Na al die GeForce2 reviews is het wel weer leuk om weer eens iets anders te lezen: Tech Extreme heeft een review gemaakt van de Voodoo5 5500, de "competitie" voor de GeForce2:

3dfx is in trouble. Haven't we all heard that one before? Regardless of what this company says or does, someone always finds a way to pick on them. Sure, a lot of people may very well have grounds for arguing against 3dfx's tactics and products, it's simply the nature of the business. However, when it all comes down to it, 3dfx candidly provides for a sheer performance product. With the recent race towards video card bliss, 3dfx has entered several new contenders to the arena. Powered by the VSA-100 graphics processors, the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 line of video cards are 3dfx's latest weapon in the 3D Wars. We have recently gotten our hands on a Beta version of the Voodoo5 5500 AGP, 3dfx's prime-time video card in the entire family (yeah, the 6K is bigger, but this one supposedly gives the most bang for your buck). Now, without any further ado, lets take a look at the board...

[...] In all honesty, if 3dfx released this card a month ago, they would have a sure winner on their hands. Yet, due to delays, this may not be a good run for them. NVIDIA has already released its Ge Force 2, which includes FSAA (no more claim to fame for 3dfx's debut) and has an actual board on the shelves right now. Sure, there won't be any cinema effects, but once again, that's like T&L in the respect that a game developer must implement it into the game. Whether or not it's going to be popular is yet to be seen, but T&L has already shown a small trend.

Eric meldt dat ze bij Computer!Totaal een review hebben gemaakt van de Elsa Gladiac. Ze hebben geen schokkende informatie maar wel een stapel leuke benchmarks waar je goed kan zien hoe belangrijk je CPU is en hoeveel je hebt (of niet hebt) aan T&L :

Laten we beginnen met de 3DMark 2000 resultaten. 3DMark is een zeer interessante benchmark voor processor schaling. De benchmark laat namelijk kiezen of de T&L berekeningen door de processor (CPU) of door de grafische chipset (Hardware) gedaan moeten worden. Hierdoor is goed te zien hoeveel verschil het maakt wanneer de grafische kaart de T&L voor zijn rekening neemt en daarmee de processor ontlast.

Wat duidelijk opvalt is dat de T&L unit bij de snellere systemen alleen nut heeft in de lagere resoluties. De processor heeft het dan zo druk dat T&L erbij een tikkeltje te veel wordt en de resultaten dalen wanneer de processor ook dit voor zijn rekening moet nemen. In de hogere resoluties is de grafische kaart echter de limiterende factor en heeft de processor tijd 'over'. Wanneer de T&L nu door de processor wordt gedaan ontlast dat de grafische kaart waardoor de prestatie stijgen.

Bij de langzamere processoren is dit echter niet het geval. Bij de resultaten van de Pentium II 400 en de Celeron 300a ziet u dat T&L door de grafische kaart altijd sneller is dan T&L door de processor. Op een langzamer systeem levert de hardwarematige T&L versnelling procentueel veel meer winst dan bij een sneller systeem. Toch zakken de scores duidelijk naar mate de processor langzamer wordt. Heeft u een langzaam systeem, dan kan een kaart met hardwarematige T&L veel winst leveren, maar is het de vraag of de upgrade het geld waard is.

Die upgrade is zijn geld wel waard (ik heb het gedaan), voor een verdubbeling in peformance moet je toch wel ergens een goedkope GeForce SDR kunnen vinden .

HardwareCentral heeft een interessant artikel geschreven over Rambus RDRAM geheugen - hoe het werkt, wat de voordelen zijn, wat de nadelen zijn. Het RDRAM geheugen kwam erg goed uit de testen van HardwareCentral. Volgens hen zijn er veel voordelen en zal de prijs ook nog wel omlaaggaan:

Basically, we just have to wait a year or two. If RDRAM falls in price and becomes mainstream, we'll do a bunch of comparisons. If not, we can always find more video cards to review and CPUs to overclock. It's unfortunate that RDRAM supplies weren't ready for the 820 release, but launching a new memory standard isn't a very common event (let's see you get seven different DRAM manufacturers to start production in unison).

