Nu.nl meldt in dit artikel dat de BSA tot wel 20.000 gulden zal betalen aan tipgevers van illegaal softwaregebruik bij bedrijven, overheden en andere instellingen. De BSA heeft deze regel ingevoerd omdat Nederland ruim boven het gemiddelde zit qua 'Warez gebruik' in Europa :

BSA, een internationaal samenwerkingsverband van softwareleveranciers, heeft dit donderdag bekendgemaakt. Tipgevers kunnen hun informatie telefonisch en via internet kwijt bij het door BSA geopende Meldpunt Illegaal Softwaregebruik. Dat kan eventueel ook anoniem, aldus de belangenclub.

De tipgever kan aanspraak maken op een beloning van tien procent van de door BSA te incasseren schadevergoeding, met een maximum van f 20.000 per tip.

De FNV vindt het 'niet deugen' om mensen te belonen die melding maken van illegaal softwaregebruik. "In feite roep je mensen op om bedrijfsspion te worden in het eigen bedrijf in plaats van de kwestie intern aan de orde te stellen", aldus een woordvoerster van de vakcentrale.

Toegang tot Windows-code
Microsoft zal ontwikkelaars toestaan om toegang te krijgen tot de Windows-code. Volgens de rechter zou Microsoft in het verleden programmeurs niet eerlijk hebben te behandeld.

Internet Explorer wordt verstopt
Een van de heikele punten in het proces was de koppeling van Internet Explorer aan Windows. Microsoft stelt nu voor de browser zo te verbergen dat deze niet direct in beeld is. Microsoft claimt dat de browser niet te verwijderen is, omdat het programma geheel geïntegreerd is met Windows.

Computerfabrikanten mogen de desktop veranderen
In het verleden stond Microsoft niet toe dat sommige computermakers programma's op de desktop zetten die concurrerend waren met andere Microsoft programma's. Microsoft zal nieuwe initiatieven op dit vlak niet langer verbieden.

Speciale deals worden afgeschaft
Microsoft zal bepaalde afspraken, om haar producten ten voordele van concurrenten te promoten, niet meer maken. Concurrenten moeten hierdoor betere kansen krijgen.

Het bedrag dat per maand betaald moet worden is 99 gulden, een gewoon telefoonabonnement is echter niet meer nodig. Beperking is wel dat je (maar) 65 uur per maand via deze dienst het net op mag, wie dit overschrijdt zal een waarschuwing ontvangen. Voor grootgebruikers zal later een apart pakket komen.

Ilse vond het te laat om nu nog met een gewoon 'gratis' internetabonnement te komen. Flat fee is een stuk hipper. Sinds vandaag kan men zich inschrijven bij Ilse.com. Om capaciteitsproblemen te voorkomen, heeft Ilse voor de voorzichtige benadering gekozen. Deze maand is er plaats voor slechts 5000 abonnees.

Voor 99,95 gulden per maand kunnen zij bellen (binnen Nederland) en internetten zonder verdere kosten. QuickOnline zorgt voor de achterliggende techniek. Het verkeer vindt plaats via het carrier select netwerk (1620) van Interlink. Een apart telefoonabonnement is dus niet meer nodig.

Vorige maand kondigde QuickOnline al aan op korte termijn met een dergelijke dienst te beginnen. Uiteindelijk heeft Ilse dus de primeur, QuickOnline zal later met een vergelijkbaar pakket komen. McMiGHtY meldt dat de Filipijnse informaticastudent Onel de Guzman (geen vrouw of Duitser dus) het 'I Love You' virus mogelijk per ongeluk... verspreid heeft . De student heeft niet letterlijk gezegt dat hij de maker was maar zijn advocaat was zo aardig om te vertellen dat die ie ook de maker van de worm is:

De Filipijnse informaticastudent Onel de Guzman (23) heeft het I Love You-virus mogelijk "per ongeluk" verspreid. De Guzman vertelde dat donderdag op een persconferentie. De student zei niet expliciet dat hij de maker van het virus was, maar dat werd later door zijn advocaat wel toegegeven. Ook 'anderen' zouden een aandeel hebben in de creatie van het virus, waaronder De Guzman's vriend Michael Buen. De Guzman is dagenlang door de politie gezocht en legde vandaag, getooid met zonnebril, een verklaring af.

Onel de Guzman is in elk geval de maker van een programma dat op zijn school, het AMA Computer College in Manilla, werd verworpen als zijnde 'crimineel', omdat de software de diefstal van wachtwoorden mogelijk maakte. Het was zijn afstudeerproject, waarvoor hij zakte. Het programma lijkt veel op het I Love You-virus. Zijn vriend Michael Buen slaagde eerder deze maand wel op het college. De Guzman stond bekend als een briljante student.

