Gaat de nieuwe nVidia chip (NV20) 50 miljoen transitoren bevatten? Bij The Tech Report vinden we het gerucht dat dit misschien het geval is. In een stuk van EETimes.com, over onder andere chip verification tools die gebruikt worden tijdens het ontwerpen van nieuwe chips, staat ergens halverwege het volgende:

Malachowsky said Nvidia is using Verix on submodules for a 50 million-transistor chip. For comparison, the GeForce is large at 23 million transistors. A quick check of our handy CPU table will tell you that a Pentium III contains just over 28 million transistors, while an Athlon T-bird weighs in at 37 million transistors.

Let's assume the chip they're working on is their next-gen graphics core, the NV20. What do you think the NV20 is packing that could make it so hefty? Some totally speculative possibilites:

A fair amount of embedded memory on the chip
A sound processor, finally fulfilling NVIDIA's orignial vision for an integrated media processor
A huge frickin' heap of 3D goodness, with massive complexity
Maybe this isn't the NV20; maybe it's a North Bridge motherboard chip with integrated video (and sound?)

Veel speculatie dus. Waarschijnlijk is dit project niet de NV20 maar de opvolger ervan of 1 van de andere hierboven genoemde mogelijkheden omdat de stap vanaf de GeForce wel erg groot zou zijn. TWT dus (Time Will Tell)

Target PC heeft een review geschreven over een 4.1 speakersetje van PolkAudio, de AMR90 speakers. Om de review heel kort samen te vatten: deze speakers wil je niet hebben, tenzij je een liefhebber bent van erg slecht geluid. De satelliet speakertje bleken al bij relatief lage frequenties vervelend te doen, en het aantal verschillende tonen die de subwoofer kon uitpoepen was ook al op één hand te tellen. Tel daar bij op dat de speakers met een normale geluidskaart maar op 25% tot 35% van de maximum output kunnen komen en je snapt waarom deze speakerset een onvoldoende kreeg van de reviewer:

Similar to the Diamond Audio 3025's, the AMR90's had the dreaded one-note bass. In fact, it's the worst case of one-note bass syndrome I've heard in recent years. Maybe I'm old and some kind of fuddy-duddy, but bass notes that keep on going far after the input signal has ceased drives me crazy. In the Polk's case, kick drums had the same sound and bass guitars. Literally, I could not pick out any distinct differences in any type of low frequency music--it all sounded exactly the same. You know those cars that go "boom?" Well, if that's your bag, you'll love the Polks as that's all they do.

The midrange was markedly better than the bass. Voices and other instruments within that critical 300-3000Hz range was reproduced with moderately good accuracy. The midrange imaging ended up being a little too forward or pronounced, but that was due mostly to the severe lack of highs (no dedicated tweeter). The midrange ends up being the AMR90's saving grace. If it wasn't for the modestly good midrange, the Polk's would have scored nearer to the 2/10 range.

The highs were almost totally nonexistent which was surprising for the 2" driver. This driver size is capable of reproducing beyond 10kHz, but the designers chose to use drivers that favored the almighty bass. If the sub control is cranked up past about 25% of maximum, you'd swear the 90's had no midrange either.

3dfx heeft vandaag een press release gepubliceerd over het feit dat nVidia ze aan heeft geklaagd wegens patentschending. Volgens 3dfx is dit een poging van nVidia om een schikking af te dingen in de rechtzaak die 3dfx momenteel tegen nVidia heeft lopen wegens, je raad het al, een schending van een patent (iets over Multi texturing). Als je bedenkt dat nVidia en 3dfx andere makers van grafische chips, die van dezelfde technologie gebruik maken, niet hebben aangeklaagd is het wel duidelijk hoe laat het is...

San Jose , Calif.- August 29, 2000 -3dfx Interactive® Inc. (NASDAQ:TDFX) stated today that it would vigorously defend against claims of patent infringement made by NVIDIA Corporation in a lawsuit filed August 28, 2000. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and concerns five NVIDIA patents. NVIDIA seeks an injunction restraining the Company from manufacturing, selling or importing certain of its products, as well as monetary damages.

