EBN Online heeft een interessant artikel gepost over de Willamette en de momenteel zeer beperkte supplies van Rambus DRAMs. Voor Intel kan dit een groot probleem zijn wanneer zij eind dit jaar de Willamette en Tehama chipset introduceren, een combinatie die - zoals het er nu naar uit - uitsluitend met (dual) Rambus overweg kan. Intel zou de Willamette in één klap onverkoopbaar kunnen maken wanneer deze uitsluitend met moeilijk verkrijgbare en bovendien erg dure RIMMs werkt.

DRAM fabrikanten zien vooralsnog weinig reden om de Rambus produktie te verhogen, zeker niet als de SDRAM prijzen na de zomer weer gaan stijgen. Volgens EBN gaan er geruchten dat Intel een memory translator hub in ontwikkeling heeft waarmee de Tehama chipset voor PC133 SDRAM geschikt kan worden gemaakt. Een andere uitweg is het gebruik van trager PC600 in plaats van PC800 RDRAM. Yields van PC800 RIMMs zijn momenteel erg laag, waardoor veel chips gedegradeerd worden tot de PC600 en PC700 specs:

The uncertainty surrounding Rambus availability and performance yields is prompting Intel to develop two key contingency plans, according to sources. The first would allow the Willamette's Tehama chipset to interact with lower-speed, 600-MHz Rambus chips, while a second, more ominous, option would see the company offering a memory translator hub that would connect certain Willamette-class chipsets with widely available PC133 SDRAM.

Jeff Mailloux, DRAM marketing manager at Micron Technology Inc., Boise, Idaho, calculated that for every Direct RDRAM chip the company makes, it loses the ability to make two SDRAM chips because of the die area Direct RDRAM requires. Despite the adverse ratio, Micron said it will make Direct Rambus for customers requesting the chip, but estimated as little as 5% of all production this year would be devoted to the new memory interface.

While they disagree whether Intel has committed to the option, several customers close to Intel's product-development efforts say the company is seriously considering a plan to field in the second half of this year an MTH+ to support PC133 memory as an adjunct to the Willamette platform.

Nu.nl heeft net een bericht gepost waarin ze schrijven dat de maker van het 'I Love You' virus geen Filipijn is, maar een Duitser die in verband met een uitwisseling in Australië verblijft. Deze info is afkomstig van de Zweedse expert Fredrik Björck die naar eigen zeggen ook de verantwoordelijke achter het Melissa virus had vastgesteld.

Hij zegt dat hij de student, die Michel heet, al drie uur nadat de eerste berichten over 'I love you' opdoken, heeft getraceerd. Michel heeft het virus op de Filipijnen geactiveerd, wat echter niet hoeft te betekenen dat hij zich in dat land bevond.

Andere computerdeskundigen in Zweden hebben gereserveerd op de uitlating van Björck gereageerd. De Filipijnse regering verdenkt een 23-jarige inwoner van een buitenwijk van Manila ervan achter 'I love you' te zitten.

Behind the familiar face of Windows 98, Microsoft's latest OS hides new features and lots of enhancements.

Despite its lofty-sounding name, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me for short) is less the operating system for the new century and more of an update to the Windows versions of the previous one.

On the surface, Windows Me looks nearly identical to Windows 98, and you have to look closely to spot the subtle changes in the desktop icons, Start menu, and Control Panel (many of which are borrowed from Windows 2000). Scratch beneath the surface, though, and you'll find a few new features and loads of little enhancements that will make Windows Me a compelling upgrade for most users.

These improvements fall into three general categories. First (and perhaps most important), Microsoft has added features that make the OS faster and more reliable. Windows Me should boot up more quickly, prevent you from deleting critical files, and, if your system really gets out of whack, even turn back time to restore your system to working order. Second, Windows Me makes it easier to set up home networks and share Internet connections through new wizards and improved hardware support. Finally, Windows Me has improved support for digital imaging and multimedia, with new applications for grabbing images from digital cameras, making your own movies, and tuning in to streaming audio and video.

Bij VIA Hardware is een comparison gepost tussen de Asus P3V4X en de Abit VT6X4, twee plankies gebaseerd op de popie VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Volgens de reviewer wint Asus het op alle fronten; overklokbaarheid, features en performance.

With better performance and options that most of us like to see, the Asus P3V4X is the winner. Both boards are great boards but it would have been nice to see Abit include SoftMenu III. I really do like the idea of 4 USB ports and a free OS included with the VT6X4. A quick look on price watch showed the P3V4X for $95 and the VT6X4 for $87. But in the end the performance of the P3V4X as well as the 4 DIMM slots and 6 PCI slots make it hard to beat. For the price, flexibility, upgradeablitly, and overclocking my choice for the Intel Slot 1 or fc-ppga Pentium 3 is the Asus P3V4X.

