Welliswaar niet een computer nieuwtje, maar daar de functionaliteit van Tweakers.net en Kranten.com in een aantal opzichten best overeen komen opzich een belangwekkend verhaal.

In dit artikel vertelden we je al over PCM, dat kranten.com met een kortgeding dreigt omdat zij vinden dat het linken van "headlines" diefstal en schending van auteurs rechten is. Kranten.com geeft daarop het volgende persbericht als antwoord:

"Linken van Internetwebsites in strijd met auteursrecht?"
PCM neemt juridische actie tegen online krantenoverzicht

ROTTERDAM, 18 april 2000 - Kranten.com, de website met het meest complete overzicht van de Nederlandse kranten, ligt onder vuur. PCM, uitgever van o.a. de dagbladen NRC, AD en De Volkskrant, wil Kranten.com verbieden te linken naar de websites van haar dagbladen en naar de koppen van de artikelen die online zijn gepubliceerd.

De uitgever van Kranten.com, Eureka Internetdiensten, pleegt volgens PCM inbreuk op haar merkrechten, auteursrechten en databankrechten "ten aanzien van de titels van de PCM dagbladen en de (titels en titellijsten van) artikelen uit de bedoelde dagbladen". Volgens de advokaat van PCM profiteert Kranten.com bovendien "op ongerecht-vaardigde wijze van de inspanningen van de dagbladen". Als Kranten.com haar service niet beëindigt, stapt PCM naar de rechter.

Kranten.com is een website opgezet door studenten ongeveer anderhalf jaar geleden. Het biedt een compleet overzicht van de koppen van door de gebruiker zelf geselecteerde kranten, variërend van landelijke dagbladen tot regionale kranten. Ook bestaat de mogelijkheid om dagelijks via een gratis e-mailservice een overzicht te krijgen van de koppen van de kranten. Een groot deel van de Nederlandse dagbladen wordt uitgegeven door het PCM-concern, Kranten.com kan geen overzicht meer maken wanneer deze bladen ontbreken.

De argumentatie van PCM dat Kranten.com de auteursrechten schendt wordt door Kranten.com verworpen. Volgens Kranten.com is het enige wat zij doet het linken naar de websites van de kranten. Martin Klerx van Kranten.com: "Internet is groot geworden door het linken naar andere websites oftewel het optimaal verspreiden en toegankelijk maken van de openbaar aangeboden informatie. PCM begrijpt niet wat de essentie van Internet is. Wanneer de rechter het met PCM eens is, betekent dit dat de vrijheid van meningsuiting en informatievergaring op Internet drastisch aan banden wordt gelegd. Linken is een gedeelte van Internet, het IS Internet. Eigenlijk zouden de kranten juist blij moeten zijn met de extra bezoekers die wij naar hen toe sturen."

Krijgt PCM gelijk van de rechter dan heeft dat grote gevolgen niet alleen voor Kranten.com maar ook voor websites als Ilse.nl, AltaVista.nl en beursgenoteerde bedrijven als WorldOnline. In Amerika hebben bij vergelijkbare cases de dot coms gelijk gekregen en werd het argument dat linken een inbreuk is op het auteursrecht verworpen.

Bij Gamers Depot hebben ze de nieuwe Hewlett Packard 9310i 10x IDE ReWriter eens getest. De drive bleek erg goed te werken en is ook al compatible met CloneCD . Lees hier alle info.

During our testing with the included Adaptec software, we were able to successfully burn onto a variety of media brands and types. In fact, we have yet to make a "coaster", which can largely be attributed to the handy 4MB of Cache that HP included. We also tested the drive with the popular "offsite backup" program called CloneCD. This program is known for its ability to burn just about anything you throw at it, however, is currently limited with what hardware it works with. With the 9310i, CloneCD did work, and didn't appear to have any issues. This is great news for those that might have certain software that they want to make backups of (so the original CD doesn't get scratched) their favorite software that might be using some kind of crap like "Safe Disc".

Overall the 9310i should be suitable for the average consumer who doesn't demand the 12X speed and wants to save some money. Combine this price/performance delta with a software bundle to die for, and you have one of the more compelling CDR/CDRW solutions around, it's only too bad that HP didn't go the full distance and jump up to 12X CD recording.

