Bij K-Bench is een roundup gepost waarin zeer uitgebreid de performance van 5 verschillende 8x IDE CD-RW drives werd onderzocht, te weten de Plextor 8/4/32, HP 9100i, Acer CRW 8432A, LG CED-8080B en de Yamaha CRW8424E. De Editor's Choice ging ditmaal naar de Hewlett Packard HP 9100i:

A prospective buyer should pay the most attention to the writing/rewriting category and the supporting software category. Most users install an additional CD-ROM drive for CD-to-CD copy; therefore, the reading performance should be regarded as an additional feature for the stable recording.

Cendyne's forte is in the temperature category; however, it scored low points for the reading performance and designs and such.

Kasan features a large buffer size and low price; however, in the noise and vibration category, it somewhat faltered behind.

Yamaha was satisfactory in the price and writing performance categories; however, it has more vibration problem than other contestants.

LG drive was not supported by the Win On CD and the buffer is only 2MB. The price is also more expensive than other drives; therefore, in the price/performance ratio department, it is way behind of the other products.

The HP product scored high points in several categories evenly and didnt have any way-behind-the-others category and is selected as the best choice.

The new ASMs announced today feature a 200 MHz clock speed, DLL controlled output, and a 400 Megabit/second/pin data transfer rate. All versions use page mode operation. Random access speeds are very high, with the fastest random cycle time measured at 30 nanoseconds.

"Fujitsu expects that the FCRAM technology will make a significant design contribution to a wide range of applications," said Ryusuke Hoshikawa, chairman of FMI. "The FCRAM products introduced today provide high-speed random access capabilities by combining the FCRAM core with the high-speed data transfer rate provided by DDR. This version is ideal for graphic and imaging buffer memory implementations such as are required for digital TVs, set-top boxes and similar applications. Future versions will expand our base of applications."

Dit geheugen moet ideaal zijn voor de steeds snellere videokaarten, die steeds meer last krijgen van te sloom geheugen (GeForce). Volgens geruchten krijgen de opvolgers van de G400 van matrox, de G450 en G800 misschien wel dit geheugen.

TgF schrijft dat MP3.com nu ook (naast door tante RIAA) is aangeklaagd door artiesten uit bands als The Coasters, The Chambers Brothers en The Original Drifters (wie kent ze niet?). Er wordt getracht een class action zaak te starten om op die manier financiële vergoeding te kunnen innen.

De muzikanten, die actief zijn in bandjes met namen als The Coasters, The Chambers Brothers en The Original Drifters, vinden dat noch MP3.com noch platenmaatschappijen zomaar het recht hebben hun songs over internet te verspreiden.

De bands eisen volgens persbureau Bloomberg financiële vergoedingen voor het uitgeven van materiaal op het net. Het machtige Time Warner en Sony zijn twee van de platenmaatschappijen die zijn aangeklaagd.

De advocaten van de muzikanten willen er een zogeheten class action zaak van maken, waarbij een zaak wordt aangespannen uit hoofde van een grote groep gedupeerden. Bandjes die voor 1995 – toen een nieuwe copyrightwet werd aangenomen - een plaat hebben opgenomen, kunnen meedoen.

However, the photoresistance technology has not been able to satisfy requirements for high definition and etching resistance at the same time. Commercialization of 0.10-micron circuit devices has been made difficult by the Post Exposure Delay(PED) properties that alter the circuit patterns.

The new ArF photoresistance technology developed by Samsung Electronics simultaneously delivers outstanding definition and etching resistance as well as improved PED (Post Exposure Delay) properties. As a result, this substance will enable the rapid commercialization of next-generation technology.

Heraut komt: ons het nieuws brengen dat de Playstation2 toch geen geschikte hardware bevat om raketgeleidingssystemen te bouwen:

TOKIO - De Playstation2 is toch ongevaarlijk. Dit heeft het Japanse ministerie van Handel dinsdag besloten, nadata het eerder elektronicagigant Sony exportbeperkingen opgelegd had omdat gevreesd werd dat onderdelen van de geavanceerde spelcomputer voor militaire doeleinden zouden worden gebruikt.

