Webwereld schrijft dat Nederlandse bedrijven volgens een onderzoek van IDC na Duitse en Zweedse ondernemingen in Europees koploper zijn in e-commerce. Nederland profiteert volgens het onderzoek van de beheersing van de Engelse taal, het hoge aantal thuiscomputers en een goede infrastructuur:

Volgens een in opdracht van Cisco uitgevoerd onderzoek door IDC gaat het in ons land goed met het zakendoen via internet. Na Zweden en Duitsland kent de Nederlandse groep van kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen het hoogste aantal zogeheten 'Fasttrackers', bedrijven die intensief gebruikmaken van internettechnologie.

IDC onderzocht in totaal 2500 ondernemingen met 20 tot 250 werknemers in Duitsland, Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië, Italië, Nederland en Zweden. In Nederland behoort 15 procent van deze ondernemingen tot de Fasttracker-categorie, die op het punt staan op succesvolle wijze via het web zaken te doen. IDC heeft het over de 'Amazons en Yahoos van morgen'.

Voordat we met z'n allen beginnen te springen van blijdschap moeten we ons bedenken bij het feit dat de ICT achterstand van Europa volgens een gisteren gepubliceerde studie van adviesbureau Booz-Allen & Hamilton nog steeds toeneemt ten opzichte van de VS en Japan.

World Online meldt dat Samsung in mei een dualband GSM met ingebakken MP3 player op de markt brengt. Het apparaatje heeft een 32MB SmartMedia kaart en kan middels een infrarood poort met een PC of laptop babbelen (thanks Arnold voor de tip):

De Samsung MP3 Phone (SGH-M100)is een volledig uitgeruste dualband mobiele telefoon met een bijgeleverde 32 MB flash memory SmartMedia-kaart die ongeveer 25 minuten muziek kan bevatten. Voor het opslaan van muziek of andere bestanden via pc of laptop op de SmartMedia kaart bevat de telefoon een infraroodverbinding (IrDA).

Met de bijgeleverde koptelefoon kan geschakeld worden tussen telefoon en MP3-speler. Wanneer er tijdens het luisteren naar muziek een telefoontje binnenkomt, schakelt het apparaat automatisch over. Hextrasher schrijft: "UPC laat buiten het eigen Chello geen andere providers toe op haar kabelnetwerk. De kosten zouden ze er anders niet uit kunnen halen ofzoiets onzinnigs":

Kabelbedrijf UPC heeft bekend gemaakt dat het geen andere internetproviders dan het eigen Chello op zijn kabelnetwerken toelaat. UPC rechtvaardigt dit beleid met het argument dat het bedrijf erg veel moet investeren om de netwerken geschikt te maken voor zowel het ontvangen als verzenden van data. Terwijl het nog meer dan anderhalf jaar duurt voordat de X-Box zijn marktintroductie maakt meldt MCVNow.com dat Microsoft al weer ideeën heeft over een opvolger. Software opperhoofd Bill Gates voorspelt dat deze X-Box 2 in het jaar 2005 het levenslicht ziet:

Om nog even terug te komen op het 1GHz artikel van dokter Tom (zie deze posting van Robin): Tom laat daar wegglippen dat de AMD Thunderbird een 256-bit brede bus naar de L2 cache krijgt, vier keer zo veel als de huidige Athlon. Neem daarbij de hogere kloksnelheid en je krijgt een bruut snelle L2 cache. Rekensommetje voor de 1GHz Athlon met 333MHz cache:

64/8 * 333 = 2,664GByte/s
256/8 * 1000 = 32GByte/s

Hoppa! Uit Tom's artikel begrijp ik dat de Coppermine eveneens een 256-bit breed pad naar de L2 cache heeft. De Coppermine maakte destijds een behoorlijke sprong ten opzichte van de Katmai (ook in FPU performance), dus dat geeft hoop voor de Thunderbird (er wordt gespeculeerd over een snelheidstoename van 20 tot 30%).

