De FBI verdenkt een 23-jarige man uit Californië van betrokkenheid in de Emulex hoax van vorige week. Een vals persbericht dat via Internet Wire werd verspreid, deed de aandelenkoers van het bedrijf afgelopen vrijdag met 50% dalen. De FBI zegt bewijs te hebben dat de verdachte een winst van bijna 250.000 dollar aan de hoax heeft overgehouden:

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles said that he was charged with securities fraud for disseminating a false press release on the data networking equipment maker.

"The defendant allegedly made nearly $250,000 when the price of Emulex's stock nos-dived on Friday," said the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.

A fake Emulex (stock: EMLX) press release was posted last Friday on Internet Wire, an online corporate news dissemination service. The misinformation, which was picked up by news services, sent shares down more than 50 percent, knocking about $2.5 billion off its market capitalization in a matter of hours.After Nasdaq halted trading in the stock, and the company said the information was false, shares recovered nearly all the losses.

Insane Hardware heeft wat info over het nieuwe A7S Socket A plankje van Asus te pakken weten te krijgen. De A7S is gebaseerd op de SiS 730S chipset en is beschikbaar in drie versies met een ATX (A7S) of MicroATX (A7S-M) layout en onboard LAN (A7S-L). Verder weet Insane Hardware al de naam van het Asus Socket A bord met DDR support, deze gaat 'A7V266' heten (de naam doet vermoeden dat dit bord gebaseerd is op de VIA KX266 chipset):

Ars Technica heeft het voorlopig laatste deel van hun DRAM guide online gezet, waarin zij wat dieper in gaan op de voor- en nadelen van Rambus geheugens. De besproken onderwerpen zijn de toenemende latencies bij plaatsing van meerdere RIMMs, het Rambus Signaling Layer, het Rambus packet protocol en de power management maatregelen die zijn genomen om het stroomverbruik en de warmteontwikkeling van de Rambus chippies tot een aanvaardbaar niveau te reduceren. In de conclusie worden DDR SDRAM en RDRAM met elkaar vergeleken:

RAMBUS and DDR DRAM are two, very different next-generation memory technologies. From the ground up, the two technologies have been designed with different, yet somewhat overlapping, goals in mind. While both share the goal of providing a high bandwidth memory solution for next generation media applications, each one brings with it a unique set of advantages and disadvantages that I think this series has laid out in detail.

DDR SDRAM is an evolutionary step forward that greatly increases SDRAM technology's available bandwidth without increasing costs significantly. DDR has near price parity with the current generation of PC133 SDRAM, and it's an open standard that enjoys widespread industry support from memory makers. However, DDR SDRAM has inherited SDRAM's granularity and pin count problems--problems which will only grow worse as transistor counts increase. It's simply unavoidable.

On the other hand, RDRAM's "single chip, low pin count, high capacity, high bandwidth" solution may have sounded great in the early 90's, but the realities of today's memory market are such that nobody really cares about the "single chip, low pin count" part--at least not at this point in time in the mainstream, server, workstation, and desktop markets. And the "single chip, low pin count" part of the equation becomes even less relevant to the mainstream PC user when RAMBUS' steep price premiums are factored in.

Akiba's PC Watch heeft wat foto's gepost van de SiS 730S presentatie in Japan. De 730S is een compacte low-end Socket A chipset met geïntregreerde 128-bit 3D graphics, ethernet, modem, audio en DVD playback. De chipset heeft support voor PC133, ATA100 en AGP4x via een extern slot. Uit het oogpunt van kostenbesparing zijn de north- en southbridge van de 730S samengeprakt in één chip.