HardwareCentral heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van iets wat we allemaal wel willen hebben: een Dual Intel Pentium III Xeon . Deze dual config blijkt in alle benchmarks beter te scoren dan een dual p3 en een quad Pentium Pro, en zo hoort het ook. De prijs van de processoren valt nog best wel mee; het zijn de andere onderdelen die het systeem duur maken:

InQuest heeft een erg interessant artikel gepost waarin zij de prestaties van DDR geheugen (op Micron Samurai DDR chipset) vergelijken met die van RDRAM (op Intel 840 chipset). De resultaten waren zeer interessant: in bijna elk geval was het DDR geheugen sneller dan het RDRAM geheugen (verder exact dezelfde configuratie gebruikt). Wat wel opviel was dat bij gebruik van CAD applicaties onder Windows NT het RDRAM net ietsje sneller bleek (verschil 0.8%). Bij de 'normale' applicaties bleek het DDR geheugen (soms veel) sneller.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, DDR exceeds the performance of dual channel RDRAM, at times by a very substantial margin. There are several cases where there is very little difference, and finally a few where the 840 pulls ahead by a small margin. Based on this rather broad mix of applications and benchmarks, Micron’s single channel (64-bit) DDR implementation must be declared the performances winner over Intel’s dual channel RDRAM platform. Even with these impressive results, the performance potential of DDR is still not entirely exhausted. We already know that at least one vendor (nVidia for X-Box) plans to produce a high-speed 128-bit implementation of DDR main memory for desktop computing. Perhaps others will implement dual channel DDR (or 128-bit DDR) solutions as well. We have every reason to expect further performance improvements from such solutions.

The hard drive is the slowest part in your computer (after the floppy drive and cd-rom). This is because it is mechanical and consequently, has moving components. This moving and rotating business takes time and it will never be as fast as the solid state electronics that move at the speed of an electron. Yet despite all this, it is the one device that stores all the information kept on the computer.

Where should I start? Nikon have taken one of the most capable, reliable and popular digital cameras of 1999 and brought it up to the next level. They've avoided simply upgrading the imager and have updated the camera inside and out, lots of new features, fixes to old niggles and improvements on what was already a great digital camera. Probably the best 3 megapixel digital camera under $1000 (time will tell, I'll be reviewing some more soon...).

Jsi Hardwre heeft een review gepost van de Ricoh MP9060A, een gecombineerde DVD en CDRW drive. Vooral erg handig als je geen ruimte meer hebt in je kast. Het apparaat kan op 6x schrijven, op 4x herschrijven en DVD's lezen met een snelheid van 4x. Daar komt bij dat het dingetje ook nog eens niet te duur is. Een overwegend positieve conclusie dus bij deze review:

The inclusion of a DVD drive in the CDR Drive certainly is very innovative. Although other companies have done the same thing so I cant be sure who first came up with this idea.

Overall I think this is a great drive, it saves you a drive bay it has all the features you could need and more. If you looking for a Cdrw and a DVD drive then i think you should consider this drive. For its price i think you will be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Eerder schreven wij dat het best zou kunnen dat VIA iets heel moois overhield aan de deal met S3: het zou kunnen doorgaan met support voor Intel Slot 1 technologie. VIA zou deze mogelijkheid binnenkort gaan verliezen. Bij The Register valt nu te lezen dat het niks geholpen heeft: De cross-licensing deals tussen S3 en Intel zitten niet in het deel dat VIA heeft gekocht:

The source said that the cross-licensing deals between S3 and Intel, which came about as a result of some wise buying of Exponential patents, were not part of the territory that Via has bought.

While that will offer some relief to Intel, it means that we are set for a long hard battle through multiple courts across the world, delighting m'learned friends but probably leaving the rest of us bitter and twisted.

