Tom heeft het eerste deel van zijn Computex verslag gepost, met daarin info over de waren die op de stands van QDI, AOpen, SiS, FIC en Q-Lity werden gepresenteerd. Van QDI weten we inmiddels dat zij een Socket A moederbord op de markt gaan brengen waarmee de multiplier van de Thunderbird en Duron aangepast kan worden. Ook interessant voor overklokkers is de AOpen PA256 Deluxe GeForce2 videokaart met super tweakbaar 'OpenBIOS'. Deze maakt het mogelijk om het voltage, de kloksnelheid en een aantal AGP functies te configgen (thanks niels tijssen voor de tip):

Volgens The Register heeft Intel een hele makkelijke oplossing voor haar moederborden/chipset-probleem.

"There are loads of 3rd party boards that you can use."

Nou, duidelijk advies dus. Daar kunnen we wat mee. Zoals bekend ligt het probleem bij de SDRAM moederborden voor Coppermines. Intel heeft op het moment alleen de verouderde BX chipset om deze markt te ondersteunen. Deze chipset mist nieuwe features als AGP4X (OK, daar heb je dan ook niet zo veel aan, maar toch). Alleen de RDRAM-chipsets worden door Intel steeds beter vertegenwoordigd.

Overigens is het op dit moment ook bij AMD zo dat de competitie (VIA) meer features in de chipsets verwerkt dan AMD zelf.

Wetenschappers zijn er in geslaagd om een transistor te maken die 50 nanometer klein is, de kleinste transistor die tot nu toe gemaakt is door de mensheid. Deze transistor is zo gemaakt dat hij een paar problemen ontwijkt waar de huidige transistors last van hebben: de verwachte stop van de miniaturisering van transistors omdat hierbij een dunne metalen layer kan worden gebruikt om patronen in het silicon te etsen in plaats van met licht. Hiernaast is het isoleren van deze zogenaamde 'verticale transistor' ook gemakkelijker omdat het isolatie materiaal in een latere stap in het productie proces toegevoegd kan worden . Naast dit, ook erg leuk, heeft ie ook nog twee 'gates' ipv. de een die je normaal ziet, wat de snelheid van een chip kan verdubbelen :

Bij Tresh's Firing Squad hebben ze eens gemeten wat de nieuwe AMD Thunderbird allemaal doet in 3D-applicaties (lees: spellen). Ze waren ook nog eens zo aardig de resultaten online te zetten. Wat opviel was dat de GeForce2GTS het erg goed deed met de T-bird, maar dat de prestaties van de Voodoo5 5500 nogal tegenvielen. Stabiliteit van het systeem was bij alle testen goed te noemen.

If you're looking for the fastest video card to go with your brand new Thunderbird system, the GeForce 2 GTS is currently the best solution available. It will be interesting to see how the Voodoo5 drivers mature, we're sure 3dfx fans would like to see those low resolution numbers improve.

Zo volgend jaar rond deze tijd kunnen we volgens etown.com een Diamond Rio MP3 speler verwachten met 500MB aan opslagcapaciteit in de vorm van een DataPlay micro-optical disc (zie ook deze nieuwsposting van begin april). De schijfjes zijn erg geschikt voor dit soort multimedia apparaatjes omdat ze erg goedkoop zijn om te fabriceren en een vrij grote opslagcapaciteit hebben, zeker als je bedenkt dat je het nu vaak met 32MB aan duur flash-geheugen moet doen. Vandaag bericht The Financial Times dat Excite het initiatief heeft genomen voor de besprekingen met Chello.

Dat lijkt plausibel, want de buitenlandse operaties van @Home zijn zwaar verlieslijdend. Onder meer in Nederland gaat het niet goed met @Home en blijken hoge investeringen nodig om nog maar enkele tienduizenden klanten te kunnen aansluiten op de netwerken van Essent (Castel en Palet).

Een van de problemen is dat @Home in Europa geen eigen kabels heeft en er maar niet in slaagt om andere partijen tot toegang te bewegen. In Nederland heeft enkel het Nutsbedrijf in Zuid-Limburg de poorten voor @Home geopend. @Home wil wel elders toegang, maar houdt zelf bij Essent de poort voor derden gesloten.