Vipertje schrijft dat de mannen van Thresh's FiringSquad een aantal benchmarks hebben gepost van de GeForce SDR, DDR en de GeForce2 GTS in zowel een Celeron 566 als een Celeron @ 867MHz systeem. Ter vergelijking bleek in de hogere resoluties een Celly 566 met een GeForce2 ongeveer even snel of sneller te zijn dan de Celly 867 met een GeForce DDR. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

As we stated in the intro, we know what it's like living off a small budget. We know that not everyone has $1,000 to upgrade their system every year, or "refresh" their graphics card every 6 months.
With this is mind we doubt many Celeron owners are eager to shell out $350 for a GeForce 2 card, in some cases that can be twice the cost of the processor alone! When you consider that this graphics card offers similar performance to the GeForce DDR in lower resolutions, yet costs $100 less we begin to question the "value" in pairing a GeForce 2 with the Celeron II processor.

On the other hand, the GeForce 2 should easily last you through this Christmas, and probably well into next year. By then 1GHz+ CPU's will be more affordable (as well as more easily available) and even faster graphics processors from 3dfx and NVIDIA should be on the market competing for your dollars. Between now and then more games will be available that will take greater advantage of the GeForce 2 chip, widening the gap between it and the GeForce DDR.

Chris Connolly van GamePC brengt ons een review van de momenteel snelste low-end Intel CPU die leverbaar is, de Celeron 600. Na wat overklokken bleek de Celly 600 succesvol op 900MHz de benchmarks te doorstaan, wat resulteerde in een winst van tot een dikke 50%. Echt indrukwekkend is dit echter niet aangezien de performance dan nog niet boven die van een Coppermine 650E kan komen.

It's not that the new Celerons are bad chips, they do serve their purpose (which is for basic desktop computing) perfectly fine. Gamers shouldn't be impressed with the super-high clock speeds that an overclocked Celeron rig can have, as the performance doesn't show through in making their favorite games faster. Most of us would simply be better at buying a lower-end Coppermine for the same price, and getting nearly 1/3 better performance in most applications.

It appears the throne of price/performance king has moved from the Celeron line to AMD's Athlon line, for now at least, as these new Celerons are just breaking our hearts with their disappointing performance. Low-end users should definitely keep a sharp eye out next month for AMD's Duron processors, which offer just about everything the Athlon has, but also offers on-die cache and a sleek new Socket-A format, not to mention a very nice price tag.

Micron heeft aangekondigd de Samurai DDR chipset te gaan massaproduceren voor de AMD Athlon processor. Het rare is alleen dat een onbekend bedrijf de chipset zal gaan fabriceren terwijl deze in een cross-licensing agreement zit met Intel. Volgens insiders hoopt Micron dat ze Intel alsnog kan strikken om ook de Samurai DDR chipset te gaan ondersteunen.

In a marked strategy shift, Micron Technology Inc. said it now plans to sell its Samurai core-logic chipset under its own label to support the Athlon microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The double-data-rate SDRAM-enabled chipset will be made by an unidentified foundry that, in an ironic twist, has a technology cross-licensing agreement with Intel Corp. Industry sources said that in addition to supporting AMD's Athlon chips, Micron will authorize the foundry to brand, market, and sell the Samurai under its own label to connect with Intel's desktop Pentium processors. Executives at Micron, Boise, Idaho, last week declined to comment on that aspect of the company's new thrust.

Micron now sees a large potential market for DDR-enabled chipsets, said Dean Klein, vice president of the company's integrated products group. The move is a major departure for the company. On several occasions, Micron said it had no plans to enter the chipset business, maintaining that it would merely promote the Samurai chipset architecture to prime the market for DDR SDRAM.

[...] While Micron is eyeing opportunities in the Athlon arena, the company's foundry partner hopes to tie the Samurai to Intel's Pentium III, according to sources. That could pose a threat to the chip giant, which has steadfastly refused to develop a DDR-enabled chipset for its high-end processor.

According to observers, a maverick Pentium III chipset supplier could undermine Intel's efforts to jump-start support for Direct RDRAM, and would open a second market front against the company, which already is bracing for rival lower-end chipsets that support DDR SDRAM from Taiwanese IC makers Acer, SiS, and Via.

