CNET.com laat weten dat er tóch (Novell) netwerktechnologie komt te zitten in MS Windows Me (Millennium Edition), de opvolger van Windows 98. Eerder wou Microsoft geen Novell Netware support in deze versie geven om meer consumenten te dwingen het duurdere Windows 2000 te kopen. Na golven van kritiek zijn onze monopolisten tot inkeer gekomen.

"Based on feedback from partners and customers, we'll put it back in," said Shawn Sanford, a product manager at Microsoft. The third beta version of Windows Me, released to testers last week, included support for Novell Netware, he said.

The controversy emerges from a conflict between Microsoft's stated plans and customer demand. Windows Me is the first operating system from Microsoft solely dedicated to the home PC user. Networking software from Banyan and Novell--which allows owners to connect PCs to servers, printers and other office computers in corporate networks--is made primarily for businesses.

Gamers Depot heeft een vergelijking klaarstaan van twee digitale (foto-)camera's die allebei plaatjes van 2.5 miljoen pixeltjes kunnen schieten. Het gaat hier om de Kodak DC-290 en de Olympus c2500L. Een duidelijke review met foto's erbij (altijd leuk). De conclusie is dat de Olympus het wint qua fotokwaliteit, maar de Kodak op het gebied van de gebruikersvriendelijkheid:

Though I didn’t fully get past my original angst over the design and controls of the Olympus 2500, it’s use of a TTL viewfinder is hopefully a sign of things to come in digital cameras. Unfortunately it is hampered with an inadequate serial interface, which is unacceptable for a camera at this price, either include the USB interface or bundle a USB reader. However, I come back to the uncompressed image quality this camera can produce and I start to feel better. As for the Kodak DC290 its image-quality for me is sub-par in a $1000 camera. Anyone who has never seen a 2 Megapixel digital camera image will be no less than blown-away by its vivid colors, however the mottling it produces in the standard compression mode and the exaggerated color saturation is disturbing to the professional eye.

Which Camera would I buy? Hands down I’d select the Olympus Camedia 2500, I didn’t realize how much I missed through-the-lens composing until I used this camera. If I had to recommend one of these to my mother, I’d recommend the Kodak, it’s more user friendly and makes cute noises (gag).

VIA Technologies heeft aangekondigd dat zij dit jaar een verdriedubbeling van de omzet verwachten. Tevens verwachten zij met de low-end Cyrix III processor een marktaandeel van 10% te bereiken. Dat is toch een tamelijk brutale uitspraak als je in aanschouwing neemt dat AMD met de succesvolle Athlon proc momenteel op een marktaandeel van slechts ~18% zit:

Taiwanese chip vendor Via bullishly announced today that its revenues should exceed $1 billion this year, leaving the company with ten per cent of the global microprocessor market in the process.

Last year Via notched up sales worth $380 million, which means it's predicting a growth rate of over 215 per cent. Key to making that happen is flogging plenty of Cyrix processors - Via reckons it will make around $455 million selling 13 million CPUs, ten per cent of the 130 million PCs expected to be built this year.

De webmasters van de Startpagina dochters claimen bij VNU een kwart van de 30 miljoen gulden waarvoor Startpagina.nl door oprichter Durk Jan de Bruin aan VNU is verkocht. De beheerders zijn niet tevreden met de 'fooi' van 1000 gulden die zij op dit moment uit de VNU deal opstrijken:

Van Dam wil als vertegenwoordiger van 'Verontruste Dochters' met VNU in gesprek treden over de overname. Volgens hem hebben beheerders van dochterpagina's recht op een geldbedrag naar rato van het aantal bezoekers van hun dochterpagina. "Per gemiddelde dagelijkse bezoeker is de waarde 11,50 gulden", heeft Van Dam berekend.

De webmaster van mp3.pagina.nl, met gemiddeld 15.000 bezoekers een van de populairste dochters, zou dan recht hebben op 172.500 gulden.

