sMart vertelt ons dat ook Compaq heeft besloten (een deel van) de broncode van haar UNIX-systeem vrij te geven. Er is nog weinig bekend over wat er precies opengesteld gaat worden:

Hoewel er nog weinig details bekend zijn over de voorgenomen stap, zeggen bronnen binnen het bedrijf dat Compaq alleen specifieke delen van het besturingssysteem openstelt. Het bedrijf wil als eerste het geïntegreerde 'Distributed Lock Manager' vrijgeven. Later volgen het bestandssysteem 'Advances File System' en het component 'Logical Volume Manager'.

Tru64, door Compaq in 1998 verworven als onderdeel van de overname van Digital Equipment, wordt net als Linux optioneel bijgeleverd op Compaqs Alpha servers. Uiteindelijk moet Tru64 ook beschikbaar zijn voor de NonStop Himalaya-lijn.

Die zal binnenkort van MIPS processoren overstappen op de Alpha chip. Tru64 is de laatste jaren gestaag in populariteit gegroeid en is volgens Compaq-kenner Terry Shannon "gewoon de beste Unix op de planeet."

Ja hoor, na tijden, nee jaren wachten is het er eindelijk door: de rechtszaak van het Amerikaanse DoJ tegen Microsoft. De uiteindelijke beslissing komt niet als een verrassing: Microsoft moet worden gesplitst in twee bedrijven, om zo de monopoliepositie terug te dringen. Dit bericht is te lezen bij CNN. Eén bedrijf is verantwoordelijk voor operating systems, het andere voor de rest.

WASHINGTON (CNNfn) - A federal judge Wednesday ordered that Microsoft be split into two companies, the largest court-ordered breakup since the 1984 dismantling of telephone giant AT&T.

Under the order, Microsoft would be divided into a PC operating systems company, and a company that holds the remainder of its business, including its dominant Office suite of applications, the Internet Explorer Web browser and other businesses.

Er is weer eens een nieuw virus ontdekt. Timofonica waart rond in Spanje. Het virus is gebaseerd op het bekende ILOVEYOU-virus, maar met een 'leuke' twist: in plaats van emailtjes te sturen naar adressen in de contactlijst stuurt hij de mails naar een mail-to-GSM gateway in Spanje, waardoor er SMS-jes verstuurt worden naar willekeurige telefoonnummers. Op de (Spaanse) GSM verschijnt dan het bericht 'Telefónica te está engañando.', oftewel Telefonica is cheating you. Het virus is dus niet echt gevaarlijk, het draagt eerder een boodschap:

"This seems to be a political virus", comments Mikko Hypponen, Manager of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure Corporation. "apparently the virus is trying to protest against the Telefonica company - and it attempts to do this by sending the message directly to people's mobile phones."

Overigens blijft dit virus voorlopig alleen in Spanje.

Bij The Tech Zone heeft men een review in elkaar geknutseld van de D-Link DMP-100 MP3-speler. Deze speler bevat (helaas maar) 32 MB geheugen, genoeg voor zo'n 8 MP3-tjes op een beetje fatsoenlijke kwaliteit. Dat is dan ook gelijk zijn grootste nadeel:

The only thing I dislike about the DMP-100 is that the unit only has 32 megs of memory. That means I run out of songs during my 1.5 to 2 hour workouts and have to repeat some. Yes you can expand the memory of the unit using SmartMedia cards. I added a 32 meg SmartMedia card to the unit and that extended my musical enjoyment. However, SmartMedia is very expensive. A 32 Meg card will set you back $80.

Iwill heeft op de Computex een plank met de DDR Socket A chipset van ALI geshowed. Het lijkt er dus op dat de release van de eerste DDR borden niet ver meer weg is:

Het is tegenwoordig een goede gewoonte van Iwill om een HighPoint ATA controller op de PCB te integreren. Om die reden is het waarschijnlijk de twee extra ATA kanelen geen feature van de ALI chipset zijn.

Coen Rijkaart schrijft dat Anandtech een flinke preview heeft geschreven over de Kyro, een videokaart gebaseerd op een revolutionair ontwerp. De kaart verzet alleen het werk wat gedaan moet worden, een traditionele kaart moet ook niet zichtbare gedeelten tekenen maar deze kaart heeft de technologie aan boord om die stap over te slaan .