DiGiT schrijft dat TweakMax een kleine guide heeft geschreven over wat te doen als de stroom uitvalt als je precies op dat moment je BIOS aan het flashen bent:

Sometime when you're flashing your BIOS, things doesn't end up the way you thought. Maybe you have been sitting there in front of your monitor during a flash and it just stops, or maybe it just happens to be a power failure just at the time when you're flashing. If you're lucky you can still boot your system, at least with your floppy present. In this case you can re-run the whole procedure from the floppy. If you're in bad luck you can't even POST the system.

Some newer motherboards (like some from Gigabyte) have excellent features like dual BIOS chips that allow you to start your system by changing a jumper or something like that. Far from all motherboards have this feature and often a failure while flashing will result in a RMA or an investment of a new BIOS chip. These chips aren't particularly expensive but they can be really hard to find. Under these circumstances "hot swapping" your BIOS could be a solution to your problem. All you really need is a friend who allows you to borrow you his chip. Of course this chip has to be from a motherboard of the same brand, model and revision as your own. It's also very important that the chip is flashed with the right software. For instance, if the chip you borrow hasn't been updated to support Coppermine CPU's and you have a Coppermine in your system, you just have to nicely ask your friend to flash it with the latest software ;-). When all these demands are met it's funtime. =)

Alle mensen die op een andere manier hun BIOS verknoeid hebben kunnen natuurlijk ook het gepatenteerde 8 stappen plan van TweakMax volgen .

De mannen van iXBT-Hardware hebben wat info gepost over VIA's nieuwe processor genaamd Ezra. De CPU zal draaien op een bussnelheid van 266MHz, 128KB L1 en L2 cache dragen en profiteren van SSE support. Verder zal de Ezra geschikt zijn voor zowel Socket 370 als Socket A platforms. Voor de mobiele markt zal er een Low Power versie gemaakt worden.

The former Cyrix and IDT engineers working now at VIA are developing the high performance proccesor core code named Ezra. It will be the first CPU in VIA's processor line with SSE support (both Cyrix III and Samuel support 3Dnow!), it will use 266MHz FSB and features 128KB L1 cache and 128KB L2 cache. The working frequencies are higher than 750 MHz. Initially Ezra will be a Socket 370 solution but VIA also plans to adapt it for Socket A. Besides, VIA is going to enter mobile and Internet appliances market with its mobile versions of Samuel LP, Samuel LP+ and Ezra LP, where LP means Low Power (< 4 Watts).

AMD heeft op haar site benchmarks gepost van de nieuwe AMD K6-2+ en K6-III+ mobile processoren. Het is een simpele ZD WinBench 99 benchmark. Volgens AMD komt de K6-III+ er beter uit dan de mobile P3, zoals je hier ziet:

CNET.com brengt ons een review van Pocket PC, Microsoft's nieuwste versie van Windows CE, het MS OS voor handhelds. Er is wel wat kritiek op het systeem; hoewel het nu een stuk makkelijker en gebrukersvriendelijker is adn de ouse Windows CE, crasht het nu vaker en is de handschriftherkenning nog net zo als onder CE:

Unlike Palm OS's easy Grafitti writing program, Pocket PC's character recognizer is inconsistent. We like the fact that you can actually see the letters as you write them on the device's screen, but we wish that the character recognizer would translate written characters into the correct letters.

Although Pocket PC has many helpful Windows similarities, it also inherited one of the OS's most annoying traits: it crashes. Just like good ol' Windows 98, this little OS crashes more often than we'd like. Our machine froze four times in less than three hours.

De mensen van GA-Hardware hebben een aardige review geschreven van de KA7, Abit's welbekende Athlon mobo met KX133 chipset. De reviewer gebruikte een Athlon 900 voor de test die hij stabiel kon krijgen op 1100 MHz (FSB 122MHz) na wat gerotzooi met de geheugensettings. Dit was zonder extra koeling. Men was ook erg enthousiast over de vele features van de KA7:

As with any new product, there are design choices along the way. One thing about ABIT is that their products are really aimed at enthusiasts. In this particular case, it has made them rather different than the "average" KX133 motherboard. For starters, ABIT is the only manufacturer to drop the AMR (Audio Modem Riser). Beyond that they also clipped out the onboard sound. Why did they remove these? Because their target audience is not very likely to use either one.

