Quantum seems to have done their homework on this drive, as it provides some great performance for real-world applications, which is the thing that truly matters most. With other drives out there barking for your hard-earned dollar, you’ll be hard pressed to find a drive that will deliver better bang for the buck. The only argument we could think of as to why someone wouldn’t want to invest into a drive like this is that for the same price you could score on an IDE drive with 4 times the amount of storage.
As with most SCSI drives, it typically comes down to that argument. To make a simple analogy, you could get 2-3 pickup trucks for the same price of a Range Rover, and of course they’d have more storage capacity. But you have to ask yourself what’s more important, huge storage or performance?
With a going price of around $299.00, the Atlas 10K does prove to be an excellent price/performance leader. There are few reasons we could think of to not buy this drive if you’re in the market for a drive that should provide you with many years of excellent service.Pluses:
+ Excellent Real-World Performance
+ Good price for a drive in its class
+ Good pricepoint at $299.00
Minuses:
- Slower maximum data throughput than competing drives