EBN Online melt in dit artikel dat Intel de Willamette processor zal inschakelen voor zowel de high-end als het midrange gedeelte van de PC markt. De Pentium III wordt hierdoor 'gedegradeerd' en moet onze behoeftes gaan voorzien in low-end budget systemen met de i815 chipset, PC133 SDRAM en AGP 4x poorten. AMD's Duron (Spitfire) en Thunderbird processor zullen hierdoor tegenover de Willamette komen te staan die overigens nog steeds gebruik zal maken van RDRAM en een quad-pumped 100MHz bus. Er is nog wel wat vaagheid over de chipset die Intel zal gebruiken voor de Willamette in het midrange gedeelte. Tulloch is een kandidaat, maar staat pas gepland voor juni 2001... Door deze gewijzigde strategie zijn overigens de plannen voor de Camino-III core-logic chipset met een 200MHz FSB en RDRAM support komen te vervallen.

In a significant product realignment, Intel Corp.'s upcoming Willamette microprocessor will now serve both the high-end and midrange PC-market segments, following the cancellation of a program that was to have cast the Pentium III chip in the midtier role, EBN has learned.

The Willamette, which Intel has described as its highest-performing desktop processor and a showcase for high-speed, 800-MHz Direct Rambus DRAM, is now being assigned the dual task of capturing top-end and mid-range market share from the Thunderbird and Spitfire processors -- the next-generation derivatives of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Athlon chip, according to sources familiar with Intel's product plans.

With the Pentium III no longer addressing the competitive midrange market, Intel is planning a major publicity campaign to extend the Willamette squarely into the $1,200 to $1,500 territory AMD is targeting with its upcoming Spitfire CPU.

Bert McComas, an analyst at InQuest Research Inc., Gilbert, Ariz., said Intel faces a serious challenge from AMD's four-prong Athlon attack -- Thunderbird, Spitfire (which will be branded as the Duron), Mustang, and Corvette -- and said Intel must fire back quickly with a mid-range version of the Willamette to counter the competitive threat.

Bij GA-Hardware is vandaag een review te vinden van de Labtec LCS-2514 speakerset, bestaande uit 4 satellites en een subwoofer. Uit ervaring (heb het setje ook ) weet ik dat je voor het geld een heel goed product in huis haalt. De reviewer deelt mijn mening:

Wow! That best sums up the performance of these speakers. I used to sell high-end audio equipment, and music sounds good, even if these speakers are not going to replace the Martin Logan's in your home audio system. The subwoofer is especially impressive, really pumping out the bass in a modest size, due primarily to the wooden enclosure and the high excursion driver. Excursion is the distance the speaker actually travels. The longer the excursion, the more air the woofer displaces and the higher volume of the bass. Highs tend to be a little shrill, mainly because of the small size of the satellites.

Games are where these babies really excel. If you have a four-speaker card, the addition of EAX or A3D makes a world of difference, and the LCS-2514 does a great job of producing all effects, ranging from the creak of a door behind you in Thief2 to a Rocket Launcher explosion in Quake3. If you do not have a four-speaker card, Labtec's M3D Matrix Surround provides fairly realistic surround sound. You can individually adjust both the front and rear speaker volumes individually using the controls on top of the right speaker.

Het is niet allemaal rozengeur en manenschijn met de nieuwe GeForce2, eigenaren van een mamaplankje met de AMD 751 chipset hebben kans dat ze hun kaartje niet in AGP 2x mode kunnen gaan gebruiken, iets wat een aardig verlies in performance opleverd:

We have noticed some issues with the following hardware/software
combination: Windows 98 running on a PC based on AMD's Irongate core logic chipset with a GeForce 2 GTS board installed AND running in AGP 2x mode. Given that hardware/software combination, there is also some application sensitivity...some games run overnight without a problem and some do not. We found that the instability is related to AGP 2x mode, so setting the system to AGP 1x mode solves the problem.

The choice of using the special "Athlon" driver is up to each user. If the user does not experience problems running in AGP 2x mode with the regular driver, they should use the standard driver. If the user does experience instability, then the special driver is an option.

Lots of Athlon-based PCs use the Irongate core logic chipset - which believe is what you have in the Fester MoBO, so, many users will associate this with the combination of Athlon and GeForce, despite the fact that it is strictly a core logic chipset issue.

S3 heeft (alweer) nieuwe Windows 9x drivers gereleased voor hun Savage4 chip. Deze keer alleen reference drivers, geen specifieke Stealth III S540 drivers. Zoals gewoonlijk zijn er weer wat kleine foutjes verholpen, zie daarvoor de readme.

Wat deze drivers bijzonder maakt, is dat ze zowaar sneller schijnen te zijn dan de voorgaande!

