues' if used with the 'wrong' connector. When I discussed this with someone else, he indicated that AMD is having some problems with the Socketed chip (Thunderbird,in particular) because it draws so much power. Apparently, if the processor is not cooled very well, it will fry immediately upon getting power!!! I believe that this has something to do with the 'tuning' VIA was talking about, and why it requires a different chipset - and why an adapter is not feasible.

Sometimes physics prevents us from doing things we would like to do. Perhaps one of the more knowledgable EEs here could provide some information about whether this is a likely scenario or not...

Bij GA-Hardware hebben ze nog een review geproduceerd, namelijk eentje over de AMI Hyperdisk IDE RAID Controller:

What many of us may not think of is that the expertise that engineers how your CPU "talks" to your other components can be applied to other enhancements. One that is receiving a lot of interest lately is IDE RAID. Within the last month or so, a lot of sites have reported on (and copied others information) the ability to hack a Promise UDMA/66 controller into their RAID controller by a little bit of soldering and a BIOS update.

How many people are really interested in RAID? Well, probably more would be if they understood it better. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. The main points of RAID are allowing for higher performance, and better data safety. RAID achieves this by using multiple drives in variety of configurations. One thing I always had questioned was the "I" in RAID, as up until very recently all RAID systems were SCSI, and NOT inexpensive.

De Hyperdisk is een standaard RAID controller maar dan wel eentje gemaakt op mooi blauw PCB, toch belangrijk als je kast dag en nacht openstaat .

Bij GA-Hardware hebben ze een review geproduceerd van de 2CoolPC cooler, een cooler die door middel van buisjes de lucht precies moet krijgen waar het moet zijn: tussen de AGP en PCI kaarten en richting de CPU:

I had noticed pictures of the unit's on the web before I actually received them and to put it nicely I thought that the design was laughable. I didn't think that anything so simplistic or strange looking could be of any use in my case, because before I installed it I had 7 fans in there. When I opened the box my viewpoint changed somewhat. The unit is designed to blow air above the PCI/AGP slots in the direction of the CPU while at the same time blowing air directly between the cards in the case. Overall it is a very smart design and puts the air exactly where you need it. The units also came with small Velcro pads that can be connected to the bottom of your case and the bottom of the 2CoolPC to keep the unit secure while at the same time allowing you to easily remove it.

[...] The last thing I'll note about the performance is the actual fan that comes with the unit. There are two flavors of the 2CoolPC unit, the basic difference is the power of the fan. The 2CoolPC basic unit comes with a 42cfm fan and the 2CoolPC plus comes with a 50cfm fan. Although I think the actual CFM numbers are a little overblown (bad pun, I know, but they always are overblown) the performance of the fans is very good. They are also very very quiet.
