Anand laat in een blurb op de frontpage van AnandTech los dat de AMD Duron niet sneller zal zijn dat de huidige K75 Athlon, zoals sommigen verwachten:

Just to clear things up a bit, don't expect the AMD Duron (Spitfire) to completely wipe the floor with the current Athlons. So you Athlon owners don't have to worry about your systems being outperformed by a low-cost part, at least on a clock for clock basis. The performance will be close, but not a blowout on the part of the Duron as it seems to have been publicized.

EBN Online meldt dat S3 plannen heeft om MP3 spelers te introduceren voor gebruik in huis en in de auto. Het eerste nieuwe produkt is de Rio Receiver, waarmee MP3'tjes vanaf de computer naar ontvangers in huis gebeamed worden. Het tweede produkt is de Rio Jukebox, een MP3 speler die gebruikt kan worden als auto radio. De Rio Jukebox is uitgerust met een verwisselbare harddisk. Verder heeft S3 aangekondigd dat het bedrijven zoekt die een licentie willen nemen op de Rio MP3 technologie:

S3, Santa Clara, Calif., said the company will seek licensees for its Rio MP3 audio player technology to design third-party clones of its Rio player. In addition, the company said it plans to announce and ship Rio-compatible devices for the home and car in coming months.

[...] S3 also plans a Rio Receiver, a wireless-enabled device that can access MP3 files stored on a user's hard drive somewhere within the home. Bij Chick's Hardware hebben ze een review geproduceerd van de Cool Master CoolDrive DCD-4002 hardeschijfkoeler. Hij blijkt wel goed te presteren en naast dat ziet hij er ook nog niet zo slecht uit :

Volgens die informatie die The Register van enkele PC leveranciers kreeg toegespeeld is er op dit moment sprake van een vermindering van de Athlon en Pentium III leveringstekorten. Voor kleine leveranciers blijft het moeilijk om aan voldoende processors te komen. Verwacht wordt dat de geheugenprijzen opnieuw zullen dalen door de leveringstekorten:

Supplies of Intel Celerons at 500MHz and 600MHz processors are still constrained, according to one major PC vendor, but Pentium III 600MHz and 733MHz Coppermines are now widely available, the firm said.

It is a different situation for AMD's Athlon microprocessor. At speeds below 750MHz, there is a shortage and this is caused both by large tier one PC vendors selling more machines using this chip, and also the current move by the firm to the Duron and Thunderbird platforms.

However, there is plentiful supply for Athlons at clock speeds of between 800MHz and 950MHz. The lion's share of 1GHz Athlons is still being shipped to Gateway, according to the source.

Merill Lynch meldt in een rapport over de winstverwachting van AMD voor het tweede kwartaal dat AMD momenteel al gestopt is met de produktie van K75 Athlon cores. Dit brengt vanzelfsprekend een groot risico met zich mee als er iets fout gaat met de produktie van nieuwe Thunderbird en Duron cores. Volgens AMD verloopt de overgang naar de Thunderbird in zowel Austin als Dresden voorspoedig:

Characteristically, AMD's approach to ramping both products is all or nothing. We were somewhat surprised to hear that AMD has already stopped all wafer starts of the older Athlon product. That means that all of the older Athlon products will be gone from AMD's sales mix by the end of the current quarter - AMD told us that all of the products in production have already been spoken for. If the production ramp of the new products goes well, AMD's product mix will be substantially more competitive a quarter from now than it is now. If there are any problems, the financial impact will be substantial. Our talk with AMD Friday revealed no problems - indeed, the early yields on Thunderbird at both the Austin fab and the copper interconnect fab in Dresden have been encouraging - but investors will need to track the situation closely.

