I just got off the phone with someone in the industry who revealed that NVIDIA is now in a major lawsuit with ELSA over the ELSA GLADIAC GeForce2 GTS boards. Anyone who has seen the GLADIAC's will notice that they were the first in stores; this is no coicidence. ELSA illegally shipped the boards early to get a jump on the competition. Not only this, but the boards aren't really even theirs. They are nearly 100% reference NVIDIA. ELSA bought reference boards, labeled them, and shipped them to stores. As if this wasn't enough, they also shipped them with premature drivers. The Detonator 5.16's which were leaked last week were not supposed to have shipped with any GTS boards; 5.18 is the shipping revision. ELSA ignored this, and shipped the boards anyways, not only leaking premature drivers but also shipping them without proper software.

AMD was using a DDR system in their booth as well as a few others. In the Micron booth, as well as in AMD's suite, there were Spitfire/SocketA (Duron I think is the official name now) motherboards in action. A part of why DDR is gaining momentum is that it is a technology that the memory manufacturers helped design. It is different from SDRAM in that it can be accessed twice per clock cycle on the rising and falling edges of the signal (similar to 2x AGP). Since the internals of the chips are similar to SDRAM, it does not cost the manufacturers significantly more than SDRAM to make DDRRAM.

Also worth mentioning is that AMD did have stable working Thunderbird and Spitfire processors running in their suite. Its nice to see that they have solid silicon on both of these, as they should present some solid competition to Intel in the desktop market which is good for all of us. Increased competition raises performance while lowering costs. Something that I hadn't realized before my talk with AMD is that currently AMD supplies over 60% of laptop CPUs. Its good to see that there is finally a more serious competition in the CPU marketplace.

AMD Zone meldt dat de Duitse site Au Ja! details wist te verkrijgen over de problemen van de Thunderbird in combinatie met de VIA KX133 chipset. Volgens Au Ja! heeft de adresbus van de Athlon een timing tolerantie van 300ps. De Thunderbird vereist een tolerantie van 210ps of lager, wat geen probleem is voor de Irongate (<200ps) maar wel voor de KX133 chipset (<250ps). Omdat de timing ook beïnvloed kan worden door de layout van de plank hebben sommige KX133 borden geen problemen met de Thunderbird. Asus claimt dat de K7V wél met de Thunderbird overweg kan:

Some German sites got mail in which is claimed that the Thunderbird/VIA KX133 problem is a timing problem. The Adressbus of the Athlon has a tolerancy holding information for up to 300ps. The Irongate Chipset needs 200ps (<300 = okay), the KX133 needs 250ps (<300 = okay). The Thunderbird has only a tolerancy of 210ps! The Irongate Chipset will work, but the KX133 exceeds this tolerancy and fails. Since not only the chipset but the mainboard layout have influence on this, some mainboards may work and Asus claims the K7V will.

Als deze toleranties bij de normale Slot A Thunderbird al zo nauw zijn, dan heb ik mijn twijfels of Slot A -> Socket A riser cards ooit gaan werken. Trace lengths zijn dan mogelijk nog langer.

Nee ik ben niet gek , Microsoft wil niet in stukjes gehakt worden en heeft daarom een stapeltje maatregelen bedacht die dat moeten gaan voorkomen. Ze hebben onder andere bedacht dat de broncode van Windows beschikbaar moet zijn voor ieder software bedrijf en dat programma's de windows desktop mogen veranderen:

Under the proposal, Microsoft would be required to provide open, timely and complete access to the parts of the Windows operating system code used by independent software companies to design their software applications to run on Windows.

This is meant to address the judge’s findings that Microsoft used access to the applications programming interfaces in a discriminatory fashion.

ZDNet heeft een stukje geschreven over de Thunderbird problemen. Ze hebben het over het feit dat we waarschijnlijk heel weinig Slot A Thunderbirds gaan zien, dat die dan ook nog niet goed werken met de KX133 chipset en als laatste dat je geen Socket A CPU op je Slot A athlon plankje kan gebruiken:

This is where things will get tricky. While AMD will only offer Slot A Thunderbird chips to its large PC makers, those chips will be compatible only with the company's own AMD 750 chip set. Furthermore, AMD has no plans to offer Slot A Thunderbirds to the reseller channel. AMD says all Thunderbird chips that will be sold at retail will be in its Socket A packaging.

[...] Socket A chips and Slot A chip sets and motherboards are incompatible. That means current Athlon motherboards will not support Thunderbird chips. The chances of finding a Slot A chip look pretty slim.

The Slot A Thunderbird chips will also be incompatible with the current Athlon chip set from VIA Technologies Inc., called VIA Apollo KX133. Sake schrijft dat WDSoft een tooltje heeft gereleased waarmee je het BIOS van de Asus K7V kunt modificeren, zodat deze bij het booten meteen de gewenste cache divider instelt. Het idee is vergelijkbaar met WCPUA2B proggie van H.Oda, alleen kun je dit 'FixL2Cache' tooltje nu al downloaden! Sake heeft 't op een Asus K7V geprobeerd en bij hem werkte het probleemloos:

Nou, ik dacht laat ik het zelf maar eens doen. Met BIOS K7V1005.awd naar K7V1005.fix. En m'n "oude" K7M staat bij een kennis en dus kon ik altijd nog overnieuw flashen. En wat schetste m'n verbazing: het werkt nog ook! NB Volgens hun in eerste instantie alleen met een K7V!

M.a.w. al bij het opstarten staat m'n L2 cache nu op 2/5. Hoeft je (als eigenaar van een K7V mammaplank) niet meer te solderen om te kijken of de L2 cache de bottleneck is

Kun je mooi testen of het overklokken belemmerd wordt door je L2 cache of je de core. Bij mij gaat ie nu 50Mhz hoger. Niet echt een verschil maar wel erg leuk om mee te spelen en bij anderen onder ons waar de L2 cache de bottleneck is zal ie weer wat hoger kunnen. Tweakerdietweak . [break]
