Al voordat er een uitspraak is in de rechtzaak die Metallica heeft aangespannen hebben ze hun eerste overwinning geboekt, studenten van Yale University mogen Napster niet meer gebruiken. De Yale Universiteit werd naast Napster aangeklaagd voor de heling van gestolen goederen (lees MP3's) en nu ze hebben ze eieren voor hun geld gekozen en het niet tot een rechtzaak laten komen:

De stoere rockers van Metallica maakten eerder deze maand bekend dat ze genoeg hebben van de vele illegale Metallica-MP3'tjes die over het web worden verspreid. De softwaremakers van Napster worden als een van de hoofdschuldigen gezien.

Tegelijk met Napster werden echter ook drie universiteiten aangeklaagd, die hun studenten via het snelle universiteitsnetwerk Napster laten gebruiken. Een dezer universiteiten – Yale – heeft eieren voor haar geld gekozen. Studenten van deze elite-universiteit mogen geen Napster meer gebruiken. Heat programma wordt geweerd.

Joshua Krane van AGN Hardware heeft deel 2 van z'n 3dfx Vooodoo5 5500 preview online gekieperd met daarin een aantal nieuwe Unreal Tournament benchmarks. Als resultaat bleek 1280x1024 met 2X FSAA (4X FSAA trek-ie alleen fatsoenlijk op 800 x 600 en lager) de beste keuze te zijn; er werden zo'n 33 frames per seconde geteld. Binnenkort mogen we nog een update verwachten met daarin een vergelijking van de GeForce DDR en ervaringen van de Voodoo5 onder Falcon 4 en Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed. Hieronder alvast wat info, check page 2 van de preview voor de exacte UT scores.

Before we get into the results, I want to say that the Voodoo 5 makes Unreal Tournament playable at almost every resolution under Glide support. D3D performance was also stellar, but we ran into a few hiccups in 32bit color at high resolutions. For some reason or other, anything higher than 1024x768x32 would crash under D3D. I'm not ready to point the finger at 3dfx on this one just yet.

First off, we look at Glide performance. Without FSAA, you can see the sheer power of the Voodoo 5 5500. Where as 1600x1200 was the resolution that "got away" with the Voodoo 3 3500, you can see that it is a totally playable 54+ FPS on the alpha Voodoo 5 5500. Enabling 2X FSAA, you can see an almost 50% decrease in frame rate in most instances. This is due to having to sample each texture twice. 4X FSAA whittles the FPS down even further, making the game almost unplayable at 1024x768. The choice is yours, but 2X FSAA at 1280x1024 seems to give the best balance of speed and image quality.

Tijdens een onderzoek naar de veiligheid van de UBB forums stuitte een aantal FOK!kers en Tweakers op een lek. Na verder zoeken blijkt dat een van de grootste forums van Nederland, het computertotaal forum, OOK niet veilig was.
De 'hackers' hebben hierop een paar minieme wijzigingen aangebracht en vervolgens DIT topic geplaatst op het forum.

Zowel MP3.com als Oracle hadden hetzelfde lek in hun forum. De webmasters van beide sites zijn inmiddels op de hoogte gebracht van het lek.
Het lek bij Computertotaal is inmiddels gedicht. Waarom het forum dicht is terwijl dit absoluut niet nodig is is niet bekend.

De perskabouters van Reuters brengen het nieuws dat ATi volgende week op de WinHEC in New Orleans hun nieuwe 'super-fast' Rage6 videochip aan zullen kondigen. Volgens Reuters heeft de chip 30 miljoen transistors en is-ie complexer dan een Pentium III (die heeft er 28 miljoen). Verder trekt de T&L engine van de Rage6 30 miljoen triangles per seconde. We gaan dus een leuk weekje tegemoet, want in komende dagen zullen ook nVidia en 3dfx hun next generation videokaarten presenteren (thanks hjs voor de tip):

With 30 million transistors -- the gates for electronic signals -- the new chip is twice as complex as Intel Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) Pentium III processor, ATI said. The result of work by 250 ATI engineers over 18 months, the chip will be launched at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in New Orleans. Until then, its name and function details are being kept under wraps.

