Panasonic komt met een leuk hebbedingetje, de SV-SD70, een horloge waar je een SD geheugen kaartje in kan stoppen zodat je 64 MB op je horloge hebt zitten voor wat leuke audio bestanden :

Panasonic brengt in juni een nogal in het oog springend horloge op de markt, de SV-SD70. De letters 'SD' staan voor Secure Digital, de techniek waarmee Panasonic hoopt te concurreren met Sony's Memory Stick. De SV-SD70 is - naast horloge - ook een audio-speler. Muziek kan via internet in de SV-SD70 worden geladen. Momenteel is de maximale grootte van SD-schijfjes 64 MB. Het horloge is behoorlijk prijzig: in Japan kost het ruim 49.000 Yen. Omgerekend komt dat neer op ruim 1000 harde guldens.

Uit een onderzoek van PC Magazine en het Tros consumentenprogramma Radar is gebleken dat gratis en betaalde internet providers qua snelheid en service nauwelijks voor elkaar onder doen. Van de 10 onderzochte ISP's werden XS4All en MyWeb als beste bevonden:

De onderzoekers vinden het opvallend dat de vijf grote gratis providers (Noknok, Zon, Wanadoo, Freeler en Myweb) gemiddeld even goed scoren als de vijf grote betaalde aanbieders (World Online, Planet Internet, Euronet, Compuserve en Xs4All).

Xs4All (betaald, 30 gulden per maand) en Myweb (gratis) komen uit de studie als als beste naar voren. Zowel overdag als 's avonds zijn bij beide de webpagina's snel oproepbaar. Ook de hulpdiensten van de twee providers zijn snel beschikbaar en vakkundig.

Nospam schrijft dat Release Candidate 2 van PHP4 is uitgebracht. De final van PHP4 stond oorspronkelijk gepland voor april, maar blijkbaar waren er nog enkele onvoorziene problemen waardoor deze release date niet gehaald kon worden. Het is de bedoeling dat RC2 de laatste beta is voor de officiële release van PHP4:

HardwareCentral wierp een kritische blik op de performance van nVidia's GeForce2 GTS chip. Zoals we al eerder hebben gehoord is de snelheid ten opzichte van de GeForce DDR meestal vrij gering vanwege de geheugen bottleneck waar de GeForce nog steeds mee kampt. Er werd verder ook gekeken naar AGP 4x performance en CPU schaling van de kaart. Hier een hap uit de conclusie voor je, lees hier de rest.

So what do all these tests mean? Though the GeForce2 GTS is extremely impressive on paper, the real-world benchmarks disappoint such high expectations. The GeForce2 theoretically has 3 times the fill-rate and nearly 2 times the T&L performance of the original GeForce, but in real world benchmarks prove the difference in performance is very slight. In our tests, we also showed that memory bandwidth is still a major issue with the GeForce2. The fastest memory currently on the market is still not fast enough to satisfy the fill-rate high resolutions. However, as 200MHz DDR memory starts to hit the market, you will most likely see board vendors putting them on the GeForce2 boards.

But in the end, there is really no question as to whether the GeForce2 GTS is the fastest card on the market. Even before it's release, NVidia held the performance crown. By releasing the GeForce2 GTS, NVidia did nothing but trump itself. Other companies may claim they have a better card, but NVidia is the only company that has been able to ship the product and have them on store shelves.

If you already have a GeForce card, especially DDR, we recommend you keep your card and wait for either the ATI Radeon 256 to come out this summer or wait for NVidia's next chip due out later this out. Though the GeForce2 GTS is only slightly faster than the GeForce DDR, if you want the fastest card on the market, look no further.

The Ghost schrijft dat Bill Gates wachtwoorden de zwakke schakel vindt in netbeveiliging (En hij kan het weten... ), hij pleit daarom voor het gebruik van smartcards om het internet wat veilig te maken:

In een toespraak op de Networld/Interop conferentie in Las Vegas sprak Gates over de beveiligingsmogelijkheden van Windows 2000. Hij demonstreerde digitale certificaten, IPSec security en Kerberos. Het gebruik van wachtwoorden is volgens Gates ongewenst. Hij riep de industrie op over te stappen op smartcards voor gebruikersverificatie.

"We moeten af van wachtwoorden als de overheersende manier van beveiligen", zei Gates. "Het zal een grote mijlpaal zijn als alle gebruikersverificatie plaatsvindt met smartcards."

