Eerder kon je al lezen dat verschillende mensen (Tom, Anand, Kyle) problemen hadden met het stabiel krijgen van de Pentium III 1,13GHz. Intel heeft hierop vandaag gereageerd door de processoren terug te roepen. Intel houdt overigens nog steeds vol dat zij de fouten moeilijk konden vinden, terwijl deze toch duidelijk aanwezig waren bij genoemde personen. Gelukkig kan de schade nog niet erg hoog zijn:

Intel would not say exactly how many 1.13 GHz chips have shipped, but analysts said the number is quite small.[break]Het komt allemaal niet zo goed uit voor Intel, die dit moet doen op hetzelfde moment dat AMD zijn 1.1GHz Athlon gaat leveren. Dit zou ook de reden kunnen zijn voor de fouten:[/break]Analysts say competition with AMD may have caused Intel to release a chip that wasn't ready.

"It sounds like Intel may have pushed a little too hard," said chip analyst Peter Glaskowsky of MicroDesign Resources. "It shows the Pentium III is not really capable of reaching these levels."

Gwennap noted that Intel did not originally have the 1.13-GHz chip on its road map and has struggled to produce the 1-GHz chip in enough quantity to satisfy customers.

"When you push the clock speed beyond what it was designed to do, you run into problems," Gwennap said. "They rushed to get the 1-GHz chip out, and they couldn't produce enough of them."

Dat het internet krijgt steeds meer invloed krijgt blijkt wel weer uit het volgende. Bij Nu.nl kunnen we lezen dat de beurskoers van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Emulex 60% omlaag ging nadat er afgelopen vrijdag een vals bericht op het net werd gepubliceerd. In het onderstaande grafiekje, geript van YaHoo kun je duidelijk zien wat het effect was.

Rond half negen (plaatselijke tijd) werd een persbericht op internet gezet waarin stond dat de directeur van Emulex zijn ontslag ingediend had en dat de 'Securties and Exchange Commission' (vergelijkbaar met de Vereniging Toezicht Effectenverkeer) een onderzoek naar het bedrijf had ingesteld.

Na het bericht deden de aandeelhouders massaal de aandelen van de hand waardoor het aandeel Emulex op de beursvloer 62 procent daalde. Het bedrijf kelderde daardoor ongeveer 6 miljard gulden in waarde.

Hans de Vries, schrijver van het erg interessante .PDFje over de architectuur van de AMD Mustang en Intel Pentium 4, heeft een update op zijn site gepost met verse info van het Intel Developer Forum. Volgens de verwachtingen van Hans wordt de Pentium 4 onder normale omstandigheden circa 10 tot 15% trager dan een Coppermine op gelijke kloksnelheid:

Willamette's die size has grown from 170 mm^2 to 217 mm^2. We estimate this to go down to circa 115 mm^2 in the second half of next year if Intel migrates to its p860 - 130 nm copper process. The complete transition to 130 nm would be ready at the end of 2003.

[...] And now the big question: How does the P4 compare to the Pentium III Coppermine or Athlon at equal clock frequencies? Do we have the courage to do a prediction? Well O.K...Here's our best guess:

5-10% faster for "branch-less" programs like the video encoding benchmark which handles fixed sized data objects and which is memory bandwidth hungry.

10-15% slower for the "average" benchmark.

20-30% slower for unpredictable "jump-happy" programs.

Eerder werden deze verwachtingen ook al door THG, ZDNet en InQuest uitgesproken. Alle aanwijzingen duiden er dus op dat de Mustang en Thunderbird met gemak kunnen concurreren met de Pentium 4, zolang AMD in kloksnelheid kan meescalen met Intel. Het is natuurlijk de vraag in hoeverre AMD hiertoe in staat is. Het wordt tevens interessant om te zien hoe AMD's marketing gebruik gaat maken van het (waarschijnlijke) performance-per-clock voordeel van de Mustang.

