De duiste site TecChannel heeft meer info over de problemen rond de AMD Thunderbird en VIA KX133 chipset. Volgens TecChannel is een timing probleem van de EV6 DDR bus mogelijk de oorzaak van de compatibiliteitsproblemen, maar AMD wil dit niet bevestigen:

AMD konnte die Kompatibilitätsprobleme bereits selbst verifizieren: In Mainboards mit VIAs KX-133-Chipsatz läuft der Thunderbird als Slot-A-Version nicht stabil. Über die Gründe wollte sich AMD nicht auslassen, Gerüchte über ein schwieriges Timing des DDR-Busses des Athlon seien reine Spekulation, hieß es. Thunderbird wird der erste Athlon mit On-Die-Cache sein, über die bisher bekannten Details zu dieser CPU hat tecChannel bereits berichtet.

Het probleem rond de KX133 chipset is tevens de reden waarom AMD geen Slot A Thunderbirds aan de retail kanalen zal leveren. Het upgraden van een Athlon met Irongate naar Thunderbird wordt dus praktisch onmogelijk. In plaats daarvan zul je een nieuw KZ133 bord aan moeten schaffen, of moet je wachten tot de AMD760 borden op de markt komen.

Dat is wat ze hier proberen te doen. Ze hebben het over de formules nodig om de temperaturen te berekenen, de methodes die het beste werken om je CPU cool te houden en waarom sommige Coppermines af en toe kapot barsten :

The actually picture will not be like the one Transmeta uses to compare their chip with Intel's mobile chip, it will be the 2 combined, the Crusoe chip being the L2 Cache and the Core being the Intel's mobil chip.

Under such high temperature difference within the die and EPOXY, I expect the thermal stress is much worse a problem than thermal electrons. This might explain why there are quite a few cases of cracked CPU and Intel would take it back without hesitation.

Also, I think that Intel indeed has made a big mistake with the CuMine. In the Celeron design, they also had an EPOXY layer inside (see my page on de-casing the CPU), but the end customers do not have to worry about the contact, because Intel put a nice Silver paste deposite between the EPOXY and the copper cover. But this time, Intel wants to save something, and let the EPOXY directly exposed to the heatsink, so if the customer can not mount the heatsink evenly then one has hot hot spots on the CPU not well cooled.

Jeroen de Jager van C!T meldt dat de opvolger van de Athlon, de Thunderbird, niet compatible zal gaan zijn met de KX133 chipset :

Volgens een bron binnen chipfabrikant VIA (www.via.com.tw) waren de vroegste testversies van de Thunderbird compatible met de KX133-chipset. De nieuwste versies zijn dat echter niet. En zoals het er nu naar uitziet zal er geen oplossing voor dit probleem beschikbaar komen. VIA raadt aan om gebruik te maken van de opvolgers van de KX133 en KZ133. Deze twee chipsets zullen naar verwachting bij de introductie van de Duron- en Thunderbird-processors beschikbaar komen.

De oudere 750-chipset van AMD zou wel geschikt zijn voor de nieuwe Thunderbird. AMD schroeft om deze reden de productie flink op om aan de vraag te voldoen. Een nadeel is wel dat de specificaties van die chipset flink onderdoen voor de concurrerende chipset van VIA.[break]The Register heeft nog wat meer informatie waarom de KX133 niet compatible is:[/break]It is believed the problems stem from longer traces on the Slot A cartridge which lead to the timing inconsistency. A similar problem with trace lengths led to Intel reducing the number of Rambus RIMMs supported on its Vancouver VC820 mobo late last year.

Dit betekend dus voor de ex-gelukkige eigenaren van een KX133 plankje dat ze het upgraden naar een Thunderbird wil kunnen vergeten...

Techwatch heeft een paar vragen richting het Design en Develoment team van Creative Labs in singapore gestuurt:

Will the 3DB GF GTS2 follow nVidia's reference design, or will it be slightly different (such as Asus' and Elsa's GeForce 256 products)?

"Since our first cards done with nVidia, Creative had always explored ways to reroute to optimise the card's performance. From end-user level, physical look may look similar, but at a schematic level, changes are definitely being made. This will apply to 3DB GeForce2 GTS as well."