[...] AMD finds itself in the unique situation of being able to ramp production of a high-performance PC microprocessor with essentially no interference with Intel, which is struggling to ramp its own production capacity. We have seen AMD stumble on manufacturing execution before, and given the challenges that AMD faces over the next two quarters we need to monitor AMD's progress closely. However, the other big problem that AMD has always faced in the past - ruinous competition from Intel - is not a problem right now. Omdat AMD de produktie niet kan verhogen wegens de beperkte capaciteit in Austin verwacht Merill Lynch voor het tweede kwartaal een omzet van 1,146 miljard dollar, wat nauwelijks meer is dan de $1,092 miljard van het eerste kwartaal. Nu.nl schrijft dat de Buma/Stemra een postorderbedrijf heeft opgerold dat via internet op grote schaal illegale CD's verkocht. De eigenaar was een De 54-jarige eigenaar uit Horn.

In de bedrijfsruimte van de man werden digitale kopieerapparatuur (een computer en vijf cd-branders), enkele duizenden moederproducten en een kleine 10.000 blanco cd's in beslag genomen.

De man bood op internet cd's aan met daarop muziek, videospelletjes, zakelijke software, boeken, tijdschriften en films. Hij vroeg prijzen oplopend van vijftien tot negentig gulden.

Vroeger ging het om een product van matige kwaliteit, dat via mond tot mond reclame onder kleine kring verdeeld werd. Winbond Electronics has put forward a conservative estimate of $7.2 for 64Mb DRAM chips by the end of 2000. By contrast, "hopeful officials" at Micron Semiconductor yesterday suggested to Taiwan's Commercial Times that prices could top $20.

Meanwhile, a Winbond exec indicated that supply of 64Mb DRAMs would probably fall 20 per cent short of demand this year, and fare worse in 2001. Both Winbond and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) are trying to upgrade to 0.18-micron manufacturing technologies from 0.2-micron to make 64Mb DRAMs – cutting the volume of DRAMs they can produce.

WebWereld schrijft net in dit bericht dat de onderhandelingen tussen Van Dam van de "Verontruste Startpagina-dochters" en IDG samen met Veronica op niets zijn uitgelopen. De twee mediagiganten gaan nu zelf verder met Favoriet.nl terwijl Van Dam kleinere spelers zoals Boogo en Pagetostart bij elkaar probeert te brengen voor zijn Startpagina2.nl (zie ook dit bericht). Hieronder wat meer info:

De onderhandelingen met IDG en Veronica liepen volgens Van Dam mis omdat hij het gevoel had niet serieus te worden genomen. "Er was veel onduidelijkheid en vaagheid over de medezeggenschap. Wij willen meedenken, maar dat kwam in hun voorstel niet voor." Daarbij kwam nog dat Van Dam vond dat hij onder druk werd gezet. Het voorstel van Favoriet.nl moest hij naar eigen zeggen direct doormailen aan alle (huidige of inmiddels weggelopen) Startpagina-dochters.

Joppe van der Reijden – directeur van Veronica Digitaal - vindt de bezwaren niet op hun plaats: "In ons voorstel is juist ruim plaats voor eigen inbreng. Maar verder maakt het voor onze plannen niets uit. Van Dam kan niet voor andere webmasters bepalen wat zij gaan doen." Nick van Leeuwen van IDG vult hierop aan: "Het is jammer, maar niet meer dan dat. Ik denk wel dat Van Dam zijn achterban tekort doet. Betrokkenheid is juist een van pijlers van het plan."

Startpagina-eigenaar VNU is nog in onderhandeling over wederzijdse rechten en plichten met de dochterbeheerders, die zich niet bij Van Dam hebben aangesloten. Hoeveel mensen Van Dam nog achter zich heeft, is onduidelijk.

Hilko kwam een link brengen naar C|NET waar gemeld wordt dat Microsoft van plan is om support voor vingerafdruk-scanners in nieuwe Windows OS-en te stoppen als vervanging voor het normale wachtwoord. MS gaat hiervoor gebruik maken van de Biometric API van het bedrijf I/O Software.

