* The Dock has been dramatically enhanced: new features include in-dock QuickTime movie play, listing of items in docked Finder items (disks, folders -- this may later be enhanced to include archives like .sits!) by holding the mouse down over them, and many others.
* The Finder has been tweaked to be more OS9-like; when the default file browser is closed, windows will independently spawn just as in the classic Mac OS.
* The File Browser has been streamlined to take up less screen real estate and further improve simplicity. Expect lots of sneak-peeks on the Apple Web site soon....
* The new PowerMac G4 has been unveiled -- and yes, they made it to 733MHz! Default configurations are single-processor and start at 466MHz. High-end models can be made Build-To-Order with dual processors (presently only a dual 533MHz system is offered)!
* At long last, the PowerMac will now have five slots
* The new systems will come with the long-rumored Pioneer CD/DVD drive/burner that will be able to create consumer-playable DVDs! These machines are going to sell like hotcakes.
* The new PowerMacs will start at $1699. The 733MHz Best model will be $3499.
* As predicted, the new PowerMacs have a 133MHz bus, 4X AGP, a new audio system, and high-end models will include an nVidia GeForce 2MX graphics accelerator!
* Steve warns, however, that the 733MHz model will be in very short supply, so get your order in soon....
* OS X will be released on March 24 for $129, and will be bundled with new Macs by July -- Macworld New York in July will be a celebration of the new Mac OS.
* The 15-inch flat panel display is now $799, down $200.
* As expected, Apple is announcing a new audio application, including a powerful new CD burning application that is much easier to use than many common competitors and will be able to burn a track a time, rather than the one-shot limitation that many burning apps are stuck with. The new app is called iTunes and it also plays CD and MP3 audio. Steve demonstrated a very impressive visualizer (component which interprets sound wave data into fractals and other mesmerizing visuals) included in iTunes -- the crowd went wild!
* iTunes is available for immediate download from Apple.com, runs on OS9
* iDVD is the new DVD application, can encode the MPEG-2 video for burning to DVD in only 2X the length of the movie on G4s using the power of the Velocity engine -- compared to around 25X for other encoders!
* And the moment we've all been waiting for -- the new Powerbook G4. It's one inch thick in a beautiful titanium enclosure, sports up to a 500MHz G4, has a 15.2-inch screen, weighs 5.3 pounds, employs RAGE 128 Mobility graphics, and offers up to five hours of battery life! Firewire, Airport, up to 1GB of RAM, available at the end of the month....
* Steve compares the PBG4 to the Sony Vaio -- the Vaio subnotebook is $50 more, isn't as thin as the G4, isn't as fast, doesn't have CD/DVD, and has no wireless LAN options.
* Steve is wrapping up now (1:45 EST) and seems to targeting the people (particularly investors) who are worried about Apple's business future....exuding a lot of confidence that the issues are being dealt with and that everything is on track.
