ZDNet schrijft dat de Windows 2000 in maart 2001 opgevolgd zal worden door 'Whistler', een gecombineerd consumer en business besturingssysteem gebaseerd op de NT kernel. Daarnaast zullen er ook Server, Advanced Server en Datacenter versies komen. Een jaar later zal Whistler vervolgens afgelost worden door een Windows versie die op dit moment bekend staat onder de codenaam 'Blackcomb' (deze naam slaat op een heuveltje nabij Seattle):
While Whistler will be the first full-fledged upgrade to Windows 2000, it won't be the release upon which the company is betting its next-generation architecture. Microsoft's Next Generation Windows Services platform -- details of which the company is expected to make public in early May -- will rely on Blackcomb, not Whistler, as one of its key enabling products, say sources.As Microsoft is still in the early stages of working on its Whistler feature list, it seems to have done little to concretize its planned Blackcomb lineup.