ThE ChOsEn OnE bezorgde ons deze link naar Nu.nl waar wordt gemeld dat het Duitse Oneline met succes een proef heeft uitgevoerd voor internet via het elektriciteitsnet. Helaas is de snelheid nog nauwelijks beter dan dat van een telefoonlijntje en moeten er nog een aantal problemen gefixt worden. Zo kan het zijn dat je magnetron en je föhn interventies veroorzaken . In 2001 zou in heel Europa deze vorm van intenettoegang gerealiseerd moeten zijn.

Bij internet via het stopcontact wordt er niet meer gesproken over downloadsnelheid; in theorie bepaalt de snelheid van de computer hoe snel data kunnen worden binnengehaald. De proef met de nieuwe technologie struikelde nu echter nog over de snelheid, die niet veel hoger lag dan die van een snelle telefoonaansluiting.

De reden hiervoor is dat Oneline de elektriciteitstoevoer in de huizen moest afschermen omdat apparaten als magnetrons en haardrogers voor interferenties zorgden. Voor dit euvel moet nog een technische oplossing worden gezocht.

Internet via het elektriciteitsnet blijft een zeer interessante nieuwe ontwikkeling. Ieder huis beschikt immers over elektriciteit, wat niet geldt voor kabel-TV of telefoonkabels. En bovendien is het met deze techniek mogelijk om op elke gewenste plek in huis toegang tot internet te krijgen; alleen een stopcontact is vereist.

Bij Sharky Extreme is een review online gemikt van de Sony CPD-L181, een 18,1" LCD schermpie die je een dollartje of 3.000 gaat kosten. Als je zo'n ding op je bureau mag planten ben je best wel een popi jopie, alleen moet je wel kunnen leven met de nadelen zoals max 24-bit kleur en een vaste resolutie van 1280x1024. Toch wel een leuk voor naast je G500 .

Frankly, we love the CPD-L181 and I'm going to be sad to see it leave my desk. Not even half a ton of lutefisk would cheer me up. While it has a few disadvantages when compared to a good CRT (average color and a hardwired resolution), the advantages (sharpness, small footprint, easy on the eyes, low power, etc.) more than make up for it. At about $3000, it's far from cheap though, and UXGA LCDs (1400x1050) are right around the corner. Overall, Sony's CPD-L181 LCD is a fantastic monitor that we'd replace our CRTs with in a second...if we could afford it.

The Sydney Morning Herald schrijft dat Microsoft Australië afgelopen vrijdag bij de release van de X-Box een kleine blunder heeft gemaakt. MS Aussie meende dat de X-Box van een Athlon processor voorzien was, dit terwijl ome Bill op het laatste moment een deal met Intel was aangegaan:

Microsoft Australia has been forced into an embarrassing about-face after naming the wrong supplier of computer chips for its forthcoming TV-game machine, the X-Box.

[...] Last week various US computer news sites were quoting "unnamed sources" as saying Microsoft had chosen Intel's Pentium III chip for the X-Box, which will go up against Sony's PlayStation2, Sega's Dreamcast and a yet-to-be released successor to the Nintendo64.

But surprised Australian journalists were told by Microsoft Australia's marketing director, Mr Peter Cray, during a telephone conference call at 2pm on Friday, that AMD had won the contract.

"AMD put forward a great processor which was suited to what we're trying to do with X-Box," Mr Cray said. "We'll continue to deal with Intel on a range of other products."

What Mr Cray did not know was that Intel had swooped with an 11th-hour proposal, snatching the deal away from AMD. He confirmed yesterday that Microsoft had signed with Intel "at the last minute". "The last we heard was AMD. It was down to the wire."

The Tech Zone brengt ons een review van de Sony CPD-G500 beeldkanon. Deze 21 incher heeft een 0,24mm aperture grill en een maximale resolutie van 2048x1536 bij 75Hz. Klein nadeel kunnen de damper wires vormen die standaard bij Trinitron beeldbuizen geleverd worden .

The picture quality of the CPD-G500 is the best I've ever seen in any monitor. The thing that really stands out is small text. Even 6pt text is super sharp and totally readable. By contrast, all the shadow mask monitors we compared it to look blurry and out of focus. Colors were bright and saturation was perfect. The rendering of black was deeper than anything a shadow mask monitor can achieve. Thanks to its flat tube, there was no distortion of any kind near the corners of the monitor.