Voor veel webdiensten op internet worden wachtwoorden gebruikt. Ook online banken en effectenhuizen gebruiken deze vorm van beveiliging. Volgens Gates dreigt altijd het gevaar dat dieven het wachtwoord los krijgen door bijvoorbeeld naar de bank te bellen. Smartcards zijn dan veiliger.

ortep schrijft als eerste dat er weer een lek gevonden is in Hotmail, met een klein truukje is het mogelijk de inlog cookie te onderscheppen wat de mogelijkheid geeft om mailtjes te zenden en verwijderen zolang de echte gebruiker ook ingelogt is :

But Haselton said that five minutes would be long enough for a hacker with a prepared script to download all of a user's e-mail messages.

The trick uses JavaScript to send the cookie. Hotmail filters JavaScript in regular e-mail messages but doesn't filter JavaScript in HTML attachments.

"It's not a trivial bug that has to do with formatting; it's the essential nature of the software," Haselton said. "Hotmail is what all the big hunters set their sights on. ... Most of the free e-mail services can be broken into, and you find a new way to do it every three weeks or so. But it's really scary that hobbyists are the ones who are doing this."

Along with being a hardcore gamer I also work as a Multimedia Designer and 3D Artist. So along with the usual list of 2D graphic applications, I do a ton of work in 3D Studio MAX. The system I work on is an aging Intergraph system running dual PII 300Mhz CPU's and an older Intense 3D video card with 16MB of memory. Now of course this is old technology, but at its prime it was a very slick setup. The video card alone was very high-end and produced the kind of results most artist and developers needed and only for a mere 3 or 4 thousand dollars at the time. So when I plugged in the Gloria II on my home system, I wasn't sure how much faster it would be or what kind of difference to expect in comparison to the card at work. In the past I had tried other video cards at home that would seem to keep up with 3D Studio MAX at first, but after reaching certain low poly counts in my models the card would choke. So based on what I knew about the Gloria II, I figured it would probably hold up in 3D and even perform a little faster. But when I put it to the test, I literally dropped my lower jaw wide open! After a few minutes of total amazement and pure exhilaration, I had to remind myself to close my mouth because it was drying up fast! The amount of smoothness while manipulating models inside 3DSMAX was outstanding. It was literally blowing away what my system at work could only dream of.

In dit bericht van het AP is te lezen dat deze man al veel eerder een virus heeft gemaakt dat de basis zou kunnen zijn van het ILOVEYOU-virus. Er is een kans dat hij het virus verder heeft uitgewerkt. In ieder geval wordt hij nu vermist:

The student, Onel A. de Guzman, is missing. He lives in the same apartment as Reonel Ramones, a bank employee who was arrested on Monday on suspicion of involvement with the virus, but was later released because of a lack of evidence.

The software program, written as a thesis project at AMA Computer College in Manila, was rejected on Feb. 24, with a thesis reviewer at the school noting ``This is illegal'' and ``We do not produce burglars.''

The PC Digital WebCam is a high-quality webcam that produces great on-screen pictures. It's easy to install. It is also easy to reliably move the camera from place to place. Focus adjustment is smooth and precise, especially in comparison with the Intel camera; however I believe that the 3Com camera will appeal to a different market segment.

If you are looking for a serious Webcam for use with video streaming, full-time video monitoring, or if superior quality images are paramount, I think that you will be pleased with this camera. If you are looking for a family netcam to send e-mails and create home movies with then this is probably not the camera for you, simply because the software included falls far short of the software bundled with the Intel camera.

Intel heeft tegenover EETimes nogmaals bevestigd dat DDR support geen onderdeel uit maakt van de Willamette roadmap. Tevens gaf Intel te kennen dat er geen plannen zijn voor een SDRAM Memory Translator Hub, waarover afgelopen week door EBN Online gespeculeerd werd. In hoeverre we deze uitspraken van Intel serieus mogen nemen valt natuurlijk te betwijfelen. Vorig jaar werd ook op het laatste moment besloten om de oorspronkelijk Rambus-only i820 chipset geschikt te maken voor SDRAM:

Reiterating Intel's dedication to RDRAM, Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of the company's chip set group, said, "From a technical point of view, RDRAM is absolutely the best solution." While PC OEMs have started to ask memory vendors to provide double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAM to increase system performance at prices lower than for RDRAM, Intel's new processor will only work with RDRAM. "My road map does not include any DDR," said Burns.

Bij Overclockers Workbench is een korte review te vinden van de K7V, het KX133 moederbord van Asus. Zij zijn niet zo enthousiast over de overclock-mogelijkheden van dit bordje, wel over de snelheid en stabiliteit:

During our overclocking tests, the ASUS K7V failed terribly. It did not even make above 105Mhz at all.
This seems to be the same as the ASUS K7M. Would it be due to the cache divider or could it be the clock generator ?

The ASUS K7V seems to be a good performer. I particularly like the FSB tweaking within the AMI BIOS at 2 Mhz intervals. Voltage can be set from 1.3v to 2.05v.