Biometric technology matches stored 2D and 3D images of an individual's body parts with the person. These systems often can compensate for aging, weight gain and other variations. The sheer volume of topographic data captured on a typical stored image also serves to deter fraud: Wearing a Bill Clinton mask won't likely get someone past a biometric firewall.

"We always strive to provide the most advanced security technology that we can offer," said Shanen Boettcher, a product manager at Microsoft. "This is an example of us responding to both customer demand and industry momentum."

Microsoft's decision to integrate biometric technology into the operating systems is a win for the futuristic security, which has generally been considered too expensive and difficult to implement. Several companies, including Compaq Computer, have promoted biometrics with little success. By adding biometrics directly into the operating systems, Microsoft will potentially lower the hurdles.

Hardware Zone heeft een interview gepost met Doug Hopkins, Multimedia Technologist bij Creative Labs. Uiteraard gaat het vooral over de nieuwe 3D Annihilator 2 alhoewel de meeste info min of meer al wel bekend was. Hieronder een gedeelte:

DukeRem: We recently interviewed some guys at 3dfx. They are quite sure that T&L is not the way to go, since CPUs are more and more powerful, and so they can handle all the geometry calulations in modern games, without loosing speed. They are focusing on FSAA (full scene anti aliasing), and on a very high fill-rate, obtained with more processors in parallel. What do you think about these two currents of thought? Will there be an hardware FSAA in future nVidia chips, as well?

Doug: The current NV10 (GeForce256) and NV15 (GeForce2 GTS) both support FSAA in Hardware using the Super-Sampling technique. 3DFX has stated this position since they have not been able to develop a mature T&L process yet. Their T-Buffer approach is destined to fail -- it is a very old technique (the T-Buffer is nothing more than parallel Accumulation buffer). Also, to get significant quality improvement, we need to get to 4x4 Sub-Pixel Anti-Aliasing -- which at the current time is a true memory bandwidth limitation. The 2x2 T-Buffer approach from 3DFX is totally inadequate.

GamePC heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40, een zeer snelle ATA/66 harddisk met 7200rpm en een 2meg buffer. De reviewer was er dan ook zeer over te spreken:

The numbers posted by the drive vaporized our comparison drive from Quantum in both FAT32 and NTFS. We especially like the numbers under the Winbench beginning to end test. For a 30GB drive, the drive stayed above 20K all the way through which is fairly rare to see these days. Since the Quantum drive used in comparison had very similar specs to the Maxtor drive, we can conclude that the DualWave processor architecture does in fact play a major role for performance improvement.

On a side note though, during operation we noticed that the drive ran much warmer then previous Maxtor drives we tested in the past. Though we doubt that the heat coming from the drive will cause problems with regards to its lifetime, it will however slightly increase the internal temperature of your computer.

Bij Savage2000.com hebben ze voor de derde keer de TnL performance van de Viper II onderzocht. De resultaten zijn nog steeds erg bedroevend, meestal is TnL in de software sneller op een Pentium II 400 dan in hardware op de kaart. En als je toch TnL aan hebt staan krijg je een enorme slechter beeld:

It seems that there has been no performance increase at all in either non-T&L or T&L. In fact the performance has gone down by a small amount. So why are these drivers called "T&L-enabled" (at least that's what Jim-Hafner Eaton said) if they have the same or worse T&L performance as the old registry-hacked drivers? Well, it seems that S3 has done little to actually fix the OpenGL T&L unit in these drivers. It looks like all they've done is make a cute little graphical interface in ICT that just turns T&L on in the registry, something Viper II users have been doing for months now. Well, they didn't get that fast one by me.

OpenGL games still have awful clipping/corruption/texture problems with Viper II T&L enabled. D3D T&L doesn't seem to be usable at all. So why all of these driver releases? The drivers have done little for performance and seem to have been only for fixing issues with various games and hardware, something we still have, I might add. So will they be able to really enable T&L, the way we expect them to? I don't know the answer to that and only time can tell.