What did they add? Well, you get a sixth PCI slot as well as still having an ISA slot. That is pretty unique among the KX133s. Also, the KA7 is one of two KX133 motherboards with a 4th DIMM slot. ABIT also gives you their BIOS which allows you to tweak Front Side Bus speeds in 1MHz increments, which is handy in overclocking. As an added bonus, you get a thermistor that you can use for temperature monitoring on any component in your case.

iXBT heeft een artikel gepost waarin zij de toekomst en mogelijkheden van DDR SDRAM eens bekijken. Ook hier zijn de uitkomsten weer zeer positief voor DDR SDRAM met als grote pluspunten de prijs (het kost nauwelijks meer dan gewoon SDRAM om het te maken) en de performance, die in veel gevallen boven die van RDRAM blijkt te liggen.

According to the preliminary benchmarks for Samurai, the system built on it performs as that on i840 and sometimes proves even faster. Bearing in mind the today's RIMM cost, which is very unlikely to get a few times lower this year, as well as the memory size of servers and workstations, we get a really impressive price difference between the solutions with DDR SDRAM and RDRAM. Though the performance of both systems is practically the same, the price differs by thousands of bucks!

En hier nog een benchmarkje om iedereen even lekker te maken:

Steven Guess van Tech Extreme heeft een artikel geschreven over de prijsstrategie van AMD. Volgens Steven probeert AMD de tragere Athlons (650MHz en daaronder) snel van de markt te halen om op die manier consumenten eerder richting de snellere processors te pushen. Deze snelle processor range (700MHz +) is nou net het gebied waar Intel niet goed vertegenwoordigd is vanwege haar bekende leveringsproblemen.

To close in on the real reason AMD is pricing the way it is come April 24th, let's take a look at the numbers for it's 600, 650, and 700 models. The 600Mhz model (in quantities of 1000) will cost $170, the 650Mhz model will cost $170 and the 700Mhz model will cost $197. Look at the numbers; the 600 and 650Mhz models are being phased out. AMD is doing to the 600 models what it did to the 500 and 550Mhz chips months before. It is pushing consumers and OEM's towards the high-speeds. But why push? The market gradually moves ahead anyway, why is there a need to artificially inflate them? Because they are taking the CPU wars to a playing field heavily in AMD's favor.

Now it makes sense. AMD wants to convert its production resources to higher speeds so that the entire industry maneuvers into a state where most models sold are at 650, 700+ speeds-where it can compete. Those are the very speeds that Intel cannot cope with. AMD is hoping to have ads across the country showing the 550, 600Mhz Pentium 3 models sitting on the page opposite 650 and 700 Athlon systems. Consumer's don't have really have loyalties, and they really don't care what brand processor is in their machine. High end users do, but the vast majority of the public really doesn't understand the difference between an Athlon's FSB and a Coppermine FSB, not to mention the cache speed of an Athlon versus the Pentium 3. AMD hopes that when they see a higher number on one page and a lower one on the other they make the simple, and quite logical, decision to pick Athlon systems. More bang for your buck. It's basic consumer math.

It has been a while since 3dfx last released a product. Actually, it's been a year a year since we first saw the Voodoo3 3500TV hit the shelf. However, in the time since then, 3dfx has been hard at work on their next product, code-named Napalm. With troubles in its development, 3dfx was forced to push Napalm back. However, finally last November they announced Napalm, at the chip level as the VSA-100 and at the board level Voodoo4 and Voodoo5.

Voodoo4 is their low-end board, where as Voodoo5 is their mid-range and high-end, coming in with different configurations. Their mid-range board, the Voodoo5 5500, which 3dfx expects to be the hottest selling, comes with 64 MB of memory, two VSA-100 chips, and comes at a price of $299.

Jammer genoeg zijn er geen benchmarks die laten zien hoeveel sneller de kaart is als een GeForce, er zijn wel benchmarks die laten zien dat 1600x1200x32 aardig speelbaar is zolang je maar geen FSAA gebruikt .