Tijdens de SiS presentatie showden onder andere Asus, Gigabyte, GVC en Soyo hun SiS 730S produkten. Veelal zijn dit MicroATX borden, dus volstrekt oninteressant voor ons die-hards. Hieronder een nudie van het weinig opwindende Gigabyte plankje (typenummer onbekend):

AMD hield op de show een presentatie van hun processor roadmap. De Athlon Ultra / Mustang wordt nog steeds halverwege het vierde kwartaal verwacht. Eind dit jaar volgt Palomino (voorheen 'Corvette'), de mobiele versie van de Mustang processor met 256KB L2 cache. Begin 2001 wordt Morgan geïntroduceerd. Johan de Gelas heeft op Ace's Hardware een interessante nieuwsposting geplaatst met wat meer info over de mogelijke bottlenecks van de Pentium 4 architectuur. Zoals je in de benchmarks hebt kunnen zien, heeft de Pentium 4 een erg indrukwekkende geheugen bandbreedte, maar is de integer en FPU performance nog niet op het niveau van de Pentium III en Athlon. Johan heeft een verklaring voor de wat tegenvallende performance van de 'double pumped' ALU (aka 'Rapid Execution Engine'), die integer instructies uitvoert op een dubbele kloksnelheid van de rest van de processor. De P4 blijkt weliswaar erg snel te zijn bij de meest voorkomende simpele instructies, maar heeft als nadeel dat integer instructies met een hogere latency worden verwerkt. Een tweede mogelijke bottleneck zit 'm in de trace cache, die per kloktik 3 microops (gemiddeld 1,5 instructie) naar de pipelines kan sturen. Hierdoor kan het voorkomen dat één van de twee ALU's zonder werk komt te staan:

The P4's double clocked ALU's, alias rapid execution engine. While it is quite fantastic that a 2 GHz P4, which was presented by Albert Yu on the IDF, has a 4 GHz ALU, there is something I should point out. Integer multiplication takes 12 clocks to execute, while this instruction takes only four clocks on the PIII. If you compare the PIII with the P4, the P3 executes the integer instructions with 50% less latency. In other words, the Rapid Execution Engine is only "Rapid" for the most common, most simple instructions (32 bit ADD). Intel's engineers haven taken the words "make the common thing faster" to the extreme...

The trace cache can send only 3 microops to the rest of the pipeline. Is that a bottleneck? I am not sure, but if one x86 instruction takes on average 2 microops, then the pentium 4 can only do a maximum of 1.5 x86 per clockcycle or 1.5 IPC. Now, benchmarks show us that it is hard to obtain higher IPC than 1-1.1, but it seems to me that you should have a bit more headroom. Especially when the CPU encounters a piece of code that has a high amount of ILP (Instruction Level Parrallelism). The Pentium 4 is a very interesting architecture, and the more we delve into it, the harder it gets to understand how it will perform in different applications and what trade-offs the engineers made.

Op deze manier wil de muzieksite artiesten gaan promoten:

Online muzieksite MP3.com gaat starten met het promoten van artiesten per e-mail. Volgens persbureau Reuters wordt de muziek van de betreffende artiest dan per e-mail verzonden naar de MP3.com-'leden'.

De groep MP3.com-luisteraars die de mail ontvangt, wordt geselecteerd op basis van woonplaats en persoonlijke kenmerken. In de e-mail wordt een MP3-versie van een liedje verstuurd, samen met enkele links naar andere artiesten of sites van platenmaatschappijen. Ook zal een link worden toegevoegd waar de ontvanger de cd kan bestellen.

Het setje kost 35 dollar en is compleet met handige vakjes voor je muis, keyboard en kabels :

While the GearGrip Pro holds the comp nice and tight there is still a gap when you lift the computer. No matter how tight I clinch the straps, the gap was always there.

The gap really isn't a problem. I try shaking the computer back and forth to try to make it slip out, and it didn't move one inch. I like the option of either using the handle or the strap to carry the case.

Using the GearGrip Pro, I was able to carry everything I normally take to a LAN party with it. The GearGrip Pro held the computer. The pouches held my keyboard, mouse and mouse pad. The cable grip held my LAN cable and head phones. The only thing the GearGrip Pro can't carry is your monitor.

Future version of the MSN client, he told the WSJ (which seems not to have grasped the import of the blurt) will include a word processor.

We've moved on quite a bit from the point earlier this year when MSN execs were - hoplessly implausibly - telling people they didn't yet know how MSN fitted into the .NET strategy. Belluzo is now saying that MSN illustrates the principles of .NET, and that it's moving towards "delivering a near-complete computing experience" (the WSJ's phrasing). It's in that context that the lack of a word processor, and the consequent need to add one, arises.