De AMD Athlon prijzen gaan hard omlaag nu de release van de Thunderbird en Spitfire steeds dichterbij komt. Het is ook een antwoord op de aangekondigde prijsverlagingen van Intel. Dit meldt The Register. De prijzen komen nu in de buurt van die van de Intel Celeron (oppassen, Intel!). Zeer goed nieuws voor al die potentiële processorkopers onder ons dus. The pricing of AMD's 700MHz Athlon is particularly interesting, because the firm is positioning it against Intel Celeron microprocessors. These Intel processors are, effectively, cut-down versions of Coppermine chips.

Bij Extreme Hardware hebben de mensen een review in elkaar gezet van de Logitech Mouseman Cordless Wheel, het mooi gestylede draadloos geval van Logitech. Over de prestaties van het muisje hebben ze het volgende te zeggen:

The overall desktop performance of the Cordless Mouseman Wheel is almost indiscernible from the standard corded Mouseman Wheel. Logitech has done a great job transferring this award-winning design to the cordless environment and users will hardly notice the transition. Not having to deal with a mouse cord also confers several benefits, like increased freedom of movement and not having to wiggle the cord out from under a keyboard or monitor. Gaming performance is also very good and the increased freedom of movement will allow those with larger mousepads to really whip the Cordless Mouseman Wheel around. While performance is similar to a standard corded mouse, the absence of PS/2 report rate support may be an issue to some gamers.

Eric van Ballegoie heeft onlangs op DVD-Review.nl een review neer gemikt van de Yamakawa AVPhile 713 DVD speler met een ingebouwde Dolby Digital decoder en (heel erg handig) de mogelijkheid om MP3 muziek files af te spelen vanaf een CD-R of CD-RW. Hieronder wat info over de werking van de laatstgenoemde feature:

Aangezien de speler gebruik maakt van een (minimaal) tweede generatie DVD-ROM drive kan de Yamakawa ook CD-R en CD-RW discs zonder problemen lezen.
Dit, in combinatie met de MP3 afspeel mogelijkheden van het apparaat, biedt u de mogelijkheid MP3's op CD te branden om deze vervolgens met de Yamakawa af te spelen. Uiteraard namen wij de proef op de som en brandden we een slordige 650 Mb aan MP3's op een 80 minuten CD. Het resultaat wat een CD met 176 nummers. Wanneer de disc in de speler wordt gedaan bekijkt de Yamakawa de directory structuur, en begint vervolgens de eerste MP3 af te spelen. U kunt meerdere directories op een CD branden, de Yamakawa raakt er niet van in de war.

Op het beeldscherm wordt laten zien welke track er momenteel wordt afgespeeld, hoeveel tracks er op de disc staan, hoeveel directories, en tevens een lijst met tracks. Deze lijst bestaat uit meerdere pagina's, afhankelijk van hoeveel MP3's er op de disc staan.

De geluidskwaliteit waarmee de Yamakawa de MP3's afspeelt is zeer goed. Zowel via de SPDIF als de analoge uitgangen klinken de MP3's net zo goed als op een PC met SoundBlaster Live! geluidskaart. Prima dus.

Bij Sharky Extreme is een review online gekegeld van de Diamond Monster Sound MX400 gebaseerd op de Canyon 3DTM audio controller van ESS. Deze soundcard heeft verder een digitale S/PDIF interface, quad speaker support en biedt ondersteuning voor EAX 1.0, EAX 2.0 en A3D 1.0. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Judging by our experiences with the MX400, it appears as though the card is targeted at a slightly different market than competing offerings from Creative Labs and Aureal. Lacking the more advanced gaming realism of the SQ2500 and coming up short in sound quality to the Live! series, the MX400 seems most adept in the overall value it provides. With most of the competition taking place in the high-end performance gaming sector, there is definitely room for a value-oriented card offering excellent positional audio and a few extra features (coax-out and RioPC connectivity).

A few aspects of the card left us desiring a little something more, such as the options for internal connectivity. A stereo AUX output would be very useful, as well as an S/PDIF connection. In addition, sound quality from the MX400 was noticeably bright, a quality attributed to the Canyon3D processor.

