Dat van het bestaande internetprotocol IPv4 binnen niet al te lange tijd een update zou komen, is al langer bekend. Hiermee zullen er veel meer IP-adres beschikbaar zijn en ook voor betere beveiliging is gezorgd. Nu meldt PR NewsWire dat men in Japan het nieuwe protocol (IPv6) al aan het testen is. Het systeem draait al en zal nog tot maart 2001 in de testfase blijven:

Internet Initiative Japan Inc. today launched its IPv6 Native Service using dedicated access lines. The new service marks Japan's first IPv6(Internet Protocol version 6) service on a "native" format. Subsequent to a free trial service period through to March 31, 2001, the service will be formally launched on a charge basis as of April 2001. The initial service area is Tokyo and will be widened progressively.

IPv6 technology overcomes IPv4(the protocol currently in use) problems such as limited IP address availability, promising to expand the possibilities of the Internet still further. Looking ahead to the growth of cell phone Internet access and the introduction of home networks for household electronics, IIJ became the first commercial ISP in Japan to offer IPv6 service through tunneling technology in August 1999, and has successfully established operating expertise by seizing the international initiative in IPv6 development and commercialization. The introduction of the native type IPv6 service will boost IIJ's R&D capabilities still further, and open the door to new Internet worlds.

De aanloopproblemen met de invoering van ADSL bij KPN zijn grotendeels opgelost, meldt XS4All in een persbericht. Eind juni werd er door XS4All nog hevig geflamed op moederbedrijf KPN, omdat KPN niet voldoende zou zijn voorbereid op de introductie van ADSL. XS4All dreigde toen het hele ADSL-plan te dumpen.

Inmiddels is ADSL beschikbaar in enkele gebieden buiten de steden Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Utrecht ADSL. Tot het eind van dit jaar wil KPN nog 40 nummer- centrales geschikt maken voor ADSL. Uitverkorenen die in een ADSL-enabled gebied leven, kunnen vanaf vandaag een ADSL knutselpakket aanschaffen waarmee zij zelf een aansluiting kunnen neerleggen:

Nu juicht XS4ALL weer. ADSL is beschikbaar geworden in gebieden buiten de steden Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Utrecht, aldus de internetaanbieder. Tot het einde van het jaar maakt KPN binnen de Randstad nog eens 40 nummercentrales geschikt voor ADSL. Vanaf de tweede helft van oktober kunnen ook ISDN-gebruikers een ADSL-aansluiting krijgen.

Vanaf 1 september is ook het Doe Het Zelf pakket beschikbaar. Zelf installeren kan voor de helft van de prijs van een KPN-monteur. Het goedkoopste DHZ-pakket kost 162,50 gulden. Tot eind dit jaar hanteert KPN halve prijzen voor een ADSL-aansluiting. Installatie door een monteur kost 325 gulden in plaats van 650 gulden.

Kodak heeft een aantal nieuwe CCD's aangekondigd. Voor de digitale fotocamera zijn er twee nieuwe CCD's. Eéntje van 5,1Megapixels, maar ook eentje van 16,6Megapixels. De CCD vormt het hart van elke digitale Camera. Het wordt natuurlijk steeds interessanter omdat de kwaliteit van de foto's ook telkens beter wordt. Met de 16,6 Megapixel CCD is de kwaliteit beter dan met een APS camera en ook de kwaliteit van een 35mm filmpje komt zo in het gedrang:

Two new CCDs for digital cameras: the KAF-5100CE, a 5.1 million pixel device designed for digital cameras used by professionals and advanced amateurs, and the KAF-16801, a 16.6 million pixel device targeted at developers of studio cameras. Both devices use the company's patented Blue Plus Color process, which significantly enhances photo-responsivity and makes them ideal for performance imaging applications where superior image quality is required.

De 16,6 Megapixel CCD is dus voornamelijk bedoeld voor "developers of studiocamera's". Hierdoor is de kans erg klein dat we binnen korte tijd een camera op de markt zullen zien die ook daadwerkelijk met deze CCD uitgerust zal zijn. De 5.1Megapixel echter wel, niet zeer binnenkort weliswaar, maar toch is op middellange termijn een camera die 5.1Megapixel aankan wel te verwachten. De prijs zullen we maar niet over beginnen dan.