Hardware Extreme heeft een review online geplant van de Creative iNFRA 52x cd-rom drive. Unieke features van deze drive zijn de rode turbo knop en de bijgeleverde afstandsbediening. Over de prestaties en het geluidsniveau was de reviewer ook wel te spreken:

Kyle van HardOCP heeft in samenwerking met Anand, Tom en een ventje van Intel een interessante vergelijkingstest gedaan tussen de 1,13GHz PIII's die door Intel werden geleverd aan AnandTech, HardOCP en Tom's Hardware Guide. Van deze drie processors bleken de exemplaren van HardOCP en THG ernstige stabiliteitsproblemen te vertonen.

Nadat de processors dankzij het gezamenlijke werk van de drie hardware helden tot elkaar waren gebracht, kon worden vastgesteld dat het inderdaad niet goed staat gesteld met de stabiliteit van de 1,13GHz Pentium III. Geen enkele processor slaagde erin om de Linux kernel compilation test op 1,13GHz te voltooien. De overige benchmarks werden alleen door de processor van AnandTech met succes doorstaan:

Are there some issues with Intel's 1.13GHz part? I don't know about all of them, but from the ones I have seen and gotten to play with, none of them seem to act the same so it would seem that something is odd at best. Are they "flawed"? I am not going to go as far as to say that, but I don't think I would want the [H]ard|OCP server which runs Redhat Linux to have two PIII 1.13s stuck in it. The fact that all three CPUs failed the Linux compile would be a big red flag in my book and it seemed to be in the Intel engineer's also. He happened to keep his comments to a minimum. I actually had to force a response out of Intel's PR-department, which initially seemed to prefer burying this issue rather than talking to me. These are the messages I received in a telephone conference with Howard High, George Alfs and Gary the engineer:

• Intel is concerned about the issues Kyle and I were seeing with the Pentium III 1.13 GHz and their engineers are trying to duplicate our findings.
• So far Intel could not find any software that would fail on a Pentium III at 1.13 GHz, provided it runs 'within spec'.
• Other platforms besides Intel's specially modified VC820 motherboard are most likely a bad choice for use with the 1.13 GHz Pentium III, unless they were specially approved.
• Intel was indeed able to duplicate the failures Kyle and I had found when, as they put it, the CPU ran 'out of spec'. When I asked to give a bit more detail to this expression Intel admitted that the cooling solution supplied with the test samples were not good enough to ensure that the Pentium III 1.13 GHz is running at less than the allowed 62 degrees centigrade. My comment stating that it was neither hot in Kyle's or my lab and that we are both more than well capable of ensuring effective processor cooling was answered with the statement that the cooling solutions used in the 1.13 GHz OEM-boxes are rather massive indeed. After I told Kyle of Intel's strange remarks he tested the temperature of the CPUs and measured 37 degrees centigrade. I guess there's not much to add ...
• Intel still refrained from really admitting that my sample is faulty. The fact that my sample was the only one of the three that failed on Kyle's BX-platform was disregarded as a test that was conducted on an unsupported platform.

AMD heeft vandaag de NDA van de 1,1GHz Athlon laten vallen en uiteraard kon Tommie niet achterblijven met zijn eigen 1,1GHz Tbird review. Tom's benchmarks laten zien dat de 1,1GHz Thunderbird in vrijwel alle tests sneller is dan de 1GHz Pentium III en dat voor een 25% lagere prijs:

There you have it. AMD has simply taken the next step and brought the Thunderbird core to the next speed grade. It is good to see that this did not require any strange tweaks to the core or to the platform. Basically, the 1.1 GHz Athlon is 'just another Athlon' really. This can only be a good thing compared to Intel's 1.13 GHz Pentium III, which turned out a rather troublesome solution. It is rather obvious that the Thunderbird core offers a lot more clock speed headroom than Intel's Coppermine-core. However, while Coppermine will soon be replaced by 'Willamette' or 'Pentium 4', Athlon will have to stick around a bit longer. AMD will probably be forced to put an even faster Thunderbird up against Intel's future Pentium 4, unless 'Mustang' should indeed be ready very soon.