Reflex schrijft dat Juniper een chip heeft ontworpen waarmee het mogelijk is om twintig miljoen datapakketten per seconde te scannen en dan een hogere prioriteit geven aan belangrijkere data. Hiermee moet het dus mogelijk zijn volgens Juniper om een website effectief te beveiligen tegen DOS attacks :

Juniper Networks heeft een nieuwe chip ontwikkeld voor haar netwerkapparatuur, die websites kan beschermen tegen aanvallen van binnendringers. Volgens Juniper gaat het om een nieuwe processor die al het dataverkeer zonder vertraging scant. Deze chip zou aanvallen van hackers, zoals die in februari op een aantal top-websites, kunnen voorkomen.

In het verleden was dit via software al mogelijk, maar dit zorgde voor een enorme vertraging op het netwerk. De nieuwe chip met de naam 'Internet Processor II' kan twintig miljoen datapakketten per seconde filteren. Met de software was het slechts mogelijk 200.000 datapakketten per seconde te scannen.

De Canadese pliesie heeft de 15-jarige 'MafiaBoy' aangehouden. Hij wordt ervan verdacht schuldig te zijn aan de DoS-aanvallen op o.a. CNN.com, Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, Excite en Etrade van begin februari:

De FBI is al ruim twee maanden druk doende de identiteit van de cybervandaal te achterhalen. In eerste instantie was ene 'Coolio' de hoofdverdachte. Later kwam daar 'Mafiaboy' bij. Gedurende het onderzoek werd het federale bureau overigens zelf ook het slachtoffer van DoS-vandalen.

Coolio lijkt vrij uit te gaan, althans voor de aanvallen van begin februari. Wel hangt hem een gevangenisstraf van 15 jaar boven het hoofd vanwege het hacken van een anti-drugssite. Dit gebeurde vorig jaar.

[...] Volgens ABC News zijn de onderzoekers op het spoor van Mafiaboy gekomen door de logfiles van een computer van de University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) te onderzoeken. Deze zou in ieder geval zijn gebruikt voor de aanval op CNN.com, uiteraard zonder medeweten van de beheerders. Mafiaboy zou op 8 februari in de UCSB-computers hebben ingebroken.

Verder stelt ABC News dat de FBI chatroom-logfiles heeft bekeken waaruit zou blijken dat Mafiaboys de raad van anderen heeft ingewonnen over welke sites hij te grazen zou moeten nemen.

WebWereld meldt in dit artikel dat er wederom een beta van Microsoft's nieuwe OS codenaam Whistler is uitgelekt. Vorige maand was dit namelijk ook al het geval.

Microsoft gaat – ongewild – open source. Een eerder prototype van Whistler – de codenaam voor de opvolger van zowel Windows Me als Windows 2000 – lekte vorige maand al uit. Dit was Build 2211.1. Microsoft kondigde toen aan een onderzoek in te stellen.

Dit heeft kennelijk niet tot de gewenste resultaten geleid, want een nieuw prototype – Build 2223 – heeft ook het intranet van Redmond weten te ontstijgen. Net als bij Build 2211.1 had Bob Stein van aan Windows gewijde site ActiveWin de primeur.

Het uitlekken van Whistler is pijnlijk voor Microsoft. De softwaregigant houdt de ontwikkeling van haar software immer binnen de deuren. Betatesters en softwarepartners moeten overeenkomsten tekenen voor strikte geheimhouding.

De Telegraaf schrijft dat minister Vermeend (Sociale Zaken) en staatssecretaris Bos (Financiën) met een plan bezig zijn getiteld 'PC-privé voor iedereen' waardoor Nederlanders een fikse belastingkorting van tot wel 52% kunnen verwachten bij de aanschaf aan een nieuwe PC. In eerste instantie geldt de regeling vooral voor 65-plussers en mensen met een uitkering. Werknemers die al eerder van PC-privé projecten konden profiteren mogen echter ook een versoepeling van de regels tegemoet zien.

Vermeend en Bos willen met hun computerplan vooral voorkomen dat in Nederland snel een tweedeling ontstaat tussen personen die wel een computer- en internetverbinding hebben en mensen doorgaans met lage inkomens die dit niet hebben.

Uit recente cijfers blijkt heel duidelijk dat het computergebruik en computerbezit in ons land zeer snel toeneemt, maar dat ouderen en mensen met lage inkomens hier zeer ver bij achter blijven.