The Company previously filed suit against NVIDIA on September 21, 1998 alleging patent infringement of patents owned by the Company relating to NVIDIA's use of multi-texturing technology. Several hearings have been held with respect to this matter and a decision is expected shortly as to claim interpretation regarding those patents.

"NVIDIA's filing of a suit is clearly an attempt to force a settlement of our existing patent infringement lawsuit against NVIDIA, and we believe demonstrates a lack of confidence in their current defense," said Alex Leupp, president and CEO of 3dfx Interactive. "We anticipate receiving rulings as to claim interpretation issues in our existing lawsuit shortly, and are committed to protecting our intellectual property and maximizing the financial benefits of our technology for our shareholders. We regret that NVIDIA feels compelled to resort to these kinds of tactics as a defense of the pending litigation. 3dfx intends to vigorously defend itself against this litigation."

Bij Electic Tech is te lezen dat VIA een deal rond heeft met 3Com. De 3Com netwerkproducten kunnen nu geïntegreerd worden in de VIA Apollo Southbridges. Vooral voor grote OEM's is dit erg handig: er wordt nu een complete, goedkope oplossing aan hen geboden door VIA. Het kan een grote stap voor VIA betekenen om meer invloed te krijgen op het zakelijk segment van de markt, waar het eigenlijk nog allemaal Intel is wat de klok slaat (bij desktops/workstations). 3Com verwacht kennelijk erg veel van VIA, getuige deze uitspraak van vice president Tom Werner:

"3Com has always been at the forefront of technology in the network connections market. This relationship with VIA strengthens our core logic strategy, and positions us extremely well to be at the forefront of this next market evolution."

HardOCP heeft berichten ontvangen van bezoekers die nieuwe Thunderbird en Duron batches hebben gesignaleerd waarbij de multiplier pinnen ontbreken. Eerder werd het ontbreken van de multiplier pinnen al door Soltek geconstateerd. Het lijkt erop dat multiplier tweaking via het inmiddels welbekende L1-bridge trucje niet mogelijk is op alle nieuwe AMD processors. Athlon overklokkers kunnen dus opnieuw op zoek naar een methode om de Tbird/Duron multiplier lock te breken. Anders rest de oude weinig succesvolle methode van FSB overclocking:

Saddened to report we have our first confirmed report of AMD's new successor to the Duron and Athlon, the Pin-is-gone chip on sale to the public. "I just talked to my local computer parts shop. Every Duron and Thunderbird they got in all had the multiplier pins removed. . . . I didn't get to view the chips myself, but I instructed him to look at the pin side of the chip, the side that actually plugs into the socket. He told me on one edge there were obvious pins missing. It's like they're not there."

Over bij GamePC hebben ze een shoutout geplaatst tussen de Toshiba SD-R1002 en de Ricoh MP9060A, twee CD-RW / DVD combo drives die naast het (her)branden en lezen van CD's ook een DVD filmpie kunnen afdraaien. Veel onderling verschil bleek er niet te zijn, behalve dan dat de Ricoh een brandsnelheid van 6 speed heeft ipv 4x. Voor je echter naar de winkel surft is het handig om te weten dat Ricoh zeer binnenkort met een nieuw model komt (12x10x32x + 8xDVD) met Just-Link, een techniek vergelijkbaar met Sanyo's Burn-Proof.

The shootout between the Toshiba SD-R1002 and the Ricoh MP9060A is fairly even. Toshiba earns points because of a superior software bundle and the inclusion of an IDE cable that Ricoh neglected. Ricoh seems to have figured that most users would already have the required cable, but that is not always the case. However, the Ricoh writes CDs faster. If you care more about speed than the accessories, as many do, then the Ricoh may be your best bet. If you need more burn stability while multi-tasking, you are better off with a SCSI drive, but it is the DVD ability that sets these drives apart.

The introduction of combination DVD/CD-RW drives to the market is important, and these drives do not disappoint. This breed of drive will obviously get faster as the DVD/CD-RW transition technology advances, and we look forward to seeing the improved models. Hopefully combo drives will catch up to the burn speeds of dedicated CD-RWs sooner rather than later.

