Op de site van F&L staat te lezen dat ondanks de al meerdere malen gemelde zwaar tegenvallende RIMM-verkopen Rambus Inc. toch een recordresultaat van ongeveer 17.8 miljoen dollar heeft binnengehaald. Dit hebben ze voor 37% te danken aan de licentie-verkopen. Rambus heeft in deze winst nog geen geld zitten van licentie-inkomsten van DDR-, SDR- en SDRAM-chips, dus waarschijnlijk zal daardoor de winst nog meer stijgen:

De Amerikaanse onderneming Rambus heeft in het afgelopen kwartaal inkomsten van rond de 17.8 miljoen dollar binnen gehaald, dit is een stijging van 13 procent tegenover het voorafgaande kwartaal en 67 procent hoger tegenover dezelfde periode van vorig jaar. Zomer stuurde verschillende Windows 2000 bugs in die via het IP-protocol verschillende problemen kunnen veroorzaken. Om te beginnen is er de mogelijkheid om 100% CPU-utilization te veroorzaken door een stroom binaire nullen te sturen naar een bepaalde poort:

Sending a stream of binary zeros to any one of a number of Windows 2000 ports can cause 100% CPU utilization. The ports that were found vulnerable include TCP ports 7, 9, 21, 23, 7778 and UDP ports 53, 67, 68, 135, 137, 500, 1812, 1813, 2535, 3456.

This can easily be reproduced from a Linux system using netcat with an input of /dev/zero, with a command such as "nc target.host 7 < /dev/zero" for the TCP variant or "nc -u target.host 53 < /dev/zero" for the UDP variant. News.com heeft een nieuwsartikel gepost met meer info over de produkten die ome Steve vandaag tijdens zijn Macworld optreden in New York heeft aangekondigd. De nieuwe 450 en 500MHz dual G4 PowerMacs worden geleverd tegen dezelfde prijs als de oude single CPU PowerMacs. Het grootste probleem vormt op dit moment de afwezigheid van software support. Velen hadden gehoopt dat de public beta van MacOS X vandaag gereleased of in ieder geval aangekondigd zou worden, maar dit is helaas niet gebeurd. Met het huidige MacOS heeft SMP-en weinig zin.

De PowerMac G4 Cube broodroostertjes zijn beschikbaar in twee versies met een 450 en 500MHz G4 processors. De prijs is 1799 dollar voor het 450MHz model en 2299 dollar voor de 500MHz Cube.

Aan de onderkant van Apple's produktlijn werd een donkerblauwe iMac met 350MHz G3, 64MB geheugen en een prijskaartje van $799 toegevoegd. De iMac DV kreeg een upgrade en is nu ook leverbaar met 450 en 500MHz G3's. Verder werden twee nieuwe flat panels en een nieuwe CRT monitor aangekondigd. EETimes meldt dat de DRAM produktie van Toshiba momenteel de overgang maakt van 128Mbit naar 256Mbit chips. De nieuwe 256Mbit produktielijnen werken met een 0,175 micron procédé en produceren DDR SDRAMs, FC-RAMs en RDRAMs. De DDR chips komen beschikbaar in kloksnelheden van 125 tot 143MHz en met een CAS latency van 2 of 2,5:

Toshiba is sampling nine types of DDR SDRAM, varying by configuration, clock speed, data transfer speed and latency. Data transfer rates range from 286 Mbits/second (143 MHz) to 200 Mbits/s (125 MHz), while column-address strobe (CAS) latency is either 2 or 2.5.

Backed by Intel as the next-generation PC main memory, Toshiba's RDRAMs will be offered in 800-, 711- and 600-MHz speed grades. The RDRAMs are available in both x16 and x18 configurations, with error correction. Toshiba's 256-Mbit generation RDRAMs must still be submitted to Intel for evaluation and validation, the spokesman said.

iXBT heeft een review gemaakt van de Asus CUSL2 een moederbord met een Intel i815 chipset. Het moederbord heeft enkele leuke extra's die ik verder nog niet gezien heb zoals maximaal 7 usb poorten (5 bijgeleverd). Dit doormiddel van 2 usb poorten op het moederbord en 3 op een riserkaartje. Er zit dan nog een uitbreidingspoort op het moederbord om het totaal op 7 te brengen. Ook is dit het eerste Asus bord dat het iPanel ondersteunt. Dit is een 5.25" kastje dat je handige informatie over je moederdord geeft en over het voltage en de temperatuur. Hier hun conclusie:

So, new ASUS CUSL2 on Intel 815 chipset proved a high quality product with beautiful overclocking capabilities, high reliability and a set of rather interesting features. In particular, we should mention iPanel and 7 USB ports support. The only thing that can prevent you from buying this product for upgrade purposes is its really high price. But it is Intel, which you should blame for that, because Intel failed to make i815 a low-cost solution.

Dit lijkt me tot nu toe een van de meest interresante i815 moederborden. Alleen jammer van de hoge prijs.

EETimes bericht dat VIA en Acer Labs in onderhandeling zijn met Intel over het verkrijgen van een P4 bus licentie voor het produceren van Pentium 4 chipsets. Volgens insiders is het niet onwaarschijnlijk dat Intel licenties afgeeft, omdat VIA en Acer Labs hiermee de mogelijkhied krijgen om DDR chipsets voor de Pentium 4 te ontwikkelen. De beperkte produktie van Rambus RIMMs zou hierdoor geen gevaar meer hoeven te vormen voor een succesvolle introductie van de Pentium 4. Intel kan zelf geen desktop chipsets met DDR support ontwikkelen omdat een lucratief dealtje met Rambus Inc. dit onmogelijk maakt:

"We don't believe there will be enough Rambus parts available, and that may hinder the Willamette launch," said Sherry Garber, memory analyst for Semico Research Corp. (Phoenix). "Intel will not sacrifice the Willamette launch in order to support Rambus, and the product just isn't there now."

That leaves Intel with the choice of licensing its new bus architecture to outside chip set vendors for use with DDR memory. They are already in the final test stages for Tehama, the Intel-designed chip set for the Willamette and RDRAM, and they have repeatedly stated that they will not design in-house a chip set for DDR memory. Indeed, Intel may be barred from supporting DDR by a 1997 deal with Rambus.

Bob Merritt, chip set analyst for Semico, said Via and ALI are the two most logical candidates to take on this task because they already produce Intel-compatible chip sets. A third possibility, Server Works, declined to comment on whether they are planning to enter that market.

Paul DeMone van RealWorld Technologies heeft een interessant artikel geschreven over de x86-64 instructieset van de AMD Sledgehammer. AMD's uitbreiding van de aloude x86 instructieset biedt naast een uitbreiding van de geheugen limiet en de mogelijkheid om 64-bit getallen te verwerken, ook een RISC-achtige toevoeging aan de instructieset genaamd 'Technical Floating Point'. Met TFP hoopt AMD de floating point prestaties van high-end RISC processors zoals de Alpha 21264 en Hewlett Packard PA-RISC te evenaren. Voor ons thuis tweakertjes zijn deze ontwikkeling interessant omdat een betere FPU performance bijvoorbeeld onze game experience kan enhancen:

On the upside the move to 64 bits will have negligible negative impact on the performance, manufacturability or cost of the K8, a high end MPU implemented with tens of millions of transistors. And x86-64 will offer an upgrade path to those rare x86 users who need 64-bit flat addressing. The K8 can offer that, but without the performance loss on legacy applications inherent to IA-64’s x86 compatibility mode. For most users, the K8’s TFP RISC-like FP extension may be of much more interest since it should provide eventual benefit for users of high performance 3D graphics applications, such as games. What K8’s 64-bitness and TFP provides to AMD is the means for it to counteract the huge advertising campaign that will accompany Intel’s push to move its customer base from X86 to IA-64, which will likely start in earnest in about two or three years. Finally, the recent intriguing patent disclosure by AMD also suggests that we cannot discount the possibility of a big surprise when K8 is introduced.

