HP, Intel, IBM en NEC hebben een gezamenlijk non-profit project aangekondigd waarmee zij de ontwikkeling van Linux voor high-end enterprise hardware hopen te bevorderen. Hiertoe wordt onder de naam 'Open Source Development Lab' een proeftuin met lekkere waren samengesteld. Tot op heden was toegang tot high-end server systemen vanwege een chronisch gebrek aan financiële middelen een groot probleem voor open source developers. Dankzij het OSD Lab kunnen OSS developers zich binnenkort in volle blijheid uitleven op dergelijke peperdure stijve plasser hardware:

Hewlett-Packard, Intel Corporation, IBM and NEC Corporation today announced the Open Source Development Lab, the industry's first independent, non-profit lab for developers who are adding enterprise capabilities to Linux(1). The four companies plan to provide significant equipment and funding to the lab over the next several years. Additional contributors and sponsors of the lab include Caldera, Dell, Linuxcare, LynuxWorks, Red Hat, SGI, SuSE, TurboLinux and VA Linux.

The lab, currently under formation, will provide open source developers with a centralized enterprise development environment for sharing development ideas and innovations. The lab will be based near Portland, Ore. It is expected to open at the end of the year.

``The Open Source Development Lab will help fulfill a need that individual Linux and open source developers often have -- access to high-end enterprise hardware,'' said Brian Behlendorf, chief technical officer of CollabNet and co-founder of Apache. ``It's great that these companies are coming together to help accelerate development for this environment.''

``Open Source Development Lab will demonstrate the power of collaborative development and cooperation with the Open Source community, solving critical business problems in the internetworked economy,'' said Eric Raymond, author of ``The Cathedral and the Bazaar'' and Co-Founder of the Open Source Initiative.

Supporting the Open Source Development Model The lab will support existing industry projects that use open source licenses and are established according to today's open source development model. The lab will not create new projects; instead, it will help accelerate existing or new projects developed by the open source community. The initial lab projects will be announced later in the year after an open, neutral process for choosing projects is coordinated with the open source community. Initial projects are expected to range from tools development to kernel projects that advance the enterprise capabilities of Linux. Independent Board to Govern Lab

The lab will be governed by an independent board and management structure, and will consist of members from the open source community as well as representatives of sponsor companies. An independent executive director employed by the lab will implement policy, make funding decisions and work with the open source community to select projects.

Rambus Inc. heeft zijn juristenleger de komende tijd van voldoende werk verzekerd nu ook Hyundai, de op één na grootste geheugenfabrikant ter wereld, een aanklacht tegen het bedrijf heeft ingediend. Hyundai heeft geen trek in het betalen van SDRAM royalties aan Rambus en is evenals Infineon en Micron van mening dat de SDRAM patenten van Rambus Inc. niet geldig zijn:

Hyundai alleges that certain Rambus patents are invalid and unenforceable, according to a suit filed yesterday in U.S District Court in San Jose, Calif.

Hyundai's action comes a day after Micron Technology, the No. 3 memory-chip maker, sued Rambus for violation of antitrust laws.

Both companies are trying to challenge Rambus' attempt to enforce patents providing wide-ranging royalties from the memory chip industry, estimated to be worth $30 billion in revenue this year.

Hyundai said it filed the suit "in response to an assertion of infringement by Rambus and a demand that Hyundai accept and pay royalties under the Rambus patents."

Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een review klaarliggen van de grootste mechanische harde schijf van dit moment, de Maxtor Diamondmax 80 - 80GB. De schijf draait zijn rondjes met 5400 rpm, maar blijkt toch boven gemiddeld te presteren in de snelheidstests. Het blijft wel zo dat niet iedereen een 80GB harde schijf nodig heeft, maar er zijn genoeg doeleinden voor te bedenken:

Het ding draagt een vrij zwaar prijskaartje van $90 dollar met zich mee maar wist wel uitermate goed te presteren, zelfs ten op zichte van de Alpha PAL 6035. Er werd getest met een P3-933Mhz en een verse 1,1GHz Athlon, de resulaten vind je hier terug in de review.

Grafische chipbakker 3dfx heeft over het tweede financiële kwartaal van 2000 een netto verlies geboekt van ruim 100 miljoen dollar. Dit werd mede veroorzaak door de overname van GigaPixel eerder dit jaar. 3dfx laat de moet echter niet zakken; vanwege de sterke positie in de retail markt en de populairiteit onder de grote OEM leveranciers wordt er nog vol goede hoop naar de toekomst gekeken. The company reported that its gross profit was $10.2 million during the quarter. With $19.2 million in R&D expenses and $16.5 million in SG&A expenses, the company reported an operating loss before goodwill amortization of ($25.5 million). Also included in the company's second quarter results was a one-time charge for in-process R&D in the amount of $66.2 million in connection with the acquisition of GigaPixel, which was completed during the quarter. This resulted in a net loss of ($100.5 million), or ($3.81) per share. This compares to a net loss of ($11.6 million) or ($0.50) per share for the quarter ended July 31, 1999. Weighted average shares were 26,350,000 and 23,296,000 for the quarters ended July 31, 2000 and 1999, respectively.