Bij CNET.com is te lezen dat Dell één van de goedkoopste computers met Rambus-geheugen op de markt brengt. De OptiPlex GX200 is te koop vanaf 'slechts' $1149. Dit blijkt ongeveer even duur te zijn als de OptiPlex systemen met normaal SDRAM geheugen. Wordt het dan toch nog iets met Rambus?

The company today will introduce the OptiPlex GX 200, a business desktop that features Pentium III processors and Rambus memory. Starting at $1,149, the new OptiPlex will be one of the least expensive Rambus-based PCs on the market.

Dell's Web site reveals that these Rambus-based systems will be about the same price as OptiPlex computers using ordinary, and typically less expensive, memory chips. [break]Maar voorlopig is Rambus alleen goedkoop bij Dell:[/break]Dell remains the largest proponent of Rambus in the PC market. The company historically has been more enthusiastic than the other big PC makers about pushing Rambus.

Riva 3D heeft na het bekend worden van het feit dat AGP 2x niet helemaal goed gaat werken op een plankje met de Irongate chipset en de GeForce2 een paar benchmarks gedraaid om te zien hoeveel snelheid dit kost:

After discovering that the GeForce 2 also had problems with the AMD 751 problem, I decided to put things to the test and see how much of a performance drop we should expect to see by comparing 1x and 2x settings in 3D Mark 2000 and Quake 3 Arena. These scores were posted by the same machine, containing an AMD Fester reference motherboard with the 751 chipset. I used the latest version of Powerstrip to switch between 1x and 2x mode, as the previous EnableIrongate2x DWORD registry key fix does not seem to work with the GeForce 2 cards. The results are quite interesting.

While most scores indicate a minor performance hit (around 5-7%), what's most shocking here is the results of the High Poly Count scores, which show that the GeForce 2 suffers a significant drop in performance in its 1x AGP 751 restriction, as much as 50%! And stability issues also cropped up, with certain games running flawlessly, while others locked up after a short period of time. This confirms NVIDIA's response to our initial inquiry into the Athlon/GeForce 2/AMD 751 chipset situation.

Het verlies in snelheid is dus niet schrikbarend groot, ongeveer 5% maar met veel polygonen (3DMark 2000) ging de peformance met wel 50% naar beneden!

Bij WebWereld valt te lezen dat de Filipijnse autoriteiten zijn binnengevallen bij de vermeende maakster van het I Love You-virus:

A federal grand jury has indicted 17 people for allegedly conspiring to infringe the copyright of more than 5,000 computer software programs that were available through a hidden Internet site.

Twelve of those indicted allegedly were members of an underground international group known as "Pirates with Attitudes" that disseminates stolen software, including programs not yet commercially available, the Justice Department said. These included a Microsoft Corp. employee who allegedly supplied company programs to the group members and to the Internet site.

The remaining five defendants were employees of Intel Corp., four of whom allegedly supplied computer hardware to the piracy organization in exchange for obtaining access for themselves and other Intel employees to the group's pirated software, which had a retail value of more than $1 billion, the statement said.

Bij The Register lees ik in dit nieuwsbericht dat het tóch mogelijk is om DVD's van allerlei regio's af te spelen op de PlayStation 2, óók met de nieuwe drivers. De manier om het te doen:

Bij PCTweaker is een vergelijking te vinden van de Alpha P7125 en de Globalwin VOS32 koelers. De koelers zijn getest op een Asus K7V moederbord met een Athlon 650@800. De Globalwin bleek er net iets beter uit te komen:

Well it was a very close battle, a lot closer than I was expecting. I thought the Alpha might have just nicked it with the help of the copper inlay, but the size of the VOS32 seemed to make the difference. Obviously a lot of how a heatsink performs is down the aluminium alloy mix it uses and it looks like Global Win have just got it right.
Another telling point is the cost, in the U.K. the VOS32 sells for around £25($38) and is very easy to find, if you want to get hold of the Alpha in the U.K. it means ordering from the State's and then adding shipping costs for an approximate total of £50($76).
So with it's reasonable price, excellent performance, availability and not to forget the versatility of being able to use it with an Athlon, P2 or P3 the Global Win VOS32 takes the crown.