Ik lees bij The Register dat er weer nieuwe Pentium 4 benchmarks cybperspace ingeslingerd zijn, ditmaal afkomstig van deze Japanse site. De Pentium 4 1.4GHz wordt er o.a. vergeleken met 1GHz P3's en Athlons in een gogo235 benchmark, schijnbaar een encoder om snel MP3's mee te rippen. De winst die de Pentium 4 had ten opzichte van de twee 1GHz processors was ongeveer 17 procent:

Intel may have browbeaten 2CPU into submission (see Intel Pentium 4 benchmarks stalinised), but as we said earlier today, genies that come out of bottles have a habit of going walkabout.

And a fresh set of Pentium 4 benchmarks, sure enough, has appeared on the Web, this time on a Japanese site.

The figures compare the Pentium 4 against Athlon Thunderbirds, the 1GHz Pentium III, and a number of other processor platforms.

Again, we'd urge caution when viewing the results, but as sure as eggs-is-eggs, we're going to see more of these in the next few weeks and months.

GaMeOvEr schrijft: "Het heeft even geduurd, maar nu komen dan eindelijk ook de snellere SCSI-DVD's. Toshiba is een van de eerste met een 10s SCSI DVD speler, reden genoeg voor Storage Review om er een review van te maken. Ze vinden dat hij op DVD gebied een goede performance heeft, (netjes volgens specs, geen overdrijvingen hier! ) maar op CD-gebied kan er nog het een en ander verbeterd worden, waaronder de DAE scores."

Toshiba's latest SCSI DVD-ROM is a very solid performer overall. CD speeds are right in line with other 40X units we've tested, and it turns in DVD scores second only to Pioneer's 16X ATAPI drive in our (admittedly young) database. We like that Toshiba is improving their digital audio extraction speeds, but these days, 12X minimum DAE should be standard. We hope to see Toshiba work towards this and add support for accurate streaming. For those who are concerned with noise, the Toshiba is by far the quietest 40X drive we've yet tested.

On the down side, the wide variation in Winmark scores across our four test CDs made us a bit edgy. Most units we test manage very similar scores across the four discs, but the Toshiba's scores deviated by nearly 17%.

Finally, we were happy to see DVD speeds approach the drive's 10X rating. Those who own software apps on DVD will be pleased to know they are getting full advertised speeds with this drive.

There's really no glaring weakness in the SD-M1401. Even its $150 sticker price is pretty reasonable considering the SCSI interface and 10X DVD speeds. For those who already have SCSI-based systems and are looking for a good DVD-ROM, the SD-M1401 will make a fine addition.

Sharky Extreme bevestigt in zijn IDF Report dat de Pentium 4 een nieuwe behuizing en voeding vereist. Intel heeft hiervoor namelijk speciaal de ATX 2.03 specificatie in het leven geroepen. De power supply moet zoals bekend voldoen aan de ATX12V specs. Hieronder meer info:

Intel had a new revision of the ATX spec made for the Pentium 4 to cover its various physical needs. The ATX 2.03 specification covers the new case, motherboard, and power supply designs needed to be compliant with Intel's reference Pentium 4 platform design. This will have a direct impact on you if you ever plan on purchasing a Pentium 4 system, so we suggest you read this section and what we think the consequences will be. This will have less of an effect on companies like Dell, IBM, and Compaq, who tend to design their own platforms off of what Intel designs.

The Case

On the case side, ATX 2.03 specifies four new screw holes on the motherboard tray. These screw holes are needed to mount four screw-in supports that lie under the Pentium 4 processor. These four supports are to hold up the reference Pentium 4 heat sink, which we will talk more about later in the article. There are no cases we know of available today that meet the ATX 2.03 specifications, so we suggest you hold off on buying that $200 super cooling case if you think you might ever get a Pentium 4. Don't fret though, we do expect that you will be able to manually drill the four holes into an old case in order to mount a Pentium 4 without having to buy a whole new case.

