Ik kwam bij JC deze handige Rambus vs SDRAM prijsvergelijking tegen. $999 voor een reepje van 128Mb, ff slikken:
Paul Cienciera informs me of some Samsung Direct Rambus DRAM prices (for 64MB and 128MB) at Mushkin. For comparative purposes, I'm listing similar size PC100 and PC133 memory prices, calculated by averaging the first page of pricewatch for each item:[break] Het is te verwachten dat deze extreem hoge Rambus prijzen snel zullen dalen: [/break] DRDRAM seems expensive now, but these prices likely reflect "newness" and should sharply drop (remember, for instance, three mere months ago the K7-650 was a thousand bucks and now it is half that price). Of course, right now (if these prices reflect current reality), DRDRAM is 5.5 to 6.0 times the price of PC133 memory, and 6.5 to 7.0 times the price of PC100 memory. This delta should compress by a lot, but I get the aching suspicion that there's still going to be a rather large differential between PC133 SDRAM and PC800 DRDRAM. If PC800 were unquestionably and substantially faster than PC100/133 in all (or most) performance categories, I could understand this gulf. But the comparisons I've seen generally seem to show i820/PC800 being decently faster than BX/PC100 in a couple benchmarks, and within a few percent in the rest (occasionally being slower, as in some SysMark tests and generally D3D gaming benchmarks). In my opinion, this isn't enough to warrant such a deep gulf -- hopefully, market competition will bring the memory prices to more reasonable levels.