D66-leider Thom de Graaf lanceerde eerder deze week reeds het plan om via een belastingaftrek van 2000 gulden de computer extra te stimuleren, maar in kringen rond het kabinet wordt gemeld dat een speciale aftrek niet goed past in het nieuwe belastingstelsel, waarin immers fors is geschrapt in aftrekposten.

This Problem was introduced with CloneCD Version 2.0.1.1 while adding the following fix: Philips CD-ROMs (possibly others, too): Fixed problem, of not correctly detecting Mode2 data tracks. The problem is now solved in a different way, which should be compatible with all readers and writers.

Bug fixes:

• When reading a Software Title, which has read errors at the end of a Data Track with SubChannel reading switched on, starting the write process would give you the error message "*.sub doesn't match to *.ccd", if the reading device has a positive SubChannel to MainChannel offset (most readers have a positive offset, e.g. all Toshiba CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs).
• Closing the "Info" window, while an analysis was in progress, could lead to a crash.
• The Time counter kept running, if a read error occurred.

AGN Hardware verrast ons met een preview van de Voodoo5 5500. Net zoals bij de HardOCP preview van eerder deze morgen heeft AGN Hardware helaas geen direkte prestatievergelijking met de GeForce. Wel krijgen we alvast te horen dat de V5-5000 sneller is dan de Voodoo3 en GeForce, maar dat was te verwachten:

Speed wise, the board is certainly an improvement over Voodoo 3, but this was to be expected. We also expected to see better than GeForce performance (more on that tomorrow with some side by side numbers!). The real test will be the performance Vs. the 5500 and the NV15 (GeForce 2 GTS or whatever they decide to call it).

Either way, here are our first round of results showing Q3A Fastest and High Quality performance with FSAA turned off and on (2X FSAA, we will begin testing 4X FSAA tomorrow). We used the following system for testing:

Volgens de benchmarks van AGN Hardware haalt de V5-5500 in 3DMark2000 op een resolutie van 1024 * 768 met 16-bit kleur een score van 2941. De 5803 3D marks uit de PCPop benchmarks zijn dan wel errug bruut. Opmerkelijk is trouwens wel dat de GeForce II volgens PCPop zonder hardware T&L nog maar 3538 haalt.

SaINt schrijft: "Vandaag is de Mozilla Milestone 15 gereleased. Geen nieuwe Netscape dus, maar zoals alle voorgaande Milestones alleen een nieuwe uitgave van de engine".

Milestone 15 kun je via deze link van Mozilla.org wegtrekken. Op dit moment zijn er distributies beschikbaar voor Win32, Linux i386 en OpenVMS. Versies voor andere platformen (Mac, Linux Alpha, Solaris enz.) zullen op korte termijn beschikbaar komen.

TouW schrijft: "Was toevallig toch even op die wazige PCPOP-site aan het rondneuzen en kwam toen benchmarks van de nieuwe Geforce II tegen. Het is prima te begrijpen als je een language pack installeerd en de taal kent . Een ding is duidelijk: hij is SNEL!"

Volgens de benchmarks van PCPop haalt de GeForce II op een PIII-700 in 3DMark2000 een score van 5803. De V5-5500 van HardOCP haalt 3643, maar het is de vraag in hoeverre deze resultaten vergelijkbaar zijn. De benchmarks van PCPop werden op 1024 * 768 met 16-bit kleur gedraaid. HardOCP gebruikt een PIII-650, maar de gebruikte resolutie is onbekend.

Uit een onderzoek van de faculteit massa communicatie van de Tamkang Universiteit (somewhere in Taiwannistan) is gebleken dat Wappende Taiwanners momenteel ontevreden zijn over de snelheid, kosten en mogelijkheden van het zwaar overhypte Wireless Application Protocol. 86,5 procent van de ondervraagden vindt WAP te traag, terwijl 85,5% van mening is dat Wappen te duur is (thanks Mart voor de tip):

When asked what they wanted WAP facilities for, 79.4 percent of the 1,000 respondents cited viewing financial information and conducting financial transactions as an important reason.

Making movie ticket, restaurant and travel reservations was named by 77.9 percent of those surveyed, while 76.2 percent nominated traffic and weather information.

General reference services were cited by 75.7 percent, while access to news sites was chosen by 73.4 percent.

Despite the level of dissatisfaction with current WAP services, 43.1 percent of the non-WAP users surveyed by Tamkang University said they plan to buy a WAP-capable mobile phone within a year.