The Power Supply

On the power supply side, ATX 2.03 includes a new kind of power supply specification called ATX12V. ATX12V power supplies will have two main differences from normal ATX power supplies:

There is a new +12V power connector and more +12 VDC output capability. This connector will provide more usable power to the CPU area of the motherboard. The Pentium 4 is a high-power processor and, by having a second power connector, motherboard manufacturers won't have to route a large amount of power across several crowded inches of motherboard. Power will instead be delivered closer to where it is needed. ATX12V cases will also need to provide more +5 VSB current. The minimum is now 1.0 amps with 2.0 amps preferred.

ATX12V cases will be fully compatible with systems that need previous ATX power supplies. In other words, an ATX12V case would work fine with most of today's motherboards. However, an ATX power supply will not work with a motherboard that needs the extra +12 V power connector.

Bij Thresh's FiringSquad hebben ze eens onderzocht hoe de Voodoo5, ATi Radeon en GeForce2 GTS presteren onder Windows 2000. Uit de 3DMark2000 en Quake 3 Arena resultaten valt te concluderen dat de 3dfx kaart het snelste is in Direct3D, de GeForce2 is heer en meester onder OpenGL. Als je echt goed van je games wilt genieten kun je natuurlijk het beste even Win98 of WinME ernaast draaien... Hieronder de conclusie:

If we assume that these numbers are reliable, the best choice for Win2K systems would have to be the GeForce2 for OpenGL and the Voodoo5 5500 for Direct3D. The Radeon performed terribly in OpenGL, while maintaining a decent showing in Direct3D.

Keep in mind that Win2K drivers are generally updated less than those in Win9x systems although some developers are better than others. The Detonator drivers from NVIDIA have been constantly evolving regardless of OS. ATI generally hasn't been known to have very many driver updates. 3dfx tends to have a pretty good set of drivers right out of the box. Updates are rare but come out promptly if any serious problems are discovered. Remember, stability, not speed, are the goal of these drivers.

Our recommendation? Don't choose Windows 2000 for your gaming system. Aside from Quake and a handful of other titles, there aren't many games that support Win2K. When there is support, performance generally isn't up to par with that of Win9x systems either due to the game itself, video card drivers, or other unknown OS issues.

Take a look at our Voodoo5 numbers on a Win98 P3-933 machine. They're a world apart from our Win2K results. Regardless of what card you pick, one thing is for sure, gaming on an NT based system is definitely nowhere near as good as it is on a Win9x OS. The only plus might be the fact that you might be able to recover from a game crash without having to reboot in Win2K.

Over bij Next Dimension Hardware hebben ze eens gekeken naar het Microstar MS-6321 Dual Socket-370 moederbord gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Het plankje heeft een vrij aardige layout met 4xDIMM, 5xPCI, 1xAGP en 1xCNR. Afgezien van een paar irritante punten wist de MS-6321 toch niet teleur te stellen, mede dankzij zijn goede stabilitet:

At a quick glance, this motherboard must look like a dream come true, and for a first generation overclockable dual-CPU board, I am surprised it is so stable. However, the board has a few really annoying quirks. For one, the voltage of CPU0 always runs about 0.04v above CPU1. Another is a rather serious USB performance/timing problems that prevents usage of even the most basic USB devices (such as keyboards and mice). However, MSI currently has a beta BIOS out (v1.5 beta 3) that fixes these problems.

There are also a few logical problems with the board's layout. I have found that only a select few IDE cables (not the ones supplied with the board) are long enough to reach from the onboard ATA-66 controller headers to the top drive bay of my case. My case, although a considered a full tower, is not that tall.

All my complaints aside, the board runs perfectly, no crashes nothing. Perhaps the next revision of the board will have all the minor quirks worked out, maybe even a layout adjustment??. Perhaps even the next BIOS revision will fix the minor problems, who knows. Overall, a pretty good start by MSI.

Venema Computers dropte een berichtje in de nieuws-queue dat de voorraad van AMD processors door de enorme vraag nogal krap is. Pas in de loop van volgende week is nieuwe voorraad te verwachten en de kans is vrij groot dat die zendingen al geen "multiplier pinnen" meer hebben. Wees er dus snel bij als je nog wat wilt hebben aan je Asus A7V of Abit KT7.

Geachte heer/mevrouw,

Na alle commotie rond de processoren hier misschien wat duidelijkheid.

Zoals je misschien weet is XS2/Promedion de officiële distributeur van AMD in Nederland. Nou hebben zij mij laten weten dat de voorraad op enkele honderden stuks na op is en dat pas volgende week een nieuwe voorraad processoren wordt ingevlogen.

Grote kans dat daarbij de gelockte versies zitten. Dit vanwege het feit dat er een X aantal dagen zit tussen de oude voorraad en de nieuwe voorraad. Tevens kopen wij van Venema Computers bij ECL Computers in Hoofddorp (tevens groothandel maar onafhankelijk). Ook zij kampen met hetzelfde probleem de oude voorraad raakt op maar geen nieuwe tot volgende week halverwege.

Eerder waren er al signalen dat Nederland vaak achter loopt bij de verkrijgbaarheid van nieuwe processors. In dit geval is dat alleen maar een voordeel: hoe langer AMD "vergeet" de aangepaste Durons en Tbirds naar Nederland te verschepen, hoe beter het is .

Het volk van Storage Review heeft een review geschreven van de nieuwe IBM Deskstar 40GV, een 5400rpm harddisk met maar liefst 20GB per platter. Verder beschikt de drive over een buffer van 512KB en een seektime van 9.5ms. Zoals we gewend zijn van IBM is dit weer een zeer aangenaam schijfje geworden:

IBM's drive runs cool to the touch even after extended use… exactly what one should expect from a two-disk, 5400 RPM unit. The drive is quiet, though not in the same league as the Samsung SpinPoint V10200 or the 7200 RPM Fujitsu MPF-AH. Idle noise is audible without opening our testbed's case (this can, of course, be said about virtually every other drive save Samsung and Fujitsu). Seeks are quite muted… among the quietest we've heard, though again louder than Sam and Fuji.

All in all, the Deskstar 40GV is quite an attractive package. Despite its 9.5 ms seek time and 512k buffer, this value drive offers category-leading performance. It balances scores between WinBench 99 and IOMeter, satisfying (or perhaps displeasing?) proponents of each benchmark. To us, IOMeter scores approaching that of the Samsung SpinPoint are impressive. Though the IBM doesn't quite surpass the Samsung, it offers up to twice the capacity of the Korean drive. IBM undoubtedly enjoys a better reputation than Samsung- most users probably trust Big Blue more. Finally, the drive can be had from many more resellers than Samsung's scarce unit. The Deskstar 40GV is fast, cheap, cool, quiet, and available. What more could you ask?

jant gaf ons een link naar dit bericht van de Telegraafnet waarin wordt vertelt dat een Nederlander vrij eenvoudig zichzelf toegang heeft kunnen verschaffen tot de centrale webservers van Microsoft.com. De softwaregigant vertelde geschrokken te zijn en heeft inmiddels de zaak weer dichtgesprijkerd :

De indringer kwam erachter dat bepaalde servers totaal niet beveiligd waren. ‘Ik kon zo de structuur van de site bekijken en zonder dat er om een password werd gevraagd rondneuzen op de servers in Amerika’, verklaart de computerliefhebber Dimitri, die voor de zekerheid zijn achternaam niet wil geven en tegenover Telegraafnet met nadruk stelt geen hacker te zijn. ‘Hackers doen strafbare dingen, plaatsen teksten op sites om te laten zien dat ze binnen zijn geweest. Ik heb bewust niets aan de site veranderd en Microsoft op de hoogte gebracht van mijn actie.’

Volgens Dimitri ligt Microsoft als slachtoffer voor een dergelijke actie best voor de hand. ‘Ze zijn groot, machtig en hun producten zijn goed. Bij zo’n bedrijf binnenkomen geeft dus toch wel een kick. Bovendien waarschuwen ze altijd voor veiligheidslekken en melden ze dat je de laatste patches moet downloaden en service packs moet installeren om indringers tegen te houden en schade door virussen te voorkomen. Ik wilde eigenlijk wel eens weten hoe ze zelf omgaan met de veiligheid.’

Bij Microsoft zelf is men ervan geschrokken dat het kennelijk zo gemakkelijk is om op de centrale servers binnen te komen. ‘Microsoft.com draait op een groep van wel 100 tot 200 servers’, vertelt Ruud de Jonge, die bij het softwarebedrijf verantwoordelijk is voor de technische ondersteuning in de Benelux. ‘Daarop kan natuurlijk wel eens iets mis gaan. Een website is eigenlijk net een huis. Dat kan zijn opgebouwd uit prima kwaliteit bakstenen. Maar indien je de voordeur open laat staan, kan iedereen zo naar binnen. Dat is zo ongeveer wat hier gebeurd is. De kwaliteit van onze producten staat dus niet ter discussie en er is niemand gedupeerd. Maar we nemen het wel heel serieus.’

Vandaag (1 september) is QuickOnline's Flatstream abonnement van start gegaan waarbij je voor een vast bedrag per maand zonder telkosten kunt internetten, (zie ook dit nieuwsbericht). Bij Internetnieuws.net kun je alvast wat ervaringen vinden van de eerste gebruikers:

Om elf uur, 31 Augustus 2000 werd het steeds spannender... nog een uurtje en dan zou FlatStream online zijn! 20 minuten.. 10... 3...2...1.. Om 0:00 uur, men kon nog niet inloggen. Om 0:01 uur niet, en ook om 0:30 niet. Dat leek dus een flinke tegenvaller. Echter om 0:57 postte arrow als eerste het bericht dat hij met Flatstream online zat. Anderen probeerden het, en kwamen er ook op. Ook ik . De snelheid is aangenaam, doch niet optimaal. 6 tot 7 kb/s met ISDN... maar zoals Arnold reeds zei : "Hoe snel was superweb toen ze net begonnen waren ?" Natuurlijk is dit nog maar s'nachts en ben ik ontzettend benieuwd of ik er morgen ochtend wanneer ik ontwaak er in 1 dial op kom en of de snelheid net zo is als nu. SuperWeb zeg ik nog niet op.. en dat zal ik denk ik voorlopig ook niet doen. Een oud-chinees spreekwoord : "Zeg SuperWeb nooit op voordat je Flatstream geschoten hebt!". SuperWeb heeft me toch heel veel geld bespaard, en vind het goed (ondanks alles) dat zij de eersten waren die het lef hadden dit aan te bieden.

Gisteren, de laatste dag voor MegaFlush 6, zijn er meer dan 2 miljoen blokjes geflusht door DPC, iets wat ons buiten de MF's om nog nooit eerder gebeurd is!

Koen stuurde ons weer een leuk nieuwtje op robotgebied. Twee wetenschappers hebben een stukje software geprogrammeerd, waardoor robots zichzelf na kunnen bouwen en zelfs verbeteren! Een enorme stap vooruit op het gebied van kunstmatige intelligentie:

They look like toys from outer space - motorized, white plastic gizmos crawling blindly on a table - and are hardly what most people would imagine when they think of the future of robots. But the experimental machines now being born at the Brandeis University DEMO Laboratory may well be to robotics what Kitty Hawk was to aviation.

The Wright Brothers in this case are Hod Lipson, a mechanical engineer, and Jordan B. Pollack, a computer scientist. In a paper in the Aug. 31, 2000 issue of Nature, they say their results represent the first time that robots have designed and constructed other robots - a new step towards the autonomy of artificial life.[break]De robots zijn ook behoorlijk slim. Er wordt berekend op welke manier het nageslacht het beste ontwikkeld kan worden. Zo ontstaan er steeds weer nieuwe soorten robots, die alsmaar sneller en beter worden. Deze worden eerst als 3D-model bedacht, en daarna ook daadwerkelijk gebouwd:[/break]Evolutionary computation, a specialty of Pollack's lab, provides methods for searching such a universe using variation and selection. Here, simulated machines are varied by changing the connectivity and weights of neurons, the location and lengths of bars etc., and are selected for reproduction based on their locomotion ability: A is better than B if A can travel farther than B in a specified period of simulated time.

To get to that next step, Pollack and Lipson landed a grant from DARPA and bought a rapid prototyping machine that constructs 3D shapes from computer models. Says Lipson: "The solidified design is sent from the evolution system to the RP machine, and simulation becomes reality. The entire system - of simulation, evolution, and construction - is nearly a self-replicating artificial life system." [break]Toch kunnen de robots het hele proces nog niet zonder mensen uitvoeren. Voor een paar kleine stapjes ('hersenen' inbouwen, motor aansluiten) in het proces is een menselijke hand nog noodzakelijk:[/break]"There still are humans involved," says Pollack, "but we just work for the robots, attaching their motors and downloading their brains into a microprocessor. The designs emerge from the interaction of physics and evolution."