Ricoh in particular, has a new model on the horizon which boasts more competitive specs. They have just announced the MP9120A, which features 12x write, 10x re-write, 32x reading and a 8x DVD-ROM. Additionally, Ricoh includes their own version of Sanyo's Burn-Proof called "Just-Link". Ricoh has said that the new technology is superior to its Sanyo competitor. The drive starts selling September 1st in Japan, and we can only hope the U.S. release won't be too far behind.

Adobe zal over een paar weken Photoshop 6.0 introduceren. Ten opzichte van zijn voorgangers heeft het pakket veel nieuwigheden gekregen zoals een aangepaste interface en een hele emmer vol extra handige features. Hieronder meer info daarover, afkomstig van ZDNet Nederland:

Er zijn verschillende nieuwtjes. Vele gebruikers zullen een zucht slaken als ze horen dat de oude manier om tekst toe te voegen aan een beeld wordt vervangen door een gemakkelijk te gebruiken tekstengine. Het is gedaan met pop-up dialoogvensters; vanaf nu krijg je toegang tot allerlei desktop publishing-features, zoals direct line-editing of de mogelijkheid om 'gewarpte' tekst te bewerken. De vector functionaliteit maakt het mogelijk om een varia aan vormen te creëren en aan te passen. Bovendien kunnen vector elementen worden geëxporteerd naar PDF of PostScript, zonder hun schaalbaarheid te verliezen. PDF-bestanden kunnen nu ook door Photoshop worden ingeladen.

Het aantal lagen wordt aanzienlijk uitgebreid. In de vorige versie kon je een maximum van 99 definiëren. Dat worden er maar liefst 8.000. Gelukkig komt er ook betere layer management, ondermeer met de mogelijkheid om lagen te blokkeren. Vooral beginnende gebruikers hadden problemen om de opties voor de tools terug te vinden, wat nu wordt opgelost door de introductie van een nieuwe contextgevoelige optiebalk boven aan het scherm. Er is ook een nieuwe, gecentraliseerde kleurenbeheer.

Photoshop 6.0 zal ergens in september of oktober verschijnen voor Windows en Mac OS 8.5. Later verschijnt een versie voor de nog te lanceren Mac OS X. Een nederlandstalige 6.0 zal daarna verschijnen.

De nieuwe gratis middagkrant News.nl zal als eerste gebruik maken van streepjescodes onder haar artikelen die door middel van de Scan-pen makkelijk kunnen worden ingelezen. Nadat de pen is aangesloten op de PC kunnen de links worden ingescant zonder dat je dus zelf adressen hoeft te gaan onthouden. Momenteel kunnen 1000 mensen zich aanmelden voor het introductiepanel. Het is de bedoeling dat hierna snel meer bladen en advertenties de techniek zullen gebruiken. Hieronder een plak geleend van Nu.nl:

News.nl is de nieuwe gratis middagkrant die uitgeverij De Telegraaf sinds maandag in de vier grote steden verspreidt. Bij de belangrijkste artikelen staan streepjescodes die verwijzen naar achtergrondartikelen op internet.

Door een speciale scan-pen over de streepjescode (jumpcodes) te halen, kunnen de gewenste artikelen via de computer worden opgroepen, de zogenaamde 'jumptech'-techniek.

Volgens F. Volmer van de uitgeverij staat voorlopig alleen bij redactionele artikelen een streepjescode en een nummer. "Dit is gloednieuw. De kunst is te zorgen dat de verwijzingen voor lezers een toegevoegde waarde zijn. Maar de toepassingen zijn legio, ook op het commerciële vlak."

Duizend lezers van het blad kunnen zich opgeven voor een introductiepanel dat ervaring gaat opdoen met een scanpen. Volmer: "De techniek is ontzettend handig. Vooralsnog beginnen we met een panel van duizend mensen, in een later stadium breiden we het wellicht uit tot alle abonnees en lezers van andere bladen. Ook andere uitgeverijen kunnen het gaan gebruiken.

Het was al een tijdje bekend dat Aureal failliet is en dat er verschillende bedrijven (nVidia, Guillemot en 3dfx) interesse toonden in een overname. Het hoogste bod is echter gedaan door Creative Labs. Zij kopen de hele mikmak over voor 21 miljoen dollar. Hieronder een gedeelte afkomstig van nV News die het nieuws vond op deze Franse site:

The purchase includes any and all of Aureals property both materially and technologically (the brand, the website, the designs, stocks and even customer's credit. As well as the A3D technology, the Vortex processors, and the end of Aureal's lawsuits towards Creative. (Is it just me, or have we seen quite a few of these lately :-)) That last point is probably what pushed Creative to purchase this company at such a high price.