Voor Chello zou het samengaan met @Home betekenen dat ze in Nederland een dominante partij wordt met Internetaanbod op de kabel. Overigens heeft Liberty Media van @Home-moeder AT&T al een aandeel van 3,5 procent in Chello.

Onze Russische vrienden van iXBT-Hardware schreven een uitgebreide review van de Asus V7700 GeForce2 videokaart. Het exemplaar wat zij in handen kregen bleek extreem goed overklokbaar te zijn; het geheugen draaide op 410MHz en de core op 240MHz. Het resultaat was een winst van 30% in Quake 3 @ 1600 x 1200.

So, ASUS AGP-V7700 is a mass product and the tests proved that it doesn't yield to NVIDIA reference card at all. Although ASUS AGP-V7700 is practically a complete copy of the reference design, it is much more overclockable. We have to stress here that the card's overclockability is unique for each particular piece. However, we won't hesitate a second and recommend this card for those of you who always buy the newest fastest gaming products.

If you have NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Ultra or NVIDIA GeForce256 with SDR memory, then ASUS AGP-V7700 will be a good upgrading solution for you.

If you have a graphics card on NVIDIA GeForce256 with DDR memory, we wouldn't be so anxious to replace it. Try to wait till the official launching of DirectX 8.0 and look what changes will happen after that. And in the meanwhile the greater part of GeForce2 GTS potential still remains undemanded, because there are not so many games yet, which could involve all the feature of NVIDIA's new chip.

Bij nV News staat wat info over nVidia GeForce2 MX, een low-end versie van de GeForce2 GTS die we eerder tegenkwamen als de NV11. De GeForce2 MX zal op 175MHz draaien en heeft een 2 pixel pipeline (itt tot 4 van de GF2 GTS). Op het gebied van geheugen zal er gebruik gemaakt worden van 166MHz SDRAM.

It's based upon a "light" version of the GTS core and will be clocked at 175 MHz. The core has a 2 pixel pipeline that can shade two texels each a piece, allowing multitexturing without performance loss. This is the first difference between it and the GTs as some of you may recall that the GTS has a 4 pixel pipeline. When applying single textures, the GeForce 2 MX should be as fast as the GeForce 256, but will take the lead with multi-texturing... theoretically anyway.

GeForce 2 MX based cards will have SDR memory clocked at 166 Mhz. Because of this, cards based upon this chipset should have similar performance values to and even sometimes inferior to a GeForce DDR card. This reminds me about what happened with the TNT2 M64. Many people who purchased the card thought they were getting a real TNT2, and got stuck with the performance at similar levels to the TNT. Nothing else to say but ... Wait & See!

Denk je, "ik betaal veilig, ik betaal via een SSL verbinding", dan heb je het toch mooi mis als je Internet Explorer 4, 4.01, 5 of 5.01 gebruikt. Deze versies van IE gaan niet helemaal netjes om, met de controle van SSL-certificaten, ze laten wat steekjes vallen wat ervoor kan zorgen dat de informatie die je verstuurt in verkeerde handen kan terecht komen :

Wie een creditcardbetaling op het net verricht of persoonlijke gegevens invult, heeft vaak te maken met SSL. De gegevens worden dan versleuteld over internet verzonden, onderin de browser is dan een sleuteltje te zien. De browser van Microsoft gaat hier echter slordig mee om, zo ontdekte het Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) van de Carnegie Mellon Universiteit.

Het gaat om IE 4.0, 4.01, 5 en 5.01. Microsoft komt met patches voor deze versies. Volgens de softwarefabrikant komt het lek in slechts zeer bijzondere gevallen aan het licht. Kwaadwillenden moeten namelijk via een aanpassing in de DNS-entry een domeinnaam naar een eigen server zien te leiden.

Internet Explorer controleert weliswaar of een SSL-certificaat is afgegeven door een te vertrouwen partij, maar checkt de verloopdatum van dit certificaat en de naam van de server niet. Bovendien wordt het certificaat niet opnieuw gecontroleerd als er een nieuwe SSL-sessie wordt gestart. De beveiliging van IE is voltrekt onvoldoende, zegt CERT: "Er zijn veel manieren om misleidende DNS-informatie te verstrekken. Het is dus fundamenteel onveilig te vertrouwen op DNS-informatie."