Are their plans for a 64Mb version? Or a SDRam version?

"Creative will definitely look into the requirements of our target customers, the power gamers. Whether with the advent of new games, an additional 32Mb onboard card will deliver the extra edge. A SDRam version will not be able to fully tap onto the power of the GeForce2 GTS chipset, by still having memory speed limitation."

There you have it boys and girls, and straight from the horses mouth. So what does this mean? Who knows, but it is clear that there will not be an SDRam (ie, reduced cost) model (atleast under the Creative name), and it is possible that there will be a 64Mb variety, but to an extent texture compression nulls this.

Waarschijnlijk had ook niemand verwacht dat er een SDR versie zou komen van de GeForce2 en nu verwachten nog minder mensen dat .

Hm, de Tweakers.net nieuws queue staat plotseling vol met meldingen van een "I Love You virus". Het verspreidt zich via e-mail als attachment "loveletterforyou.txt.vbs" (dubbele extensie, have mercy ). Deze text-file schijnt echter een Visual Basic proggie te zijn waarin het virus zit. Hieronder wat info van Miko:

Eerhm.. d'r is hier op de TUE in Eindhoven een lekker e-mail virusje zich aan het verspreiden.

Het e-mailtje bevat een Visual Basic programmaatje, dat je niet moet draaien! Doe je het wel, dan doet-ie vreemde dingen. In ieder geval zichzelf forwarden naar al jouw e-mail adressen in jouw adresboek, maakt zichzelf de startpagina van Explorer (welke op zijn beurt een heleboel VBS code bevat) en zit in de registry te klooien. Veel meer weet ik er nog niet over, maar je bent gewaarschuwd!
[break] Heraut heeft er ook wat info over: [/break] Ik werk zelf bij ******, en sprak net iemand die bij @Home werkt en bij Lucent. Als je een mailtje krijgt met de attachement "loveletterforyou.txt" en je opent die dan stuur hij het mailtje naar iedereen in je adresboek. Bij Lucent kreeg iedereen 4000 mailtjes binnen, bij @Home vele honderden en bij Ordina is het net 5 minuten geleden toegeslagen... Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat het hierbij blijft... *Update* tazitiz schrijft dat TEQ Nederland een mogelijke fix heeft voor als je inmiddels bent besmet met dit virus. Ik kan niet zeggen of het echt werkt, iemand zou dit effe moeten proberen die al geïnfecteerd is .

[/break] Deze fix niet meer uitvoeren, de virusscanner AntiViral Toolkit Pro voorzien van de laatste update kan inmiddels met het 'I Love You virus' overweg. [break]WebWereld heeft inmiddels ook een klein stukkie over dit virus geschreven. De folks bij IDG blijken er ook al mee te maken hebben gehad:[/break]I Love You.vsb gaat grondig te werk. Nadat het e-mailattachment is geopend, is het leed nauwelijks meer te overzien. Ten eerste vermenigvuldigt het Visual Basic-virus zich door een kopie van zichzelf naar alle contactpersonen in het adresboek te versturen. Deze denken een leuk mailtje van een bekende te krijgen, waarna het weer wordt geopend. Ten tweede – en dit is nog erger – verandert het virus van alles op de computer, zodat er feitelijk weinig anders opzit dan de hele schijf te herformateren. Er worden ongevraagd programma's gedownload. Het eerste wat opvalt is dat de startpagina van de browser zomaar is gewijzigd. Verder worden er allerlei bestanden (MP3, CSS, HTML, JPEG) aangepast, hernoemd tot een .vsb-bestand en onbruikbaar gemaakt. [break]Inmiddels heeft Sophos het een en anders over dit virus geschreven, hieronder wat belangrijke informatie:[/break] The attachment is called "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs", which has a "double extension". Mailers which suppress well-known extensions such as .vbs may present this file as "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT", which appears more innocent. Do not be misled by a trick like this.

Because the virus arrives in a VBS file, it requires the Windows Scripting Host (WSH) in order to work. If you disable WSH, the viral attachment will be rendered harmless.

The virus also drops an HTM file which can spread the virus, and a mIRC script which tries to distribute it. It also tries to download a file called WIN-BUGSFIX.exe from the internet, and injects two copies of its VBS script into the system directory where they are executed each time the computer reboots.

The email component of the virus requires Microsoft Outlook to work. If you are using Outlook it will try to send itself to each entry in your Windows Address Book. Note that following the Sophos Guidelines for Safe Hex will render you almost immune to this attack. If you do not read unusual or unlikely emails and if you have disabled the WSH, then you are unlikely to become infected.

[break]Voor de zekerheid is het dus aan te raden om Windows Scripting Host uit te schakelen (Start/Settings/Control Panel, -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup tab -> Accessories, uncheck Windows Scripting Host).

[Update 17:25] Inmiddels zijn er al heel wat artikel en updates verschenen over het I Love You virus. Voor de virusscanner Norman Data Defense Systems is een update gepost die geïnfecteerde bestanden detecteert, het programma AntiViral Toolkit Pro kan na een update het virus ook verwijderen. iXBT-Hardware brengt ons een review van de Celeron 566 uitgerust met de Coppermine128 core. Helaas had de reviewer geen zin om het ding te gaan testen op overklokbaarheid waardoor de proc niet echt goed uit de benchmarks rolde. Thresh's FiringSquad wist ons eerder te vertellen dat hun Celly 566 zo'n 900MHz wist te trekken.

Unfortunately, the shift to a new Intel Celeron core didn't lead to any improvements. Intel provided this new core with a powerful "brake", which locked the CPU's architectural advantages. The only positive thing about Celeron is its low price, which makes it suitable for really low-cost systems. However, even in this case you should bear in mind that together with the mainboards on i810, i810E and VIA Apollo Pro133A chipsets, which allow clocking the memory to 100MHz for the CPUs featuring 66MHz FSB, the performance gain may appear quite significant. But Intel Celeron should very soon acquire a really powerful competitor deprived of the listed drawbacks. This new CPU aimed at Low-End market sector is the upcoming AMD Duron with allegedly higher performance. It may actually force Intel to change their point of view, but on the other hand Celeron also has every chance to remain just an overclocking solution.

So, Intel Celeron based on the Coppermine128 core can be regarded only as a continuation of the low-cost CPUs family. It doesn't have any worthy practical advantages except SSE support. However, we should admit that although we failed to overclock our Celeron to 100MHz system bus, it is still quite possible due to a more progressive 0.18 micron technology. In this case a new Celeron processor will be a really nice solution even though Intel Pentium III on Coppermine core shows a much higher performance increase if overclocked.

The Ghost meldt dat altavista een nieuwe zoekmachine heeft, genaamd Raging Search, om de professionele internetter terug te lokken. Die was namelijk een beetje weg gelopen toen ze 101 andere diensten gingen aanbieden:

De nieuwe zoekmachine – die de naam Raging Search heeft meegekregen– komt naast de bestaande dienst. Raging Search zal ook gebruikmaken van de bestaande techniek. De verschillen zijn echter niet alleen optisch.

Doordat de zoekdienst zeer sober van opzet is en geen portal-achtige diensten aanbiedt, zouden de resultaten volgens AltaVista zo'n 20 procent sneller op het scherm verschijnen. Snelheid staat dus voorop.

AltaVista heeft moeite een haar marktaandeel vast te houden. De afgelopen tijd zijn er steeds meer toeters en bellen aan de dienst toegevoegd. Pamela Anderson en Garry Kasparov zijn ingehuurd om een mainstream-publiek te bereiken via een 120 miljoen dollar kostende reclamecampagne. Dit heeft allemaal niet mogen baten: het gat met bijvoorbeeld Yahoo en America Online is nog steeds gapend.

Bij Yahoo is een kort stukje te vinden over nVidia en de Mac. Voorlopig komen er waarschijnlijk nog geen kaarten van nVidia naar Mac land, maar die van 3dfx en ATi worden dit jaar nog verwacht:

We asked recently asked Nvidia about the GeForce 2 GTS, its newest generation of graphics chipset. Nvidia officially introduced the new technology during last week's WinHEC conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. "We are continuing to research the Mac/Apple market -- but at this time it does not look like we will be introducing a product to the Mac market," said a company spokesperson.

Mac users have yet to see Nvidia Corporation endorse any of its chipsets for use with the Macintosh, so it was no great surprise when we heard this answer come back from the company's public relations manager yesterday. Still, it's somewhat of a disappointment, since some industry wags are pegging Nvidia as the winner of the next race in 3D consumer graphics chipsets -- the other front runner is none other than ATI Technologies, which used last week's WinHEC conference to introduce Radeon 256, the successor to its RAGE 128 technology -- variants of which can be found in every shipping Mac except the iBook.

This promises to be an interesting year for Macintosh-compatible 3D graphics cards -- hopefully, by the years' end, ATI Technologies and Apple may have a plan in place to replace ATI's aging RAGE 128 technology with Radeon 256, which ATI claims has been built from the foundation up to support the Mac -- the company plans to have board designs done this summer. Meanwhile, 3dfx Interactive is finally dipping its toes into the Mac market with its long-awaited Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 cards, the first cards officially developed and sold for the Mac by 3dfx, and the first of a new generation of cards built around a chipset called the VSA-100. PCI-based Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 models may be stocked by Mac peripherals resellers by July. 3dfx has left the door open for other models to come to the Mac as well, depending on how well its first cards are received.

Naast FiringSquad en AnandTech heeft ook GamePC een review online gemieterd van de Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 videokaart. Chris Connolly was aardig te spreken over de behaalde framerates in hoge resoluties maar concludeert ook dat voor de meeste GeForce SDR en DDR bezitters deze dure upgrade niet echt de moeite waard is:

If you already own a GeForce SDR or DDR, there's little incentive for you to upgrade at this time. The GeForce2 GTS does perform quite a bit better than it's predecessor, but only in high resolution/color depth situations. If you run most of your games in low-resolution with low textures, you won't see any performance difference, you may even experience a slowdown. Let's put it this way, if you had a GeForce DDR, and someone snuck in to your computer and replaced it with a GeForce2, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the older and newer cards. The Gladiac is one fast card, once again, it is the fastest we've ever tested, but I'm sure it won't be for long.

Storage heeft een review gepost van de Ultra160/m SCSI Seagate Cheetah 73 schijf, waar je een vrij aardige 73.4 GB aan data op weg kan schrijven. Deze 10.000rpm Cheetah bevat 12 platters (á 6.1GB), een 4meg buffer en heeft een seektime van 5.6ms. Hier een gedeelte uit de conclusie:

The Cheetah 73's large platter count requires a more powerful spindle motor and actuator- things that don't bode well when it comes to heat and noise. As one would expect, the 73 is noticeably noisier and quite a bit warmer than the Cheetah 36LP. In most cases, active cooling is warranted. Noise-wise, there fortunately is no more a grating, high-pitch whine than with the 36LP. Seeks, however, are definitely more "visceral," for the lack of a better term. You will definitely know this drive is there .

Overall, the Cheetah 73 delivers the performance we'd expect… a notch below the Cheetah 36LP but quite swift nevertheless. Even so, we're hesitant to recommend a 1.6" high drive to most users. Though there are some advantages (higher GB/$ ratio, takes up less space than 2 properly-cooled 1" drives), the costs when it comes to heat and noise are not insignificant. If you truly need 73 gigs right now, yes, consider the Cheetah 73. Otherwise, drives such as the Quantum Altas 10k II (sub-73 gig versions), the Cheetah 36LP, and especially the Cheetah 18XL will deliver performance that's a bit better along with substantial drops in acoustic and thermal issues.

Anand Lal Shimpi heeft een zeer interessant artikel geschreven over AMD's processor en chipset plannen voor de rest van dit jaar. Zoals bekend zal over een paar weken de AMD Duron (Spitfire) worden geïntroduceerd, een low-end versie van de Athlon gepositioneerd tegenover Intel's Celeron. Ondanks Duron's full speed L2 cache zal hij niet sneller zijn dan de Athlon's, maar er wel zeer dicht bij in de buurt komen. De Celeron zal het dus zeer moeilijk krijgen tegen de Duron:

Fortunately, the Duron won't be as crippled as the new Celeron, since it will feature the same 100MHz DDR EV6 Bus (effectively 200MHz) that brought the Athlon so much attention upon its release. As we proved in our review of Intel's new Celeron, its 66MHz FSB and 66MHz memory bus is definitely holding back the performance of the CPU, and unless overclocked, this will give the Duron an easy performance advantage over the Celeron.

The Duron will feature the same 128KB L1 cache from the Athlon in addition to a full speed on-die L2 cache. While AMD isn't ready to disclose exactly how large that L2 cache is, they are willing to say that the Duron will feature more total on-die cache (L1 + L2) than the Celeron (which features 32KB L1 + 128KB L2). At the same time, the Duron will obviously have less L2 cache than the upcoming Thunderbird part (256KB), so you can safely guess as to what the actual cache size of the Duron will be. Je kan er vast op rekenen dat je lokale PC-boer alleen Socket-A Thunderbirds zal verkopen.[/break] According to AMD, you shouldn't be able to go out and purchase a Slot-A Thunderbird, meaning that you will most likely need to get a new Socket-A motherboard for use with the Thunderbird. While it is inevitable that there will be some Slot-A Thunderbirds leaked from the OEM channels to on-line vendors, for the most part you can expect the Thunderbird to be a Socket-A solution only.

AMD is pretty far behind with the transition to the cheaper Socket-A packaging for their processors and they want to make the move as quickly as possible. If you remember, Intel took quite a while to make the transition to FC-PGA 370, and even today, you can find a good number of Slot-1 Pentium IIIs. Since AMD didn't start the transition at the end of last year like Intel, they have to act very quickly in making this move. This will definitely upset the many Athlon users with Slot-A motherboards that will be relatively useless when the Thunderbird hits the streets this June.
[break] Ergens in het derde of vierde kwartaal zal AMD ons vrolijk maken met de Mustang, die snel zal optreden als vervanger van de Thunderbird. De Mustang zal ongeveer support bieden voor tot 1MB aan L2 cache en AMD's PowerNow! technologie. De Mustang core zal gebruikt worden voor de Athlon Ultra (servers en workstations) maar ook voor desktop PC's en mobiles (de Corvette). [/break]
This means that the Thunderbird will be fairly short-lived if it is to be replaced by the Mustang as the core of choice for the Athlon later this year, and it also means that AMD is going to be able to compete with Intel much more seriously than they have in the past in the mobile market with the mobile Mustang.

The mobile Mustang, going under the code name Corvette, will feature a smaller L2 cache than the desktop Athlon (Mustang) part and a lower voltage, which makes sense since it will be a mobile part.
[break] Op het gebied van chipsets meldt Anand dat we voor de Socket-A processors gebruik zullen maken van de KZ133 van VIA, die afgezien van Socket-A ondersteuning identiek is aan de KX133. De AMD 750 zal waarschijnlijk ook compatible zijn met de nieuwe Athlon processors, dan moet je echter wel een Slot-A Thunderbird weten te vinden. It won't be long before AMD regains the performance lead in both the low end and the high end desktop markets. Although the current Athlon is definitely performing quite well, its power is being severely limited by its slow L2 cache.

The release of the Thunderbird & Duron will help restore power to the AMD name, but the real thing to wait for will be the Mustang, which in the Athlon form will be the competitor to Intel's Willamette.

The lack of any motherboard solutions with DDR SDRAM support at the release of the Thunderbird will definitely be a downside, but so will the relative lack of any Slot-A Thunderbird parts. The reality here is that if you want to stay on top of the AMD x86 processor market, you'll probably have to upgrade twice, once to the Thunderbird and once again to the Mustang unless you can find it in you to wait for the latter.

Overclockers Workbench meldt dat er geruchten gaan dat Abit op dit moment werkt aan een dual FC-PGA moederplank. Deze opvolger van de BP6 zal tevens voorzien zijn van ATA100 support en busspeed settings in stappen van 1MHz (thanks Crack voor de tip):

It has been brought to my attention that there is a rumour that ABIT is making a ver 2 of it's popular ABIT BP6 mainboard to support the FC-PGA Dual Coppermines.

The board will also feature some of the best breed features of the BE6-II like 1Mhz Stepping of FSB and others like ATA-100 Support?? It was also mentioned that this board actually uses VIA chipset.

Looks like there will be a war of dual Coppermine boards when when Computex Taipei exhibition starts in June. The show will probably features some of the best innovative products from all manufacturers.

JC heeft een artikeltje in mekaar geklust rond de hardnekkige geruchten dat Athlon systemen niet stabiel draaien onder Windows NT. Uit de honderden reacties, waaronder ook een groot aantal uit de professionele en zakelijke hoek, kan geconcludeerd worden dat Athlons absoluut probleemloos onder NT4 en Windows 2000 werken:

Overall, the Athlon does work in NT, and from these reports it works well. In all honesty, I was expecting a lower win:loss ratio than this, so it is a very pleasant surprise to see the Athlon flourishing so well in these many examples.

This by NO means should at all be taken to imply anything negative about competitive products. Just because the Athlon is a great (according to many of the respondents here) processor for Windows NT has no bearing, positive or negative, on the Pentium or Celeron processors being manufactured by rival Intel Corp.

I wanted to keep that clear because I do not want this to be seen as some small-time Intel-bashing AMD-zealotry. It is accepted by the industry that the Pentium III (for instance) is a very reliable cpu for NT, so an article for it would not be needed here. On the other hand, the industry as a whole rates the Athlon as "we're not sure yet" in terms of NT/business stability/reliability, and I believe an article like this will be (and is) very useful towards helping to favour facts above heresay in computer purchasing decisions.

nVidia laat in een press release weten dat de eerste Elsa GeForce2 kaarten vanaf heden verkrijgbaar zijn bij Electronics Boutique, Best Buy en Fry's Electronics. Creative Labs, Leadtek, Guillemot en Asus zullen in de komende weken bekend maken wanneeer hun GeForce2 kaarten leverbaar worden:

NVIDIA(TM) Corporation (Nasdaq:NVDA - news) announced today that the first GeForce2 GTS(TM)-based graphics boards are available for consumer purchase at Fry's Electronics, Electronics Boutique and Best Buy. The ELSA Gladiac add-in card was on store shelves on April 28, 2000, just three days after NVIDIA's GeForce2 GTS announcement. This immediate availability sets a new standard for the PC graphics industry.

In addition, desktop PC OEMs Gateway and micronpc.com are now shipping high-end systems complete with the new GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Creative Labs, Leadtek, Guillemot, ASUSTeK, as well as Dell, Compaq, Quantex and Hewlett-Packard will announce GeForce2 GTS-based solutions and shipping dates during the upcoming weeks.

nVidia maakte tevens bekend dat het een OEM kameraadschap met NEC afgesloten heeft.

Jon Simon van Sharky Extreme heeft een (gelukkig redelijk korte) preview van de Matrox G450 online gemikt. De G450 is een opgevrolijkte G400, geproduceerd op een 0,18 ipv 0,25micron procédé en voorzien van een hogere core clock en sneller DDR geheugen. De geheugenbus is echter versmalt naar 64-bit, waardoor het performance voordeel van DDR SDRAM al weer teniet wordt gedaan:

The G400 uses a 128-bit memory bus connected to 16 or 32MB of SDR memory. With the G450, Matrox decided to use a 64-bit memory bus connected to 32MB of DDR memory. By narrowing the memory bus, Matrox does not have to run as many wires between memory and the G450 processor. This gives Matrox more leeway in board design and lets them use less layers in their PCB, which saves Matrox manufacturing costs. By using DDR memory, Matrox can do this without reducing memory bandwidth. Another advantage of a 64-bit memory bus is better memory granularity. With a 64-bit memory bus, the minimum amount of memory Matrox can use is half that of a card with a 128-bit memory bus. As memory module density increases to the gigabit range, this will turn into a major cost savings. At this time, we do not know whether the G450 will come with SDRAM or SGRAM. Matrox will most likely choose which kind of memory depending on pricing and availability.

