Tsja... het gaat goed met Vinden.nl , eerst wil altavista iets doen aan 'plagiaat' en daarna komt Ilse ook nog eens op hun dak vallen met de mededeling: Wij slepen jullie voor de Reclame Code Commissie:

De commissie behandelt de zaak op 26 mei. "We hebben de klacht ingediend, omdat er gespot wordt met onze merknaam", stelt algemeen directeur en oprichter van Ilse, M. ten Houten. De gewraakte radioreclame begint met de uitroep "Hé, hallo, met Ilse!" Waarop een aarzelende mannenstem reageert met: "Eh, weet je wat, ik ga wel naar Vinden.NL."

[...] Bij Radio 538 is de reclame nooit de lucht ingegaan. "We hebben de spot geweigerd, omdat hij niet fatsoenlijk was. Er werd een concurrent afgezeken", zegt een woordvoerder, die meent dat Vinden.NL op publiciteit uit was. "Geen betere publiciteit dan een rel."

Altavista.nl vindt de nieuwe layout van vinden.nl niet al te leuk, ze claimen dat vinden.nl plagiaat heeft gepleegt en daarom hebben ze maar een advocaat ingeschakeld:

De jurist onderzoekt welke mogelijkheden er zijn om Vinden.nl te dwingen haar site aan te passen. Want de nieuwe look, sinds een paar weken online, heeft wel erg veel weg van de opmaak van AltaVista.nl. Ook de opzet van rubrieken lijkt gekopieerd.

"We inventariseren de juridische mogelijkheden", aldus zegsman Joost Broeren van AltaVista Nederland. "Vinden.nl vertoont erg veel gelijkenis. Het is een gebrek aan creativiteit. De gebruiker ziet zo dat het gepikt is."

Het juridisch onderzoek is volgens Broeren vlak na de lancering van de nieuwe Vinden.nl gestart. Deze week of begin volgende week wordt besloten of er actie wordt ondernomen.

De mensen achter Vinden.nl hanteerden al eerder de knip- en plakfunctie van Windows. Zo werd bij een eerdere versie van de zoeksite een plaatje gebruikt dat was gekopieerd van Vindex, evenals WebWereld een uitgave van IDG Communications.

Tom heeft drie GeForce2 kaartjes met elkaar vergeleken, de AOpen PA256 Pro, de Leadtek WinFast GeForce2 GTS en de Elsa Gladiac. De Leadtek kaart bleek het beste te zijn, wat te danken was aan 1 feit: er zit een lekker grote heatsink & fan opgeplakt (wat eigenlijk niet nuttig is als je de laatste quote leest... ):

The Leadtek WFGF2 with its massive heat sink, solid overclocking performance, DVD software, video-out and good price make it a tough card to beat. Bij GA-Hardware is een review te vinden van de overbekende 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP. De kaart komt zeer goed uit de benchmarks en de FSAA is volgens deze review heel goed. De beeldkwaliteit met 80x600 FSAA was beter dan die van 1024x768 zonder FSAA. 2x FSAA heeft bovendien weinig invloed op de snelheid van de kaart.

Well, 3dfx definitely managed to implement FSAA well. I must say that their 2x mode looked great in everything I tried. There is a 4x mode as well, but it added significant extra performance impact, without adding much more visual quality (a little though, but not a whole lot). Also (although not present in any games as of yet) the V5 adds the range of T-Buffer effects including motion blur and soft shadows, as well as FXT1 texture compression. The V5 allows for some spectacular visuals, largely by means of FSAA.

So how well did 3dfx do with the V5? I think they are definitely filling a need in the market. Although I wish it had added T&L support as well, the quality of the FSAA more than makes up for the lack. Right now the only game I own that has support at all for T&L is Soldier of Fortune, and it looks as good without T&L as with, and isn't noticeably slower with it off. After all, the game developers have spent the last 5 years doing software T&L, and have optimized it heavily.