The Register meldt dat Kingston de prijzen van hun Rambus RIMMetjes vandaag met gemiddeld 35% verlaagd heeft. Sommige produkten gaan zelfs 68% in prijs naar beneden:

Kingston Technology, purveyor of memory modules, said today that it has dropped the price of some of its Rambus RIMMs by as much as 68 per cent.

The average amount of the drop is 35 per cent, Kingston said, and a representative from the firm said that the reason was greater availability and shorter lead times for RIMMs.

[...] A representative claimed that system OEMs, including Dell, Compaq, IBM and HP, are introducing "many new products" which support Rambus memory.

In deze press release op Kingston.com lees ik trouwens dat het om een verlaging van maximaal 35% gaat. Tevens beweert Kingston dat Rambus nu per MHz goedkoper is dan SDRAM. Hierbij wordt PC800 ('800MHz') met 133MHz SDRAM. Voor het gemak vergeten we dat Rambus 16-bit breed is en SDRAM 64-bit...

Internetprovider Casema laat weten dat ze tijdelijk stopt met het aannemen van nieuwe abonnees; al het personeel wordt namelijk ingezet voor het uitbreiden van het huidige netwerk. Volgens het bedrijf zullen bestaande klanten meteen profiteren van de aanpassingen. Verwacht wordt dat het netwerk over een maand of twee sterk genoeg is voor nieuwe abonnees.

Het internetten via de kabel is volgens Casema zo populair dat er meer abonnees zich hebben aangemeld, dan dat de capaciteit van de kabel toestaat. Trage verbindingen en een ondermaatse service zijn het gevolg.
Volgens het bedrijf is 'een discrepantie ontstaan tussen het aantal nieuwe aansluitingen en de daarvoor benodigde uitbreidingen in het netwerk'.
Casema ligt al maanden met een grote groep gebruikers overhoop over de geleverde internetverbinding via de kabel. Volgens de Wannadoo Internet Gebruikersgroep (WIGG) komt Casema regelmatig haar toezeggingen op het gebied van service en snelheid van de verbinding niet na.

Nu.nl waarschuwt ons even dat het weer bijna 26 april is, de datum dat het CIH-virus weer kan toeslaan. Vorig jaar werden er veel poeters getroffen door dit virus, voor dit jaar wordt echter verwacht dat het niet zo'n catastrofe zal worden. Houd voor de zekerheid toch maar even een goede virusscanner bij de hand .

Het CIH 1.2 virus vormt geen risico voor gebruikers van DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows NT, Windows 2000 of Macintosh. Het virus kopieert en wordt alleen actief onder Windows 95 en Windows 98. Het virus kan de harde schijf en de flash BIOS van een geïnfecteerde computer overschrijven wanneer het op 26 april actief wordt hetgeen totaal data-verlies veroorzaakt en de computer mogelijk onbruikbaar maakt.

Volgens Hypponen zal de CIH activering niet zo een groot probleem zijn als in 1999: "Ondanks het feit dat CIH nog steeds een in-the-wild virus is, zijn de meeste geïnfecteerde machines een jaar geleden overschreven toen het virus de laatste keer actief werd. Wanneer CIH een harde schijf overschrijft, overschrijft het ook zijn eigen code waardoor het zichzelf vernietigt".

Een commissie van het ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) heeft een voorstel gedaan tot uitbreiding van de bestaande domeinextensies. Welke er precies bijkomen is nog niet duidelijk, er wordt gedacht aan bijvoorbeeld .shop en .banc. Halverwege juni wordt over dit voorstel beslist.

De aanbeveling is niet unaniem tot stand gekomen, zo meldt persbureau Reuters. Enkele leden van de ICANN vrezen juist een grotere chaos en nog meer pogingen tot domeinkapingen. Bedrijven moeten immers met een uitbreiding nog meer namen vastleggen.

Welke nieuwe toevoegingen er zullen komen, is nog onduidelijk. Voormalig monopolist NSI denkt aan .shop (voor commerciële sites) en .banc (voor banken op het net). Network Solutions is vanzelfsprekend voorstander van de uitbreiding; meer domeinnamen betekent immers meer geld in het laatje voor het registratieorgaan dat nog altijd 80 procent van de markt in handen heeft.

