Bavaria schrijft: "Voor alle mensen die er van dromen om later een topgame te maken, maar die niet weten waar ze moeten beginnen met het leren van de benodigde technieken is er nu iets nieuws: In october begint er een online cursus games ontwerpen. De opleiding duurt een jaar, en vind zich plaats op internet, dus ook wij Nederlanders kunnen meedoen.

Je moet wel een beetje geluk hebben, want er kunnen maar 150 man meedoen. Aan het einde van de cursus heb je zelf een spel gemaakt, en dat kun je volgens de site gebruiken om later aan de bak te komen".

Don Whitty, president en voorzitter, vertelt over het initiatief het volgende:

"The rate at which the game industry has grown is phenomenal, but there are still very few game design programs available," Whitty said. "Those that do exist are seat based and require students to pack up and move close to the institution offering the program. Our program is delivered via the Internet, meaning anyone, regardless of geographical location, can take this program and learn game design skills, provided they have a computer and Internet connection.

"The game industry is long known for having programmers 'train on the fly' and this program will reduce the need to do that by giving students strong skills before they enter the industry as programmers. Our contacts in the industry are very excited about this.

EBN Online heeft een interview online staan met AMD over hun processor roadmap. De komende 5 maanden komen er in ieder geval veel nieuwe en snellere Athlons uit, waaronder de Mustang voor workstations en severs, de Palomino (voorheen Corvette genoemd) en de Morgan (voorheen Camaro). De laatste twee komen zowel in mobile als desktop versies en krijgen respectivelijk 256kB en 64kB on-chip cache. Hieronder wat meer info:

EBN: What is the road map for your new Athlon processor versions?

Ruiz: AMD will introduce five new processors between Nov. 15 and Feb. 15. This includes Mustang, which has a range of on-chip cache from 512 Kbytes to 2 Mbytes, depending on customer need. Mustang will be AMD's highest-performance entry into the workstation and server markets.

The Palomino [formerly known as the Corvette] will expand on-chip cache to 256 Kbytes using the Athlon core, and be available in both a desktop and mobile version. A new value-segment processor called Morgan [formerly the Camaro] will have 64-Kbyte on-chip cache and also come in separate desktop and mobile versions.

[Ruiz shrugged off the company's last-minute name changes for some of its processors. “General Motors didn't like some of our previous processor names,” he said, adding that AMD will now “ride horses that aren't trademarked.”]

EBN: AMD and Intel are in a high-performance-processor speed race. How fast does AMD intend to move to new speed grades?

Ruiz: We're shipping 1.1-GHz Athlons in volume. [He declined to divulge the size of these shipments.] This is a real part, not a poster child posing for leadership. On Aug. 28, our OEM customers will announce a range of PC products that can be delivered immediately using 1.1-GHz Athlons.

Animal_X wees ons op een gerucht bij Guru3D dat er misschien een GeForce2 MX kaart met DDR geheugen door Creative uitgebracht gaat worden. Voor de snelheid zal dit echter niet zoveel gaan uitmaken. MX kaarten ondersteunen namelijk 128bit SDR SDRAM of 64bit DDR RAM: beiden hebben een evengrote bandbreedte, dus geen overall snelheidswinst. Geen groot nieuws dus. Het kan wel voordeliger zijn voor Creative omdat ze nu grotere hoeveelheden DDR RAM kunnen afnemen tegen een waarschijnlijk lagere prijs. Wat echter wél leuk is, is dat er ook een PCI versie zal uitkomen, wat zeker voor de multimonitor liefhebbers als ik een mooie uitkomst is. Met de laatste nVidia 6.18 drivers is het namelijk mogenlijk om onder Windows 2000 volledige OpenGL acceleratie te krijgen op elke monitor. Hieronder het stukje van Guru3D:

I gotta be honest here, I have a very good relationship with Creative and they did not confirm this with me yet ! Anyway, according to 3D concept the card should retail for about $150.

Bij Planet Hardware staat een Pentium 4 technology guide online met daarin de weetjes over zijn belangrijkste features, mocht je daar inmiddels nog niet bekend mee zijn. Hieronder vast een samenvattend gedeelte uit de conclusie, het complete verhaal vind je achter deze link.