The CPD-G500 is not without fault. The main problem I have with it are the two damper wires used in the making of the Trinitron tube. These two wires are visible when a white background is shown. It's not that distracting but once you notice it, you tend to keep looking at it. The other problem I experienced with the CPD-G500 is once you get use to it, looking at any other monitors is like looking at a fish bowel! I had no idea my old Optiquest was that curved!

Good Old Tom heeft zijn artikel over de 1GHz Athlon en Pentium III eindelijk af gekregen. Net als eerdere reviews komt Tom tot de conclusie dat de Athlon 1000MHz (in tegenstelling tot de Pentium III) vanwege de L2 cache divider van 1/3 niet echt geweldig scaled. Wel is het zo 1GHz Pentium III systeem nog zo goed als onleverbaar zijn, zeker aan deze kant van de oceaan. AMD is aan de andere kant al vrolijk bezig met het bakken van haar Giga-Athlon .

AMD has no reason to feel bad though. It's not only nice to see that Giga-Athlon performs best in the majority of the SPECviewperf and FPU benchmarks. In the rest of the tests Giga-Athlon is certainly not exactly far behind Giga-Pentium III as well. Keep this in mind when you realize that Intel can hardly ship any gigahertz Pentium III processors. While Intel has not even got enough processors in the area between 800 and 1000 MHz to release Pentium III 866 and 933, and Europe is bar of any 1 GHz PIII sample altogether, AMD is equipping the press as well as its OEMs with gigahertz Athlons. If you really think that you need a Giga-System, the decision will be very easy. Athlon Gigas are actually available, Pentium III Gigas are a simple phantom. You cannot buy what isn't there, can you? Let's see if Intel has successfully impacted AMD's business by releasing the Pentium III at 1 GHz prematurely. Intel's plan might have been to damage AMD's sales by releasing a phantom product at a very low price. If this phantom product doesn't soon become reality however, Intel's plan might backfire. I wonder if Craig Barret (or was it Kyle after all?) will succeed with this boasting policy.

Bij AnandTech is een 28 pagina tellende Ultra ATA-66 harddisk roundup geplaatst met daarin twee 5400rpm modellen en vier 7200rpm versies. De IBM Deskstar 34GXP (zelfde als de WD Expert alleen minder duur) kwam als winnaar uit de bus met de Seagate Barracuda als goede tweede. De Quantum en Maxtor modellen bleven beide achter.

As for this round up, four of the drives were 7200-RPM units, with the two 5400-RPM units falling far short in terms of performance. As mentioned above, the 7200-RPM units simply send the slower drives to the bottom of the heap, so unless you can get a great deal on one of them and you are simply looking for the most storage space for the dollar, we would recommend going with a 7200-RPM unit. So with that said, and the fact that this review is about performance, we are left to choose among the remaining four contenders. The IBM Deskstar 34GXP and Western Digital Expert 25.7 are virtually clones of one another, so the choice between those two drives simply comes down to price. While the Quantum drive turned in respectable results and held its own in many of the tests, it just didn’t run away with any of them or shine by itself enough to be considered a top candidate. It turned in average results and should be considered an average drive. This, coupled with the fact that it is one of the higher priced drives of the group, leaves it out as a candidate for the top spot. With the IBM Deskstar 34 GXP and WD Expert taking top honors in most of the charts, and with the Seagate Barracuda running away with the disk transfer tests, your overall choice becomes fairly obvious. If you do a lot of video and/or sound editing, or frequently perform other tasks that require a lot of sustained data transfers, the Seagate Barracuda ATA would be the way to go.

"Eerst moeten die pixel-trapjes weg, dan is de tijd rijp voor T&L" :

GameFan: The buzz on the Internet seems to be centered around Hardware T&L; releases from Nvidia, Matrox, and even ATI are offering support. Currently, no game offers full support, but does 3dfx see any benefit of Hardware T&L in its future technology projects?

BB: We do have a plan for geometry processing. We just think that the problem of FSAA needs to be solved before T&L. Adding more triangles just adds more "jaggies." The benefit of T&L is to allow you to add more triangles and finer details. We think that those details should look right, and not have artifacting that distracts from the playing experience. We know T&L is important, but we do not think that it will matter if the T&L is done by the graphics card or the CPU in the near term. When we have a geometry processor, it will be faster than the geometry available on CPUs.