Zoals je kan verwachten scheelt dat een heleboel werk, wat ongeveer betekend volgens STMicro dat de kaart met 250 MPixels/sec evenveel werk kan verzetten als een andere kaart met een fillrate van 750 MPixels. Naast een hogere effectieve fillrate gaat dit verhaal ook op voor geheugen bandbreedte, eigenlijk nog belangrijker aangezien de huidige videokaarten erg veel lijden aan te sloom geheugen.

Dit klinkt allemaal erg leuk, en dat is het zeker ook maar voorlopig ziet het er niet naar uit dat de performance van de eerste kaart gebaseerd op deze technologie bijzonder goed gaat worden (maar wel goed): in 16 bit is de GeGorce SDR in veel gevallen sneller, maar door het design van de kaart zijn de resultaten in 32 bit een stuk beter, daar is de kaart in de wat hogere resoluties in elke test sneller dan een GeForce DDR en hierbij moet je natuurlijk niet vergeten dat deze kaart erg beta is en maar een fillrate heeft van 250 MPixels en SDR geheugen: deze technologie kan volgens mij dus nog een mooie toekomst krijgen:

What is standing in the way between KYRO and success? Well, right now it is two main things: the drivers and the drivers. We understand that the drivers are early alpha drivers, however we have seen some companies release drivers nearly as buggy as these in order to get their product to market in time. We can only hope that PowerVR does not take this path and that the 30-60 days before product shipment is spent tweaking and perfecting the drivers.

The key to KYRO's success is its price. While it can't compete with the GeForce 2 GTS or the Voodoo5 5500 in terms of performance, the KYRO cards will also be considerably less expensive. With the 32 MB version slated to cost under $200 and the 64 MB version to cost slightly above the $200 mark, the 64 MB KYRO we tested is able to achieve speeds almost equal to 64 MB GeForce DDR cards costing over $100 more. We suspect that the 32 MB KYRO will perform nearly identically to the 32 MB DDR GeForce, making it about $50 less than the competition.

The idea behind a tile based rendering system is intriguing, to say the least. By shrinking the amount of data that must pass through the memory bus, a tile based rendering system could produce a video card that fully scales with core speed once again. Do Imagination Technologies / STMicro have what it takes to pull it off? If the KYRO is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes.

3DNow.org ontving van een roadmap van een grote moederplank fabrikant, waarin wordt bevestigd dat er bij de Thunderbird en Duron middels 4 pinnetjes een multiplier-override kan worden geforceerd. De enigste vrees die nu overblijft is de mogelijkheid dat AMD deze pinnetjes mankeert op de produktie Tbirds en Durons. Het is daarom nog even afwachten of de multipliers daadwerkelijk getweakt kunnen worden:

I just received a confidential roadmap from a major motherboard manufacturer that indicates that there are four pins on the Duron and Thunderbird CPUs that will allow a clock ratio override.

By activating this feature, the motherboard is capable of dictating the multiplier to the CPU, which allows easy multiplier-based overclocking in addition to front side bus manipulation.

The manufacturer of the board cautions that these pins, marked as reserved on the spec sheet, may be disconnected or removed on production CPUs, but there is hope that AMD may retain them.

Looks like this will both enable in-between sockets for overclocking and solutions directly acessing this feature on the motherboard.

Ik kwam dit toch redelijk grappige plaatje tegen op 3DNow.org. Als ik het goed begrijp is het afkomstig uit de catacomben van AMD's Fab30 in Dresden. De vitale oude heer in het midden is AMD CEO Jerry Sanders :

Bij Sharky Extreme heeft men een eerste kijk gekregen op de SiS 730S chipset voor AMD Athlon en Duron processoren. De chipset wordt gemaakt met een .18 micron productieproces en er kan tot 3GB PC133 RAM op gezet worden, waarvan dan 512MB kan dienen voor de geïntegreerde video chipset. Ja, de SiS 730S heeft een geïntegreerde 3D-chipset aan boord, waarover nog niet veel anders bekend is dan 'het is beter dan de anderen':

As far as the benchmarks are concerned, SiS claims better integrated video performance than Intel's upcoming i815 (with cache) and VIA's upcoming KM133 (with integrated S3 Savage 4). We hope to see the performance ourselves at some point.[break]Ook ATA-100 wordt ondersteund:[/break]
On the I/O side, the 730S provides an ATA-100 interface. We asked SiS if they thought ATA-100 was really necessary and they admitted that, in today's machines, the hard drive is the bottleneck, not the bus speed. But still, ATA-100 is a good feature for the OEM checklist. The chipset provides up to six USB ports split under two different USB masters. This pretty much gets rid of any need for a hub unless you go a bit overboard with your USB devices.