The Alpha was a good opponent, but just not good enough!

Bij PC Hardware vond ik een review van de ons aller bekende KA7, het Slot A mobo van Abit gebaseerd op de VIA KX133 chipset. Dit bord is niet het snelste verkrijgbaar, maar heeft wel de meeste mogelijkheden (vooral op overclockgebied, natuurlijk).

I tried to overclock the CPUs on two different fronts: by increasing the FSB and by increasing the multiplier. Let me start with bad news: 118Mhz was unreachable for both our CPUs, although 117 Mhz was rock stable. I was not very surprised since all Athlon boards I know are not able to reach 118Mhz.

Abit successfully passed all my tests, being the most feature rich Athlon motherboard I have ever seen. It is not the ultimate performer, but in my opinion it is Abit's most stable motherboard ever. It is not cheap, but I am sure that it's worth every penny. There are no potential problems I should warn you and I fully recommend it to you.

kno1 schrijft: "Dit artikeltje kwam ik op slashdot tegen. In Australië schijnen Athlons op de markt te zijn gebracht waaraan geknoeid is." Ja, dat is niet zo leuk. Het artikel is trouwens vanwege grote interesse verplaatst naar Overclockers Workbench. Er worden Athlon 650's verkocht alsof het Athlon 700's zijn. Slechte zaak, slechte zaak...

Op dit plaatje is al te zien dat het om een Athlon 650 gaat (K7650).

[CoSD]Headbanger schrijft: "Op www.amdxtreme.com kwam ik een review van de BCM QS-754 tegen. Hij schijnt verbeterd te zijn t.o.v de QS-751, wat op zich al een goed bordje is. Wat ons tweakers wel interesseert is dat dit bordje goed overklokbaar is. Ook is er veel ruimte voor grote heatsinks ":

The QS-754 is the 2nd generation of Athlon mainboard from BCM. It looks like they took the good from the QS-751 and made it even better. You can tell that thought was put into the design of the QS-754. The layout and feature set of the board is excellent. This board would make a great base for a basic system and has the potential to be an overclocked powerhouse.

Opvallend is dat op dit Slot A moederbord weer de AMD 751 chipset wordt gebruikt, en niet de VIA KX133.

Nevyn schrijft dat ze bij Sharky Extreme de moeite hebben genomen om de FIC KA11 te reviewen, een mamaplankje gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset:

In the area of overclocking, the KA11 does not get high marks, and seems to do everything it can to hamper any sort of tweaking. The hardware DIP switches and jumpers are just the start, and you'll also have to contend with an AGP and PCI divider that's derived straight from the CPU. This is a huge negative, especially given that the Pentium III E processors are currently the overclocking chips of choice. Using a Slot I Coppermine E and the KA11, you'll find the 124 MHz FSB to be the highest overclock you can attain. If you move higher to the 133-150 MHz settings, the PC will refuse to boot. This even works in reverse, and a 100 MHz CPU cannot use the 66, 75 or 83 MHz FSB speeds. Even if you could use these FSB settings, the KA11 only features 10 different settings in all, hardly qualifying it as an overclocker's board.

[...] As you may have already ascertained, the FIC KA11 is not a board I would recommend to power users or overclockers. The features and overall design of the KA11 do not lend themselves well to tweaking or other types of performance enhancement. Then again, when using Intel processors at their default speed, the KA11 is a very stable motherboard and offers enough performance for general use. Tweakers should beware, but the low price of the KA11 makes it a good choice for the less demanding user.