The scientists believe their work is a significant step toward realizing robots that are inexpensive enough to be economically sustainable: "If we eliminate the human engineers, we can do for disposable robots what Bill Gates did for software releases," says Pollack, "make them so affordable that everyone can own 100."

In combinatie met de schietende robot en de zichzelf voedende robot kan dit dus best nog wel tot nare dingen leiden. Wie weet zullen er in de toekomst robots ontwikkeld worden die kunnen schieten, zichzelf van energie voorzien en zichzelf kunnen klonen of zelfs verbeteren. Dit alles zonder tussenkomst van de mens. Het doet me nog erg denken aan een science-fiction film, maar toch zijn we al een aardige stap op weg op dit te realiseren. ZDNet meldt dat zij van hun bronnen hebben vernomen dat de Celeron in de eerste helft van 2001 eindelijk van Intel het recht ontvangt om op 100MHz te mogen draaien. Eerdere berichten over een busspeed upgrade eind dit jaar zijn hiermee definitief ontkracht. De eerste chip die van de minder trage bus gebruik maken, is de Celeron 800 of 850. De 800 werd op een Gigabyte roadmap uit juli nog aangegeven als een Celeron met 66MHz bus. Aangezien de 800 al eind dit jaar of begin 2001 op de markt komt, is het niet onwaarschijnlijk dat de overgang pas met de 850 wordt gemaakt. Een snellere bus is in ieder geval sterk gewenst, gezien de wat trieste prestaties van de Celeron in vergelijking met de Duron:

The chip maker, sources told ZDNet News, will move its "value-oriented" Celeron processor to a 100MHz system bus in the first half of next year. The move isn't unexpected, as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) has already done so with mobile Celeron chips.

The boost won't come right away, though. Intel is looking to the 800MHz Celeron chip, due in the first quarter of next year, as the transition point to the faster 100MHz bus, sources said. Or the company may hold off until the 850MHz Celeron, scheduled for a second-quarter launch, they said.

Performance-minded PC buyers have been calling for Intel to raise the bus speed for some time. However, Intel officials maintain that most customers are more concerned with overall system price and processor megahertz ratings than bus speeds. Upping the bus speed has become a marketing decision.

Apu's Hardware heeft een interessant interview afgenomen met Sean Stanek, voormalig code optimalisatie goeroe bij AMD en verantwoordelijk voor de Athlon-optimized RC5 core. Sean ventileert zijn mening over het gebrek aan goede x86 compilers en spreekt over de voordelen van 'post-RISC' processors zoals de Athlon tegenover pure CISC en RISC CPU's. Dit keer geen standaard gekanker op de zogenaamde superieuriteit van RISC:

What do you see as the major bottleneck in computers today?

A combination of memory speed and poor compilers makes up the largest bottleneck. For things like high-speed graphics, the AGP bus did wonders for speeding up memory, and since graphics need a lot of memory, speeding up the memory helps to eliminate one bottleneck. And compilers for the x86 instruction set are generally very poor. Having a CISC instruction set is wonderful to write in, and you can do many RISC operations in just a single CISC operation. And because processor like the Athlon can execute several CISC instructions in a single clock, they can run several times faster than RISC processors. However, compilers understand RISC far better than CISC, and so compilers aren't very good, even hand-coded x86 assembly really isn't very hard to write (despite all criticism), and, at least for me, it's far easier to use than languages like C/C++. Either a good compiler is needed, or else more good assembly programmers should be introduced into the programming community. Well written assembly code can be anywhere from 10% to 500% faster than C/C++ compiled code. In fact, in real-world applications, I've *never* seen C/C++ code outperform well-written assembly code.

So, you're saying a CISC architecture is far superior to RISC?

A combination of a CISC instruction set and a post-RISC CPU core is better than both CISC and RISC. CISC is a bit large to put in all silicon, and RISC cannot scale very far because you'd have to be supplying the instruction decoders with a large number of instructions every clock. The Athlon and most x86 CPUs from the Pentium onward use the best of both worlds to create a superior CPU.