Misschien betekent dit wel de comeback van SiS - worden ze toch nog eens serieus genomen.

Het erg interessante AGP Pro, 6xPCI en 4xDIMM K7T Master Socket A plankje van MSI, dat we gisteren zagen opduiken in deze nieuwsposting met Socket foto's, blijkt ook nog eens over een onboard Adaptec 7892 Ultra-SCSI controller te beschikken. MSI is hiermee de eerste fabrikant die een Athlon bord met onboard SCSI op de markt brengt, een duidelijk teken dat de Athlon serieus genomen wordt door mobofabrikanten? Heise Online heeft de scoop:

Das K7T Master (siehe Bild) zielt auf den gehobenen Markt und bietet AGP Pro, Ultra-SCSI (Adaptec 7892), vier Speicher-Steckplätze, Onboard-Sound, sechs PCI- und einen CNR-Slot (Communication Network Riser, ein Nachfolger von AMR). Trotz der vier DIMM-Steckplätze unterstützt das Board laut Datenblatt nur 1,5 GByte Speicher.

Coen Rijkaart kwam langs fietsen met een link naar deze Silicon Investor post, waarin ene Pete Gerassi een interessante observatie doet over de mogelijkheid van multiplier-overclocking op de Thunderbird en Duron. Als het onderstaande verhaaltje juist is dan zouden mobo fabrikanten vrij simpel de multiplier kunnen overriden. QDI lijkt deze methode te gebruiken in hun KinetiZ 7T Socket A plank, die volgens speculaties in deze nieuwsposting al over multiplier-unlocking beschikt:

I believe that all is required is a logic gate to force the FID pins to the proper states for the desired multiplier. All that needs to be done is to and the inverted RESET# signal with the PWROK signal. Then the result is connects a 4 pin buffer to output to pins FID0 through FID3 the settings of a DIP switch or memory location. This buffer should be set to output no more than 2.4V when driving high and 0V when driving low. Since this driving is for a very short time and the resisters that are "laser etched" can be overcome without any resistor overheating. This time period between PWROK being true and RESET# raising to true, is when the processor is looking at what multiplier to set. The bit pattern to set is seen in the diagram on page 62 of the pdf document. Since this can be done via a small amount of circuitry on a motherboard, the processor multiplier can be overridden at cold boot (hard reset) and warm boot (processor already going but software reset like in BIOS).

This is a better way than by attaching a GFD or placing it into a socket adapter. This does allow overclocking but the CPU will always tell the correct settings, if not driven. This allows one to read the AMD suggested multiplier. This shutdowns all but the "high end" remarkers while still allowing overclocking at the customers desire.

De geruchten waren er al eerder, maar nu lijkt het toch zeker dat Abit aan een dual FC-PGA mobo werkt. In het Computex day artikel van Hardware Upgrade wordt een Abit VP-20 moederplank met twee FC-PGA sockets genoemd. Het bord is gebaseerd op de Apollo Pro 133A chipset en heeft een nogal erg vreemde layout. Hoe denkt men een dual bord met slechts 3 PCI slots te kunnen verkopen?:

Van Smith van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een verslag van de tweede Computex dag online gemikt, met helaas wat minder interessant nieuws dan het artikel van gisteren. Van beleefde een close encounter met een pratend moederbord van MSI, liep tegen een koperen heatsink van Neng TYI en babbelde wat met de designer van de Virtual Channel Memory specificatie:

The Acer group is a large companies that range from Ali to Aopen to Acer computers to Apacer. I met with Apacer to discuss their memory technologies. Apacer works closely with NEC and in my meeting, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jeffery H. Lee, a Californian who works for NEC and is the designer of Virtual Channel Memory (VCM).