Barend schrijft dat de lui van Thresh's Firingsquad een clock for clock vergelijking van de Celeron II en Coppermine gemaakt hebben. De CPU's bleken evensnel te zijn als de L2 cache uitgezet was en de Coppermine een stuk sneller als het aanstond, wat dus goed aantoond waar Intel heeft geknoeid met de Celeron II:

In the words of Method Man, "Cache rules everything around me, CREAM. Get the money. Dollar dollar bill, y'all." I'm pretty sure he meant cash, but cache works for us. The P3 Coppermine and the Celeron processors performed exactly the same with the L2 cache disabled. The P3 has a larger cache, with higher set associativity, and less latency. One, all, or a combination of all these factors have an impact on performance.

As we can see from the benchmarks, clock for clock, the new Celeron is slower than the Coppermine P3. We also see, however, that the overclocked Celeron processor isn't that much slower. The P3-850E sells for about $900. A Celeron 566 sells for between $150-180 right now, but it should settle in the $150 range once demand dies down.

Just to be fair, lets compare the 566 to the P3-650E, a processor that we've been able to overclock to about 850MHz. You can find the P3-650E for around $300, about double the price of the Celeron 566. You'll also need a good stick of PC133 SDRAM if you want to overclock the P3, not to mention peripherals that are able to function with an overclocked system bus.

Het leuke is dat dit ook gaat gelden voor de Thunderbird versus de Athlon maar dan net omgekeerd .

WebWereld schrijft dat de webmasters van de Startpagina dochters geen geld krijgen naast de FL 1000,- die ze al hebben gekregen. VNU vindt dat ze het geld niet verdienen, ze hebben betaald voor het concept en de uitwerking daarvan:

"Voor de beheerders van dochterpagina's is er niets veranderd, terwijl voor de beheerders van Startpagina.nl de inkomstenbron is weggevallen", schrijft het Startpagina-team onder aanvoering van oprichter Durk Jan de Bruin in een e-mail aan alle beheerders van dochterpagina's.

Ook bij uitgever VNU, sinds twee weken eigenaar van Startpagina.nl, vindt de claim geen gehoor. Pim de Wit, directeur-voorzitter van VNU Tijdschriften, vindt niet dat de webmasters het geld verdienen. "Durk Jan de Bruin heeft het concept bedacht en uitgewerkt. Dat bepaalt de waarde van Startpagina."

"Wij zijn geenszins van plan de beheerders van dochterpagina's te piepelen", zegt De Wit. "In principe willen we doorgaan met iedereen. We gaan het wel meer stroomlijnen en we hebben behoefte aan een helderdere relatie met de webmasters."

GamePC komt ons verblijden met een review van de Asus V6800/64 MB GeForce DDR, een leuk (maar duur) kaartje met niks uitzonderlijks alleen wat extra geheugen:

Bij HardOCP hebben ze een Voodoo5 5500 AGP liggen, ze hebben jammer genoeg niks gebenchmarkt maar ze hebben wel tijd gevonden om ons te verblijden met een paar foto's :

Seriously, we just picked up an Alpha Silicon(e) (we put the "e" on there from an old throwback joke that Ars has been busting us on. i made the mistake one day of spelling "silicon" with and "e" on the end. all in good fun) of the Voodoo 5 5500 AGP. Just to prove we ain't faking it, we took some pics. All of these pictures are clickable for a 640x480 image.

Zoals je op het plaatje kan zien lopen er drie snoertjes naar de fannetjes, wat waarschijnlijk betekend dat er een programma (a la smartdocter van de Asus GeForce Deluxe kaarten) bij de kaarten geleverd gaat worden waar je kan zien hoe snel ze draaien en misschien ook wel hoe warm de chippies zijn :

Paul Gentle (moose) van Distributed.net schrijft in z'n .plan dat D.net vanaf 20 april met een beta test van de nieuwe OGR en RC5 clients begint. Naast een groot aantal bugfixes zijn de nieuwe clients voorzien van de - volgens geruchten bruut snelle - Athlon RC5 core:

Ok what everyone has been waiting for. We are about to start our beta of new clients for OGR and RC5. It looks like we have most of the bugs out, but want to make sure. We will be looking for your help to find any remaining bugs. You are probably asking how can I help. Well If you feel up to it and want to help the following will be happening.