De Guzman zei donderdag dat het hem niets deed dat het virus zoveel schade heeft aangericht. Hij zei zich niet te kunnen herinneren waar hij op 4 mei, de dag dat het virus toesloeg, was. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat De Guzman de computer van zijn zus Irene gebruikte voor het virus.

Ghz meldt: dat ze bij FrostyTech creatief bezig zijn geweest en een koperen homemade heatsink hebben gebouwd. Aangezien koper ongeveer 2x zo goed warmte geleid als aluminium lijkt het me wel duidelijk dat dit een van de beste heatsinks is die je op deze aardkloot kan vinden :

Norman heeft een Unix variant van LoveLetter.A ontdekt, deze heeft een beperkte verspreiding omwille van compatibiliteitsredenen. Unix.LoveLetter.A komt momenteel niet in het wild voor. Unix.LoveLetter.A is de variant van VBS.LoveLetter.A die geport is naar de UNIX omgeving. Het virus gebruikt een shell script waarmee hij zichzelf e-mailt naar alles adressen dat hij vindt in de bestanden ".muttrc" and ".mailrc". Het virus gebruikt het standaard UNIX mailprogramma mailx. Het attachment heet Loveletter.sh. Het virus start mee op telkens je aanlogt in Unix. Dit komt omdat er een verwijzing in het opstartbestand ".bashrc" staat van de Bourne Again Shell. De payload is even desstructief als de originele LoveLetter.A. Unix.LoveLetter.A zal pogen bestanden te wissen met extenties .JPG, .JPEG, .MPG en .GIF.

In Real Life is de kans dat je dit virus tegenkomt niet erg groot: 1 er zijn niet veel unix gebruikers en 2, als je Unix gebruikt en je opent dit virus moet je eens na gaan denken op Windows niet iets voor je is...

Weer een overwinning voor de muziek industrie, MP3.com heeft 'vrijwillig' besloten om de MyMP3.com database af te sluiten om hun goede wil te tonen:

De 500.000 geregistreerde bezoekers van MyMP3.com kunnen voorlopig niet via deze site luisteren naar muziek van artiesten die onder zijn gebracht bij Sony, EMI, BMG Entertainment, Universal Music Group en Warner Music Group. De vrijwillige maatregel vloeit voort uit een recente uitspraak door de rechter.

Eind vorige maand bepaalde een rechter in San Diego dat MP3.com zich schuldig maakt aan overtreding van copyrightwetten. Inzet van de zaak is een grote muziekdatabase bestaande uit meer dan 80.000 albums. Deze zijn via te beluisteren via het net.

Dit recht is evenwel alleen voorbehouden aan degenen die het originele album in hun bezit hebben. MP3.com controleert dat online. Vandaar dat MP3.com – in tegenstelling tot de aanklagers, de platenindustrie – van mening is dat het niets illegaals doet. Toch heeft de populaire site nu ingebonden. "We willen onze goede wil tonen en laten zien dat er ons veel aan is gelegen tot oplossingen te komen", aldus de president van MP3.com in een verklaring.

Mister Freeze schrijft dat Kyle van HardOCP een vergelijking tussen de GeForce2 en Voodoo5 5500 (alweer een...) heeft gemaakt, hij is wat alternatief bezig geweest en heeft een hele stapel zinloze grafieken gemaakt om het verschil tussen 26.6 en 25.9 frames per seconde goed duidelijk te maken...:

As we always do, we are gonna shoot straight with you. We are 3dfx fans, as well as nVidia fans (en dan toch vooral van 3dfx...), and I saw 3dfx becoming the serious underdog in the 3D wars. I already had it in my mind that the GeForce2 would summarily hand 3dfx their own ass till the next round of silicon hit the shelves in 6 to 12 months from now.

3dfx has blown me for a loop in that they have a card in the Voodoo 5 that will keep up with the GeForce2. My hat is off to BOTH companies here in the fact that both of them have brought some really nice products with muscle to market.

I think where we saw the 3dfx Voodoo5 get skunked in the lower resolution benchmarks is a driver issue and not a horsepower issue. I would guess that we see some more driver sets out of 3dfx before the summer is up that bring the performance level up 15 to 25%. I have even heard of third parties developing drivers for the Voodoo family of cards. So there is no telling what we might see.

Bij Penstar Systems is een artikel geschreven over de geheugen-bottleneck die veel nieuwe videokaarten ondervinden. Dit zien we nu al terug in veel reviews van de GeForce2 GTS. Er wordt voorspeld dat dat bij de ATI Radeon en V5 5500 ook een probleem wordt. Deze tabel geeft weer hoe efficiënt de verschillende videokaarten door de jaren heen met hun geheugen omspringen (hogere efficiëntie = beter). Het valt op dat dit steeds minder wordt.