[...] Although I had heard of VCM before, I had never thought to give it much attention because it had been written off early by several other web sites before I came on board Tom's Hardware Guide. However, after speaking with Mr. Lee, I am now very interested in evaluating this technology. Not only does it promise reduced latencies, but benchmark results that Mr. Lee and NEC's Misao Higuchi showed me reveal startling increases in bandwidth on benchmarks such as StreamD over SDRAM. VCM is an open JEDEC standard and will be no more expensive than comparable SDRAM. The technology will be rolled into DDR versions as well.

Mr. Lee and Mr. Higuchi promised that Tom's Hardware Guide will be provided with the new, updated 128MB VCM in about a month. We will certainly endeavor to review this technology swiftly because the design details Mr. Lee explained were intelligent and seemed extremely relevant to performance flaws innate to current memory technologies.

News.com meldt dat 3Com zijn slecht lopende dialup modem divisie af gaat stoten. Het nieuwe bedrijf gaat US Robotics heten, dezelfde naam die het bedrijf had toen het 3 jaar geleden door 3Com werd gekocht:

3Com, a once-leading purveyor of data-networking equipment, tomorrow will announce that the dial-up modem business it's spinning off will emerge with the same name it had when 3Com bought the company in 1997, an acquisition that eventually proved disastrous.

[...] Although the acquisition proved to be what some called 3Com's undoing, the U.S. Robotics brand is well-known, and 3Com pointed to industry forecasts showing that growth in dial-up modems will continue at a reasonable rate, despite the rapid rollout of high-speed cable and DSL Internet access.

3Com was caught with bloated modem inventories and modem speeds that started to top out, while Cisco Systems built up its business of selling routers to speed bits of data across corporate networks and the Internet.

Versapoint, een samenwerkingsverband tussen Versatel en het Amerikaanse Northpoint, is in Amsterdam, Rotterdan en Utrecht van start gegaan met de levering van DSL-diensten voor de zakelijke markt. De Versapoint DSL lijntjes hebben een upstream snelheid van 512Kb/s en een downstream van 2Mbit. Later dit jaar komt de dienst in een aantal steden ook beschikbaar voor de particulieren gebruiker:

Over 'enkele maanden' is de nieuwe dienst, die moet concurreren met KPN's MxStream, ook beschikbaar voor de particuliere internetter. Versapoint heeft hiertoe overeenkomsten gesloten met acht providers: Sonera, Concentric Network, World Online, Euronet Internet, Demon en de Versatel-zusters 24Hours,Versatel Telecom en Zon. Euronet Internet en Sonera bieden overigens ook ADSL-diensten aan via KPN.

Deze ISP's nemen het product bij Versapoint af. Over prijzen is nog niets bekend; deze zullen door de providers worden bepaald. Versapoint concentreert zich hierbij op het beheer van het breedbandnetwerk, terwijl de providers zelf kunnen verzinnen hoe hun diensten er precies uit komen te zien.

3D Chipset meldt dat 3dfx/GigaPixel nog tot juni 2001 de tijd heeft om een grafische accelerator te ontwikkelen voor gebruik in Microsoft's Xbox game console. Opvallend nieuws aangezien eerde bekend werd gemaakt dat nVidia met de deal naar huis was gelopen.

You all thought that Nvidia was in the bag for being the Graphics Proccessor for the XBox, right? Wrong! It seem as if Microsoft is giving 3dfx/Gigapixel a chance to design a better graphics unit. Sound suprised? If 3dfx/Gigapixel developes a better unit by June 2001, Microsoft can say Seeya Nvidia and use the 3dfx/Gigapixel chipset instead. Here is the shocking news:

GigaPixel entered into a development agreement with Microsoft on February 18, 2000 to develop a highly advanced graphics chip design for use in Microsofts soon-to-be-released X-box. This agreement included payment of development fees to GigaPixel, together with royalties for every chip sold using GigaPixels design. In early March, Microsoft advised GigaPixel that it intended to cancel the development agreement with GigaPixel and use another providers 3D chips and technology. On March 31, 2000, Microsoft and GigaPixel entered into a release agreement under which Microsoft paid to GigaPixel the up-front development fees of $14 million as provided by the development agreement. The release agreement severs the proprietary development relationship between the companies and provides that GigaPixel will use its best efforts to deliver by June 2001 a non-proprietary sample of a product similar to the originally specified design. The non-proprietary sample is intended to demonstrate the features and performance of GigaPixels advanced graphics chip technology. In the release agreement, GigaPixel also agreed to negotiate the terms of an equity investment by Microsoft in GigaPixel of up to $10 million.