Dit bordje mist een heleboel dingen die wij tweakers willen hebben (AGP divider instellen, meer dan 10 FSB's, Vcore via Bios instellen en Hardware monitoring) maar is wel aardig goed voor een niet power user die een goedkoop systeempje wil hebben.

Dr Foh meldt: dat ze bij Tom's Hardware Guide een enorme lap tekst online hebben gezet waar ze 12 KX133 plankjes vergelijken. Zoals te verwachten was vonden ze de plankjes van Asus en Abit het beste, de K7V en KA7 :

To say it right at the beginning: Compared to previous motherboard tests, this one really stressed our patience. Of course, some of the test candidates are early revisions with BIOS versions partially still in beta stage, thus not completely up to the demands of stable day-to-day use. But on the other hand we especially had quite a hard time to run the extensive benchmark tests under Windows 2000 Professional. Finally we decided to use the workstation version of Windows NT 4.0 SP6a, and ran the benchmark test on this operating system instead, in addition to Windows 98 SE.

Windows 2000 seems to pose some kind of problem to both, VIA as well as NVIDIA. While VIA supplied only some half-baked support to the Win2k package, NVIDIA is unable to release a final Win2k driver for their recent chips, although Windows 2000 is now available for several months already.

[...] This comparison test shows one thing very clearly: The KX133 chipset is certainly superior to the AMD 750 in terms of performance. Even though most boards still came with early BIOS versions (partially beta), the majority of the tested boards ran stable in day-to-day operations under Windows 98 SE and NT 4.0 - if the BIOS settings were correct. However, the individual candidates displayed significant performance differences: while the Asus K7V and the Abit KA7 are in the lead in almost all benchmark disciplines, the LuckyStar K7VA133 and the Aopen AK 72 end up in last place. At least the slow performance of the Aopen AK72 is counterbalanced by a stable system behavior.

Bij Imaging Resource is een review te vinden van Sony's nieuwste speeltje, de DSC-S70. Deze digitale fotocamera bezit een lens van Carl Zeiss (met 3x optische zoom) en een 3.3 megapixel CCD. The S70's lightweight portability and full set of features make for a very user friendly camera we think most consumers will enjoy. Aperture- and shutter-priority exposure modes provide good exposure control, and give you as much decision making power as most users will want or need. At the same time, the full-auto mode gives true "point & shoot" operation for the novice, or for those times you'd prefer to let the camera do the thinking. We'd like to have seen a standard flash sync connector, but the optional Sony auxiliary flash does provide a solid external-flash option. The camera's Carl Zeiss lens is of unusually high quality, rendering exceptionally sharp, highly-detailed images, with the highest resolution we've yet found in a digicam. The optional (huge!) wide-angle lens produces very wide coverage, which could make the combination a great choice for people needing to photograph building interiors or other very wide-angle subjects. Overall, an excellent 3 megapixel digicam! Highly recommended.

3DWorkshop heeft in dit nieuwsbericht een heel klein beetje informatie over de opvolger van de Neon 250 / PowerVR series 2, de teleurstellende video chipset van Videologic / Imagination Technologies. Vooral in 32 bit en de hogere resoluties kon deze kaart niet op tegen de concurrentie.

A while ago Imagination Technologies announced a partnership with STMicroelectronics (those who did the Riva128 chip) which stated that STMicro. would be making the upcoming PowerVR3 chips as well.

We know prototype boards are available but mass-production isn't expected until later this year. However more information have surfaced.

The name of the chip will be Kyro.
It will be a very low-cost solution.
The technology requires very little bandwidth.
It has, up until now, been very de-hyped.
Expect very good performance.

Het enige dat er dus écht in staat is dat de naam Kyro zal zijn. Altijd leuk om te weten.
