This unified national resource is analogous to an electrical power grid. The TeraGrid will make computational power available to scientists and engineers nationwide who can submit their work without regard to geographical location of the systems. However, the TeraGrid is designed for high end academic research. The intensive workloads would take much too long via even millions of PCs.
[...]Use of the TeraGrid and its terascale computing system will enable scientists to study drug interactions with cancer cells to develop better cancer drugs. It will allow us to further study the human genome and how the brain works, and allow scientists to analyze weather data so quickly that they will be able to create real-time weather forecasts that can predict down to the kilometer where a tornado or other severe storm is likely to hit. It will also help engineers design better aircraft by allowing them to do realistic simulations of new designs. If big enough, something like this could help scientists understand the properties of our universe and how it formed.

The tests we've just carried out give us rather an unexpected result. The higher bandwidth of USB 2.0 doesn't guarantee its supremacy over a FireWire hard drive. On the contrary, the WD1200BB HDD with USB 2.0 fell behind its brothers that worked with ATA/100 and FireWire in all the tests. But, as I have already said in the beginning of the article, we were going to test three real devices: WD1200BB in Addonics Combo Drive, WD External Hard Drive and WD1200BB with Promise Ultra100 TX2, not the three interfaces. So, let's take the results into consideration and wait for future USB 2.0 tests. It's important as this interface is becoming a standard de-facto and we all will have to put up and work with it... More to that, if we recall the speed of USB 1.1, the 7-14MB/sec we have with ATA/ HDD in the Addonics rack will appear just like the heavenly manna.
"I believe that IBM is likely to be a leading player in this trend, which I would characterize as being about more than just autonomic," Gilpin said. "eLiza is a research project that has developed some of the technology that is now being swept up under the autonomic umbrella, but other related research initiatives that are equally interesting as part of the broader picture include IBM's participation in research and standards development around the OGSA (Open Grid Services Architecture), and other work aiming to bring OGSA and Web Services technology together. Put these various initiatives together and you see that the broader picture is about making server resources, or "services" (including application services) available "on demand" (this is a phrase that IBM has been using in describing this broader initiative)."
ATI Technologies has decided to stop introducing its self-made desktop graphics cards into the clone markets in Taiwan and China to move towards its goal of becoming a chip supplier only, the company's Greater China division said, but it will continue offering its ALL-IN-WONDER and workstation-use FIRE GL cards.
The malaise means consumers buying PCs will get a lot for their money. PC makers such as Gateway, Emachines and Hewlett-Packard have been slashing prices and adding rebates for several weeks. Similarly, Microsoft has begun to bundle free games with Xbox to make it more attractive.
Reports from the Far East suggest that pricing for LCD panels will fall to USD10 per diagonal inch by the first quarter of 2003. In the case of 15-inch panels from Taiwan, this is about USD40 below the current best pricing. Keko notes that 15-inch panels have fallen in price by as much as 40 per cent since May. The increased capacity from Samsung and LG.Philips 5G fabs is the reason cited for the USD10 per inch price level. One analyst at Primasia Securities in Taiwan is predicting that this level could be reached before the end of the year.