Iets wat voor velen geen verassing zal zijn: De hoofdverdachte zal niet vervolgt worden, simpel weg omdat de wet daar in de Filippijnen geen mogelijkheden bied om cybercriminaliteit aan te pakken :

Het e-mailtje, voorzien van een bestand met de naam Loveletter, zorgde voor de wereldwijde verspreiding van het Iloveyou-virus. Miljoenen computers werden ontregeld. De schade die het virus aanrichtte is nog niet goed in kaart gebracht, maar experts spreken van miljarden guldens.

MiWa® meldt dat Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide een bezoekje heeft gebracht aan AMD's nieuwe fabriek, fab30 in Dresden, en daar een leuk artikel over heeft geschreven. Deze fabriek kan CPU's bakken met koperen interconnects, iets wat heel mooi is aangezien dat hogere kloksnelheden mogelijk moet maken :

As soon as both megafabs are working at 100% capacity, AMD will be able to supply 30% of the global demand for microprocessors. That's exactly what AMD is planning to do as soon as possible. The new Fab 30 is meant to have 1400 people working there at the end of 2000. There will even be 1800 people employed one year later. Thanks to those copper interconnects, AMD should be able to rise clock speeds for future processors at least as fast as Intel. This year is going to stay hot, because Intel's Willamette processor is supposed to become available in the fall at initial clock speeds of 1.4 GHz.

[...] Having such a production facility at their disposal, AMD is in a better position than ever before. The yield is quite impressive so far, and thanks to one of the most advanced material analysis labs, AMD is able to eliminate errors during the chip production really quickly.

Gamers Depot heeft een kleine review geschreven over de 16 speed DVD drive van AOpen. Volgens de benchmarks heeft deze drive een gemiddelde snelheid van 10x voor het lezen van DVD's en 30x voor het lezen van CD's, een prima resultaat aangezien alle drives nooit constant op maximumsnelheid draaien. De reviewer is daarom ook wel te spreken over deze drive en vindt dat als je moet upgraden geen slechte keus maakt als je de AOpen 16x DVD drive kiest :

AOpen is one of the largest PC component manufactures around, and have more recently been hopping on the DVD bandwagon courtesy of Pioneer (Pioneer makes the DVD drives for AOPen). As DVD drives become more popular, and start to replace CD-ROM drives as the default optical storage unit in computers, the need to have them read faster is becoming ever increasing.

AOpen has answered that call with what is presumablly the fastest drive of its kind, their new 16X DVD. At this speed we're looking at the potential for data throughputs faster then some hard drives out there, and the option to ditch your CD-ROM drive forever, as this drive also boasts a 40x CD-ROM read capability.

[...] With a nice SoftDVD player, and killer speed, the AOpen 1640 DVD drive is one of the nicer ones around. Time will tell just how quickly DVD takes off for games, however we are seeing more software shipping on DVD like encyclopedias, and even some application software. Games are slowly catching on, and hopefully will come on DVD standard within a year or so.

If you're in the market to replace your current CD-ROM drive or just want a DVD drive, then this unit should be on your list. It also makes a good companion to a CDR/CDR-W drive for doing CD-CD "backups", and has a decent mp3 "ripping" speed of around 16x.

Insane bracht ons een link naar dit redelijk grappige artikeltje van The Register, over een Rambus directielid die afgelopen maandag uit het Computex DDR seminar werd gekickt . De arme man had zich niet geregistreerd en zijn aanwezigheid werd daarom niet door gastheer VIA op prijs gesteld:

A man who Brown named as Richard Crisp, a senior executive at Rambus Inc, had not registered and was therefore requested to leave the forum, said Brown.

Via had hosted the several hour long seminar in a bid to explain to journalists, analysts and the like its commitment to DDR (double data rate) memory and the PC-133 SDRAM (synchronous random access memory) it pushed at last year's Computex show.