The move comes seven months after Amazon rival barnesandnoble.com (BNBN: Research, Estimates) inked a deal with Microsoft to use Reader software to sell its catalog of digital books. The site allows readers to download Reader software free and features titles from the "Star Trek" series, and best-selling authors Sandra Brown, Robert Ludlum and Scott Turow.

Amazon heeft echter eerder al een overeenkomst gesloten met Adobe, zodat de boeken in PDF formaat gepubliceerd konden worden. Dat kan nog leuke rechtszaken opleveren

Bij Daily Radar is een interview te vinden met Derek Perez, hoofd PR bij NVIDIA. In het interview wordt gesproken over de marketing van NVIDIA en hoe NVIDIA aan de top gekomen is. Ook wordt de interessante vraag gesteld of de GeForce2 Ultra wel op de planning stond, of dat het een reactie was op de ATI Radeon:

DR: Some have complained that the GeForce2 Ultra was released too quickly after the GeForce2 GTS. Was its release to counteract ATi's Radeon card beating the GeForce2 GTS in 32-bit mode benchmarks, or was it going to release in September regardless of the competition?

DP: Every six months we release a new product, and the GeForce2 Ultra is our product for fall of 2000, or this next six months. In regard to ATI, notice that in the benchmarks we didn't need Ultra to beat the Radeon -- with Detonator 3, the original GeForce2 GTS wins in both 16- and 32-bit... hands-down.

Digital Photography Review heeft de spliksplinternieuwe Nikon Coolpix 880 eens onder de loep genomen, nog voordat deze is aangekondigd door Nikon. Deze opvolger van de populaire Coolpix 800 is eigenlijk een stripped-down versie van de Coolpix 990, met een paar functies om het geheel wat gebruikersvriendelijker te maken. De camera heeft dezelfde 3.34Megapixel lens als de 990, maar met een 2.5x optische zoom i.p.v. 3x.

Zoals normaal bij DPReview ook dit keer weer een zeer uitgebreide review met erg veel plaatjes, waarin precies wordt uitgelegd hoe het apparaat werkt en of dat handig is of niet. De beeldkwaliteit van de 880 is nagenoeg gelijk aan die van de Coolpix 990, en dat is een stuk duurdere camera. Ziehier de positieve conclusie:

What can I say? The 880 is simply an excellent digital camera, it takes excellent pictures and has every feature you'd ever need, things that may not seem useful at first but you'll grow into using. For many buyers that was the attraction of the 990, plenty of photographic features, well Kudos to Nikon because instead of stripping the 990 down to produce the 880 they IMPROVED IT!! With the new SCENE modes and newly arranged menus the 880 is better than ever, I'd be just as confident handing it to my grandmother to shoot as use it myself in a really difficult shooting situation.

If you ever considered the 990 but didn't like the swivel lens, or thought it was too highly priced then you really must consider the 880. If you're thinking of Olympus's C-3030Z or Sony's S70 then you must also put the 880 on your list (somewhere near the top) it's simply that good. There's only one thing Nikon could have done to improve the 880, and that's include their rechargeable Lithium battery & charger in the box (that's why it lost half a point for value for money).

Al een tijdje kwam alle vertrouwelijke productinformatie van Apple wel erg snel op het net terecht. Eerder kon je lezen dat Apple een rechtszaak had geopend tegen de mensen die dit gedaan hadden, al wisten ze toen nog niet precies wie het waren. Apple heeft nu uitgevonden dat de informatie verspreidt werd door een interne werknemer van hen, zo is te lezen bij CNet. De werknemer postte de vertrouwelijke informatie op het forum van AppleInsider (dat nu dus echt AppleInsider werd ). Het ging onder andere om Apple's nieuwe muis:

In its suit, Apple alleges the defendant and possibly others posted information about Apple's new mouse and dual-processor PowerMacs before their introduction last month. Apple also said "worker bee" posted information to the AppleInsider site last month about a third product Apple has yet to introduce.