Ook bij Tech Extreme is nu een review te vinden van de nieuwe Asus V7700 GeForce 2 GTS. Over het algemeen zijn zij wel positief over de kaart. De nieuwe GeForce is natuurlijk erg snel, volgens Tech Extreme ook in vergelijking met de Voodoo5:

Lets recap just a bit. Both 3dfx and Asus now offer FSAA in their video cards. 3dfx's runs fine in almost every game out there, whereas Asus' FSAA can only be enabled in OpenGL. Asus, on the other hand, has much higher 3DMark scores than 3dfx and without enabling FSAA, the image quality is given to Asus. Quite simply, the Asus board is faster than the V5.

Veel mensen schijnen FSAA toch ook heel belanrijk te vinden - met de drivers die deze reviewer gebruikte kon hij alleen FSAA gebruiken onder OpenGL. De reviewer concludeert dat er meer spellen zijn voor de voodoo5 die van de techniek gebruik maken. Dit lijkt mij incorrect; in de nieuwste gelekte nVidia Detonator drivers is het ook mogelijk om FSAA onder D3D te gebruiken, het werkt alleen nog niet perfect. Dit wordt waarschijnlijk binnenkort opgelost. Blijft natuurlijk dat 3dfx echte hardware 4x FSAA doet... de strijd is nog lang niet gelopen...

Sony heeft besloten zich nu ook op de video-editors op desktop-gebied te richten, lees ik in dit persbericht op Yahoo!Finance. De merknaam VAIO (Video Audio Integrated Operation) werd al gebruikt bij de Sony notebooks en nu dus ook bij de nieuwe desktops. De VAIO Digital Studio's zijn beschikbaar vanaf juni en bezitten allemaal twee iLink (FireWire / IEEE1394) poorten. De machines draaien op Pentium III's van 650MHz tot 866MHz. Sony levert bij de computer het pakket MovieShaker om makkelijk video te editen:

Supplied MovieShaker software simplifies the home-movie making process into three easy steps: First, using one of the two built-in i.LINK® (IEEE-1394) ports, users transfer the video or still image from their i.LINK equipped digital camcorder into the PC. Begint wel een beetje te lijken op de iMac DV. Maar ja, het is goed dat ook iemand op PC-gebied dit doet. Over het design van de VAIO heb ik nog niets gelezen, maar Sony kennende zal er wel iets moois uitkomen met vooral veel zilvergrijs...

Bij Riva 3D zijn ze de eerste met een review van de Asus V7700 GeForce2 GTS videokaart. De kaart is net als Elsa's Gladiac hetzelfde als het nVidia reference design, alhoewel er wel een grotere fan werd gebruikt. Hieronder een stuk uit de conclusie:

So far, the V7700 looks pretty damned good. It's definitely faster than the NVIDIA reference card, and has so far posted the best 3DMark2000 scores of any card I've ever tested.
And the fact that it runs quite stable on older Athlon motherboards with the AMD 751 chipset definitely scores huge points as far as a lot of us are concerned.

Factor in the irreplaceable Smart Doctor card monitoring software and an OK, if uninspired, software bundle, and I can definitely recommend the V7700 and guarantee you that you'll be more than satisfied if you pick one of these babies up.

I cannot definitively say that the ASUS V7700 is going to beat ALL the competition's GeForce 2 offerings, because I haven't yet tested them all. But if the past is any indication, the ASUS V7700 D with video in/out and stereo glasses will definitely be the most feature rich, desireable of all the GeForce 2 cards to hit the market.

Bij Dan's Data hebben ze een review gemaakt van de Senfu Watercooler Unit, een prima dingetje wat volgens mij 1 voordeel heeft en 2 nadelen: iedereen kan het gebruiken maar het is wel duur en het pompje wat er bij zit is gewoon slecht:

In dit nieuwsbericht is te lezen dat Oracle een nieuwe Internetcomputer heeft aangekondigd voor de extreem lage prijs van $199. Het apparaat heeft geen harde schijf. In de 'NIC' zitten op zich nog best hoogwaardige onderdelen:

The machine has a 266-megahertz microprocessor, 64 megabytes of memory, a 56K modem and 24-times CD-ROM drive. Monitors are not included, although Oracle's philanthropic arm will give away monitors to schools, Smith said.