In general, a well built board which did not overclock well. There aren't any problems so far during the test.

a monitor acts much like a normal television set in that it uses a CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube, to create images. A CRT is essentially a glass vacuum tube that contains an electronic screen lined with a phosphorous material. An electron gun, located at the rear of the monitor, disperses a stream of electrons across the screen. When the electrons hit the screen, it causes the phosphorous to glow, creating a certain color.

The electron gun is actually comprised of three electron guns that control the display of three key colors: red, green, and blue. The surface of the CRT screen places each color, consisting of tiny dots, in a specific pattern. Each group of red, green, and blue dots make up a pixel. The intensity of each color, when placed in the pattern, allows for the entire color spectrum to be displayed.

Pentium North Bridges

The most successful VIA's Apollo Pro 133A will be replaced by Apollo Pro266 (mass production - Q3) and Apollo PX266 (samples - Q4). The first one is a next generation mainstream chipset with DDR266 support, NB/SB bandwidth 266MB/s (V-Link), etc. The second one, PX266, is a solution for workstation, multi-processor server and high-end desktop - the first VIA's high-end chipset. It features up to 4 CPUs support and dual V-Links.

Of course, VIA has its integrated solutions for Pentium based systems - PM133, PL133, and PM266 with Savage4 graphics core. PL133 is a newly added chipset - it is pin-to-pin compatible with PM133 and is a light version of PM133. It has no external AGP port support feature. PL133 is sampling this month, PM 266 will appear in Q4 along with Pro266 chipset.

Athlon North Bridges

KX133 will be replaced by KZ133 and KX266 (sampling May and August respectively). KX266 is almost the same as Pro266 chipset but features (of course) 266MHz EV6 bus. KZ133 will have its integrated versions - KM133 and KL133 (without external AGP), and KX266 - KM266 (sampling in May and January respectively).

South Bridges

686A will be replaced by VT8231 with PCI-LPC, ATA100 support, integrated Ethernet and HomePHA controllers. In September VT82C686B (pin-to-pin compatible with 686A) with dual-channel ATA100 controller will be available.
596B will be replaced by VT8233 with V-Link support, high performance AC'97 sound, Ethernet and HomePNA controllers, 6 USB ports and ATA100 support.

Bij Gamers Depot heeft men een artikel geschreven over de toekomst van spellen onder MacOS X. Er wordt onder anderen gesproken over de nieuwe API's van Apple:

Within the architecture of Mac OS X, graphics are addressed as one of the basic blocks of the structure. Apple has dropped their own in-house developed 3D graphics API, QuickDraw 3D RAVE, in favor of the more universally supported OpenGL. The adoption of this standard is one of the reasons John Carmack of ID is now a supporter of Mac OS X. OpenGL, being built into the operating system instead of being an add-on as it is in the current Mac OS, provides solid support for future 3D gaming and gives credence to the Mac OS as a viable gaming platform.

The new way of displaying 2D graphics in Mac OS is called "Quartz". This is based on Display PDF, changed from Display PostScript in earlier developer's releases. Display PDF is an open, unlicensed standard with better benefits than Display PostScript, and does without the licensing payments to Adobe Systems. Display PDF allows 2D graphics to be infinitely scalable, without getting the "jaggies" like current bitmap graphics do. You will be able to magnify a graphic element as much as you want without losing the image quality of the original, rotate an element freely, and change it's transparency level. By making all 2D graphic elements based on vectors instead of bitmaps, Mac OS X will make 2D animation more versatile and esthetically pleasing inside a game that doesn't use 3D graphics.[break]Verder wordt het gerucht gelanceerd dat John Carmack bezig is aan een eigen versie van het nieuwe MacOS, speciaal voor games:[/break]Even the core of the OS itself (called Darwin) is available through open-source agreements for use in the development of other operating systems. Again, John Carmack is all over this as well: he has licensed Darwin from Apple and is developing his own operating system around it, rumored to be one especially for gamers.

Microsoft heeft een brief geschreven aan het Amerikaanse congres waarin zij schrijven dat de voorgestelde opsplitsing van MS toch echt niet kan. Volgens Microsoft zou deze opsplitsing er voor zorgen dat tien jaar lang belangrijke nieuwe mogelijkheden niet kunnen worden toegevoegd aan Windows. Bovendien zouden enkele producten van Microsoft buitenboord vallen:

"The DOJ plan outlaws an innovative Microsoft product, Microsoft BackOffice, by assigning parts of the product to the OS Co. and part to the Apps. Co.," the letter said. The company also said the "DOJ plan appears to prohibit the development of exciting new products now under development at Microsoft, such as new versions of Web TV, the X-Box game console."

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker added that "the regulations relate to products, markets and issues that were not involved in the DOJ's lawsuit against Microsoft."
