nVidia GeForce2 Ultra reviews & Detonator 3 reports

Het NDA is een half uurtje geleden gevallen en daarom mogen we ons verheugen op een flinke lading reviews van nVidia's snelste 3D kaart: de GeForce2 Ultra.

Anandtech heeft zoals gebruikelijk een lap tekst van een hoge kwaliteit geschreven waarin alle voor- en nadelen van de GeForce2 Ultra aan bod komen. Het grootste nadeel is uiteraard de prijs, veroorzaakt doordat er gebruikt wordt gemaakt van 4ns DDR RAM wat redelijk zeldzaam en kostbaar is. Het grote voordeel is zonder twijfel de snelheid: 1600x1200x32 met 60 FPS is erg relaxed:

At a $500 price point the GeForce2 Ultra most likely won't see the same popularity that even the $300 GeForce2 GTS and the $400 64MB GeForce2 GTS cards saw since their release. The price of the Ultra is heavily dependent on the availability of its ultra-fast 4ns DDR SDRAM, and there is no sign of that cost dropping anytime soon. It will be interesting to see how much Ultra cards drop in price over the next couple of months if any at all.

Performance-wise, you can't argue that the GeForce2 Ultra is the fastest thing to hit the streets thus far. We're not arguing with the performance of the card at all, but for most users, we can't recommend spending $500 on a card that will most likely be outperformed by a sub $300 card in a couple of months. Ook Tom is erg onder de indruk van de snelheid, maar vind ook heel toevallig dat de prijs aardig pittig is:[/break]NVIDIA has managed it once more to leapfrog 3dfx. If you look at the results you will notice that GeForce 2 Ultra scores more than double the frame rates of a Voodoo5 5500 at high resolutions. Voodoo5 6000 will hardly score more than double of the 5500, due to its design. Therefore it is most likely that NVIDIA will actually keep the 3D performance crown even by the time that 3dfx finally releases the 6000. This is bad news for 3dfx, since their part will most likely be more expensive than the already luxury GeForce 2 Ultra as well.

Leuk kaartje maar dit is niet bepaald bevorderlijk voor de concurrentie die toch al steeds minder wordt voor Nvidia.
Daardoor zal deze kaart ook echt niet vlug zakken in prijs behalve als ze natuurlijk weer een nieuwe chip releasen.
Als dit zo doorgaat is Nvidia monopolist binnen 2 jaar.
Je kunt dan wel zeggen van ikke wil performance enzo maar concurrentie MOET er gewoon blijven anders is het gebeurt met de innovatie.

NVIDIA's biggest fear should be ATI at this point. ATI's Radeon is already dangerously close in performance to the GeForce2 GTS. And provided that ATI can produce a Radeon MAXX in time, it will definitely give the GeForce2 Ultra a run for its money and speaking of which, it most definitely won't debut at $500.

While the delay of the NV20 isn't great enough to completely through NVIDIA off course, they need to make sure that when NV20 does come along that it is powerful enough and attractive enough to shadow the competition once again. If not, then NVIDIA might be facing much bigger problems. For now, this is 3dfx's, ATI's and Matrox's chance to step forward and restore some competition to this industry.

To the big three out there, this is your chance, don't screw it up.

Deze markt is uiterst lucratief en je moet niet vergeten dat 3dfx ooit de status had die nvidia nu heeft..
Ook zijn er in deze markt concurrenten, als nvidia dus niet meer innoveert (zoals MS nu) dan staan er altijd concurrenten klaar om ze te grazen nemen, dus zelfs als ze aan de top staan zullen ze de hete adem van de concurrentie in hun nek voelen, omdat ze geen mogelijkheden hebben de concurrentie te vernietigen en de markt dicht te houden (een andere markt dan bij OS-en)
Ze zullen dus nooit monopolist worden.

Voor de tweakers onder ons zijn de gegevens over de overklokbaarheid van dit ding misschien interessanter: 'Ome Tom' heeft zijn sample aan het draaien gehad op 285 Mhz core/500 Mhz memory, tegen normaal 250/460.

Hij had daar wel de opmerking bij dat zijn kaart 4ns-geheugen had, en dat er misschien vanwege leveringsproblemen 4.4ns-geheugen op sommige kaarten zou komen, vandaar de lage kloksnelheid die nVidia hanteert.

Wel erg leuk hoor die Detonator 6.16 drivers reviews.

Maar het is alleen jammer dat er te weinig aandacht aan UT performance word besteed.

Alleen jammer dat TNT2 bezitters er qua performance niet op vooruit gaan.

Maar goed het kan ook niet altijd feest zijn.

While we're not too happy that NVIDIA's NV20 won't be coming out until next Spring, the release of the Detonator3 drivers have lessened the blow.

GeForce2 GTS owners should be happy with the new drivers because the card now outperforms the Radeon in almost all situations, even with the Radeon's updated drivers.

GeForce SDR owners should be extremely pleased with the Detonator3 drivers as their extremely memory bandwidth crippled cards that once cost $300 now get a healthy boost in frame rate just by installing some new drivers. Those of you that were lucky enough to hold off until DDR GeForce cards became available get a performance boost as well, and there should be no complaining from that end either.

Even the low-cost GeForce2 MX enjoys a healthy increase in performance since it is also very memory bandwidth limited.

The only users that aren't effected in a positive manner are the TNT/TNT2/TNT2 Ultra owners, sorry guys, but you're out of luck this time around. For everyone else, enjoy the free performance boost.

Lijkt me een hele vette kaart, maar het nadeel is dat de release te dicht bij de datum van de GF3 ligt. Als je nou even 3 a 4 maanden wacht, dan heb je een kaart met waarschijnlijk veel betere performance (mayb zelfs betere FSAA )

Zijn er al specs over de GF3??

Dit is toch niet normaal meer. +- 1250 piek voor een videokaart dit is gewoon te ziek voor woorden. Ik denk ook niet dat veel mensen deze videokaart zullen kopen ook omdat de prijs toch al niet snel zal gaan zakken vanwege de slechte geheugenmarkt. Het is al moeilijk om geheugen te krijgen laat staan 4ns geheugen.

Ik denk zelfs dat de Geforce 2 niet eens veel zal zakken in prijs hierdoor.