Chris Tom / AMD Zone kreeg van Van Smith / Tom's Hardware een mailtje met het bericht dat hij op een GeForce2 presentatie een Dell bak met Athlon stickertje tegen was gekomen :

I don't know if this means anything or not, but last week at NVIDIA's GeForce2 GTS bash, I found a Dell system with a large Athlon sticker slapped on its front. When I asked NVIDIA about this, the guy said something like "Oh yeah, that's the new Dell Athlon system," and he walked away. A few moments later he ran back out and removed the sticker explaining that he made a mistake and that the system actually contained a PIII.

By the way, all of the systems demonstrating the new video cards based on the GeForce2 were Athlon based.

Waarschijnlijk wil het niet veel zeggen, maar het is wel grappig om te zien dat de Athlon stevig gepromoot wordt. Op de CeBIT konden we ook al geen poot verzetten zonder tegen een Athlon systeem aan te lopen.

Ome Tom en zijn vriendje Patrick Schmid hebben het tweede deel gepost van hun 150MHz Project, waarin zij de performance van een BX plank op 100, 133 en 150MHz onderzochten. De benchmarks leverden interessante resultaten op: een PIII 600/150 is in de Expendable Timedemo bijna evensnel als de PIII 750/100. In Quake III scoort een PIII 900 met 150MHz bus hoger dan de 1GHz PIII op 133MHz FSB! Vooral games blijken voordeel te hebben van een hogere geheugen bandwidth en dat schept hoge verwachtingen wat betreft de mogelijkheden van DDR SDRAM:

Looking at the Quake III results we can really look forward to first systems using DDR SDRAM. As this kind of memory is able to transfer data by using both edges of the clock signal, we will see the memory performance doubling. I expect most bandwidth-intensive games to run at least two speed grades faster. This means that a Pentium III 800/133 using DDR memory could perform at least as fast as a Giga-Pentium at 133 MHz SDR. This will hopefully bring us even more performance for the same amount of money, as DDR memory is not supposed to be significantly more expensive than PC133 SDRAM.

De relatief trage bus van de Pentium III blijft dan wel een probleem. PC2100 DDR SDRAM blijft tamelijk zinloos wanneer de bandwidth van de bus beperkt blijft tot 1,06GB/s.

Andy van BXBoards liet mij per mail weten dat-ie een review van de Gigabyte GA-7VX moederplank online heeft gezet. Dit KX133 plankje heeft de standaard KX133 layout met 5xPCI, 1xAMR, 1xISA en 3xDIMM. Het AMR slot is helaas wat ongelukkig tussen het ISA en laatste PCI slot, waardoor ongebruikte ruimte overblijft die beter tussen AGP en eerste PCI slot benut had kunnen worden. De plank heeft 9 busspeeds, variërend van 100 tot 143MHz. Helaas zijn alleen 100, 110 en 115MHz bruikbaar, de overige 6 hogere snelheden zijn instabiel. Afgezien daarvan is 115MHz stabiel natuurlijk helemaal niet slecht, hoewel het de vraag is of dit bij alle GA-7VX exemplaren het geval is. De ervaring leert dat dit per plank nogal sterk kan verschillen:

The BIOS does not offer much in the way of overclocking supprt, but this is offered and supported by the board via a 4 DIP switches. Selection is not massively extensive with the usual settings of 110 and 115Mhz on offer, but nothing in between those speeds. As many Athlon owners prefer to use "GoldFinger" devices to increase the clock multiplier on their chips and forego bus overclocking this is not a huge issue, but the lack of any intermediate speeds between 100 and 110Mhz is a bit of a blow.

A plus side is that overclocked stability is good, with both 110 and 115 Mhz being 100% stable with our test 0.18u micron Athlon. Anything past 115Mhz was a no-no, but overall the board is one of the most stable Athlon bus overclockers we've seen to date. There are no voltage tweaks on the board, and although we've seen this feature creeping in to Gigabyte boards via their "magic booster" option, this was not present on our test board.