[break]Over de mogelijke oplossingen van deze problemen wordt geschreven:[/break]DDR memory is going to go up to 200 Mhz by the end of this summer, but that still will not touch the needs of the current crop of chips (at least the non-scalable ones). Work is now being done on QDR solutions (Quad Data Rate), but we will not start seeing this type of memory for at least another year or so. If the GeForce 2 GTS were supplied by QDR memory, it still would be searching for extra bandwidth in multi-texturing operations!

RAMBUS type memory really is not very attractive for graphics applications for several reasons. While DRDRAM has a lower pin-out count, it requires as many if not more power and ground leads as SDRAM! Even though it does have a higher bandwidth per pin, the costs associated with DRDRAM and boards using that type of memory are much, much higher than a similar solution using SDR/DDR SDRAM.

[...] iCast en Tribal Voice hebben zelf twee weken geleden al een klacht neergelegd bij de FCC. Daarin wordt de instelling gevraagd het openstellen van het AOL chatnetwerk 'te bemoedigen'. Met meerdere bedrijven achter de actie wordt de druk groter. Volgens CNet zal Excite@Home de klacht steunen. Van Yahoo is niets bekend.

De chatoorlog duurt nu al bijna een jaar. Diverse bedrijven hebben geprobeerd hun software compatibel te maken met die van AOL. Telkens stak de marktleider daar een stokje voor door haar software aan te passen. Zo werd de deur dichtgesmeten voor onder meer Microsoft, Yahoo en Tribal Voice. De bedrijven beschuldigen AOL ervan initiatieven voor een chatstandaard de frustreren.

Na Riva 3D en Tech Extreme heeft nu ook GamePC een review klaar van de Asus V7700 GeForce2 GTS kaart. De kaart wist een maximale core / memory snelheid te trekken van 240/390, net zoveel als de Gladiac van Elsa eerder liet zien. Qua software komt de kaart geleverd met SmartDoctor tweaking utilities, DVD2000 DVD Player en 2 full games. Omdat de V7700 ook vrijwel hetzelfde is als nVidia's reference design was de performance vergelijkbaar met de eerdere GeForce2 GTS reviews.

Basically, if you already own a GeForce DDR, there's no reason to upgrade unless you need to have the latest and greatest at all times. The differences between the GeForce SDR and GeForce2 at high resolutions are apparent, but not enough so to toss away your old cards on a whim. Folks with older TNT2 Ultra's or Voodoo3's will show large performance differences, and perhaps should start saving their pennies for one of these bad boys, or looking to pick up older GeForce cards up for discounted prices nowadays.

The V7700 is a fine example of a solid card based on a great chip, all packaged together for a nice overall package. It wasn't really faster than any other GeForce2 we've had our hands on, but it is definitely the most complete GeForce2 yet. Innovative Cooling, nice software utilities, and an included software DVD player, and the thing just performs really well, what more can you ask for?

There are full voltage tweaking abilities through the use of jumpers. Full settings from 1.3V to 2.05V in .5V increments are available. I regret to inform you that our plan to provide a RAGE FURY MAXX driver for the Windows 2000 operating system cannot be completed. Due to issues with enumerating the chip ID's, of the dual RAGE 128 PRO graphics chips, we are unable to complete the driver for our RAGE FURY MAXX card.

ATI sincerely apologizes for promising a driver to you and then being unable to complete it. This was an unforeseen technical issue during the development of the Windows 2000 RAGE FURY MAXX drivers.

Nu.nl meldt in dit bericht dat er een nieuwe gevaarlijk virus is opgedoken, genaamd het 'Southpark virus'. Dit virus is geen aftreksel van het I Love You virus, maar schijnt wel net zo gevaarlijk te zijn. Het virus komt via een Duits e-mail binnen en bevat een attachment 'SouthPark.exe' die je dus NIET moet draaien:

NEW YORK - Amerikaanse computerbeveiligingsbedrijven hebben woensdagavond opnieuw de noodklok geluid. Een nieuw destructief virus met de naam Southpark naar de gelijknamige tekenfilmserie heeft de kop opgestoken.

"Het Southpark-virus is geen variant op de I Love you-bug die miljarden dollars schade heeft aangericht, maar kan net zo destructief zijn", zo verklaarde Alan Comet van het softwarebedrijf Computer associates Internation Inc.

De e-mail waarmee het virus in computers dringt is geschreven in het Duits en draagt een worm bij zich onder de kop 'Servus Alter!'. In de tekst staan de woorden 'Hier ist das Spiel, das du unbedingt wolltest'. Het bericht heeft een attachment met de naam 'SouthPark.exe.'.