Bij Thresh's Firingsquad hebben ze alle chipsets eens bekeken en daar een leuk artikeltje over geschreven. Ze vinden alle chipsets wel redelijk goed (de KX133 de beste) alleen de 820 is volgens hun een echt waardeloze chipset, een mening waar weinig mensen iets tegenin kunnen brengen:

Speedy 3D heeft een comparison online gezet van de Alpha P3125 en Globalwin VOS32, twee hoogwaardige CPU coolers. De Alpha cooler bleek net iets beter te zijn dan de Globalwin cooler maar de Globalwin is een stuk goedkoper wat hem de titel 'beste keus' opleverd als je niet teveel wilt uitgeven:

The P3-125 has a copper plate that makes contact with the CPU; the rest of the heatsink is made of aluminum. Alpha uses this method of attack on all of their heatsinks today. The VOS32 is entirely made out of aluminum, and both units have some ventsinks to cool the cache chips down. De beursgang van de Duitse internet provider T-Online, onderdeel van Deutsche Telekom, is vandaag aanmerkelijk succesvoller verlopen als die van World Online een maand geleden. Rekening houdend met het dramatische verloop van de World Online aandelenkoers en het slechte beursklimaat in de VS was de introductieprijs van 27 Euro bewust laag gekozen. In de loop van de dag maakte het aandeel een winst van 5 Euro:

Op de eerste beursdag van T-Online gaat de internetaanbieder tegen de trend van dalende koersen in. Tegen het middaguur kon het aandeel een winst van bijna vijf euro noteren.

They also are promising a board with a TV outset. The 64 megabyte board will first hit the OEM dealers and the box version will be out in the stores by the end of August. The processor will have to be under 200 MHz, the memory – 166 MHz (DDR memory).

BiTMICRO heeft vandaag de E-Disk SFL35 solid state harddisk met 18,9GB flash storage aangekondigd. De SFL35 heeft een Wide SCSI interface en trekt een continue throughput van 18Meg per sec:

Volgens een artikel van China Times heeft AMD bij VIA voor het tweede kwartaal een bestelling voor 3 tot 3,5 miljoen EV6 chipsets geplaatst. Dit is opmerkelijk nieuws aangezien AMD eerder bekend maakte dat het verwacht 1,8 miljoen Athlon processors in het tweede kwartaal te verkopen. Het is niet ondenkbaar dat AMD deze verwachting naar boven heeft bijgesteld:

Gisteren schreven we nog dat Microsoft, in een poging om de populariteit van Windows CE weer wat omhoog te halen, wireless internet introduceerde op de WinCE handhelds. Webwereld meldt vandaag dat Microsoft hiermee waarschijnlijk net iets te laat komt, nu blijkt dat de nieuwe Palm V ook ingebouwde internet- functionaliteit krijgt :

Momenteel is de enige Palm met ingebouwde internetfunctionaliteit de Palm VII. Nog dit jaar komen ook de Palm V en de Palm III met draadloze netwerkmogelijkheden.

Het is nog onzeker of de nieuwe versies ook Bluetooth-chips bevatten. Palm werkt aan een eenduidiger strategie, waarin de producten meer richting connectivity gaan. "De draadloze technologie moet in al onze handhelds terug te vinden zijn", zegt Michael Mace, vice-president productstrategie bij Palm.

Marius wijst ons op een zeer interessant artikel van WebWereld waar wordt gemeld dat Startpagina.nl in de verre verste geen commercieel onafhankelijke site is. Na onderzoek blijkt een link op Startpagina.nl gewoon een advertentie te zijn waarvoor bedrijven als Bol.com en Buyitdirect.nl maandelijks een paar duizend gulden voor moeten neertellen. Wil je worden gekenmerkt als aanbevolen site zul je nog extra knaken moeten ophoesten waarna het bekende woordje 'tip' achter je naam wordt geplaatst.

De exploitanten van Startpagina.nl gaan prat op het ideële karakter van hun site. Het wordt de beheerders van dochterpagina's op een interne pagina met richtlijnen - de kwaliteitsdesk - expliciet verboden tekstlinkjes te verkopen. Ook het laten betalen voor het woordje 'tip' of een hogere positie op de pagina is niet toegestaan. In interviews (Haarlems Dagblad, Volkskrant, NRC, Bibliotheekblad) zegt Startpagina-oprichter Durk Jan de Bruin steevast geen winst te willen maken en dat Startpagina.nl alleen verwijst naar sites waar websurfers interesse in hebben. Die interesse zou blijken uit een speciaal meetsysteem. Het woordje 'tip' zou er alleen staan als dat verdiend is.

"Het is één grote leugen", zegt directeur Silvio de Groot van zoeksite Lycos. Toen De Groot vroeg waarom Lycos ontbreekt op Startpagina.nl kreeg hij te horen dat er maandelijks 1000 gulden moest worden betaald. "Ik was verrast. Ze roepen overal dat ze onafhankelijk en niet commercieel zijn. Dat vind ik hypocriet, daar doe ik niet aan mee."