Gamers Depot heeft een review klaar van de Aopen PA256 Deluxe GeForce2 GTS kaart met TV-Out. Zoals bekend heeft dit model een speciale BIOS waarme je de kaart kan overklokken e.d. Voor de rest gewoon een standaard GeForce2 waar uiteraard niks mis mee is . Hieronder de conclusie:

Once again, we have a solid card with no weird quirks – at least with the hardware. This is probably a complaint that only a reviewer would have, but the one thing that bugged me about this package was the lack of uninstall capability for the OpenGPU utility. OpenGPU starts up when Windows loads, and then looks for the OpenBIOS on the graphics card. Even when I changed back to the Detonator reference drivers, the OpenGPU utility started looking for the BIOS. It’s not in the Startup directory, the Add/Remove control panel has no record of it, so dumping it requires a nice visit with RegEdit. When I have to change cards to test them out, this is a needless pain. For the normal user, this will be a big pain down the road if they install a new graphics card and the OpenGPU software starts making life difficult for them. The solution for fixing this is not very obvious to most people.

This is a decent card, and I expect the prices to be among the lower ones although I can’t confirm that right now. The OpenBIOS is an intriguing feature, but it’s up to the end-user to decide if that will make or break the purchase decision for them. If you are a real propeller-head, you will like this card for the tweak factor. If you don’t really want to mess with the card but want a GeForce2, you can pick just about any other card out there that we’ve reviewed so far. Again, with all the GeForce2 cards out there, it’s really just coming down to price and little features.

Er zijn weer eens wat grote beveiligingskraters ontdekt in Microsoft Outlook Express en Internet Explorer:

Nu.nl schrijft over een fout in outlook Express waardoor een virus verborgen kan worden in de datum- en tijdaanduiding van een e-mail. Het gevolg is dat de getroffen PC volledig door de hacker kan worden bestuurd zonder dat de mail daadwerkelijk geopend hoeft te worden:

Een potentiële hacker kan het virus verbergen in de datum- en tijdaanduiding van de elektronische post. Door extra cijfers en letters toe te voegen, geeft de computer een foutmelding.

Achter deze extra karakters kan een computerhacker een virus invoegen. Outlook houdt het schadelijke programma dan voor instructies van de gebruiker om de foutmelding op te heffen.

Daarna kan een hacker alles doen wat hij normaal gesproken met zijn eigen computer kan. De schade kan variëren van het verliezen van de internetverbinding tot het wissen van alle bestanden op de harde schijf. [break]WebWereld heeft het over een lek in Internet Explorer die door het System Administration Networking and Security Institute wordt omschreven als 'gevaarlijkste programmeerfout die Microsoft tot nu toe heeft gemaakt in de Windows werkstations'. Creatief gebruik van Visual Basic kan een kwaadwillend persoon toegang verschaffen tot iemands harde schijf:[/break] Het beveiligingslek stelt crackers in staat om gevaarlijke Visual Basic code in de databasebeheersoftware Microsoft Access te voegen via de Explorer-browser. Het probleem doet zich voor omdat de volgorde voor het openen van Access verkeerd om is: het programma wordt eerst geopend en pas daarna, als het al te laat is, wordt de gebruiker hiervoor toestemming gevraagd.

Om getroffen te worden door het probleem, is het openen van een website of het bekijken van een e-mail met HTML voldoende. De e-mail hoeft zelfs niet geopend te worden. Het lek is vooral gevaarlijk voor zakelijke gebruikers van Windows, omdat veel particuliere gebruikers Access niet geïnstalleerd hebben. Tot nu toe zijn nog geen gevallen van getroffen bedrijven bekend.

Het probleem geldt voor gebruikers van Windows 95, 98, 2000 en NT 4.0 die Microsoft Access 97 of 2000 geïnstalleerd hebben en werken met Internet Explorer 4.0 of hoger, inclusief 5.5.

Microsoft heeft nog geen echte oplossing bedacht. Geadviseerd wordt om een paswoord te zetten op Microsoft Access, zodat daar om gevraagd wordt zodra er vanuit Access een Visual Basic code wordt aangeroepen.

V0rtex stuurde ons een link naar dit Computable artikel waarin wordt verteld dat analisten niet onder de indruk van IE5.5 zijn. Uit de tests bleek de nieuwe versie niets sneller dan zijn voorgangers zoals wel werd beloofd door MS. De DHTML-mogelijkheden zijn alleen nuttig bedrijven die er intern gebruik van maken waardoor de enige nuttige nieuwe functie voor de consument de print-preview optie is:

Deze versie 5.5 voelt volgens Jim Rapoza van eWeek Labs aan als 'een .05 uptick'. Internet Explorer 5.5 is de eerste nieuwe versie van Microsofts browser sinds het bedrijf heeft aangekondigd een .Net bedrijf te willen worden.

De enige vooruitgang voor de gewone gebruikers is de 'print preview'-optie. Dat is nauwelijks genoeg om het installeren van IE 5.5 te verantwoorden, en ook nauwelijks baanbrekende technologie. Internet Explorer 5.5 is alleen interessant voor die bedrijven die intern gebruik willen maken van nieuwe Dhtml (Dynamic Html). Microsoft heeft diverse Dhtml-mogelijkheden toegevoegd, zoals componenten, schuifbalk en zoom-functies. Die verbeteringen leiden echter weer tot een verslechtering van de ondersteuning voor het DOM (Document Object Model), in tegenstelling tot Dhtml een geaccepteerde standaard.
Analisten zien het daarnaast aan de hand van sommige karakteristieken van IE 5.5 somber in voor het .Net-initiatief. Microsoft loopt achter wat betreft de ondersteuning van het XML-gebaseerde DOM. XML (Extensible Markup Language) moet ondertussen wel een van de peilers van .Net worden.

Microsoft stelt dat de nieuwe IE 5.5 een stuk sneller is dan voorgaande versies, maar tests boekstaven deze bewering niet. Tussen versie 5.0 en 5.5 zijn geen significante verschillen qua snelheid waar te nemen. Al net al is Internet Explorer 5.5 een enorme tegenvaller, zeker voor een release van een bedrijf dat zo onder vuur heeft gelegen, en wiens imago zo hard toe is aan een goede boost.

CNET neemt voor 1.6 miljard in aandelen van ZDNet over waardoor er een reus ontstaat op het gebied van internetnieuws. Volgens WebWereld zal de deal vandaag officieel aangekondigd worden:

De Amerikaanse zakenkrant meldt dat CNet eigenaar wordt van het tijdschrift Computer Shopper, de website SmartPlanet.com, en het netwerk van sites dat valt onder ZDNet.com. SmartPlanet.com is een webdienst voor zelfstudie over diverse onderwerpen.

De overname betekent voor CNet een belangrijke zet op de internationale markt. Het Amerikaanse bedrijf was al actief in Azië en zette onlangs met de opening van een kantoor in Zwitserland de eerste stap op de Europese markt. ZDNet is naast Noord-Amerika actief in Zuid-Amerika, Azië en Europa, onder meer in Nederland.

Apple heeft vandaag op de Macworld in New York een aantal nieuwe produkten aangekondigd, waaronder de PowerMac G4 Cube, Apple Pro Keyboard en buttonloze Apple Pro Mouse waarover eerder door MacOS Rumors en Apple Insider gespeculeerd werd. De PowerMac G4 Cube wordt tussen de iMac en PowerMac gepositioneerd.

Verder wordt de prijs van de iMacs verlaagd en wordt er een nieuwe donkerblauw model geïntroduceerd. De 450 en 500MHz PowerMacs zijn vanaf nu voorzien van twee processors. Apple hoopt hiermee de achterstand op de snelle Athlon en PIII processors goed te maken, wat ook duidelijk wordt in de speerpunten van Apple's nieuwe propaganda strategie. Saint Steve liet in zijn Macworld keynote een demootje zien waarin een dual G4 sneller was dan een 1GHz Pentium III. Er viel net een mail in m'n Outlook over deze ATi Radeon review van Planet Hardware waarbij uitsluitend gebruik is gemaakt van AMD testsystemen (Duron 700 & Athlon 900). Er waren in het begin wat problemen met de VIA GART driver en met de Expendable Direct3D demo, maar voor de rest bleek de performance niks tegen te vallen. Een GeForce2 werd goed bijgehouden en weer verslagen in de hogere resoluties. Jammer dat de Radeon 64MB met zijn $400 dollar vrij pittig is geprijsd, hopelijk wordt dat snel wat minder...

The ATi Radeon 64MB DDR is a true performer on AMD platforms, though there is still room for improvement. We were happy with the overall performance we got out of the Radeon, and coupled with its impressive feature list and VIVO capabilities this card should be at the top of gamer's wish lists. Who wouldn't want the ability to watch DVD's, do some video editing, and then frag a few fools in Q3A all on the same hardware?

There are still a few driver improvements in the speed area that we would like ATi to make before we can declare the Radeon a "GeForce2 killer". However, with all of the add-on features that ATi has crammed onto this card, along with 64MB of 366MHz DDR memory, anyone looking to upgrade their video cards between now and Christmas will have to give the Radeon a serious looking into. The only thing keeping folks away from the Radeon might be its steep price tag ($400 for the 64MB version and $350 for the 32MB version), but some pricewatch.com searching shows that these prices won't stay that high for long. Already the 64MB version can be had for $370 and the 32MB for $270.

NVIDIA finally has some competition in the high-end video card market with the Radeon - and consumers are ready to reap the benefits.

Samsung, de grootste Rambus producent ter wereld, heeft zichzelf tot doel gesteld om de Rambus kosten binnen een marge van 5% te brengen met de prijs van DDR SDRAM. Samsung liet tevens weten dat zij verwachten dat DDR in 2003 vrijwel de volledige server markt in handen heeft. Rambus zou dan gebruikt worden in 80% van de workstations en 50% van de desktops:

Wie de eerdere artikelen over de achterlopende ontwikkeling van de Itanium heeft gelezen, zal het geen verassing vinden dat Intel vandaag heeft aangekondigd dat de release van de Itanium wederom gedelayed wordt (oorspronkelijk had deze processor in 1997 op de markt moeten komen). Volgens Intel is de huidige Itanium stepping niet voldoende uit ontwikkeld om in massa produktie te gaan. Berichten van Itanium hardware en software developers geven aan dat de snelste testsystemen momenteel op 600MHz draaien, wat nog steeds ver onder de beoogde introductie snelheid van 733MHz is:

Intel said it won't start receiving revenue from the Itanium chip, the company's first 64-bit processor, until the fourth quarter of this year. The company earlier expected revenue to begin in the third quarter.

In addition, the only computers using the chip to ship this year will be "pilot systems," and the general availability will encroach even further on Itanium's successor, code-named McKinley and due to arrive in the second half of 2001.

[...] The revision to the Itanium will take the form of a new "stepping," a modification to the chip design, Kircos said.

The chip currently is in its "b" series of steppings, a source familiar with the chip said. Currently there are about 15,000 Itaniums in 5,000 systems in the hands of software and hardware designers, he said.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een smakelijk lapje tekst weten te schrijven over de GeForce2 MX, nVidia's low budget videokaart. De conclusie is erg positief: veel performance voor weinig geld, en daarnaast ook nog 'tweak friendly' :

Nvidia's GeForce2 MX is a great little card, period. It's not the best performing on the market, but it's price to performance ratio is enough to satisfy most home gamers. At default speeds, it's the speed of a GeForce SDR, and overclocked to the speed of a GeForce DDR, showing the card to be quite a bargain. Considering the prices of a GF2 MX card and a GeForce SDR are about the same price right now ($120 for a 32MB variant), the MX has a load of features that make it more attractive than it's predecessor. Incredibly low amount of heat produced, a 2nd generation T&L engine, ability to handle dual monitors with TwinView, and it's low-form factor all make it an attractive card.

The GeForce2 MX combined with an AMD Duron makes for quite a lethal combination, and we suspect that a lot of gamers on a budget will find the combination very attractive. Considering most Duron chips are retailing for under $150 and GF2 MX cards will retail for around $120, that's a small price to pay for in upwards of 90 FPS in Quake III high quality. Of course, if you're getting a processor in up-wards of 900 MHz+, it's just smarter to go with a GeForce2, since the MX card will be the bottleneck in the system, due to it's 2-pixel pipeline and SDRAM memory.

De specs van dit moederbord zijn vrijwel gelijk aan die van andere dual FC-PGA moederborden met de Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Nu maar hopen dat dit moederbord niet de stabiliteits problemen heeft die het MSI dual FC-PGA bord wel heeft.

Bij Anandtech zijn ze in de weer geweest met een paar Duron's en Thunderbirds om die eens lekker te overclocken met behulp van het verhogen van de multiplier. Dit was erg succesvol, met een paar aanpassingen op het moederbord was het mogelijk om alle Duron's om 900MHz te krijgen en de 1GHz Athlon kon naar 1,1GHz .

Het is je vast niet ontgaan dat ook Tweakers.net bezig is geweest met het overclocken van een Duron. Het lijkt erop dat alle geteste CPU's bij AnandTech in het bezit waren van BP_FID pinnetjes die nog verbonden waren met de die, iets wat bij onze Duron niet het geval was. Dat maakt het overclocken van de CPU's van AnandTech een stuk gemakkelijker, dan zijn voor het veranderen van de multiplier alleen een paar wijzigingen op het moederbord nodig. Als de BP_FID pinnetjes niet meer intern met de CPU verbonden zijn zal er ook op de CPU gesoldeerd moeten worden, en hoe dat in zijn werk gaat kan je gaan lezen in het verslag wat over een niet al te lange tijd op t.net te vinden moet zijn...

We’ve proven that the clock multiplier of the Thunderbird/Duron can still be modified, including on currently shipping CPUs as we went out and got our hands on a few currently available CPUs to make sure.

And we’ve already shown how it can be done on one motherboard in particular, the FIC AZ-11, but there shouldn’t be anything stopping ASUS, ABIT, AOpen, Gigabyte, Microstar or any other company from implementing a similar control on their boards as well without forcing us to modify the boards ourselves.

So is there any potential downfall to our recently discovered methodology? Well, the possibility still remains that AMD could simply disconnect the four BP_FID pins from the die, which we would have guessed would be the case since they are listed as ‘NC’ in the currently available documentation on the Thunderbird/Duron.

For whatever reason, the currently available Thunderbird/Duron CPUs have these BP_FID pins connected to the die, and if AMD really wants to prevent unscrupulous vendors from selling overclocked systems they could very easily make sure that the four BP_FID pins aren’t bonded to the die. Whether or not they will is another question and only time will tell if they will pursue that avenue of multiplier locking.

Volgens dit artikel van EBN Online zal VIA gewoon een DDR chipset releasen voor de Intel Pentium 4 "Willamette" processor. Eerder werd echter gemeld dat Intel geen licenties zou afgeven waardoor er voor de P4 alleen Intel chipsets beschikbaar zouden komen. VIA trekt zich hier niks van aan en wijst op het feit dat ze eerder ook zijn weggekomen toen ze zonder licenties de Apollo Pro 133MHz FSB chipset voor Intel processoren op de markt brachten.

Via Technologies Inc. next year will introduce a double-data-rate (DDR) chipset to support Intel Corp.'s next generation Willamette processor, a Via official told the Platform 2000 conference today in San Jose, Calif.

Eric Chang, director of product marketing, removed all doubt over whether the Taiwan-based independent would develop a DDR chipset for Willamette, which so far uses only the Intel Tehama logic controller supporting Direct Rambus memory. Intel so far has refused to license any other firm to make chipsets for its next-generation bus line architecture, called IA-32 for 32-bit and IA-64 for 64-bit processors.

However, Chang said that, with or without a license, Via was preparing to have its own Willamette chipset. Reminded that Via was brought to court by Intel for unveiling an unlicensed 133-MHz frontside-bus chipset for Intel processors, Chang's response was, "The future has a way of repeating itself."

[...] Chang said the first Via DDR chipsets for current Intel processors will be introduced in September, with volume shipments in the fourth quarter. At about the same time, Via will also debut its DDR chipset for Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Athlon processors, he added.

Ik kreeg net een mailtje van Sander Sassen over zijn Soyo SY-6BA+100 review bij HardwareCentral. De plank is gebaseerd op Intel's vetrouwde BX chipset en heeft dankzij de HighPoint HPT370 controller IDE-RAID ondersteuning aan boord. Verder bleek de SY-6BA+100 geen problemen te ondervinden van hoge bussnelheden zoals 155MHz:

Provided you’re using SDRAM specified to handle 133 MHz and a compatible graphics card the 440BX is more than capable or running at a 133 MHz busspeed. We’ve actually verified the SY-6BA+100’s stability up to its maximum 155 MHz with no problems whatsoever, although you’ll need to carefully select your components in order to be able to run it reliably at those high speeds.

The Quantum’s Fireball Plus LM HDs used in this review are actually Quantum’s 3rd generation 7200 RPM models, and it shows. Performance was top-notch when combined with the SY-6BA+100’ HPT370 RAID controller, both in single disk and RAID 0. Throughout and response was very consistent throughout all of our testing, a good indication that Quantum’s 7200 RPM rotational speed disks with 2 MB buffer come with very stringent cache management, a requirement for consistent and high overall throughput.

Overall the SY-6BA+100 performed admirably and our issues with the evaluation BIOS will undoubtedly be resolved prior to the actual product shipping. The 440BX has been awarded so many kudos that I’ll hold off on the usual bliss and blessings. The SY-6BA+100 is simply the best 440BX motherboard on the market, and a worthy successor to the 6BA+IV, period.

Vanwege Intel's deal met Rambus is het voor de chipgigant niet toegestaan om voor 2003 een eigen DDR chipset te introduceren, zo staat in dit bericht van EBN Online. De komende tijd mogen we dus alleen van VIA, ALi en SiS DDR compatible P3 en Celeron chipsets verwachten. Het is nog onduidelijk of Intel wel voor haar nieuwe server CPU's (Foster en McKinley) een dergelijke chipset mag ontwikkelen; de voorwaarde zou namelijk alleen betrekking hebben op consumenten PC's.

Intel Corp. is essentially barred from introducing its own double data rate (DDR) chip set for microprocessors in personal computers before 2003, under terms of its 1997 licensing agreement with Rambus Inc.

Industry sources said the virtually unknown restriction explains why Intel recently licensed patents for chip set support of DDR memories to Via Technologies Inc., Acer Laboratories Inc, and Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SiS) in Taiwan. The pacts allow these three companies to offer DDR chip sets for Intel's Pentium III and Celeron processors.

An Intel spokesman in Santa Clara denied that the company's DDR chip set deals had any connection with Intel's own Rambus licensing agreement. He agreed, however, that independent chip set suppliers could fill a void for DDR support in PCs with Pentium III and Celeron processors, since Intel has no double data rate products.

[...] Another independent PC logic chip supplier, ServerWorks Inc. of Santa Clara, is also making DDR chip sets for Intel's next generation "Foster" and "McKinley" processors for servers. Intel might be able to market its own DDR chip set for servers under its Rambus agreement, which bars the company from offering double data rate support specifically for personal computers. The issue here is whether servers are considered different from powerful PCs.

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft zijn review klaar van de bekende 3dfx Voodoo5 5500. Net als eerdere tests van deze videokaart kan Koen het ding alleen aanbevelen als je persé high quality FSAA wilt voor al je games:

De conclusie van dit verhaal moet eigenlijk gebaseerd worden op de vraag: “Is FSAA de moeite waard?”. Over de gehele linie is de GeForce 2 namelijk zonder twijfel een veel betere videokaart. Alleen bij FSAA weet de Voodoo5 zich te onderscheiden.

Het grote probleem blijft dat smaken verschillen. Sommige gamers zweren bij FSAA (“eindelijk van die kartel-randjes af!”), sommige verafschuwen het (“het beeld wordt veel te wazig en de performance neemt af!”). Persoonlijk zie ik liever 1024x768 zonder FSAA dan 640x480 met FSAA. Ik geef echter wel toe dat 1024x768 met FSAA er veel mooier uitziet dan 1024x768 zonder FSAA: en de enige kaart die dat goed kan doen is de Voodoo5!

Een moeilijk probleem dus: puur afgaande op beeldkwaliteit heeft 3dfx dus de beste kaarten in handen. Maar de brute performance van nVidia’s GeForce 2 is echter stukken hoger.

Mijn tip: ga eens kijken bij een computerwinkel waar de Voodoo5 gedemonstreerd wordt. Alleen dan kun je zien of je FSAA belangrijk genoeg vindt om voor de Voodoo5 te kiezen. Zo niet, blijft er maar een keuze over: de GeForce 2 is dan absoluut stukken beter, want deze laat de Voodoo5 in alle benchmarks ruim achter zich.