The Register schrijft dat Intel volgens een rapport van Asia Biztech aanhoudende problemen heeft om aan de enorme vraag naar processors te voldoen. Vooral de leveringen van low-end Celeron processors hebben te lijden onder de onevenwichtige vraag/aanbod situatie. Intel lijkt logischerwijs de voorkeur te geven aan de produktie van duurdere PIII's, aangezien er op de verkoop van deze processors hogere marges worden behaald. Inmiddels heeft Intel in 7 fabrieken de overgang naar 0,18micron technologie gemaakt. Halverwege volgend jaar wordt een deel van de P4 en PIII produktie overgezet op 0,13micron.

In juni werd al bekend dat Intel 2 miljard investeert in de uitbreiding van de chipfabriek in New Mexico. Dergelijke bouwwerken worden niet in een dagje uit de grond opgetrokken en het duurt daarom nog tot 2002 voordat de uitbreiding kan bijdragen aan de produktie van Intel:

The Nikkei report confirms continuing shortages of CPUs at both the high and the low end, and at the same time reveals projected shipment weightings for Intel's fourth quarter. Customers are being told that Celerons will suffer the most from the shortages, which will last, at least, until the end of the year, with Pentium IIIs receiving a 75 per cent allocation.

It seems, therefore, that Intel is having to trim its sails on its low end (and highly successful) Celeron line to maintain margins on Pentium IIIs while still performing a complex juggling act at its existing factories.

De leveringsproblemen voorspellen weinig goeds voor de prijs van de Pentium 4, die vanwege de grote die-size erg duur zal zijn om te produceren. Dit komt erg ongelegen nu Intel te weinig produktiecapaciteit heeft om aan de vraag te voldoen.

Ace's Hardware heeft een nieuwsposting geplaatst met de Stream benchmark resultaten van een Micron Samurai moederplankje met PC2100 DDR SDRAM. De Samurai chipset is speciaal door Micron ontwikkeld om de mogelijkheden van DDR SDRAM te demonstreren. Vooralsnog zijn er geen plannen om de chipset in produktie te nemen.

De benchmarks van Ace's laten zien dat een P6 systeem weliswaar wat voordeel heeft van het DDR geheugen, maar dat snelheidstoename beperkt is. De oorzaak is uiteraard de relatief trage frontside bus van de PIII, die beperkt is tot 1,06GB/s. Een Athlon met PC133 Virtual Channel SDRAM blijkt hogere resultaten te score. News.com meldt dat Sony eindelijk de langverwachte Clie PalmOS handheld heeft gelanceerd. De Clie (afkorting voor 'Communication Link Information Entertainment') komt qua features grotendeels overeen met de Palm V en heeft als belangrijkste verschil de slanke behuizing en de aanwezigheid van een Memory Stick Slot. Vanaf vandaag kun je de monochrome Klei voor 399 dollar pre-orderen op de Sony site. Later volgt een hipper model met kleuren LCD. Vanwege de extreme schaarste van dergelijke displays is Sony van plan om de displays zelf te produceren. Hiermee hoopt het leveringsprobleem zoals bij de vrijwel onverkrijgbare Compaq iPaq te voorkomen:

The Clie will be available for preorder starting today from the Sony Web site for $399. It will be available nationwide in September. The 4-ounce Clie includes 8MB of RAM and an 8MB Memory Stick, Sony's proprietary portable memory technology. Eventually, Sony plans to offer add-on gadgets like digital cameras, using the Memory Stick in the same manner as the Handspring uses its Springboard expansion slot.

[...] Sony may be relying heavily on brand to sell the device, which in its first version offers no obvious or meaningful hardware enhancements over existing products. Sony's original plan to release two versions of the device, one with a monochrome display and one with a color display, was scrapped because of shortages of the necessary components used in color devices.

Clie eventually may feature a reflective color display developed by Sony and used in Compaq's iPaq device, which is based on Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system for handhelds. The iPaq is in extremely short supply and is back-ordered at most online retailers.

"Color displays are rare," said Richard Doherty, president of Envisioneering Group, who expects Sony to ramp up its own supply of displays. "And reflective color displays are the scarcest displays on the planet."