Although Apple named the worker in a court filing, News.com chose not to publish the name because Apple would not confirm whether he is the only employee with that name. An Apple representative also would not say whether the defendant still works at the company.

Volgens psycholoog Andre Hahn van de Berlijnse Humboldt universiteit zijn in Duitsland honderdduizenden duitsers verslaafd aan chatten. In het tijdschrift Focus noemde de psycholoog het getal van 300.000 chatverslaafden. Ideetje voor een nieuw spotje van Sire?

HAMBURG - Honderdduizenden Duitsers kunnen niet meer zonder chatsessies op het internet. "We rekenen momenteel op ongeveer 300.000 chatverslaafden", zegt psycholoog Andre Hahn van de Berlijnse Humboldt universiteit in het Duitse tijdschrift Focus.

Hoe eenzamer iemand is, hoe meer gevaar hij loopt om verslaafd te raken aan de babbelboxen op het internet. Hahn waarschuwt dat het probleem niet moet worden onderschat. "Ouders moeten duidelijke grenzen stellen en de tijd dat hun kind online is beperken. Partners moeten er meer zijn voor elkaar."

Krap vijf miljoen van de Duitse internetgebruikers chatten regelmatig met gesprekspartners over de hele wereld, stelt marktonderzoeksbureau Fittkau & Maass. Volgens een online-monitor hebben 18 miljoen Duitsers een internetverbinding.

PlanetHardware heeft een artikel geschreven waarin zij de x86-64 technologie en de AMD Sledgehammer in het algemeen eens nader bekijken. Zoals bekend is de Sledgehammer AMD's 64-bit antwoord op Intel's Itanium. In tegenstelling tot de Itanium kan de Sledgehammer wel 32-bit applicaties draaien (zonder emulator).

In het artikel wordt duidelijk uitgelegd wat de nieuwe techniek inhoudt. Hier een stukje over het 32-bit en 64-bit draaien van programma's:

The way that AMD is able to support 64-bit and 32-bit operation at the same time requires a brief explanation. X86-64 can operate in one of two operating modes: legacy and the new 'long' mode. Legacy mode allows for operation in the 16/32-bit world, meaning you can run an older 32-bit OS just fine. Long mode requires a 64-bit OS, but can then run in a 32-bit compatibility mode or in the new all 64-bit mode. Compatibility mode allows you to run a 64-bit OS, but still run 16/32-bit applications because it supports those addressing sizes. The 64-bit mode uses strict 64-bit addressing - thus requiring older programs to be re-compiled in order to function properly. The OS itself can invoke this mode on a code-segment basis. The specifics of how the chip determines which mode it is supposed to be operating in under varying conditions isn't clear at this moment in time, though the details may eventually come out of AMD.

PlanetHardware heeft gisteren al een review online gezet van de 1.1GHz Athlon, maar was toen nog niet klaar. Vandaag presenteren zij ook een artikel waarin zij deze processor overclocken. Helaas kregen zij het niet voor elkaar de multiplier te veranderen (aahhh...) en hebben zij dus geprobeerd de FSB te verhogen. Zoals bekend is dit niet dé manier bij Athlon-systemen, maar men kwam toch nog uit met een Gigabyte GA-7ZM op een respectabele 112MHz, zodat de Athlon op 1232MHz liep. In Q3A demo001 waarbij ze er niet bij zeggen op welke resolutie ze draaiden, maar in ieder geval op fastest, kwam men aan een snelheid van 182.6fps. Iets sneller dan de 180fps van de Pentium III 1.13GHz (mama kijk, zie je het, deze is veel sneller!). In de rest van de testen is dit overgeklokte geval ook net ietsje sneller dan de P3. De conclusie is dan ook erg positief:

The Athlon continues to live up to expectations as its speed levels are raised both by AMD and overclockers around the world. It's a great product line in general really, and with prices being so low you owe it to yourself to upgrade your rig to a configuration that can maintain the 72.0fps max in Counter-Strike no matter how many fools are throwing smoke grenades into your field of view.