The same that I said in the review of Intel's Pentium III at 1.13 GHz is obviously valid for AMD's new super-processor as well. Make sure you've got software that justifies the expense!!! I wouldn't know a lot of people that really need this processor right now. However, if you want to go for a top-notch x86-CPU, I'd rather go for AMD's offering. The reason is pretty simple. First of all it seems rather obvious that the Athlon/Thunderbird 1.1 GHz is the more reliable and more flexible solution of the two. It also offers excellent performance and it comes for a much more attractive price than Intel's counterpart.

Een vergelijking met de 1,13GHz PIII was helaas niet mogelijk omdat het exemplaar van Tom te labiel functioneerde om de benchmarks zonder crash te overleven. De 1,1GHz Athlon deed 't prima en draaide ook op 1,15GHz redelijk stabiel. Met uitzondering van de Linux kernel compilation test werden alle benchmarks op deze kloksnelheid met succes voltooid worden.

3D Alpha heeft een review online geknikkerd van de P3 933MHz. In de review wordt deze processor vergeleken met een Duron 650@950 en een Thunderbird 700@900. In de meeste benchmarks blijkt de T-bird op 900MHz iets sneller te zijn, maar de P3 verslaat wel op de meeste punten de Duron. Bij de game benchmarks is de P3 nog steeds koning, al zijn de verschillen minimaal. Het is belangrijk om de P3 te vergelijken met de Duron, omdat dat zijn toekomstige concurrent wordt. hierover wordt geschreven:

As for the PIII vs. Duron battle that will so be on everyone's mind - It's going to be good. The PIII manages to edge out the Duron in the games and 3D tests, but in the proffesional apps, the Duron pulls ahead. Like I said, it is going to be a good fight. The system is just more responsive, there are less delays, and so on... So if that's what you're after this chip may just be for you.

Een Duitse rechtbank heeft besloten dat een PC-dealer gewoon OEM-software van Microsoft mag verkopen zonder dat hier een PC bij geleverd wordt. De rechter bepaalde dat een auteur geen rechten meer heeft nadat het product verkocht is. Eenmaal verkocht aan de dealer, mag deze er alles mee doen wat ie wil. Zoals we gewend zijn van het bedrijf uit Redmond zal Microsoft het er niet bij laten zitten. Waarschijnlijk dus weer een nieuw item voor je lijstje eeuwigdurende rechtzaken:

Microsoft spande een juridische procedure aan tegen een Berlijnse PC-dealer die de besturings-systemen MS-DOS en Windows for Workgroups aan klanten had verkocht zonder een pc te verkopen. Volgens Microsoft heeft het bedrijf daarmee het auteursrecht overtreden. Het Bundesgerichtshof bepaalde echter dat een auteur geen invloed meer kan uitoefenen op het product als het eenmaal is verkocht. Een eventuele doorverkoop, zoals in het geval van de Duitse dealer, valt dan niet meer onder het auteursrecht.

Geheel volgens de traditie van het Amerikaanse softwarebedrijf heeft Microsoft zich niet neergelegd bij het besluit. Volgens woordvoerder Tomas Jensen is het onduidelijk welke software nou los verkocht mag worden en welke niet. "In de rechtszaal werd steeds gesproken over OEM-producten. Maar dat zijn software-versies die worden verkocht aan grote dealers als Compaq en Dell. Aan kleine dealers leveren we DSP's (Delivery Service Packs). Bovendien hebben we de details van de uitspraak nog niet gekregen".