Will the DSP be used only to accelerate MP3 playing, or will it be used also to accelerate A3D 3.0? Why did you decide to still use the Vortex 2? Is the Vortex 2 used for the SQ3500 a new revision of the chip?

David Gasior: The Turbo DSP will be used to do hardware reverb and hardware decode of Dolby Digital. All other features will be supported on the Vortex 2 chipset, which is more than capable to handle those tasks. At this time, hardware decoding of MP3 is not on the feature list, though the DSP architecture does not prevent us from considering it in a future driver release. We continued with the Vortex 2 chipset for a number of reasons, foremost that it is still a leading-edge piece of hardware. Instead of going after a completely new hardware design, we found a way to pair it up with new drivers and a DSP to create a very powerful, open technology base.

Voodoo Extreme meldt dat de Voodoo4 mogelijk toch FSAA support krijgt. Vanwege de relatief lage fillrate van de Voodoo4 en de enorme performance hit van FSAA wordt er voor de Voodoo4 waarschijnlijk gebruik gemaakt van anti-aliasing met 2 sub samples. Volgens Scott Sellers van 3dfx is de kwaliteit van 2x FSAA nog steeds 'really good':

The Voodoo5 will have 2 and 4 sample AA for sure. We are evaluating AA in our plans for the Voodoo4.

Josh van Penstar Systems kreeg de kans om Drew Prairie van AMD kort te interviewen tijdens de Game Developers Conference. Uit het gesprek werd onder meer duidelijk dat AMD verwacht dat de Thunderbird ten opzichte van de huidige Athlon een vergelijkbare performance boost krijgt als de K6-III destijds ten opzichte van de K6-2. Verder denkt AMD de capaciteit in Dresden waarschijnlijk volledig kunnen benutten voor de produktie van Thunderbirds en Mustangs:

Drew was tight lipped on how much cache the Athlon "Thunderbird" will actually have, but it is most likely going to be 256 K. When pressed Drew did say that they expected the same kind of performance increase that on-die L2 gave to the K6-2 processor. This will most likely come out to be about a 20% to 30% increase in performance all the way around. When the Thunderbird does come out, it will thoroughly slap around the Intel Coppermine. With AMD's experience with the K6-III and on-die cache, expect there to be a few technical surprises that will give a bit more of a performance edge. Mustang is quite a ways off, but will feature huge amounts of 16 way associative L2 cache on-die. Drew said that AMD was expecting the Thunderbird to be released second quarter and all Thunderbirds would be produced from Fab 30 in Dresden.

Uit ervaringen van Hardware One met het modificeren van een Promise Ultra66 controller blijkt dat er verschillende methodes zijn om Ultra66's RAID-gereed te maken. Bij de revisie A1 controller van Hardware One moest pin 23 mbv een 200 ohm weerstand met de aarde verbonden worden. Bij een A5 controller moet hiervoor een 100 ohm weerstand gebruikt worden:

For those of you unaware, despite trying out various modification methods posted on the web (grounding pin 23; connecting 100 ohm resistor between pin 16 & 23; connecting 100 ohm resistor between pin 23 and ground), I still couldn't get my Promise UATA66 -> FastTrack mod to work properly. On bootup, I would get a "blinking cursor of death". I really tried all means to rectify this - switching slots to eliminate IRQ conflicts, etc, but still in vain...

However, after much deliberation, I experimented by placing a 200 ohm resistor across pin 23 and ground instead. Bingo!! The FastTrack BIOS appeared on my startup screen and started scanning for IDE devices. Unconvinced, I actually resoldered a 100 ohm resistor as before, just to confirm this. Sure enough, it was only after I soldered back the 200 ohm resistor which enabled the hack to work on my board...

Now, my card is a revision A1 board. Compared to the rev A5 board loaned from Kai Ping, there seems to be significant changes (it does not possess a silver oscillator & hefty capacitors like rev A5). Hence, this may explain why 100 ohms works for some boards, but not for others (like mine). Seems that 100 ohms, may not be enough to give the necessary potential difference at pin 23 for a revision A1 board. I may use a bigger resistor for greater stability in the near future. However, I have yet to test how stable the board is in RAID, but more updates will follow shortly...Till then, I'll be "RAID-ing"..