The upcoming release of the Pentium 4 is reported to occur towards the end of this year, though as shown by Intel in the past, this date could slip forward to Q1 of 2001. There are a couple of items that bother us about the Pentium 4, all of which revolve around price. The performance of the Pentium 4 cannot be accurately gauged at this point in time, and we won't speculate other than to say that the overall system performance of a Pentium 4 system should be significantly higher than a comparable Coppermine Pentium 3 setup. How the Pentium 4 will compare to a comparably clocked Thunderbird with DDR memory remains to be seen, though we'd expect the comparison to be close in applications that don't utilize SSE2 optimization.

There have been some fairly widespread claims that the Pentium 4 lags in performance behind the Pentium 3 in certain areas, though Intel claims the contrary. Intel contends that the ALU and FPU are so strong that they overshadow any pipeline problems that could hinder performance. When we have a P4 test bed system in our labs for full analysis you can bet we'll be looking to gauge its performance level across a large set of applications.

The Pentium 4's die size is a fairly hefty 217mm^2 when compared to the Athlon's 120mm^2. Combine this with the amount of expensive on-die cache that Intel is using, and it has the makings of a rather expensive part. Drop this part into a dual-channel RDRAM setup and you might have to take out that third mortgage on your home just to afford one of these machines.

Wintendo wees ons op dit artikel van Media Central, waarin geschreven wordt dat de duitse BMG (muziekindustrie) in September een soort Napster-variant gaat aanbieden waarbij tegen betaling MP3's gedownload kunnen worden. Zeer waarschijnlijk zal er per nummer betaal worden, maar of de service ook daadwerkelijk gebruikt zal worden moet ik nog maar zien. Met een enorm populair Napster zullen weinig mensen gaan betalen voor iets wat ze ook gratis kunnen krijgen:

Entertainment, the music arm of German media giant Bertelsmann AG is on track to launch its digital download service in September with approximately 50 individual songs and 50 albums available at a variety of Web retail sites, a company executive told Reuters.

The label plans to sell digital versions of its songs across a variety of genres, including top-selling acts such as Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton and Santana. Prices will range from $1.98 to $3.49 for individual songs and $9.98 to $16.98 for each full-length album, said Sami Valkonen, BMG's vice president of business development.

BMG will offer music through a network of retail partners. Valkonen declined to name the retailers, but said they would include Internet arms of traditional retailers as well as retailers that are exclusively on the Web.

De mannen van Evil3D.net hebben een preview het net op gepleurt van de VisionTek GeForce2 MX Twin-View. Naast alle toeters en bellen van een normale GeForce2 MX heeft deze kaart de Twin-View feature, nVidia's term voor Dual Head support. Voorlopig blijkt het nog niet helemaal vlekkeloos te werken, maar dat is ook niet zo verwondelijk met een pre-production kaartje en beta drivers:

The VisionTek P38C01I is a solid card with a rather poor name. But hey, it's an OEM card, remember? By looking at the results it would appear that the card is, for the most part, right on par with the GeForce 256 SDRAM in performance put at a higher price. It certainly isn't the fastest card on the market, or the fastest of the NVIDIA family. But then again, NVIDIA never intended it be.

When will this card come out? Unknown. Most people know that VisionTek uses pure NVIDIA reference drivers. So, with them telling me the drivers aren't ready, that means NVIDIA hasn't gotten them out yet. This in turn probably means that every other vendor that has the hardware ready are also waiting on NVIDIA to finalize the drivers. End result? We will most likely see a mass number of manufacturers all release the card at the same time.

Will you get Twin-View in Linux? Maybe. Not much is known at this point. And with NVIDIA lagging behind on the original ones, getting the new features of the card on a Linux platform might take a good while.

Rizenet: Why has NVIDIA chosen to produce not just the chips, but the entire board for the upcoming Quadro2 PRO \ MXR products? This seems to be deviating from the business plan.

DV: We are selling boards vertically in workstations because the volumes are low and customers want to buy a complete solution. Unlike in the PC market, workstation customers are typically using the machine for a specific, complicated application. This model allows us to get closer to that end-user customer. We have no plans to change our business model in any of our other markets.

Rizenet: What companies will be offering Quadro boards? Any besides ELSA?

DV: NVIDIA will market directly to all major OEMs, while ELSA will receive the worldwide exclusive distribution rights to market to all other channels, including system integrators, value-added resellers and distributors. So only Elsa and NVIDIA will be producing Quadro based boards.

Rizenet: Will the chipset being produced for the X-box be available in the retail PC market?

DV: No, this is a single GPU (not a chipset) designed for Xbox only.