Trouw bericht dat in de Duitse deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen providers op hun hoede moeten zijn. Als zij ruimte bieden aan rechts-radicale sites, kan hen een boete van 500.000 mark worden opgelegd. Op verzoek van Quantum schreef Storage Review een review van de Quantum Atlas 10K II met final firmware. Eerder werden door Storage Review al 2(!) reviews gepost van een Atlas 10K II met oudere firmware revisies. Met de meest recente firmware blijkt de 10K II in alle tests als winnaar naar voren te komen in de 10.000rpm Ultra160 klasse. Vergeleken met de 15.000rpm Seagate Cheetah X15 is de Atlas 10K II nog steeds trager in de IOMeter test. De Quantum Atlas 10K II werd sinds zijn aankondiging eind december door nogal wat leveringsproblemen geplaagd, maar volgens Quantum is de drive nu eindelijk leverbaar. De prijs ligt circa tweehonderd gulden onder die van de Cheetah X15:

n conclusion, the Atlas 10k II's improvements in its IOMeter scores over its prior units allow it to lay claim to just about every SR benchmark, low or high-level, as the 10k champ. We realize the drive has suffered a somewhat maligned history due to our testing of multiple samples as well as the drive's scarce availability… nonetheless, sweeping figures like these are hard to ignore. The Atlas 10k II is the fastest 10k RPM drive around.

Speaking of availability, the drive has been shipping "in volume" since early June. Unfortunately, a general scarcity of parts that have been plaguing the industry as a whole combined with strong demand from OEMs has kept the Atlas 10k II from appearing in mainstream channels alongside offerings from Seagate and IBM. The rather steep estimated price of $949 likely reflects this shortage. Hopefully the supply problem will ease up as time passes. Once its pricing is in line, the Atlas 10k II is the drive to get.

Napster krijgt steun van bekende internet- en technologiebedrijven, zoals Yahoo, AOL, Cisco, Apple en Intel. De giganten zijn het er over eens dat de individu en niet het medium verantwoordelijk moet worden gehouden voor het overtreden van de wet. Ze zijn bang dat dit vonnis grote gevolgen zal hebben voor de technologie-sector, en zijn het niet eens met de rechter. Op dit moment wordt er nog gewacht op het oordeel van het beroepshof:

Een brede coalitie van internet- en technologiegiganten heeft in verschillende verklaringen fel stelling genomen tegen het vonnis dat vorige maand over Napster werd geveld. De brief is opgesteld door verschillende lobbygroeperingen, waarbij grote namen als Yahoo, America Online, Cisco, Apple en Intel aangesloten zijn. Rechter Patel heeft bij haar vonnis over Napster vorige maand de bestaande wetgeving verkeerd geïnterpreteerd, zo stellen de groeperingen.

Als het oordeel van Patel over Napster wordt doorgevoerd naar andere software, zou dat betekenen dat voortaan de technologie, in plaats van individueel gedrag, verantwoordelijk wordt gehouden voor eventuele overtreding van copyrightwetgeving.

Napster is in afwachting van het oordeel van het beroepshof over de uitspraak van rechter Patel op 26 juli. Op 18 augustus hebben de advocaten hun bezwaren bij het beroepshof ingediend. De RIAA heeft tot 8 september om te reageren op de argumenten van Napster.

De mensen van 3DRage hebben een MSI 694D Pro dual FC-PGA mobo gepakt, hier 2 P3 700MHz CPU's op geplant, hen overgeklokt naar 1GHz en daarover een review over geschreven. Het is wel interessant om te zien hoe de dual-configuratie het doet in spellen en benchmarks. Dit is zeer teleurstellend: in alle Q3A-testen is een single-processor config sneller. Ditzelfde geldt voor de Winbench CPUMark 99 test. Alleen bij de CPU Speed test, die dual processoren onder Win2k ondersteund, is een duidelijk verschil in snelheid te zien. De Q3A problemen zijn waarschijnlijk te wijten aan slechte drivers van nVidia, die hier kennelijk niet zo geschikt voor zijn. Ondanks deze kleine probleempjes is 3DRage uiteindelijk toch heel tevreden over het mobo en de processoren:

Onboard Ultra ATA/100 support, four DIMM slots for up to 2GB of SDRAM, four USB ports, and numorous bus speeds render this motherboard an excellent product for the job.