Het grote gevaar van het Southpark-virus schuilt in het feit dat er .exe.-tag in staat die veel computergebruikers zullen herkennen omdat ze bij veel spelletjes zo'n zelfde tag zien, aldus Comet.

Mensen zullen de attachment daardoor sneller openen met alle gevolgen van dien. Bovendien wordt het moeilijker om mensen duidelijk te maken dat ze het mailtje meteen moeten deleten. Aan de Love-bug zat een .vbs.-tag waarmee weinig gewone computergebruikers ooit in aanraking komen.

European institutions as well as private users and corporations should benefit from the new domain, as it is expected to improve the Internet’s image and commercial infrastructure in Europe. The domain name itself will be protected by the ICANN rules recommended by the World Organisation for Intellectual Property.

Cyberdeck schrijft dat bij CD Media World wat info is te vinden van de opvolger van de populaire PlexWriter 8/4/32A IDE herfikker. Deze nieuwe CD-RW drive zal IDE-ers nu ook de mogelijkheid geven om op 12x te branden, maar breekt tevens het CD-RW record met 10 speed. Je zou verwachten dat het ding een flinke buffer heeft maar die is slechts 2MB... Bij CDRInfo.com staat overigens de volledige press release, waarvan hieronder een gedeelte:

Intel heeft bekend gemaakt dat het de i820 Cape Cod moederplanken met een defecte Memory Translator Hub wil vervangen voor i820+RIMM exemplaren. Naast het vervangen van brakke mobo's zal Intel ook SDRAM reepjes omwisselen voor RIMMetjes. De complete terugroep operatie kan Intel een schadepost van 300 miljoen dollar opleveren wanneer alle kopers hun Cape Cod plank ter vervanging aanbieden. Volgens EBN Online werkt Intel op dit moment aan een nieuwe MTH, maar wil het niet zeggen wanneer deze gereleased wordt:

Bij StorageReview.com is een review geschreven van de Maxtor DiamondMax 60, een 5400rpm IDE harde schijf die, zoals de naam al zegt, in een grootte van maar liefst 60 gig verkrijgbaar is . De harde schijf blijkt nog redelijk snel, maar kan toch niet echt op tegen de competitie. Pluspunt blijft natuurlijk zijn grootte...

In conclusion, though it continues Maxtor's impressive time-to-market with the latest in areal densities, the DiamondMax 60 isn't quite the performance leader we were hoping. At least not yet, that is. Currently the Quantum Fireball lct series tops the charts in IOMeter results. This may change, however, with the direct competitor to the DM60, the Fireball lct15. In an effort to target certain markets, Quantum has ratcheted the lct15 down to 4400rpm operation. The lct series' leading IOMeter scores, therefore, are likely in jeopardy.

All things considered, it should be obvious that 5400rpm (or sub-5400rpm, for that matter) drives aren't geared towards users seeking high-performance. Rather, these drives are made to fit the bill in other areas: high GB/$ ratios and situations demanding cool and quiet operation. Under such parameters, the DM60 is a success. Those looking for quiet operation need look no further than the DM60. And though the DM60 may not be the primary drive of choice for performance-oriented machines, the drive (especially in its flagship 60 gig incarnation) could serve quite well in such machines as a secondary/backup/archives disk… all the more so considering the surpriningly rock-bottom prices for which we've seen previously massive Maxtor's selling. There's no reason to expect the DiamondMax 60 will be any different.

Bij iXBT Hardware is nu ook een review te vinden van de nVidia GeForce 2 GTS. Over het algemeen was men erg enthousiast over de nieuwe GPU, maar, zoals we al eerder hebben gezien, bleek hij beperkt te worden door zijn geheugen:

However, we can't leave out its serious drawback: slow 166MHz DDR memory, which serves as a brake for the entire graphics subsystem. In fact, we may hope to see new NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS with faster memory, but now we cannot promise anything definite. And in the meanwhile we can state that in 32bit color mode this card hardly managed to make a significant break-through compared to GeForce256 DDR. Nevertheless, the performance gain is undeniable and quite tangible, actually. Of course, the gaming performance has also risen: you may even feel at home at 1280x1024x32 in some cases.[break]Verder had iXBT geen goed woord over voor FSAA:[/break]As for Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing, NVIDIA made a blunder here. We don't want to discuss all the details of this failure hoping that NVIDIA will keep its word and improve the situation in the next driver version. When we will review mass graphics pieces made on NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS we will return to this problem. However, we have to admit that today's FSAA may be regarded as total absence of this function, because it will hardly be a worthy thing with the performance reduction it causes (except the resolution equal to 640x480).