On Thursday April 20th 2000 sometime UTC we will be opening our beta network and clients to those who wish to help us test. Information on how to help out with the beta process will be posted on a page that will be announced on Thursday and can be access from http://www.distributed.net/.

We will be making "beta" clients available with instructions for how to test the client and functionality. These clients will use a time out period so you will should not install then on machines that you will not be visiting frequently. Also it is possible that this client version will be ignored by our current network at sometime. Please only use it on the beta network.

We have a large number of bug fixes and changes included in this version so we need you to keep a sharp eye out to see that everything works in your environment.

[Update door Gregoor] Dit is wat Moose himself mij verder kon vertellen over de snelheidstoename voor de Athlon met de nieuwe specifieke K7 core: "I'm not sure about exact numbers for the speed improvements with the Athlon core (I don't have one myself). But I have been told expect 10-15% faster."

Videochip fabrikant Trident heeft laten weten dat het vastberaden is om verloren marktaandeel in de desktop markt terug te winnen. De tweakers van de oude garde herinneren zich vast nog wel de oude 512K VGA kaartjes uit de oude DOS tijd. Destijds stond Trident al synoniem voor ultieme bagger en sindsdien is het niet veel beter geworden. Trident wil nu een desktop versie ontwikkelen van zijn CyberBlade XP video decellerator voor mobile computers:

Trident, Santa Clara, Calif., will attempt to regain share in the desktop-PC graphics market while developing its presence in the notebook segment with its CyberBlade XP, based on the company's next-generation core.

[...] The twin 64-bit engines of the CyberBlade XP core maintain pin compatibility with the company's earlier CyberBlade e4, which embedded 4 Mbytes of memory into an older graphics core. But the CyberBlade XP is delivered as a multichip module, pairing the core with either 8 or 16 Mbytes of DRAM, while offering a separate option to address up to 32 Mbytes of discrete external DRAM. Planet GeForce heeft een registry key gepost waarmee full-scene anti-aliasing aangekacheld kan worden onder Direct3D in Windows 2000. De GeForce is eigenlijk niet snel genoeg om FSAA op een redelijk acceptabele resolutie te draaien, maar het blijft leuk om ff uit te proberen:

Ok, just merge this file to your registry and you'll have D3D FSAA in your games. If you want to modify the quality of FSAA just edit the reg file and find this line:

Now, 07 is the maximum quality. If you want less put the suitable number instead of 07 (legal values are 01-07) save the file and merge.

Jonathan Joseph heeft op de site van JC een artikel gepost met een analyse van de leverbaarheid van AMD en Intel processors. Volgens zijn informatie is er door dalende prijzen - in afwachting van de Intel prijsverlaging volgende week - momenteel een toenemende vraag naar Pentium III processors. Inmiddels zijn er al diverse rapporten die een nieuwe periode van PIII leveringsproblemen voorspellen. Afgelopen vrijdag schreef The Register hier ook al over:

Last week's checks of the processor landscape found strengthening demand for Pentium-IIIs as prices held fairly steady considering a scheduled " price move" is in a week. We believe these cuts on April 24th, to both the P-III and Celeron lines, should average around 15-20%, in-line with historical averages. Last week, the average delta to list price for processors fell from a 3% premium to parity, though most of the drop was in the higher speed grades. In fact, the most popular processors, the P-III 550 and 600, actually appreciated 3% on average last week.