VIAHardware.com heeft een artikel geschreven over PCI-X, en speciaal over de toepassing hiervan in VIA chipsets. VIA is de enige maatschappij die van plan is om PCI-X ook naar de gewone desktop te brengen, en niet alleen naar de server-markt. PCI-X moet nog dit jaar beschikbaar komen in de vorm van de VIA PX266 chipset. Zoals bekend is PCI-X een uitbreiding op de PCI-standaard, en voegt deze een 32/64-bit 133MHz bus toe. Ook werkt PCI-X een stuk efficiënter dan PCI:

Before increasing the frequency or bus width to the PCI spec, the PCI-X engineers concentrated on streamlining the process, and making the bus more efficient. Instead of the delayed transactions used by PCI, PCI uses a system called Split Transactions. Delayed transactions must continually poll the target device to determine that it has received the data, whereas split transactions allow the target device to signal the PCI-X device itself. Also, PCI-X eliminates the wait cycles associated with PCI devices, by removing PCI-X devices from the bus when they do not have data to transmit. These features allow PCI-X to be between 14-34% more efficient then PCI, at a given clock speed/bus width.

De VIA PX266 chipset heeft ondersteuning voor maximaal 4 processoren, maar heeft ook allerlei 'consumenten'-functies ingebouwd als AGP4x, CNR en DDR-SDRAM. De PX266 heeft twee aparte PCI-X controllers tot zijn beschikking, waardoor 66, 100 en 133MHz PCI-X wordt ondersteund, en natuurlijk ook gewoon het 'oude' PCI.

Al is deze review al bijna een maand oud, hij (of zij?) was nog niet onder onze ogen gekomen. Monsterlijk groot is ie wel: maar liefst 23 pagina's. Gelukkig is een ook een 1 pagina print uitgave zodat je niet steeds hoeft te klikken. De review gaat diep in op de features van de Radeon. Daarnaast zijn alle gangbare gamebenchmarks gedraaid om te zien hoe deze kaart zich staande weet te houden. De geteste Radeon kaart was bezet met 64MB DDR RAM en liep vanuit de fabriek op 183/183Mhz. Het maximale wat 3D Concept eruit kreeg was 230/230MHz. Een goede review dus ware het niet dat er voor een aantal Tweakers een klein probleem is: hij is in het Duits geschreven (of fiets even hier heen voor de gedeeltelijke Babelfish vertaling.)

ATi hat mit dem RADEON - Baustein derzeit klar die beste Technik auf dem Markt. Den Vorsprung gegenüber anderen Chipgenerationen wurde klar ausgebaut. Environmental Bump Mapping, Single Cycle Single Pass Tripple Texturing, Dual Parabolid Environment Mapping, hierarchischer Z-Buffer, Keyframe Interpolation, ausgeprägter Pixel Shader, 4faches Matrix-Skinning und 3D Texturen wären 3D - Features, welche die High-End-Mitbewerber nicht bieten können. Dazu gesellen sich MPEG2-Goodies wie Inverse Diskrete Cosinus Transformation (iDCT) und adaptives De-Interlacing. Einige der 3D-Features werden auf dem RADEON mangels Leistung (3D Texturen) und mangels Softwareunterstützung (Keyframe Interpolation) während der Lebenszeit dieser Karte nie ein sinnvolles Einsatzgebiet finden. Von anderen Features wie Environmental Bump Mapping profitiert man jedoch ad hoc bereits in vielen Spielen. Die Fülle an Features verdeutlicht den technologischen Stand des Chips, welcher die GeForce - Serie technisch um mehr als eine halbe Generation abhängt und bei TrueColor - Grafik dank interessanter Finessen effizienter zu Werke geht.

