With the drive speeds we are talking about there is no real loss of speed when going from a fairly fast CD-ROM to these drives. The access times are still mighty slow but that is an industry wide thing. The drives smooth mechanics are top notch. The installation is easy as long as your make this drive a master on the secondary channel. The price is a bit stiff if all you're going to do is use it as a CD-ROM reader, but these day’s why limit your media choices? So here is my recommendation: Get a DVD Player, and get a fast one. And, the Pioneer DVD-115 is the current speed champ. Mark up one for the tech types from Pioneer. This one is the most important point of all. This 16x-speed Pioneer DVD Player is a winner!