[...] On the supply front, many brokers are once again complaining of a shortage of Intel P-IIIs. In recent weeks, supply had improved, as it began to about a month ago at the OEMs. Some attributed the return of tightness to strong demand, while others pinned the blame on continued manufacturing issues at Intel. More than one source anticipated another shortage of P-III processors lasting into the summer months. OEMs, however, still seem to be getting adequate supply. We believe the shortage is demand, rather than supply, induced. ZDNet schrijft in een artikeltje over toekomstige processors van AMD en Intel dat de officiële naam van de AMD Thunderbird mogelijk eind april tijdens de Windows Hardware Engineering Conference bekend wordt gemaakt. De verwachting is dat AMD de merknaam 'Athlon' zal handhaven, met waarschijnlijk een toevoeging zoals 'Athlon Professional' of 'Athlon Performance':

The company [AMD] hopes Thunderbird, Spitfire and Mustang will change all that. But AMD may very well decide to continue to leverage the Athlon brand, in much the same way Intel has done with successive revamps of the Pentium. Industry observers speculated that Thunderbird, for example, could have a name such as Athlon Performance.

[...] Thunderbird is expected to be demonstrated at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) at the end of April; its brand name will likely be announced by then. [break] Verder in het artikel wordt er nog wat oud nieuws over de Intel Timna en 64-bit Itanium processor gerecycled. Van de super low-end Timna CPU wordt verwacht dat deze een compleet nieuwe markt voor goedkope internet- en typedozen op gaat leggen. Dit segment zou goed kunnen zijn voor 60 tot 80% van de totale desktop markt: [/break] The low-cost processor, which integrates the CPU (central processing unit), memory and graphics controller onto a single "system on a chip", could open the door to ultra-cheap Windows-based systems -- a step beyond the sub-£600 PCs on the market today. Some experts have estimated Timna-based systems could capture an astonishing 60 to 80 percent of the total desktop market, according to analyst Sami Pohjolainen of Dataquest.

"Timna is an attempt at creating a new kind of category in the PC industry," Pohjolainen said. Hoewel de Thunderbird nog niet gereleased is vond AthlonOC.com het al nodig om een artikeltje in mekaar te draaien over het overklokken van deze processor. Zij baseren zich hierbij op de foto's van HardOCP, waarop o.a. de weerstanden zijn te zien die de multiplier en voltage settings bepalen:

My theory is that the resistor positions for multipliers 7.5x - 10.5x and the voltage have not changed. Then AMD went back down to 6.0x for 1.1GHz, 6.5x for 1.15GHz, and 7.0x for 1.2GHz. This is really guessing right here, but its possible the 500 and 550 position would be for the 1.25GHz and 1.3GHz settings. If this is true, which some of it is, that means that all current Gold Finger devices should be 100% compatible with the Thunderbird. The only thing GFD manufacturers would need to do is make a new settings chart for the Thunderbird.

Also going back and looking at Tom's 1.1GHz Thunderbird pic, the voltage looks to be the same as the 750MHz model. That means it is running at 1.7v as well IF the voltage settings are the same on the Thunderbird and Athlon. The final production Thunderbirds are supposed to run at 1.6v core voltage for default.

PCInsight.com heeft een review gepost van de Iwill SIDE RAID66 met HighPoint HPT370 controller. Evenals de FastTrak van Promise beheerst deze IDE RAID controller de RAID levels 0 (striping) en 1 (mirroring). Volgens de reviewer heeft striping met twee IDE schijven een merkbaar snelheidsverschil tot gevolg:

Using the SIDE-RAID66 card under normal every day use, I noticed that even the mundane of tasks became a bit more responsive. Loading large applications such as Adobe Premiere seemed to execute much faster than under RAID 0 than my regular single drive setup. At an MSRP of $99, you surely get your money's worth. Even if you are looking for just an ATA/66 controller card for your BX platform, this wouldn't be a bad option at all. With data redundancy and high speed RAID 0 and RAID 0/1 support the SIDE-RAID66 certainly delivers what it had promised. Now that RAID is available for IDE drives at a cost-effective price, I certainly foresee the demand for such cards growing at a very high rate.
