HardOCP kreeg van een lezer een interessante reaktie op het nieuws dat de nieuwe FC-PGA processors van Intel bijzonder gevoelig zijn voor overclocking. Onder bepaalde omstandigheden kan de plastic verpakking van deze chips open barsten. Volgens de post op HardOCP komt dit mogelijk door sterke temperatuursverschillen in het gedeelte van de chip waar zich de L2 cache bevindt:

Most of the cracked flip chips have been breaking on one corner, or on the edge. This roughly corresponds to the location of the cache on the die (according to intels spec sheet, attached). It also seems to be occuring not only on peltier cooled systems, but on passive cooling systems as well.

Initially, the culprit was thought to be thermal stress, generated by peltiers. After seeing most of the reports from people who were using only large heatsinks (alphas, GWs), the suspicion shifted to mechanical stress on the slug.

Latest indications seem to be a combination of the two. The real problem is the fact that the cache and the processor core generate heat at different rates. When you combine this with a very slightly mis-aligned high-stress joint, you seem to get these problems. This problem only seems to be further excerbated by the greater temperature differential generated by peltier cooling. [break] Intel heeft tegenover The Register te kennen gegeven dat zij niet bekend zijn met problemen rond beschadigde FC-PGA chips: [/break] A spokesman for Intel said: "It's important to use the right kind of heatsink with FC-PGA packaging". He said that while heat sinks designed for ceramic socketed microprocessors might look like they would work with the plastic packaged chips, the thickness of heat sinks designed for FC-PGA chips was different.

He added: "We haven't seen any reports of this packaging breaking." Intel worked with its PC customers to design heat sinks specifically tailored to FC-PGA chips, and these were made to exacting specifications, he said.

NOS Teletekst meldt dat KPN de fusiegesprekken met het Spaanse Telefonica heeft afgebroken. The Register schrijft dat NEC als reactie op de stijgende SDRAM prijzen heeft besloten om te kappen op de produktie van Rambus chips:

As the price of 64Mb (megabit) memory rises, major semiconductor firm NEC has started to put chips on allocation, according to analysts Bear Sterns.

And, at the same time, NEC is believed to have now realised it vastly overrestimated the impact of Rambus memory and is taking steps to cut back supply and shift production lines to SDRAM (synchronous memory).

NEC is overigens maar een kleine speler in de Rambus markt. Veruit de meeste chips worden door Samsung geproduceerd.

The Register meldt dat Apple op 15 mei tijdens de Worldwide Developers Conference mogelijk dual én quad processor G4's zal demonstreren. Paz schrijft dat de indentiteit van de maker van de 'I love you' worm bekend is: een 23 jarige student uit manila:

(CNN) -- An Internet service provider in Manila, Philippines, has confirmed to CNN.com that a 23-year-old male from the Pandacan area of Manila has two e-mail addresses through their service and is believed to be the author of the "ILOVEYOU" virus.

The two e-mail addresses, spyder@super.net.ph and mailme@super.net.ph were the source of the virus, according Manuel Bong, a spokesperson for Access Net, which owns Super Net.

The beginning of the virus code states, in comments, the alias "spyder," and contains an anonymous e-mail address and a company name. It is also signed "Manila, Philippines," and with the comment, "i hate go to school."

Additionally, the virus tries to set the user's Internet Explorer start page to a Web site registered in Quezon, Philippines. It attempts to trigger a program called "WIN-BUGSFIX.exe" on one of four user accounts through the same site. The site belongs to one of the largest Internet Service Providers in the Philippines.

As I mentioned earlier in the review, we also tested the memory in an Athlon based system. I've heard several reports of RAM compatibility problems in Athlon systems, but that didn't seem to be the case with any of the modules tested here. All the modules performed just fine in the MSI-6167 motherboard. That was definitely good to see.

[...] As you can see, the Mushkin memory performed significantly better than the other modules in the test at CAS2. Several of the DIMMs performed very well at the CAS3 setting though. If you were to pick up any of the modules in this RAM Roundup, you would have some memory that will perform well. The only concerns I would have with any of the memory would be possibly the Kingmax memory. Because of the issues with the ABIT BE6-II motherboard that was used in this (and both of the previous) RAM Roundup, you might run into problems with the memory on your system as well. I didn't see the issue on the other boards that the memory has been in, so don't let the results cause you to completely rule out the Kingmax memory. I would expect it to perform pretty well in most systems.