The Register meldt in dit artikel dat PC boeren kennelijk grote problemen hebben met het leveren van high-end processors zoals de 1GHz Athlon en Pentium III. Zo zou ons kleine kikkerlandje flinke problemen hebben met het leveren van 1GHz Athlons:

But it seems that it's not only Intel which is finding it difficult to supply high end processors. According to system integrators in the Netherlands, it is hard to find clock high speeds for Thunderbirds too.

One source said: "At www.norrod.nl it seems that the highest clocked AMD Thunderbird available is 900MHz and for Intel it would be 866MHz. AMD should wait until October with their 1.2GHz launch until they can produce enough 1GHz/1.1GHz parts. The same story for Intel here."

This situation may be peculiar to The Netherlands only. One reader said: "The fastest AMD procesor you can buy (stand alone) in the Netherlands is the Thunderbird 950Mhz. I found it here. A 1GHz is indeed harder to find, but then again we're used to get the best things when the rest of the world already has it."

Another Dutch reader commented: "I'd like to point out in reference to your article that unavailability of GHz Athlons in The Netherlands is in no way an indication of delivery problems with that part. As a long time inhabitant of The Netherlands, I can attest to the fact that all high end hardware devices take absolutely forever to filter their way down into the Dutch channel. This has always been the case, and we're used to it by now. We expect the GHz Athlons to become available before the end of the decade, and at a price point that would put Intel's overpriced bits to shame. Like I said, we're used to it."

Not like Akihabara in Japan, then, nor like Finland, Sweden or Germany, where readers report there are plenteous quantities of 1GHz Athlons. [break]Zoals je hierboven kunt lezen schijnt de rest van Europa niets van 1GHz Athlons tekorten af te weten.

De 1GHz Pentium III is echter een ander verhaal. Vanwege grote hitteproblemen met de huidige versie wordt er nu een nieuwe stepping C gemaakt om dit weer te fixen. Het gevolg is dat de levering van de PIII-1GHz al weken plat ligt:[/break] According to the PC vendors, there has been no production delivery of Pentium III 1GHz flip chips for around three weeks.

The current stepping of the Pentium III 1GHz is B1, but Intel engineers have told their PC vendors that stepping C would eliminate heat problems they have encountered with the microprocessor.

This news also throws light on the 1GHz situation in the distributor-dealer channel. Although 1GHz FC-PGA microprocessors are listed, dealers are unable to obtain the part.

AMD en Fujitsu, strategische partners op het gebied van flashgeheugen, hebben gisteren 32-bit flashgeheugen geintroduceerd. Zij zijn hiermee de eersten die flashgeheugen met 32-bit dataoverdrachtssnelheid produceren. Flashtechniek wordt onder anderen gebruikt bij digitale camera's en mp3-spelers, maar ook in apparaten als laserprinters, autonavigatiesystemen en mobiele telefoons. Het was wel nodig dat er weer eens sneller flashgeheugen kwam, omdat de rest van de techniek ook niet stilstaat:

Op 13 september zal Apple de betaversie van Mac OS X uitbrengen. De betaversie was eerder voor deze zomer aangekondigd. Steve Jobs moest toch nog even zijn gelijk halen door te melden dat de officiële zomer pas 23 september afloopt. Volgens Jobs is het nieuwe OS X gebruikersvriendelijk en snel. De betaversie zal ook SMP en Java2 volledig ondersteunen.

Apple brengt op 13 september de betaversie van Mac OS X uit, de nieuwste versie van haar besturingssysteem. Dat heeft CEO Steve Jobs van het concern dinsdag tijdens de Seybold Web Publishing-conferentie bekendgemaakt. Apple had eerder aangekondigd dat het besturingssysteem deze zomer uitgebracht zou worden.

OS X zal bestaan uit verschillende lagen, waarbij Darwin de kernel van het systeem vormt. Darwin is volgens Jobs volledig open-source. Bovenop de kernel komen drie lagen: Quartz 2-D graphics, OpenGL voor driedimensionale graphics en Quicktime voor multimedia.

Gebruiksgemak is het bestaansrecht van het nieuwe systeem, aldus Jobs. Zo zal OS X een nieuwe zoekfunctie bevatten, na kritiek op de huidige zoekfunctie te hebben gekregen van Apple-gebruikers. De betaversie zal verder volledige ondersteuning bieden voor Java2 en voor SMP, symmetric multiprocessing.

Jobs toonde zich erg trots op de snelheid waarmee PowerBooks nu uit stand-by 'ontwaken'. Nu doen de Apple-notebooks daar nog 8 tot 22 seconden over, maar dankzij OS X wordt dat verkort tot een seconde. Alleen, de demonstratie van die snellere ontwaaktijd ging tot twee keer mis, waarna Jobs het maar voor gezien hield.