Lycos staat nog steeds niet op Startpagina.nl. Als zoekmachine verschijnt standaard AltaVista.com. Niet zonder reden, want Startpagina is lid van het AltaVista-affiliate programma. "Als na een zoekopdracht de AltaVista-site wordt geopend zijn ze affiliate", bevestigt een woordvoerder van AltaVista. Hardware Guru Tom Pabst brengt ons een comparison tussen de Epox EP-7KXA en de Asus K7V KX133 mobo. De keuze was dit keer snel gemaakt; Tommie was niet onder de indruk van het Epox model en gaf duidelijk de voorkeur aan de Asus K7V vanwege zijn performance en stabiliteit:

The benchmark results show it once more, motherboards with VIA's Apollo KX133 chipset should definitely be preferred over motherboards with AMD's old 750 chipset. It is certainly true however, that there's no urgent need for an upgrade from an AMD750 to a KX133 motherboard right now, as long as you are happy with the performance of your current system. The improvements of KX133 lie mainly in the area of software that can take advantage of AGP4x. The higher memory bandwidth provided by KX133's PC133 support can only show a little in 3D-applications. People who are buying a new Athlon system however, should only go for KX133. There is simply not even one single reason to buy an AMD750 based board anymore.

As for the few two contenders in this test, it's pretty obvious that my recommendation goes towards the Asus K7V. It provided excellent stability combined with very good performance. So far it's the fastest Athlon-platform that I have tested. Our upcoming large KX133 motherboard test will show if Asus can pull off another overall win. So far it proved to be a very promising candidate for winning the 'Best Athlon Motherboard' contest.

Anand heeft een artikel online gezet over het overklokken van de nieuwe FC-PGA Celerons uitgerust met de Coppermine128 core. Door middel van een standaard BX moederbord @ 112MHz FSB liep een Celeron 566 volledig stabiel op 952MHz op 1.75v met behulp van de standaard Intel koeler.

The new FC-PGA Celerons aren't as high performing as we'd like them to be, but when overclocked they can give you quite a bit of bang for your buck.

If you happen to have a BX motherboard lying around that can support the new Coppermine based Pentium III or has official support for the Coppermine128 Celeron, then picking up a 566 and pushing it to at least 850MHz wouldn't be a bad idea. If you already have a 133MHz FSB motherboard such as one based on the VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset then you may be better off going with a FC-PGA Pentium III 550E or 600E and overclocking that to 733/800MHz. At 733MHz you'd have a slightly faster setup than the Celeron at 850MHz, depending on the price difference between the CPUs the Celeron may still be the more attractive option even in this case.

The best case scenario for the Celeron 566 seems to be running it at 952MHz on a BX motherboard. Since you only need to have the 112MHz FSB frequency at your disposal (something almost all BX motherboards support) in order to accomplish this, it shouldn't be too difficult as long as your chip can physically run at that frequency. At 952MHz the Celeron becomes a very powerful contender, and for a CPU that costs under $200 you'd have one very cost effective setup that outperforms most of what's currently out there.

De Celeron 600 bleek helaas niet in staat te zijn om 900MHz (100MHz x 9.0) te trekken. Het maximale wat uit deze CPU te behalen viel was een tegenvallende 750MHz.

Of course, going with an OEM isn't an easy decision either. OEM systems tend to be more expensive than custom systems. Many of OEM boxes feature all sorts of little gadgets that you can't opt out on, and they also come with substantial software bundles that are only good for a brief microwave fireworks display (MS Works, anyone?). If you don't want the extras, tough luck. You're going to pay for it anyway.

De computer die ze leveren is zeker mooi maar te duur, een tweaker kan zelf wel een systeem bouwen en zeker als je dat $500 bespaart. Verder is het een computer waar Dell en Compaq nog wat van kunnen leren .

Volgens de prijslijst van de Noorse distributeur Multicom.no is de 550MHz Spitfire vanaf 24 april leverbaar. De 600MHz versie komt op 2 mei, gevolgd door het 650 en 700MHz modelletje op 8 mei. In een prijs update van AMD werden vorige maand al prijzen opgegeven voor de 24ste april. Een release volgende week lijkt dus waarschijnlijk.

3DChipset.com meldt dat de officiële naam van de nVidia NV15 mogelijk 'GeForce II GTS' gaat worden. Het domein GeForce2GTS.com verwijst naar de nVidia site. Een whois op dit domein geeft geen uitsluitsel op de vraag of het domein door nVidia geregd is, maar volgens 3DChipset is de naam GeForce II GTS al wel opgedoken in readme's bij uitgelekte Detonator drivers. Het zal mij niet verbazen als de 'GeForce II GTS' een hoge geklokte Ultra versie van de normale GeForce II is:
