There are fundamental differences in the way Novell and Microsoft designed and implemented their directory services solutions. While these differences are to be expected, and even applauded, they can also the cause of some confusion when the two directory approaches are compared. With Novell’s recent announcement of NDS 8’s general availability, the potential for misunderstanding has never been greater. Microsoft has been especially keen to make comparisons between NDS and Active Directory, but has failed to take into account the differences of approach between these two directory service solutions. The inaccuracies resulting from such comparisons are bound to mislead, and give some cause to question whether Microsoft fully understands Novell’s approach and implementation of directory technologies.
Novell offers this reality check to clear up any confusion readers may have when comparing Novell Directory Services (NDS) with Active Directory. [break] ...en Microsoft: [/break]
With Novell's release of NetWare version 5.0 and Novell Directory Service Version 1.2 (NDS), Microsoft is asked frequently to compare the Active Directory of Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server to NDS. Microsoft believes that customers are no longer looking for application-specific or limited-purpose directory services--they require directory technologies that can play a multipurpose role. For reasons outlined in this White Paper, Microsoft believes that Active Directory will meet the customer requirements of a multipurpose directory service much better than NDS. This makes Active Directory the best long-term directory service.
Zelf heb ik geen hout gegeten van deze stof, maar afgaande op de reakties van gisteren begrijp ik dat het een nogal het onderwerp is onder network operators.