Ik kon het niet laten om ff een WAP nieuwsoverzichtje voor Tweakers.net in elkaar te draaien. Deze kan opgebeamd worden vanaf http://wap.tweakers.net. Aangezien ik zelf niet zo'n WAP GSM heb weet ik alleen nog niet of het ook werkt (kan iemand dat confirmen?). Testen doe ik nu met de WAP emulator van Gelon.net.

Emerce meldt dat de Nederlandse Startpagina kloon PageToStart heeft besloten om met een systeem van dochterpagina's te gaan werken. PageToStart managing director Arjan de Raaf hoopt hiermee een alternatief te bieden voor de Startpagina dochters, die in onzekerheid verkeren door de huidige commotie rond hun financiële positie bij Startpagina.nl:

De timing van De Raaf duidt op een agressieve overname-poging van de dochters. Veel Startpagina-dochters beraden zich momenteel op de toekomst. Net als bij het initiatief van uitgever IDG, wil De Raaf zijn dochters ook een aandeel in de organisatie geven. Ook zal de dochterpagina meedingen naar opbrengsten die gegenereerd worden op de homepage van PageToStart en kan de dochterpagina gebruik maken van de diverse samenwerkingen die PageToStart met partners heeft gesloten zoals nieuws, weer en de zoekmachine Vinden.nl.

"PageToStart hoopt met dit alternatief een nieuwe mogelijkheid voor de huidige dochterpagina's te bieden waarbij eigendomsrechten en andere zaken een duidelijke zaak zullen zijn." aldus Arjan de Raaf.

Chronos komt ons vertellen dat de tamelijke wazige site PCPop.com volgens HardOCP.com een fotootje van de GeForce II heeft gepost. Veel bijzonders valt er niet te zien: een printplaat met daarop (2x)4 DDR SDRAM chips en een heatsink/fan waaronder zich hopelijk een GeForce II chip bevindt:

PCPop was zo vriendelijk om een grote versie van het plaatje online te zetten, maar deze laat helaas geen nieuwe details zien. De typeaanduidingen van de chips zijn weggeretoucheerd.

Na een aantal maanden van onduidelijkheid heeft AMD gisteren eindelijk de K6-2+ en K6-III+ mobile processors aangekondigd. Beide CPU's zijn grotendeels gelijk, maar verschillen in specs op het gebied van de L2 cache: de K6-III+ heeft 256KB on-die L2 cache terwijl de K6-2+ het met 128KB moet doen. Bij de K6-III+ kan bovendien een third level cache toegevoegd worden. Zoals Vorige week al door C|Net werd gemeld zal Hewlett Packard als eerste fabrikant met een K6-2+ notebook op de markt komen:

About PowerNow! Technology

Puntcom.nl schrijft dat IDG, onder meer bekend van Webwereld en Computer!Totaal, plannen heeft om een Startpagina.nl kloon te bouwen. De IDG portal krijgt de naam Favoriet.nl en geeft dochters wel aandelen in de complete toko:

Uitgever IDG overweegt om ook een beginpunt, favoriet.nl voor Internetters te maken, vergelijkbaar met Startpagina.nl. In tegenstelling tot deze net verkochte site aan uitgever VNU, wil Nick van Leeuwen, Online Business Manager bij IDG, de externe partijen tot aandeelhouder maken. Kyle van HardOCP heeft een korte preview gepost van de alpha Voodoo5 5500 die hij in z'n huisje heeft liggen. Uit de Quake III benchmarks blijkt dat de V5-5400 op een resolutie van 800*600px met 4xFSAA, texture compression en max textures een framerate van 35fps trekt. Met 2xFSAA is dit 65,4fps en zonder anti-aliasing blijft er 98,2fps over. Helaas heeft HardOCP nog geen vergelijkende benchmarks van de GeForce, dus het blijft nog even gissen hoe de V5-5500 ten opzichte van de GeForce presteert:

The Voodoo 5 does have two things going for it, solid hardcore framerates for those that NEED it, and some absolutely beautiful eye candy using the FSAA technology. This card is really going to shine when used with flight and space sims.

Overall, if our card is representative of what we will be able to buy off the shelf, it looks to be nothing short of a winner. I just wonder for how long.