Verrasend genoeg zitten er grote verschillen in de hoogst bereikbare FSB als je het geheugen in verschillende sloten stopt (zie resultaten Kingmax geheugen), hoe dit kan weet ik niet maar het is wel vreemd dat de verschillen bij elk reepje verschillend zijn.

If you are like the rest of us, however, and are stapped for cash, keep your GeForce for at least one more generation of NVIDIA cards. The new variants can elude anti-virus software designed to block the "ILOVEYOU" bug and could potentially cause the same damage.

"We predict at least a dozen copycats within the next 24 hours," said computer security expert Peter Tibbett, who works for ICSA.net of Reston, Virginia, which measures the frequency and cost of viruses on 1 million machines per year.

"There'll be hundreds of these" in the coming days, he said, "maybe thousands."

He said he didn't expect the copycats to cause the widespread damage that Thursday's "ILOVEYOU" virus did -- which is estimated at tens of millions of dollars in damage worldwide and could reach $1 billion by Monday.

Van Smith van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een verslag gepost van de Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, die twee week geleden in New Orleans plaatsvond. Van schrijft o.a. dat AMD, Micron en Advanced Memory International op de WinHEC aanwezig waren om DDR SDRAM te promoten:

Dual Data Rate SDRAM seemed to have strong support at WinHEC 2000. Directly across the aisle from Intel's booth was Micron's large display which focused on DDR SDRAM. At AMD's booth, standing guard over the Thunderbird DDR SDRAM was an Infineon representative as well as Desi Rhoden, President and CEO of Advanced Memory International (AMI2) and Chairman of the influential JEDEC Board of Directors. We asked Mr. Rhoden if DDR SDRAM would suffer any latency problems over comparable SDRAM as has been rumored. Mr. Rhoden responded that latency would actually be lower in many cases. Ron Huff of AMD expanded upon this by saying that because current memory in Athlon systems runs asynchronously to the processor, latency hits necessarily occur in the north bridge. These delays will be eradicated in Athlon systems using DDR SDRAM since the memory will run synchronously with the processor.

Verder heeft Van een leuke nudie van een Itanium kachel met 'power pod' voltage regulators. Deze systeempjes zijn uitgevoerd met een 800W voeding!:

Ik lees op de duitse site Planet 3DNow! dat onze kameraad H.Oda werkt aan een tooltje waarmee de L2 cache divider in de BIOS binaries van een aantal Athlon moederborden geprogd kan worden. Deze gepatchde BIOS files kun je vervolgens in je BIOS flashen, waarna je direkt bij het booten van de gewenste cache divider gebruik kunt maken. Dit zou Athlon overclocking een stuk gemakkelijker kunnen maken. Op dit moment kunnen alleen geregistreerde beta testers het proggie neerhalen:

Wie man sieht, sind von 16 Testversuchen die Hälfte negativ ausgefallen ! Wobei noch nichtmal klar ist, was bei den Fehlschlägen letztendlich genau passiert ist. Ob einfach das Updaten des Bios nicht funktioniert hat, oder ob der PC dann überhaupt nicht mehr gebootet hat.

Tachyon stuurde een interessante link naar Overclockers.com, waar men schrijft dat de nieuwe FC-PGA PIII's en Celerons mogelijk gevoeliger zijn voor overclocking dan vorige Intel processors. Overclockers.com kreeg diverse rapporten over plotseling doodvallende FC-PGA CPU's:

When I went about deconstructing the PIII in Part I, little did I realize that perhaps there is more story here than we thought. Anectdotal evidence is mounting which suggests that the FCPGA is more delicate than previous Intel CPUs; Is Intel's FCPGA yield problem an indication of this problem?

