Bij SysReview heeft men een preview gemaakt van SiS' Socket A chipset die binnenkort op de markt moet komen, de 730s. Deze chipset is bedoeld als een goedkope oplossing voor moederbordmakers en moet de prijs van moederborden voor AMD processoren een beetje omlaag krijgen. Verwacht dan ook niet borden in de trant van de Abit KT7-RAID gebaseerd op deze chipset. SiS wil de concurrentie aangaan met VIA's KM133 chipset, een versie van de KT133 met geïntegreerde videokaart.
Interessante features op deze chipset zijn de ondersteuning van 266MHz FSB processoren en een snel IDE-subsysteem: er gaat een dedicated kanaal met een bandbreedte van 133MB/s naar de IDE bus, waardoor dit voor de snelheid van harde schijven geen bottleneck meer vormt. De geïntegreerde videochipset gebruikt een deel van het normale RAM-geheugen als videogeheugen, wat nogal slechte resultaten in 3D-applicaties teweeg brengt. Er is wel een AGP slot aanwezig op het moederbord voor eventuele uitbreiding, maar dat bleek nog niet goed te werken. In de conclusie wordt toch nog redelijk positief over deze chipset gesproken; het preview-exemplaar was extreem stabiel, en de lage prijs moet een hoop goedmaken.
Recently AMD said that their Duron line was being held back by a lack of integrated chipsets. SiS has stepped up and provided a stable and fast platform to fill this hole in AMD's lineup. Once the 730S is released, the Duron should be able to penetrate the low end much more effectively and hopefully displace the Celeron as the primary chip in value systems, as the Duron is by far the better CPU.
The stability of the system was perhaps the most impressive feature of the motherboard as it was very hard to crash this system, even after a night of looping demos. The biggest disappointment of the system was definitely the lacklustre 3D performance. 3fps in Unreal Tournament does not cut it as a gaming machine. I would hope a user would not even consider using the motherboard's onboard video for gaming.
The chipset is not without problems though, as both the sound and AGP slot did not function correctly in this sample. In the final product these problems should be fixed and make this the integrated solution to beat. Overall I would say this motherboard would be an excellent choice for an office PC or a home PC that does not demand 3D performance.
