Adaptec en ServerWorks werken aan PCI-X Ultra320

Adaptec heeft in een press release aangekondigd dat zij met server chipset fabrikant ServerWorks samenwerken om hun dual channel Ultra320 SCSI controller te integreren met de next generation PCI-X chipset van ServerWorks. Adaptec vind dit noodzakelijk omdat dual channel UItra320 in theorie een 64-bit 66MHz PCI bus (528MB/s) vol kan fietsen. Bij de nieuwe PCI-X standaard hoeft hier voorlopig geen sprake van te zijn, deze kan een dikke 1Gig per sec rondpompen:

Adaptec is also providing ServerWorks with its new dual channel Ultra160 SCSI controller, the AIC-7899W, code-named Crossbow, that incorporates the same signal pin-out as its forthcoming PCI-X-based Ultra320 SCSI controllers. OEMs that incorporate this controller in new server designs will avoid the expensive and time-consuming process of redesigning their boards to accommodate the upcoming next generation PCI-X-based Ultra320 SCSI controllers.

The current PCI bus has enough bandwidth for today's dual channel Ultra160 SCSI controllers. However, the forthcoming dual channel Ultra320 SCSI controller will saturate the PCI bus. PCI-X will be needed for the increased bandwidth requirements, and will double the bus throughput to a full one Gigabyte per second. Adaptec and ServerWorks are working together to ensure that Ultra320 SCSI technology from Adaptec and PCI-X core logic from ServerWorks work seamlessly together.

Een opvolger voor de PCI-X standaard heeft zich inmiddels ook al aangediend: vorige maand maakten Intel & kameraden bekend dat zij de Infiniband specs hebben voltooid. Infiniband trekt maximaal 6GB/s, vergelijkbaar met de Lightning Data Transport bus van AMD.

Een Cheetah X15 haalt ca 40MB/s sustained, dus dan moet je een flinke RAID batterij bouwen om dual Ultra160 vol te krijgen. Het zal ook wel handig zijn voor transfers vanuit cache (een leuke RAID controller heeft 64-128Meg, dus er zal vrij regelmatig van de maximale snelheid gebruik gemaakt kunnen worden).

Ik snap ook niet waarom iedereen s'nachts ligt te maffen .

Juist.. vandaar dus dat er geen dual-channel SCSI160 spullen zijn: een enkel channel fietst al lekker de PCI 32/33 bus vol.

Dat is natuurlijk waar, maar dat geldt voor die ultra320 nog erger..

Totale bandbreedte van 32/33 PCI is 133 MB/sec, dus in principe heeft het dan inderdaad weinig zin om er meer dan een ultra160 kanaal op te zetten, ook al krijg je zo'n kanaal waarschijnlijk niet vol.


Waarschijnlijk doet men dat 's nachts om niet om 15:00 wakker te worden en je ongelofelijk te moeten haasten als je nog een reepje ram wilt halen voor de winkels dicht zijn (dwz, kijken of ze het goedkoper kunnen leveren dan pricewatch + rembours natuurlijk..)

rjeggens: ik zou er niet op wachten dat hij is je desktop zit, want warschijnlijk zal niet nooit gebeuren, serverworks is een bedrijf voor ....... en heb jij enig idee wat een raid scsi kaartje kost? toch wel gauw in de buurt van de 10.000 piek!