Deel van het voorstel is dat bedrijven met een .com-naam de eerste keus krijgen bij het registreren van een nieuwe naam. Iemand kan er dus niet zomaar met de naam Amazon.shop vandoor gaan.

The Register meldt in dit bericht dat Apple een partij DVD hardware gaat kopen van C-Cube. De chips moeten zorgen voor hardware DVD decoding én encoding. Apple promote ook al de DVD-RAM drives in haar computers, FireWire (iLink / IEEE1394) DV aansluitingen en DV software. Misschien komt er nu een Apple die allerlei videobewerkingstaken in zich kan verenigen...

Apple is certainly pushing desktop video hard, but editing movies on your Mac is only part of the process - you also need to store then, ideally in a way that allows others to view the results too. Home movies wouldn't be home movies, if you couldn't torture a captive audience of neighbours with the things.

Apple's support for FireWire and offering Final Cut/iMovie only provides the basis for half a modern consumer digital video system. DVD authoring and encoding tools will turn it into a mature product.

And not just for consumers, but professionals too. Apple's recently announced partnership with Matrox over the latter's Final Cut-oriented RTMac real-time desktop video input, editing and output card, plus its work with Pinnacle to develop the Targa Cine, a high-end uncompressed video solution, shows the company working hard to get the Mac back into markets that its waning relations with Avid have allowed it to slip out of.

C|NET meldt dat S3 grote plannen heeft met MP3 toepassingen in haar producten. Zo kunnen consumenten binnenkort genieten van MP3 music files in bijvoorbeeld telefooncellen en organizers, aldus S3 CEO Ken Potasher. Sinds VIA de graphics divisie van S3 heeft overgekocht focust het bedrijf zich vooral op MP3 en internet gadgets.

The company is entering a highly competitive market, however. Consumer electronics giant Sony has released a new version of its Walkman and a minuscule device dubbed "Music Clip" for playing MP3s. Creative Labs and other Asian manufacturers specializing in inexpensive electronics goods are producing cheap MP3 players. And as with personal computers, these devices will become more powerful as well as less expensive as the technology improves.

"MP3 is one of those things where the first generation of devices are single function. Once you see that it makes sense, you can combine MP3 functionality almost for free," said Linley Gwennap, principal at the Linley Group. "A standalone MP3 player probably doesn't make a lot of sense in the long run."

To remain ahead of the competition, Potasher says several products are in the works. A stereo-like player dubbed the RioRack will allow consumers to download MP3 files directly from the Internet for playback. The device is expected to hit the market in the next two months. Also, S3 is building digital music players for cars. A proliferation of basic Rio players, marketed in conjunction with other corporate partners, can also be expected.

Under these deals, a company such as Hewlett-Packard or Fidelity Investments would sell MP3 players co-branded with S3. In turn, S3 would "get a substantial cut" of customer revenues.

"We've signed some strategic partners over the last six months, " Potasher said.

Lets take a look at some of your choices. Products like Winproxy, Wingate, Sygate, SoftRouter Plus, Microsoft's ICS, and MidPoint all have the ability to share bandwidth. Plus some have Proxy abilities too which basically allow you too cache the locations you visit on the net. Most all of these solutions use NAT in some form or another. NAT (Network Address Translation) will translate public (Internet) IP addresses to private (you LAN) IP addresses. The translation is done behind the scenes so you won't see it. NAT also provides security by hiding private IP addresses from the Internets public IPs.

Lets start with the free solution, ICS. Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows 2000 both come bundled with Internet connection sharing software. It's called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) pretty clever huh? There are some good diagrams on how its setup here on Microsoft's site. There's also some good info here to see how it works in the real world. One of the other solutions I mentioned was Winproxy. Winproxy is a great program to share your connection. I've used the older version, which ran well, and I used the new version as well. It comes bundled with a firewall, proxy, DNS, DHCP, and a virus checker. It has many options and it's fairly easy to setup. I've run it on Windows 98, and Windows NT 4 Server. I've had Linux, Window 98, Windows 2000, and NT clients all run through it as well.

