Q: Inevitably, I will bring up T&L...we have all heard why you think it is not a "necessity" in the Voodoo4/Voodoo5 lineup. Here's my take on it - "I wish the Voodoo4/Voodoo5 have it. We may all (alright, not all then) say that it will not matter in the timeframe of the Voodoo4/Voodoo5's release but I'm looking beyond that...come on, if I spend some XXX amount of $$$ on a video card come 1st quarter of the year, I think for the next six months after getting it, T&L will matter in a number of (T&L) optimized games. Or is 3dfx saying T&L won't matter for the whole of the year? Obviously, it comes down to the "expected" lifespan of a certain video card...however, the majority do not change video cards every six months." How do you counter that?A: Video card technology is changing at a very rapid pace. At some point, you have to stop waiting for what is coming next and buy a product. Our job is to put the most complete and compelling product on the shelf when you decide to buy. The Voodoo 5 will be the most compelling product, even without the T & L capabilities of the graphics cards it will be competing with. Voodoo5 will be the most compelling product for the serious gamer for two reasons: the majority of the top games are fill-rate limited, and good full-scene AA is the best feature that you can add to improve image quality. The competing products with integrated geometry today don’t address either of these issues, as they’re not balanced solutions. Titles will become more complex in six months with even higher fill rate requirements, therefore those competing solutions will be even more fill-rate limited hence even more unbalanced than they are today. Clearly hardware T&L is important down the line, just not for this generation of products.
Verder heeft Scott het over de zaligheden van een schaalbare architectuur en de mogelijkheden van FSAA (full-scene anti-aliasing).