Hackers hebben er voor gezorgd dat cafe-brasserie "De Eeuwige Jachtvelden" uit Den Haag een tijd lang zonder bier heeft gezeten. De biervoorraad wordt door middel van een computersysteem bijgehouden en de gegevens worden vervolgens naar de brouwerij gestuurd. De brouwerij kan zodoende bepalen wanneer er weer bier moet worden geleverd. Eigenaar Hans de Bruin had al het vermoeden dat er iets mis was omdat er al 3 dagen geen reserveringen via de website binnen waren gekomen. Toen op de drukke vrijdagavond het witbier plotseling op was nam Hans de Bruin contact op met de internetprovider. Het bleek dat hackers hadden ingebroken op het systeem van de zaak. De Bruin overweegt de internetprovider aansprakelijk te stellen voor de schade.

Een Haagse horeca-ondernemer is tijdens het spitsuur in zijn zaak zonder bier komen te zitten, doordat hackers het computersysteem plat wisten te leggen.

Café brasserie De Eeuwige Jachtvelden aan het Haagse Plein beschikt over een grote hoeveelheid elektronica. Zo bepaalt de brouwerij op afstand wanneer er nieuw bier geleverd moet worden, maken klanten via internet reserveringen en geven de obers de bestellingen via een handcomputertje door aan de keuken.

Eigenaar Hans de Bruijn kreeg het idee dat er iets mis was toen hij drie dagen lang geen enkele reservering via de website binnenkreeg. Normaal gesproken bespreken ruim 100 mensen op deze manier een tafel.

Vrijdagavond, tijdens het drukke borreluur, sloeg echter de vlam in de pan. De Bruijn: "Op een gegeven moment was het witbier op. Dat kan eigenlijk niet, want de brouwer houdt via internet zelf in de gaten of de vaten nog vol zitten."

Uit contact met de internetprovider bleek dat hackers ingebroken hadden in het computersysteem van de zaak. "Hierdoor kon drie dagen lang niet meer via internet gereserveerd worden, maar werd bovendien het voorraadbeheer verstoord. Ook het systeem waarmee de bestellingen aan de keuken doorgeven worden functioneerde niet goed meer", aldus De Bruijn.

De Bruijn kan en wil geen precieze uitspraken doen over de geleden schade, maar meldt wel dat het om "duizenden guldens" gaat. Hij overweegt zijn internetprovider aansprakelijk te stellen voor de schade.

De advocaten van Microsoft zullen de komende tijd nog geen rust krijgen. Ook de Amerikaanse consumenten spannen nu een rechtzaak aan tegen de softwaregigant. De groeperingen vinden dat Microsoft haar machtspostitie misbruikt heeft door te hoge prijzen te vragen. De aanklagers zullen het niet zo makkelijk krijgen in hun missie, aangezien veel rechters geweigerd hebben de aanklachten aan te nemen:

Softwarebedrijf Microsoft wordt serieus bedreigd door schadeclaims van Amerikaanse consumenten. Een rechter in San Francisco heeft dinsdagavond voor het eerst een gezamenlijke aanklacht toegestaan van een groep consumenten. Microsoft wordt beticht van te hoge prijzen voor zijn software.

Consumentengroepen besloten eerder dit jaar massaal 's wereld grootste sofwareproducent aan te klagen nadat rechter Thomas Penfield Jackson had geoordeeld dat Microsoft zijn dominante machtspositie had misbruikt.

Rechters in verscheidene staten hebben tot dusver geweigerd de aanklachten aan te nemen omdat wetgeving dat niet toe zou laten. Een datum voor de rechtszaak is nog niet vastgesteld.

De rechtzaak omtrent het voortbestaan van Napster wordt in de eerste week van oktober weer voortgezet. Napster is aan zet en mag tussen 2 en 6 oktober goede argumenten geven waarom het bedrijf moet blijven bestaan. Napster wordt gesteund door een aantal grote bedrijven waaronder Intel, AOL en Apple.

A federal appeals court said Tuesday it would hear oral arguments in the Napster Inc. case the first week of October.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it would hear the case sometime between Oct. 2-6 in San Francisco. The 26-judge court provided no other details and, in customary fashion, did not announce the three judges who would sit on the case. Normally, panelists are not announced until the week before.

The court, which in the past year has issued rulings in favor of technology despite concerns of copyright infringement, national security and Internet monopolies, is hearing the recording industry's case against the Internet site that acts as a gateway for millions of online surfers to exchange and record copyrighted music.

The recording industry wants Napster shut down, alleging it is contributing to widespread copyright infringement. Napster, on the other hand, said it is just providing a service for users to share music and not all of the music is copyright protected.

David Gasior, webmaster van Vortex of Sound, laat in een post op zijn forum weten dat het bericht van de Franse site Clubnic.com over een overname van Aureal door Creative Labs onjuist is. Volgens de informatie die David van zijn bronnen heeft gekregen is er nog steeds geen overeenstemming bereikt. Het hoogste bod van Creative zou nu al op 35 miljoen dollar liggen:

As of yesterday, Creative has not bought Aureal. None of the people I have been getting information from have said a deal was final. In fact, one person told me that he heard that Creative made a $35 million offer - but no one else has been able to confirm that yet.

The news at that French site (clubnic.com or whatever) is just a rehash (and a bad one at that) of news that we posted over a week ago. So please don't email me with the link that Creative has bought Aureal or that they're bidding $21 million dollars. We know. We already posted it. Try reading our news before sending it back to us.