Mike Andrawes van Anandtech heeft voor ons een review van het Gigabyte GA-7VX mamaplankje geschreven, een Athlon plankje gebaseerd op de KX133 chipset. Het plankje heeft geen bijzondere features maar is ook niet slecht, daarom verdient hij een 6 volgens Anandtech:

Unlike just about every other manufacturer out there, Gigabyte still uses a DIP switch based CPU setup. Four dip switches control the FSB speed, which can be set to 100 / 110 / 115 / 120 / 124 / 129 / 133 / 138 / 143. FSB speeds of 120 MHz or above all include a 1/4 multiplier to the PCI bus to keep it as close to spec as possible. Unfortunately, we've had little success on any motherboard getting the EV6 bus of the Athlon to run stable over about 110 MHz, and the GA-7VX was no exception. We highly recommend using a "Golden Fingers Device" if you choose to overclock your Athlon. In order to supply a stable signal to the Athlon (something that is critical to the stable operation of any Athlon system since the Athlon draws so much power), Gigabyte outfitted the GA-7VX with twelve 1200uF and one 330uF capacitors next to the Slot-A connector.

Although the BIOS is technically the AMI Simple Setup 1.21, it looks exactly like the Award 4.51PG setup that we've come to know and love. All the tweaking options of the Award BIOS are still there, including control of the AGP transfer mode and the status of AGP fast writes, just like other VIA KX133 based boards.

[...] Overall, the Gigabyte GA-7VX is a well made KX133 motherboard, but has few features that make it stand out from the pack. If you're looking for a solid KX133 motherboard, the GA-7VX is an above average solution, although not the best out there.

Being the first to market is a notable feat for anyone, especially for a company the size of ELSA. And looking around, we don’t see anyone else on the radar that will be able to get thier cards out before the end of May. Kudos to ELSA for not only being first to market, and not making us wait a long time, but also delivering a solid card that should make a fine fit for any gamer out there.

SystemLogic heeft een review kunnen maken van de VOS32 & FLK32 CPU koelers. De VOS32 (expect een review van dit 'dingetje' op t.net ) is de beste van die twee, wat ook niet echt verbazingwekkend is aangezien die de grootste heatsink heeft en de meeste fans :

As you see here the FLK32 barely beats out the Standard HSF, whilst the VOS32 pulls away by 4c. One thing I noticed when I removed the heatsinks after the tests, is that the standard one and the FLK32 were warm, whilst the VOS32 was still cool. This means that the VOS32 still had quite a bit of cooling left in it. It also goes to show how throwing another fan on the FLK32 would yield some good results. The FLK32 really does have a whole heck of a lot of surface area, but having just one fan really dampens its performance.

I mentioned before that the SECC was not the best for cooling, and here it shows. That heatplate along with the two layers of thermal compound are really hurting the heat flow off the processor. If you are really serious about cooling then that heatplate and plastic shell have to go. Not to mention that it will allow you to mess with the cache divider. Next article with these 3 HSFs will be of them on the bare CPU.

Tachyon meldt dat ze bij Ace's Hardware een leuke vergelijking hebben gemaakt, ze vergelijken de 850MHz Athlon met een 466MHz Alpha 21264. De Athlon heeft bijna de dubbele hoeveelheid aan megaherzjes maar is net iets sneller dan de Alpha. Dat is op zich wel aardig goed, maar met een stapel optimalisaties in de compiler wist de Alpha CPU de Athlon in elke floating point benchmark te verslaan :

The biggest difference between the Alpha and the powerhouses from AMD and Intel is the fact that the Alpha is a RISC chip. Now, internally the Athlon and PIII share many properties of RISC design philosophy, but one of the biggest advantage of a real RISC chip is the sheer amount of general purpose registers (GPRs) that the compiler can use. The Alpha has 32 integer and 32 floating point registers available for the compiler. This is in comparison to the 8 registers permitted by x86. Another 48 Integer and 40 floating-point rename registers can be used by the scheduler to avoid resource conflicts. We will show you why so much "compiler available" registers are important.

[...] I know, the Alpha DS10 is targeted at the low-end webserver market, and is a very decent number cruncher for technical and scientific applications, but if the price of the Alpha DS10 would come down a bit, and Compaq offers a faster Alpha processor in this system (say a 500-575 MHz), the Alpha DS10 could compete in the desktop Linux market. Failing this, the faster processor would surely make the Alpha DS10 incredibly popular for applications where crunching power is important, when you consider that the 21264 466MHz can outperform the best x86 processors today. To justify the price premium, Compaq should offer a faster processor. It would be a pity if this beautiful architecture would die, as we are convinced that we need more diversity on the market. The Linux community, Samsung, and Compaq can make sure that there is an alternative (besides Sun and Solaris, of course) to Intel and Microsoft.