Dat het kan voor die prijs. Het systeem draait (zoals te verwachten) op een versie van Linux. Oracle heeft al eens eerder geprobeerd een 'NIC' uit te brengen voor $500, maar dat is toen flink mislukt. Volgens Oracle lag dat aan de toenmalige monopoliepositie van Microsoft (alsof die er nu niet meer is).

Hè? Wat? Microsoft wint een rechtszaak? Jaahaa, dat kan ook nog! Het was even twijfelen wat het nieuws nou was: 'MS wint rechtszaak Sun' of 'MS wint rechtszaak'...
Sun had de rechtszaak aangespannen tegen Microsoft omdat deze een versie van de Java-technologie had gemaakt die alleen onder Windows werkte (programma's gemaakt met Visual J++). De reden voor de winst:

The language and structure of the Technology Distribution and License Agreement suggest that the compatibility obligations are separate covenants and not conditions of, or restrictions on, the license grants.[break]Maar nog niet alle problemen zijn weg:[/break]``The ruling supports Microsoft's position that this is really just a contract dispute between two large and sophisticated companies and not some sort of copyright case,'' he said. ``There are still a number of other issues yet to be resolved in this case.''

Er wordt in het artikel erg positief gesproken over de 3dfx Voodoo5:

Bij Tresh's FiringSquad hebben ze twee Pentium III's van de nieuwe cB0 stepping te pakken gekregen en besloten te kijken hoe goed deze is te overclocken. In dit artikel zetten zij hun resultaten uiteen. Deze zijn zeer wisselend: de eerste P3 600E bleek maximaal 672MHz (112MHz FSB) te halen. Bij de tweede ging het een stuk beter: deze kwam stabiel op 858MHz (143MHz! FSB).

Saddened by the results of the first overclocking attempt, we moved on to the second processor. We're glad to tell you that the second processor performed much better than the first. We were able to get the chip up to a healthy 858MHz with an astounding 143MHz FSB. The system wasn't quite stable at 870MHz, and after a little testing with a faster CPU we determined that the video card wasn't the problem -the CPU had reached its limits. We were worried that our GeForce DDR wouldn't be able to handle the overclocked AGP bus, but the card held up admirably at 95MHz (143MHz FSB x 2/3 AGP).[break]Volgens FiringSquad kun je beter nog even wachten met het kopen van en P3:[/break]We suspect that we won't see many good overclocking chips in the 600-650 speed range until Intel is able to overcome the high speed P3 shortage. It'll be time to buy with an intent to overclock when the 1GHz chips start appearing in the aftermarket. By that time, P3 yields should be high enough to supply a steady stream of good, overclockable 600s and 650s. We're pretty impatient over here, so we'll have periodic P3-600E and P3-650E overclocking tests even if we don't see 1GHz CPUs floating around.

Geweldig optie voor overklokkers, die ook gelijk het programmaatje van H. Oda overbodig maakt..

Naast dit bios heeft Abit ook nog een nieuw RU beta bios voor de BP6 op hun ftp gezet. Wat er veranderd is sinds het vorige bios is niet bekend.

GamePC maakt ons blij met een review van de 16 speed IDE DVD drive van Pioneer. Hieronder wat info over de performance van het ding:

Under the synthetic benchmarks, the 16x drive posted numbers beating the 6x by a fairly big margin. Under ZD's CD Winbench, the 16x DVD drive had about a thirteen-percent increase of performance over the 6x DVD drive. Under CD Tach 98, the 16x posted a drive rating of 30.4x which is by far the fastest rating we have seen on any DVD-ROM drive. CPU utilization wise, the 16x drive again posted really good numbers. At full speed (40x), the 16x drive had a seven-percent CPU utilization rating while the 6x DVD had a nineteen-percent CPU utilization rating when running at full speed (32x). Now looking at our homemade tests, we see that audio extraction was pretty good with this drive. On both first and last tracks, the drive was able to extract at a stable 12x. It took about 16 seconds to extract the first track and about 18 seconds for the last track. With the 6x drive, it took a little over 2 more seconds to extract both tracks, which was caused by the fluctuating extraction rates that ranged from 6x to 13x. As for the DVD tests, we did everything we could to make it stutter but were unsuccessful. Randomly fast forwarding, rewinding, and chapter skipping during the movie did virtually nothing to show us that the drive was sweating.