Well, well, well. The numbers posted by Plextor showed us what real performance means when it comes to writing CDs. Just by comparing the numbers from our previous CD-R/W roundup, the 12/4/32 drive smoked the competition. Now we had our doubts in the beginning with regards to Plextor's claim in the drive's performance, yet it proved us very wrong. Things like thinking the drive would run super hot and having some sort of write errors when writing at 12x were totally false. When writing at 12x, we witnessed no problems whatsoever, even when writing about 2,000 small files totaling 643MB on to a 650MB disc. The drive also ran considerable cooler then previous 8x drives in the past, even during the 12x write testing. The small fan on the back, which pulls out air from inside the drive housing, can be thanked for that. On a sad note, when we tested all the supported speeds for audio CD creation, we found on that speeds written faster then 4x created playback problems. Those problems being small pops and clicks heard very clearly in a car's CD deck and in a normal computer CD-ROM drive. But as a whole, the drive does exactly what you expect it to do. Work without frustrating problems. Though we did notice Plextor only included a small pamphlet for their software and nothing for Adaptec's software. That may pose some sort of confusion for first timers starting off with this drive.

Meneer Mota van The Tech Zone heeft zijn ervaringen met een zelfgebouwd watercooling systeempje tot een artikeltje verwerkt. Dankzij waterkoeling was hij in staat om een Pentium III 550 tot 659MHz te pushen, maar liefst 14 megahertzen meer dan met luchtkoeling... dat schiet dus geen meter op. Er werd overigens geen peltier op de heatsink van de processor gebruikt:

Not much. A cooler CPU and a few more MHz overclocking on my PIII 550. I was already running air cooled at 645 before, so not much exciting in the way of overclocking. Keep in mind that I'm not super-cooling with Peltiers or anything. My CPU temperature depends totally on the water temperature. What I have noticed so far is when the CPU is idling it idles at the same temperature as the water temperature, and when it's running it runs around 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) hotter. Whether this is good or bad, I don't know. This is my first attempt at water cooling.

SYMPTOMS

When you install a Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 browser that was created using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) version 5, which includes the 128-bit encryption component (Ie5dom.exe), you may receive the following error message:

"System cannot log you on because domain Computername is not available."

where Computername is the name of the local computer you are trying to log on to.

NOTE: This error message occurs the first time you restart the computer after you install Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are using an earlier version of the Rsaenh.dll and Schannel.dll files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

Do not install Internet Explorer 5 on a computer running Windows 2000. Windows 2000 includes Internet Explorer 5.01.

Use the IEAK to create a separate build of Internet Explorer that includes the latest 128-bit encryption update for Windows 2000 (Encpack.exe).

Do not include the /n:v switch if you use the Ie5dom.exe component to create a separate build of Internet Explorer.

NOTE: This issue does not occur if you include the Ie501dom.exe component in your Internet Explorer 5.01 package.

Naast een bespreking van de specs en features krijgen we info over compatibiliteitsproblemen en de games die voor de PS2 ontwikkelt worden. Hier een stukkie copy/paste over de Sony Emotion Engine, de 128-bits processor die het hart vormt van de PS2:

The 128-bit processor (also known as the "Emotion Engine") of the PS2 screams along at 294.912MHz. This is the central computer that handles all of a game's main mathematical computations. This is the chip that decides if your dragon punch hits its mark, if you have enough MP to call Leviathan, if your tires bounce off the car in front of you, or if Lara crosses the chasm or tumbles to her death. In most previous consoles, the CPU was also used for processing the graphics of the game. Slowdown occurred when the chip had too many things to do at once, and so all computations suffered as a result. But with nearly 300MHz to use and a dedicated graphics chip of its own, the PS2 is hoping to make slowdown a thing of the past. But there's no point in having the fastest car on the block if you've only got enough room in your gas tank to get you out of the driveway. Accordingly, the 32MB of memory means that the PS2 will have enough RAM to hold the layout of an entire virtual city, detailed information on who's currently doing what to whom, and how your meager existence is changing the flow of the digital world.