Bij 3DRage hebben ze een aantal Quake III benchmarks gepost van de nVidia Detonator 5.14 drivers. Vooral onder NT4 blijken de drivers veel goeds te doen; een winst van ongeveer 25 procent! Windows 98 profiteert van zo'n 14 procent winst, Windows 2000 gaat er helaas in High Quality mode wat op achteruit.

Nvidia beta drivers seem to have a bad habit of getting "leaked". The latest crop, versions 5.13 and 5.14 (which you can snag here), have been the subject of much discussion lately. One feature of the new drivers is full scene anti-aliasing via a software hack, but I am not going to go into that as it does not work well at all on my system. What I do have for you is a boatload of Quake III benchmarks on three, count 'em, THREE different Windows operating systems- 98, NT 4, and 2000- comparing the official reference drivers to version 5.14. I am going to keep the commentary to a minimum as the numbers mostly speak for themselves.

[...] Currently, only a few TV cards can be used under Windows 2000. The reason: many manufacturers don't offer device drivers for the new operating system yet. In addition, Microsoft hasn't integrated a standard PAL version TV viewer for Europeans in Windows 2000, despite their original intention. This means that the manufacturers and vendors of TV cards will have no alternative but to develop their own TV viewers. ATI (All in Wonder 128) and Pinnacle (Studio PCTV Pro) have set a good example here and already offer full support for Windows 2000.

De Amerikaanse ITC (International Trade Commission) is een onderzoek gestart naar beschuldigingen van Rambus Inc. dat Hitachi in hun SDRAM chips gebruik maakt van technologiën die door Rambus zijn gepatenteerd:

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has voted to institute an investigation of certain synchronous dynamic random access memory devices, microprocessors, and products containing same. The products at issue in this investigation are SDRAM devices and microprocessor chips that are used in computers and other electronic products, including some video game consoles.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Rambus, Inc., of Mountain View, CA, on March 23, 2000, and supplemented on April 4, 2000, and April 12, 2000. The complaint, as supplemented, alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States, the sale for importation, and the sale within the United States after importation of certain SDRAMs, microprocessors, and products containing same that infringe patents owned by Rambus, Inc. In its complaint, Rambus requests that the ITC issue a permanent exclusion order and a permanent cease and desist order.

Hitachi heeft op hun beurt een aanklacht tegen Rambus Inc. ingediend omdat deze patenten van de JEDEC 'gejat' zou hebben. Meer daarover lees je in deze nieuwsposting van eind maart.

Intel heeft sterke financiële resultaten voor het eerste kwartaal van 2000 bekend gemaakt. Bij een omzet van 8 miljard dollar werd een winst van 3,1 miljard dollar gedraaid (!). Tevens werd door Intel bevestigd dat het problemen heeft om aan de enorme vraag naar processors te voldoen. Om deze problemen te fixen wil Intel meer pieken in de vergroting van produktiecapaciteit investeren. Aan het eind van dit jaar zal Intel haar 0,18micron produktie uitgebreid hebben van 5 naar 8 fabs:

Demand exceeded supply for Intel microprocessors in the first half of this year, and that has led to an uncomfortable shortage of chips, CEO Craig Barrett conceded yesterday as the firm reported its Q1 financial results.

That is leading Intel to spend more money investing in increased fab capacity, Barrett said. "While supply remains tight entering the second quarter, we are ramping our .18 micron manufacturing technology rapidly in five facilities, and expanding to eight facilities by year-end, which will substantially increase supply in the coming quarters. We are excited about our product introductions slated for the second half, when we will refresh our entire microprocessor line."

Barrett claimed that Intel will have eight .18 micron fabs running by the end of 2000. Last week, as reported here, Intel notified many of its PC customers that they would have supply constraints until June or July, and those would be particularly tight for processor speeds of 700MHz and above.

iXBT Labs brengt ons de specificaties van de Trident Blade XP videochip, die twee dagen geleden werd aangekondigd. Hoewel Trident geen al te beste reputatie heeft, ziet de Blade XP er toch veelbelovend uit: 256-bit processor (4 pixels per clock?) op 200MHz met dual memory bus. Massa produktie zal in het derde kwartaal van start gaan, maar samples zijn inmiddels al beschikbaar:

Besides supporting the CRT with a 350MHz RAMDAC, Blade XP also supports a simultaneous flat panel which interfaces to a 12-bit, 170MHz data bus with a standard external TMDS driver enabling up to the UXGA resolution (1600x1280).