We liked the drive for how it performed flawlessly throughout our stress tests. Comparing the numbers back to our Hitachi DVD drive review, it posted better numbers than what we got today. This brings us to the fact that the 16x drive is only as good as how you setup the rest of the system. Fine-tuning and system tweaking is needed to really get the most of any system. In terms of getting this drive for your own system there are some considerations to consider. One being "is quick DVD-ROM/CD-ROM access a major requirement in your computer usage"? Or, how well suited is your current system setup now? If you just have an average system like the one we have here today, the Hitachi 8x drive should still meet your needs and the most logical solution to go with. But if you have a totally decked out system, the 16x drive will come in handy with its super low CPU utilization ratings. [break]De drive is leverbaar in zowel een slot als tray versie:[/break]

Het verhaal dat Elsa voor de rechter zou zijn gesleept door nVidia vanwege het te vroeg uitbrengen van de Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 GTS kaart is niet waar.

No, this is not true. NVIDIA is very glad about the fact that only 4 days after the first initial GTS announcement GLADIAC boards from ELSA were available in the US.

No, this is not true. ELSA and NVIDIA are working together hand in hand. This good partnership enables ELSA to ship boards as early. There are no legal or commercial rules why it should be illegally to do a great job and to be first in the market.

Does the boards are not ELSA boards ?

ELSA has decided to use a reference board design by NVIDIA for its GLADIAC board. This is very usual and fits perfectly to the market strategy from NVIDIA. There is no issue with this decision and no reason for customers to be disappointed. As the consumer graphics market is very fast nearly all players in the market are using boards with a reference design. ELSAŽs unique features are based on itŽs software and driver know how.

Eric van Ballegoie, bekend van Fast Graphics, heeft zijn uitgebreide GeForce2 GTS review online geparkeerd. Eric heeft er zeer veel benchmarks mee gedraaid; van een Celeron 300A tot en met een Athlon 700 en een Dyme P3-866 systeem. Onlang werd bekend dat KX133 moederborden niet gebruikt kunnen worden om Slot-A Thunderbird proc's op te prikken, dit vanwege verschillen in timing toleranties. PC Rave meldt nu echter dat Abit bezig is met een BIOS update waarna de KA7 mogelijk wel in staat zal zijn om met Thunderbirds overweg te kunnen:

I just talked with Eric B. over at Abit. The issue of the Thunderbird and Spitfire not working on KX133 motherboards is definitely an issue, and Abit acknowledges that this is definitely a road block for the Abit KA7. However according to Eric, Abit is working on a BIOS upgrade for the Abit KA7 and quote, "a BIOS upgrade will solve this problem and [our] BIOS team is working on that right now." For Abit KA7 owners, this isn't a firm commitment from Abit, but rather a sign of hope for a potential upgrade path.

This is a definite departure from AMD's plan to leave the Slot A EV6 architecture and quickly transition to the Socket A architecture. There will undoubtably be more motherboard manufacturers coming out with BIOS upgrades to support the Slot A Thunderbird CPUs.

ZDNet heeft een artikel gepost waarin ze melden dat Intel van plan is om de Willamette 'Pentium IV' processor in het derde kwartaal zeer snel te introduceren op 1.4GHz, maar er staat ook een 1.3GHz versie gepland. Begin 2001 zal er een 1.5GHz worden gereleased waarna de Willamette zoals bekend ook mainstream zal gaan. Tot die tijd zal de huidige Pentium III nog gewoon blijven bestaan, er worden nog 1066 en 1133MHz versies verwacht.

Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) officials have confirmed that the chip will debut at 1.4GHz in the second half of this year. However, Intel will also deliver chips at clock rates below that speed. Intel, sources said, plans to offer a 1.3GHz version, along with the 1.4GHz clock speed, starting in the fourth quarter.

This means the company will have three clock-speed variants of the chip available by the first quarter of 2001. By then, Intel expects the lower-speed Willamette chips will begin to penetrate the mainstream PC market.

3dfx: When we've been called out for missing schedules and missing real features it's been totally fair. We hold ourselves to a high standard and we want the public to do the same. Sometimes we've had trouble getting our message across (dare I mention 22-bit effective rendering quality in the Voodoo3?) but that's part of the game. Since we're held to a reasonable and high standard I'd really like to see people start asking the tough questions about nVidia's track record on meeting their pre-release specs. I remember when they announced the TNT and it was supposed to be 125MHz: it was 90. The TNT2-ultra was supposed to be 175/200MHz, it was 150/183. There were supposed to be 30 T&L titles by last Christmas and there was one. They are trying to fool the consumer into positioning GF2 as this killer shader product, but the reality is that it has no new texture/color combine features as compared to the original GeForce! The GeForce2 GTS is supposed to have 3X the performance of the GeForce and it doesn't come close. I'd love to hear their explanation for all of this. You know, if you plot when nVidia actually does release something that meets their claims they're off by 1-2 years. Look at when they did hit 125 MHz compared to when they said they would. Let's see how long it takes them to ship a product that really is 3X faster than GeForce... the clock is ticking.

The easiest way to see the increase in T&L power is to take a test that STRESSES T&L, like tree, and run it on both systems. Bottom Line: the core clock boost alone ( 120 to 200 ) gives you a tremendous boost in T&L power.

The best thing that nV News and others can do is test the claims that everybody makes. Is the T&L better and what is the best way to measure that? Is Anti-Aliasing worth it? Does FSAA help me play the game, is it a feature or a real benefit?

I am sure you will agree that the situation for owners of Athlon-platforms with VIA's Apollo KX133 chipset that want to run Windows2000 is still very far from ideal. What we all should expect is a flawless and painless installation under Windows2000 that doesn't require any tricks to enable the AGP. In plain English this means that VIA has got to supply a Win2k AGP driver installation software for KX133 instead of falsely claiming that KX133-support is already built into Windows2000. Throwing in a STABLE AGP-driver as well would give this procedure an even nicer touch ...

Marilyn Hall Patel, de president van de rechtbank in Northern California, verwierp enkele argumenten van Napster in de verdediging tegen een zaak die is aangespannen door de muziekmaatschappijen, in de VS verenigd in de Record Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Het belangrijkste argument van Napster, dat ze slechts een systeem is dat uitwisseling facilieert, is verworpen. Volgens Napster is ze niet meer dan een PTT van de muziekuitwisseling en ook telefoniemaatschappijen worden niet beoordeeld op de inhoud van de boodschappen over het netwerk.

Volgens de rechter facilieert Napster illegale uitwisseling en weet dit ook. Bovendien doet Napster er vervolgens te weinig aan om illegale distributie te stoppen.

Het definitieve vonnis volgt over 2 maanden.

Dean Kent van Real World Technologies heeft in zijn maandelijkse industry update (bedankt voor de link, DiGiSTORM) weer allerlei interessante dingen te melden over chipsets, cpu's en geheugen.
Het meest opvallende nieuws is wel dat het er op lijkt dat Intel weer Pentium III's gaat shippen die gebaseerd zijn op de verouderde Katmai core:

What has to be the most interesting bit of news for this month is the reports that Intel will begin shipping Katmai processors in volume once again. Yes, I am talking about Slot 1 Pentium III 550, 600 and (perhaps) 650MHz processors in quantity. One manufacturer told me that Intel notified them last week that as much as 60% of all shipments will be comprised of these processors until at least September.

The reason given is that the FC-PGA packaging is still a major problem that has forced Intel to push out their higher speed Celerons, and has prevented higher speed Coppermine Pentium IIIs from being made available in quantity.