Intel meanwhile seems to have serious trouble on their hands in terms of ramping up faster versions of their .18mu Coppermine P3 processor. Until the revised .13mu P3 arrives on the market later this year and brings higher MHz speeds with it, Intel may continue losing market share at the high end of the processor market segment to AMD at a faster rate than anyone predicted.

Sjoko schrijft dat Matthew Witheiler van AnandTech een interessant artikeltje heeft geschreven over Bluetooth en HomeRF, 2 draadloze technologieën die waarschijnlijk binnen afzienbare tijd overal te vinden zijn. Bluetooth wordt door Intel gezien als de technologie om iets te doen aan alle kabels bij de PC, het is de vervanging voor seriële, parallelle en USB kabels. HomeRF is een andere draadloze technologie die ontworpen is om thuis een draadloos netwerkje op te zetten, eentje met een snelheid van 1.6Mb per seconde. Een belangrijke feature van HomeRF is dat het bestand is tegen werkende magnetrons, je kan dus zonder problemen popcorn klaarmaken tijdens een heftige deathmatch :

Luckily, companies realize the opportunity for this. Take the wildly popular cordless phone. No loner must one sit near a wall outlet to talk on the phone, but one can easily move around, doing two things at once.

However, sending a voice signal over a 900 MHz frequency to a base that simply amplifies to signal is much simpler than sending information for not only one computer, but many devices to use. It is for this reason that wireless technologies have been lacking from our daily computer life. Previous stabs at mobile technology for the home have all been met with failure: IR due to it's limited capacity, and larger radio type devices due to their cost. Hopefully with Bluetooth and HomeRF entering the scene with a force later this year, wireless connectivity can finally become a reality. Until then, we are stuck with our ethernet cables and our USB ports.

WebWereld meldt dat de dochterpagina's van Startpagina.nl geen links mogen plaatsen naar sites van concurrent Startkabel.nl. Niet alle beheerders waren het hier mee eens. Zo vindt Alex Voets dat de links zijn geplaatst omdat de betreffende sites goed zijn. Hij is van mening dat inhoud boven 'emotionele aspecten' verkozen zou moeten worden:

Startpagina is een offensief gestart tegen linken naar concurrenten. De webmasters hebben alle linkjes op de meer dan 1200 pagina's nagekeken en dochterbeheerders aangeschreven. Zo hebben acht beheerders van dochterpagina's met daarop koppelingen naar pagina's op www.startkabel.nl een zeer dwingende e-mail gekregen met als onderwerp: 'verboden link'. In de e-mail, die WebWereld ontving van een betrokken Startpagina-dochter, kraakt de webmaster van Startpagina.nl de concurrent.

De letterlijke tekst van de e-mail: "We zagen dat je een link op je pagina hebt staan naar een pagina van www.startkabel.nl. Zoals je zeker weet is dit een kopie van Startpagina en een partij die moedwillig Startpagina een slechte naam heeft proberen te bezorgen. Derhalve is het niet toegestaan om naar hun sites te linken."

Voets vindt het jammer dat Startpagina.nl zich klaarblijkelijk laat leiden door emotie en frictie tussen concurrenten. "Er moet een duidelijk onderscheid worden gemaakt tussen kwalitatieve beoordeling en emotionele aspecten. De opzet van Startpagina is veel beter dan die van alle klonen. Het zou getuigen van kracht als de linkjes mogen blijven staan."

In een reactie op de juridische kruistocht van Rambus Inc. tegen een aantal geheugenfabrikanten, heeft Micron op zijn beurt Rambus aangeklaagd wegens schending van de Amerikaanse anti-trust wetten. Rambus Inc. claimt een patent te hebben op de synchrone timing technologie die in SDRAM chips wordt gebruikt en slaagde er eerder in om met een aantal kleinere geheugenfabrikanten, waaronder Toshiba en Hitachi, licentie overeenkomsten te bereiken.