Bij Ars Technica is vandaag het derde deel verschenen van hun RAM Guide. In dit deel wordt uitgebreid uitgelegd hoe DDR en Rambus geheugen werkt. This edition will cover the two next-generation DRAM technologies that are competing for dominance in the PC space. We'll open up this article by talking about DDR DRAM, and how it relates to the current generation of SDRAM. We'll also talk about its strategy for increasing bandwidth, and what makes it a next-generation solution. Then, we'll lay the foundation for a lengthy investigation into RAMBUS technology by considering the closely interrelated issues of transistor counts, pin counts, and granularity. After this discussion, we'll take a look at RAMBUS, starting with the core of the individual RAMBUS chip and working our way outwards until we've covered an entire RAMBUS system implementation.

[...] RAMBUS DRAM is a next-generation DRAM that, instead of taking the features of standard SDRAM and evolving one or two of them, takes DRAM technology and rethinks from the ground up how it should be integrated into a system. The DRAM arrays of memory cells that are at the core of all DRAM types are still there in RDRAM, but the way that a RDRAM-based system accesses those cells is very different. These changes in the way that DRAM cells are organized and accessed are the product of a series of design decisions (many of which were made almost a decade ago) that are aimed not only at providing the high bandwidth that next-generation media applications require but also at solving the granularity and pin count problems that RAMBUS, Inc. expected to accompany rising transistor counts. Assuming that pricing considerations aren't an issue (and with RDRAM they often are), the decision on whether or not to use RDRAM in a system is and should be made based on the actual bandwidth requirements of the system in question and whether or not the granularity and pin count problems that RDRAM tries to solve are actually relevant for that system. And when I say "system," I mean the hardware as well as OS and application software.

Anand en Sharky hebben vandaag ook een review van de 1.1GHz Thunderbird online gezet. Zij hebben in tegenstelling tot Ace's Hardware wel benchmarks van een 1.133GHz Pentium III. Het blijkt dat de performance van beide CPU's erg dicht bij elkaar in de buurt ligt, soms is de ene een paar procent sneller en dan de ander. Op het gebied van performance zit het dus wel snor bij beide processoren, waardoor de factoren verkrijgbaarheid en prijs de belangrijkste criteria worden als je echt het snelste van het snelste moet hebben. Hieronder de conclusie van da haai:

AMD has managed to ship a chip that essentially equals the Pentium III 1.13GHz in performance. They are also offering it at a price $200 lower than the Pentium III. This is fantastic news for AMD, who should be applauded for achieving the difficult task of keeping up with Intel. That's no easy feat. Unfortunately, many people (including us) have had serious reliability problems with Thunderbird CPUs. Between incompatible heat sinks, a vulnerability to overheating, and possible problems from OEM barcodes, the Athlon Thunderbird has had a rough time of it. Still, if you want excellent performance with good bang for the buck compared to the Intel equivalent, the AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.1GHz is quite possibly the chip for you.[break]En hieronder een klein hapje uit Anand's conclusie[/break]The Socket-A market is definitely a growing one. The Thunderbird is very competitive with the Pentium III and AMD has shown, through the release of their 1.1GHz Thunderbird that they can keep up with whatever clock speeds Intel may throw at them, all while making sure that their CPUs are actually available in more than just "limited quantities." The Thunderbirds are noticeably cheaper than their Pentium III counterparts, the only downside is that Socket-A motherboards can be somewhat expensive. We have seen prices fall a bit, however our top picks for Socket-A motherboards are both priced above $150, while prices will come down, for now that is the only drawback.