The chips are produced with .18 process which provides ultra low power consumption of 2.1 watts at 150 MHz (or 2.8 watts at 200 MHz) . The samples are available now with mass production in Q3'2000. In 10,000 unit quantities, the 150 MHz Blade XP and 200 MHz Blade XP are priced at $27 and $32 each, respectively

Why is the industry not ready? Because RAMBUS does not perform like it should. Moreover, RAMBUS is a medicine for a sickness that does not exist; a solution for a problem that is not there yet.

The solution RAMBUS supplies is bandwidth; however, the problem is not there. Most PCs really don't need such high memory bandwidth. Even with PC100 (whose bandwith is 800 MB/s), bandwidth is a non-issue for today's applications and games. Even an intense game, like Quake 3, uses only about 350 to 450MB/s at the most. If you combine UDMA 66, 100Mb/s Ethernet I/O, 12Mb/s USB and sound, you are still far from taxing a 133MB/s PCI bus. The argument that memory bandwidth is needed for increased I/O bandwidth is simply not there.

Higher resolutions, higher frame rates and larger textures, resulting from increasingly realistic 3D games, are pushing video chipset technology to its limits. Naast wat antwoorden op std vragen over de Voodoo5 weet Alf onder andere te vertellen dat de Voodoo5 6000 een maand na de V5-5500 gereleased zal worden. Begin deze maand werd door GA-Source nog gemeld dat de release van de V5-6000 met enkele maanden was uitgesteld:

Q: I have saved up my money since you announced this card. How much longer after the Voodoo5 5500 ships will we see the 6000?

A: It's going to be around a month after the 5500 is released but again I don't have anything more concrete than that.

Q: I went to the pre-release site today and it asks for a 6-8 week lead time!?! (from the on-line 3dfx store) Would it be better to go to the Austin CompUSA or Best Buy rather than the pre-sales route if I want to get the V5500 the soonest?

A: Voodoo 5 products will be made available to all consumers who place a pre-order with one of 3dfx' authorized pre-order program participants on the same day regardless of where they chose to preorder from. We are scheduled to ship to retailers in the same time frame. So it is probably going to be just a matter of what is more conveininet to you since it will largely be at the same time.

Micron zal volgende week op de Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in New Orleans een demonstratie geven van haar in eigen huis ontwikkelde Samurai DDR SDRAM memory controller. Micron will demonstrate a dual processor, single controller platform that has achieved industry-leading scores in multiple independent performance benchmark testing. Fujitsu’s new Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) technology, which uses oil in the place of conventional ball bearings, together with silent-mode drive control firmware, allows Fujitsu to offer drives with lower acoustic ratings. Acoustic demands on disk drives are increasingly important because many more advanced electronic devices for the home require storage.

Additionally, because of the dampening effect caused by the existence of oil in the shaft, Fujitsu’s FDB drives have improved shock resistance, especially during quick operational and non-operational shock instances.

Guillemot sent a GeForce 2 to Meristation.com (most important Spain's hard/soft site) so they can test it and make a report. This report will be released next Wednesday April 26th 2000, not before cause NVidia don't want the tech spec to be known by 3Dfx. Ik kreeg gisteren van Guillemot NL nog een mailtje dat zij volgende week een pers conferentie organiseren waarin de 'nieuwste, revolutionaire grafische kaart' van Hercules gepresenteerd wordt. Dus als de force meezit zie ik volgende week een GeForce 2.

De KA7 is nog amper verkrijgbaar en Abit heeft al een BIOS update klaargebakken. Wat er veranderd is in het KA7 KR BIOS is nog niet bekend, maar volgens HardOCP heeft de update een positieve invloed op de toch al goede overklokbaarheid van de KA7... klinkt veelbelovend.

Adaptec heeft in navolging van Promise, American Megatrends en Iwill een IDE RAID controller op de markt gebracht. In tegenstelling tot de produkten van deze drie fabrikanten kan de Adaptec AAA-UDMA RAID controller wél overweg met RAID level 5.