The need for a word processor, and a few other bits and pieces of client application software, is of course apparent when you think about the direction MSN is going in. Microsoft devices like the Web Companion, which is now being built by Compaq, are intended to make Internet access a simple and enjoyable experience (hey, don't shout at us, we're only reporting), so they're going to have to do all of the simple, Webby, emaily and writey things that the target newbie/dummy market wants to do, easily, from one place.

Billy "Wicked" Wilson van Voodoo Extreme heeft van 3dfx's Senior PR Manager vernomen dat de Voodoo5 6000 niet meer deze zomer zal verschijnen maar is gedelayed tot de herfst. De afstand ten opzichte van nVidia begint nu wel aardig op te lopen aangezien nVidia alweer de GeForce2 Ultra heeft uitgepoept. Een flinke domper voor de 3dfx tribune:

Over privacy-schending gesproken! Een ambtenaar van de gemeente Delft had per ongeluk de webcams in de trouwzaal een maand lang aan laten staan, nadat deze toen live een bruiloft via internet hadden uitgezonden. Hierdoor waren ook alle 40 huwelijken op het net te bekijken, die daarna plaats vonden in de zaal. Of de betreffende mensen hier een probleem van gaan maken, is nog niet bekend:

Door een fout van de gemeente zijn twee webcams in de trouwzaal een maand lang blijven aanstaan. De verantwoordelijke ambtenaar ontdekte de fout eerder deze week, toen hij terugkwam van vakantie. Tot zijn schrik kwam hij er achter dat de webcams na de eerste live huwelijksvoltrekking, eind juli, niet waren uitgezet. De huwelijksvoltrekkingen van de veertig bruidsparen die daarna kwamen, waren hierdoor ook live te volgen via de website van de gemeente.

De webcams zijn bedoeld als extra service voor bruidsparen, zodat familieleden en vrienden die niet bij de huwelijksvoltrekking aanwezig kunnen zijn, deze toch overal ter wereld via internet kunnen volgen.

Hardware distributeur Actebis waarschuwt voor een stijging van de videokaart-prijzen. De prijsverhoging is het gevolg van de sterke stijging van de geheugenprijzen. ATi heeft inmiddels de prijzen bijgesteld en het is de verwachting dat anderen binnenkort volgen:

Van onze leveranciers hebben wij te horen gekregen dat de prijzen van VGA kaarten op korte termijn omhoog gaan. Dit vanwege stijgende prijzen voor het geheugen dat op de kaarten geplaatst wordt.

De eerste prijsstijgingen zijn reeds een feit, want leverancier ATI heeft de prijzen met ongeveer 15% verhoogd! Het is de verwachting dat andere leveranciers op korte termijn volgen.

Door probs in de zachtwaar van KPN (sorry, kan 't niet laten ) kan een groot deel van de internetters bij regelmaat niet inbellen. Tijdens het bouwen van de verbinding krijgt de gebruiker een volstrekt onterechte 'wachtwoord onjuist' melding voor zijn of haar neus, waarna de verbinding wordt afgeschoten. Het bestaan van dit probleem werd al in april geconstateerd, maar tot op heden heeft KPN niet de motivatie op willen brengen om de zaak te fixen. Het is daarom de verwachting dat de problemen in de komende weken weer de kop op zullen steken nu Nederland van vakantie is wedergekeerd:

De foutmelding wordt veroorzaakt door een fout in de software in het inbelnetwerk van KPN. De fout treedt op als het zeer druk is, vaak 's avonds na acht uur. Omdat de fout al optreedt in het net van KPN, komt hij voor bij meerdere isp's, waaronder WorldOnline en Planet Internet. Zij hebben het inbelnetwerk, inclusief de wachtwoordcontrole, uitbesteed aan KPN. En omdat de isp's het inbelnetwerk met elkaar delen, hebben de klanten van alle isp's die het inbelnet van KPN gebruiken last van elkaar. Klanten van WorldOnline kunnen dan ook inbelproblemen hebben door drukte bij Planet Internet, en andersom. KPN maakte dit probleem al wereldkundig in april, maar zei toen het binnen enkele dagen op te lossen. Volgens Van der Lans, van Planet Internet, waren er in de afgelopen week op twee avonden inbelproblemen.