[...] A number of folks who have written to us about FCPGA failures also stated that Intel appears to blame slotkets (among just about everything else) for these failures. Now I will state again that I can not tell you if this is in fact an endemic problem - I can tell you that this is the first time since Overclockers.com started that we are receiving reports of CPU failures. Dan Edgar, one of our editors, has had two failures and is not doing anything extreme.

Based on the emails below, I believe the problem is due to thermal and mechanical stresses which aggravate micro-fractures in the silicon leading to failure. Intel is replacing these CPUs (as they should) with little hesitation. Is this a large problem? Only time will tell if FCPGAs are time bombs waiting to go off.

Het is nog wat te voorbarig om hier conclusies aan te verbinden, maar vreemd is het wel.

Metallica heeft inmiddels een wagonlading documenten op de stoep van het Napster-kantoor gedumpt. Hierop staan de IP-adressen en gebruikersnamen van 335.435 individuen die volgens hen illegaal Metallica-songs hebben uitgewisseld via Napster.

First official Test Cycle for Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 started

"The first official Test Cycle has started today", said Richard Braakman, current Debian Release Manager. This is the next milestone in the
release-cycle of "potato", which will become Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 when it is released.

The next few days are dedicated to getting boot-floppies and CD images ready for testing. No uploads are allowed into potato except the
ones that are substantial for these two systems.

After that, the entire distribution will be tested for about 10 days. During the period, no changes will be made to the archive. Following
these tests comes an evaluation period, during which either potato will be released as-is, or new fixes will be installed into the archive and
a new Test Cycle will start.

Security.nl meldde nu precies een dag geleden dat apache.org, de website van 's werelds meest gebruikte webserver even daarvoor was gehackt: (bedankt voor de link, imeller)

De site van de ontwikkelaars van 's wereld meest gebruikte webserver, www.apache.org is hedennacht door nog onbekenden gekraakt. Wij wisten een screenshot te bemachtigen en maakten een kopie. Hoe de krakers, die een logo van MS BackOffice op de site plaatsten zijn binnengekomen is nog onbekend.[break]Later is daar een link aan toegevoegd naar tekst en uitleg van de hackers:[/break] This paper describes how, over the course of a week, we succeeded in getting root access to the machine running www.apache.org, and changed the main page to show a 'Powered by Microsoft BackOffice' logo instead of the default 'Powered by Apache' logo (the feather). No other changes were made, except to prevent other (possibly malicious) people getting in. Note that the problems described in this paper are not apache-related, these were all config errors (one of 'm straight from BugZilla's README, but the README had enough warnings so I don't blame the BugZilla developers). People running apache httpd do not need to start worrying because of anything uncovered herein. Hitachi heeft de US International Trade Commission gevraagd om vijf DRAM fabrikanten toe te voegen aan de rechtszaak die Rambus Inc. eerder dit jaar tegen Hitachi heeft geopend. Rambus beschuldigd Hitachi ervan dat zij in hun SDRAM en SH-x processors gebruik maken van door Rambus Inc. gepatenteerde timing technologie. Hitachi beweert echter dat Rambus deze patenten onrechtmatig van de JEDEC heeft 'gejat'. De Hitachi SH-4 processor en de SDRAM produkten van de eerder genoemde vijf DRAM fabrikanten worden gebruikt in de Sega Dreamcast. De Dreamcast is toevallig weer een grote concurrent voor de Playstation II, waar Rambus chips in verpakt worden:

Hitachi has contended that it is being unfairly targeted by Rambus and yesterday asked the ITC to add the five foreign suppliers to the suit. Hitachi claims that because each of the suppliers uses virtually the same technology and because each has sold its SDRAM chips into the Dreamcast console, the companies should be included in the ITC investigation.

[...] The company also reiterated a claim that its SDRAM technology was developed in compliance with an industry open JEDEC standard. The company said the other five memory suppliers also produce their SDRAMs in accordance with the same standard.

Hitachi asserted that the addition of the other DRAM producers in the ITC case would support its claim that the memory chips use a nonproprietary industry standard that are not protected by patents. Sources said that while Hitachi's peers in the DRAM market have quietly championed its efforts to defend against Rambus' claim, the latest action could bring most of the industry's major suppliers under the public spotlight.