Het bestaat al best een tijd: internet via de satelliet. Een groot nadeel was altijd echter dat uploaden niet mogelijk was, waardoor je nog steeds een telefoonverbinding moest hebben. Al eerder meldden we over het bedrijf iSky dat twee-weg satellietverbindingen zou gaan aanbieden, maar daar is nooit meer iets van vernomen. MSNBC meldt in een vreselijk lang artikel dat er nu waarschijnlijk wel verandering in de situatie gaat komen. Microsoft zal in samenwerking met Gilat-to-Home Inc. en EchoStar two-way satellietverbindingen gaan aanbieden, die in snelheid vergelijkbaar zullen zijn met kabelinternet. Dit zou best wel eens een goede samenwerking kunnen zijn, zo denken ook de analisten. Gilat zorgt voor de bandbreedte, EchoStar voor de schotels en Microsoft voor de inhoud en marketing. Concurrent American Online is niet van plan twee-weg schotels te gaan verschaffen aan de klanten, aangezien deze volgens een woordvoerder veel te duur zijn:

�Satellite is going to be worth another reassessment,� said Jupiter Communications analyst Joe Laslzo. �As they get their broadband marketing machines up and running we will hear both companies competing with the message �We�re anywhere the customer wants to be.��

MSN has partnered with Israeli firm Gilat-to-Home Inc. and satellite TV provider EchoStar. AOL is teamed DirecTV and its parent, Hughes Electronics Corp. Neither has announced pricing, but both companies said costs for consumers will be competitive with cable and DSL monthly fees. Analysts expect prices to be on the higher end of that range, perhaps $50 or $60 per month, after a setup cost of several hundred dollars.

For once, analysts say, MSN might be able to claim a leg up in a battle with AOL. Gilat-to-Home, a subsidiary Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., will provide the bandwidth, Echostar the dish, and MSN the content and much of the marketing. Microsoft will also include �two-way� dishes that allow downloads and uploads just as fast as cable modems or DSL. AOL said its service will still require a phone line for uploads.

A spokesperson for America Online said the company declined to jump into two-way satellite delivery in part because of the cost � one-way dishes, which cost about $150, are cheaper than the two-way dishes Gilat will sell. �One-way broadband speed is for most people a very compelling high-speed option,� said AOL�s Marta Grutka. �A majority of our users still use dial-up. With �one-way,� you�re able to do things much faster.�

Bij Ace's Hardware hebben ze een review van de 1,1 GHz Athlon geschreven. Wat we natuurlijk allemaal graag willen weten is hoe de 1,1 GHz Athlon presteert ten opzichte van Intel's 1,13 GHz processor. Helaas zit er geen 1,13 GHz processor in de testsystemen dus dat blijft voor ons nog even onduidelijk. De 1,1 GHz Athlon is erg snel, maar ook erg duur. Alleen dus interessant als je het beste van het beste wilt hebben. Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

It would be a serious mistake to claim that we do not need more CPU processing power at home. Ok, a home user will not use his/her PC for constructing the next generation bomb simulator or gene splicing program, but there are gamers out there who want more than lighting fast monster shooters. PC game developers know that PC gamers upgrade frequently and want to distinguish there product from the pack by creating more realistic worlds. The revival of Role Playing and Adventure titles results in a demand for more CPU power, as these games want to immerse the player in a convincing world, stressing the CPU heavily.

Although the Thunderbird could have been designed for even more performance (wider bus between the core and L2-cache) AMD has made some well thought-out tradeoffs. The socketed Thunderbird provides more CPU power than its older brother, is only slightly karger, and thanks to the socket form, is much cheaper to produce. The launch of the higher clocked 1100 and soon 1200 MHz CPU's gives the gamer the opportunity to pick up a slightly slower clocked chip for a good price.

Tijdens het Celeron 366 @ 616MHz met alcohol koeling project kregen we al een kleine sneakpeak van een Voodoo3 kaart die er niet al te best uitzag. De Tech-Junkies hebben nu uit de doeken gedaan hoe ze dat voor elkaar hebben gekregen: door er gewoon 12.000 volt op te zetten!