Buzzz kreeg van Simon Paulter, de leider van het Philips Expanium project, te horen dat de Expanium vanaf oktober in Europa verkrijgbaar zal zijn. Bij navraag aan de support lijn van Philips NL wist men mij te vertellen dat de Expanium MP3-CD speler eind september (reken dus op oktober) in Nederland leverbaar wordt. De richtprijs is voorlopig gesteld op 695,- gulden, maar deze prijs is nog niet vastgespijkerd.

Waar software is, zijn virussen. Het Finse internetbedrijf Web2Wap AS heeft ontdekt je door een bepaald SMS-bericht te versturen een Nokia-telefoon kan laten vastlopen. Hoe dit precies in z'n werk gaat wordt niet vermeld, maar er bestaat nu natuurlijk een grote kans dat deze informatie misbruikt zal worden door hackers over de hele wereld. De telefoon gaat echter niet helemaal kapot. Als de batterijen uit de handset gehaald worden en opnieuw worden ingeplugd, werkt het apparaat weer. Dit zou trouwens niet het eerste mobiele virus zijn. Al eerder bestond het VBS/Timofonica-virus, zo meldt F-Secure:

A Norwegian mobile Internet company asserted today that some Nokia mobile phones may freeze temporarily if certain text messages are sent to them. The claim is the latest indication that mobile devices may face some of the same virus threats that have plagued PCs in recent years.

Bjorn Viksund, Web2Wap's managing director in Norway, said that during testing of its mobile Internet products, the company's technicians had discovered that certain text messages coded in a specific way and sent to some Nokia phones caused them to freeze temporarily. But he added that to start up the phone again one had to take the battery out of the handset and reconnect it.

Finnish security software group F-Secure said mobile viruses had popped up in the past, such as the VBS/Timofonica worm in June that was activated by sending SMS messages to random mobile phones. "The information we have about this Nokia story is very sketchy," said Mikko Hypponen, manager of anti-virus research at F-Secure. "It may be similar to the June virus."

WinInformant schrijft dat Microsoft nu voor het eerst officieel details van de nieuwe Office-suite uit de doeken heeft gedaan. Het nieuwe programma zal overigens waarschijnlijk Office 2001 gaan heten, en zal een hoop nieuwe features hebben. Zo zullen de "Smart Tags" als een soort hyperlink de verschillende Office-applicaties met elkaar verbinden, en zal de eerder genoemde spraakherkenning toegevoegd worden:

This week, Microsoft lifted the veil on its upcoming release of Office for Windows (currently known as Office 10) and--for the first time--revealed details about the suite. According to Microsoft, Office 10, which will likely be called Office 2001 when it ships next spring, is a major release. The software will begin delivering on the company's Office.NET vision by integrating Web services and new and improved features that will increase productivity by providing a cleaner, simpler interface and better control.

Office 10 will include a .NET feature called Smart Tags that provides HTML-like hyperlinks that interoperate across Office applications. Heise Online bericht dat Elsa stopt met de ontwikkeling van eigen hardware designs voor voor zijn professionele high-end videokaarten. In de toekomst zal Elsa zich uitsluitend laten baseren op de reference designs van nVidia, zoals dat ook al bij de consumer kaarten van Elsa het geval is. Door de tijd die Elsa verloor met het ontwikkelen van eigen designs was het bedrijf altijd vrij laat op de markt met nieuwe videokaarten, waardoor omzet werd misgelopen en Elsa in de rode cijfers terecht kwam. Inmiddels is Elsa een strategisch samenwerkingsverband met nVidia aangegaan, wat hun het exclusieve recht geeft om Quadro videokaarten te produceren:

Durch die Entwicklung eigener Designs habe man den optimalen Zeitpunkt für die Markteinführung zu oft verpasst und ist in diesem Geschäftsfeld immer tiefer in die roten Zahlen gerutscht. Jasin Robertson van Ace's Hardware heeft een artikeltje gepost over het tweaken van de K6-2+ processor. Hoewel de K6-2+ eigenlijk is bedoeld voor de notebook markt, zijn er toch enkele plaatsen waar de processor los verkrijgbaar is. Dit is interessant voor gebruikers van een bejaarde socket 7 plank, want voor hen kan de K6-2+ een simpele en vooral goedkope upgrade zijn. Na wat optimalisaties (nodig op fossiele borden die de K6-2+ niet kennen) en een beetje overklokken (K6-2+ probleemloos op 600MHz) blijkt dat K6-2+ met een moderne videokaart nog best wel redelijke framerates neer te zetten:

I will keep this part short and sweet. The K6-2+ is the most overclockable SS7 CPU to date, which doesn't say a lot. I tested five chips and, with the aid of an Alpha Cooler, I was only able to reach 617 MHz with complete stability. The funny thing is, I can reach the same 617 MHz with an ordinary Pentium heatsink/fan and the CPU temperature never rose above 32C at any time. The K6-2+ is rated at 80C, so I doubt that heat is going to be a limiting factor on this chip. Once again the full speed L2 cache is the problem here. Here is a list of recommended clock speed combinations. Also there is absolutely no reason for any K6-2+/500 to reach less 600 Mhz.

[...] The K6-2+ is a relatively powerful CPU if optimized properly. And when combined with one of today’s top video cards it makes for a very respectable gaming machine. If you are on a budget and currently own a socket-7 or SS7 system then you can't go wrong with a K6-2+.

The Register meldt dat Motorola is begonnen met het samplen van de PowerPC G4e. Volgens meldingen van MacOS Rumors is Motorola er inmiddels in geslaagd om chips te produceren die snelheden van een gigahertz halen. De yields zijn echter nog erg laag en het is daarom niet te verwachten dat we de processors binnen afzienbare tijd in nieuwe Apple systemen zien belanden.

De G4e is een belangrijke facelift van de huidige G4 core, die zoals bekend zeer slecht scaled naar hogere kloksnelheden. De slechte schaalbaarheid en de vreemde produktiemethoden van Motorola hebben tot gevolg dat er momenteel nauwelijks G4's boven 500MHz worden geproduceerd (IBM slaagt daar - tot irritatie van Motorola - echter wel in). De G4e onderscheidt zich van de G4 door een langere pipeline, die de processor beter geschikt maakt voor hogere kloksnelheden, en meer execution units, die nodig zijn om het verlies van snelheid door de langere pipeline op te vangen. Verder wordt de L2 cache geïntegreerd in de die, zoals dat ook al bij de Coppermine, Thunderbird en Duron het geval is. In oktober zal Motorola op het Microprocessor Forum waarschijnlijk meer details over de G4e bekend maken:

According to a "trusted" Motorola source, cited by MacOS Rumors, the company's test runs are producing chips that run over 500MHz, with some even reaching 1050MHz, breaking the gigahertz barrier. Motorola's goal with the G4 Plus is to get the PowerPC 74xx chip to 700MHz and beyond, or so the company said at last autumn's Microprocessor Forum, at which the new chip was unveiled.

[...] Motorola's main problem at the moment appears to be yield. According to the source, fewer than ten per cent of the chips produced on each silicon wafer operate at 500MHz or above. That sounds bad, but now Motorola has got the chip working, it can focus on improving its production. Besides, it's a given in the semiconductor industry that chips - particularly new, built-from-the-ground-up microprocessors, begin their lives with very low yields.

Adaptec heeft aangekondigd dat zij zijn begonnen met de levering van de nieuwe AIC-7899W Crossbow Ultra160 SCSI ASIC. De AIC-7899W is pin-compatible met de toekomstige PCI-X Ultra320 SCSI chip van Adaptec en is al voorbereid op de hogere signaal vereisten van de Ultra320 standaard. Moederbord en RAID-controller fabrikanten die nu de AIC-7899W gebruiken, kunnen hun produkten in de toekomst geschikt maken voor Ultra320 SCSI en PCI-X door simpelweg de SCSI chip te vervangen met de nieuwe Ultra320 chip:

Ultra320 SCSI is the next generation of SCSI, the I/O protocol standard for mainstream direct attached storage requirements. Ultra320 SCSI, due out next year, will transfer data at the rate of 320 MB/sec per channel or 640 MB/sec with dual-channel SCSI controllers. This performance is twice the speed of the current SCSI standard. By offering its Crossbow ASIC now, Adaptec is helping to ensure that OEMs are able to migrate seamlessly to Ultra320 SCSI technology when it becomes available in early 2001.
