I tried out several clips from my DVD library using both the 16X and 10X drives. First let me say that I could tell no difference between the playback quality when using either one. The video playback from either drive was excellent in quality, being very sharp, clear, and detailed in presentation. The video displayed was also very smooth, lacking the jerky quality that I had noted in an older Toshiba DVD-ROM that I once owned. In addition, typical decoding artifacts were almost nonexistent. The only issue that I could find, and only with very close scrutiny, was a slight graininess to some backgrounds, typically where the background was darker in color. This graininess was not visible in the same scene when played on my stand-alone DVD player while displayed on an analog TV monitor.
[...] As the benchmarks on page 2 show, the DVD-115 performs about the same as its older 10X sibling in access scores, but pulls into the lead in both CPU utilization and overall drive performance, managing to come very close to the Asus 50X CD-ROM drive in overall CD performance figures.