Nightvision stuurde ons een link naar BetaNews waar gemeld wordt dat de Release Candidate 2 (build 2535) van Windows Millenium Edition klaar is. Gisteren werd al bekend dat het besturingssysteem begin volgende week in productie zal gaan.

As of today Microsoft announced that Windows Millennium, dubbed Windows ME by the marketing team pushing the operating system, has reached Release Candidate 2, version #2535. Windows Millennium is the last Windows operating system based on the 9x kernel, as Microsoft has scrapped plans to keep the business and consumer versions separated into NT and 9x, and combined forces for their next OS, Windows Whistler. Leaked versions of Whistler have been seen floating around on the net, and an official release of the software is set for next year.

Raar dat EBN Online begin vorige maand meldde dat Tulloch een single-channel chipset voor de Willamette zou worden, nu is het ineens een processor??

For all the fanfare made by Intel about its up-and-coming IA-32 processor codenamed Willamette, it has emerged that another IA-32 processor will displace it within a period of four months or so.

Willamette is scheduled to appear towards the end of this year, at clock speeds rising to 1.4GHz but conversations with a number of motherboard vendors has revealed they have no plans to support it.

Instead, they will wait for the next generation, codenamed Tulloch, which Intel has told them will arrive in the second quarter of next year.

One of the reasons for the reluctance to adopt Willamette is that Tulloch, although essentially based on the same architecture, will have 479 pins, rather than 423 pins. It is also expected to clock in at around 1.6GHz or 1.7GHz according to sources.

There will be two versions, one with a single Rambus channel and one with a dual channel, according to sources.

Bij Gamers Depot is een review te vinden van de 21 inch Diamond Plus 120u monitor met DiamondTron beeldbuis. Helaas was de reviewer niet echt te spreken over de beeldkwaliteit in resoluties boven 1280 x 1024 waardoor hij toch liever achter zijn 22" Iiyama kruipt :

Our overall experience with the 120u was positive, as long as you don't use it for high-end graphics users that want to do run their desktop in resolutions above 1280x1024, you should be fine. However, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of getting a monitor this large in the first place? We think so, and are sure that most of our readership would as well.

With pricing hovering in the $900.00 area, we would recommend forking over the extra cash and getting a 21" monitor that gives you a much better picture at all resolutions like the IIyama VisionMaster Pro 510, which you can pick up on the internet for under $1000.00. The 120u would become a much more viable solution for most if it sold for under $800.00.

JC's PC News 'n' Links heeft wat info gepost over GDI's KinetiZ 7T Socket A moederbord voor de Duron en Thunderbird. Het plankie schijnt namelijk een onboard multiplier-unlock feature te hebben waarmee door middel van jumpers de multiplier kan worden aangepast. Het is helaas nog niet een gegarandeerde feature maar het zou wel errug relaxed zijn als het door gaat. Hier het gedeelte uit deze vertaalde press release:

The multiplier of the AMD Athlon processors is locked internally just like with the Intel Pentium III processors. For Slot A Athlon processors the multiplier can be un-locked with the use of a special daughter card plugged in the Slot A processor PCB. For Socket A Athlon processors, it is said that KinetiZ 7T has been integrated with a multiplier un-lock circuit. With this technology the multiplier of the processor can be adjusted by a jumper on the mainboard, instead of with a separate add-on daughter card. However there are no precise details available about that yet.

Intel's Willamette Processor is the successor to the PentiumIII line of processors. This new processor is based on a whole new architecture and is no longer based on the original P6 core which has been in circulation since the mid 90s. The new Willamette Processor is the new generation processor which will initially be released with 256k of L2 Cache (the same size as the Coppermine). The initial frequency of the Willamette will be 1.3GHz utilizing a 400MHz Front Side Bus. The CPU is in a kind of FC-PGA format using a total of 423 pins to transfer data. On top of the Flip Chip style die is a small cap kind of like the cap seen on the original Celeron. Why do this? Simple, it allows better heat transfer and less troubles as seen on the Coppermine CPUs. Ok ok enough is enough,here are the pics:
