It was nice to see the 64MB RADEON perform so well, especially after ATI's past track record. However, I still had my doubts about the 32MB card, clocked significantly lower than the high-end card. Surprisingly, we were able to overclock the 32MB RADEON higher than the 64MB card's default, making it a powerful contender for the high end at a fraction of the cost.
ATI enjoyed a performance advantage for a short time but NVIDIA leapfrogged ATI's 32-bit superiority with their Detonator 3 Series driver. Despite no longer boasting the fastest 3D on the market, the RADEON should not be scoffed at. Its superior video acceleration, crisp 2D quality, and an aggressively competitive price further add to a sweet slice of 3D gaming pie.
In the RADEON 64MB DDR Guide, we compared the RADEON to a Porsche 911 Carrera because of its finesse, power, and high price. Now, after testing the 32MB card, we can safely describe it as a Toyota Supra Turbo. Between overclocking and HyperZ (the twin turbos), ATI's RADEON not only tears up the track, but also does it in a cost effective manner.