De grote jongens blijken duidelijk minder onder de indruk te zijn van het Rambus advocatenleger. Twee week geleden liet Infineon al weten dat zij alles op alles zullen zetten om de claims van Rambus aan te vechten en nu mogen zij zich dus verheugen in de steun van Micron. Beide bedrijven zijn van mening dat Rambus Inc. zijn patenten onrechtmatig heeft verkregen door destijds als JEDEC-lid patent aan te vragen op technologie die binnen de JEDEC in ontwikkeling was. Dit is nadrukkelijk tegen de reglementen van de JEDEC:

Groot nieuws van het 3D-front. nVidia heeft gisteren haar aartsrivaal 3dfx aangeklaagd wegens patentschending. Mocht nVidia gelijk krijgen, dan zal 3dfx moeten stoppen met de verkoop van hun VooDoo 3/4/5 en VSA-100 series. Een erger drama zou je niet kunnen bedenken voor 3dfx, aangezien dit juist hun hoofdproducten zijn. Kijk ook bij Adrenaline Vault voor een precieze opsomming van welke patenten er overschreven zijn:

The battle over 3-D technology is going to the courtroom. nVidia filed suit against arch-rival 3dfx late Monday, accusing its competitor of patent infringement. It's asking for an injunction which would prevent 3dfx from manufacturing, selling or importing infringing graphics chip and card products including VooDoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 and VSA-100 family of products, as well as monetary damages.

"We have always been on the forefront of innovation in 3D graphics technology and visual computing," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. "This innovation is achieved through the annual investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in research and development. We cannot allow the fruits of this investment to be misappropriated."

ZDNet verblijdt ons met een aantal screenshot van de laatste preview-versie van Windows Whistler. Jammer genoeg pasten twee van de vier plaatjes niet in de posting, dus surf daarvoor naar ZDNet. Techweb meldt dat Nokia, Motorola en Ericsson gezamenlijk een stralingsnorm voor GSM's in ontwikkelingen hebben. Vanaf begin 2001 willen de drie bedrijven hun mobieltjes voorzien van een plakkertje waarmee de consument kan aflezen hoeveel straling het apparaat de wereld in stuurt. Hoewel er tot op heden geen wetenschappelijk bewijs is geleverd voor de schadelijkheid van mobiele telefoons, bestaat er bij consumenten veel onrust over de gevaren van GSM gebruik:

Consumers and organizations concerned about cell phone radiation emissions may have gained a limited victory from mobile phone makers.

Nokia, the world's largest manufacturer, Motorola, and Ericsson are developing a standard to measure specific radiation absorption rates (SAR) and plan to label cell phones with this information next year, the companies said Monday.

"We are waiting for an SAR measurement standard which is expected to be finalized early next year," said Nokia spokesman Tapio Hedman. "Once that standard is in place, we plan to publish the SAR value for all our phones globally."

The Register heeft een interessant artikeltje gepost over de moederplank roadmap van Alpha Processor Inc. (API). In deze roadmap wordt een UP1500 Alpha plankje met 'IG-4' chipset genoemd. 'IG-4' is een afkorting voor 'Irongate-4', de codenaam van de dual Athlon AMD 760MP chipset. Dit doet vermoeden dat API in hun low-end moederplankjes gebruik gaat maken van AMD chipsets. De hieronder genoemde specificaties komen in ieder geval grotendeels overheen met de 760MP chipset:

The firm is readying its Caspian chipset, which will give full support for the 1GHz Alpha, and, in addition is set to roll out three mobos which will be in full production by the end of Q1 next year.

The UP 1500 will support 700MHz Alpha chips and provide DDR memory support, using the IG-4 chipset. It takes DDR DIMMs, supports Soundblaster and AGP2x, as well as having Ethernet support. It includes IDE Ultra DMA 66MHz and 32-bit PCI.

API's UP 2700 will be a Slot B compatible mobo, support 1GHz Alpha microprocessors and above, and use the Caspian chip set. It will provide support for 200MHz DDR DIMMs, which can be added up to 8Gb, has on board SCSI, 2Gb input/output, 66Mhz 64-bit PCI for six slots, and has three slots supporting 33MHz 32-bit PCI. It has 2 Ethernet ports.

The UP 1700 is a uniprocessor mobo, and supports a socketed, rather than a Slot B Alpha. It is similar to the UP 2700.

Eerder gingen er al wat geruchten over de mogelijkheid om dual K7 te draaien in Alpha Slot B plankjes zoals de UP2000. Over de Caspian chipset werd eerder door The Register al geschreven dat deze zowel voor de Alpha als Athlon gebruikt zal kunnen worden.
