Microsoft heeft aangekondigd dat het MSN netwerk op dit moment de populairste bestemming is op het internet. MSN had volgens Microsoft in de maand juni wereldwijd 200 miljoen unieke gebruikers. Daarmee wordt Yahoo! - tot voor kort de meeste bezochte site - naar de tweede plaats verwezen. Wanneer alleen rekening wordt gehouden met Amerikaanse bezoekers is MSN derde achter Yahoo! en America Online:

Microsoft says that it had over 200 million individual users of its Internet services around the world in the month of June, compared to 156 million for Yahoo!, which is generally considered the most active Internet site. Responding to criticism that most companies like to use independent third parties to gauge Internet usage, Microsoft says that existing surveys don't cover all of the countries that have Internet access, while its own records are global. Microsoft's once moribund MSN Internet access service is also rebounding, having recently passed the 3 million subscriber mark. Chase says that the MSN Internet access service added over 800,000 new subscribers between April and June.

News.com meldt dat Intel en AMD in de komende dagen hun financiële cijfers voor het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar bekend zullen maken. De verwachting is dat zowel de Intel als AMD een stijgende winst hebben gemaakt. Intel heeft naar verwachting een winst van 36 dollarcent per aandeel gemaakt, dit is een stijging van 39% in vergelijking met het tweede kwartaal van 1999. AMD doet 't ook erg goed en stevend af op een winst van $1,14 per aandeel. Dit is ongeveer vergelijkbaar met het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar, maar deze cijfers zijn nog steeds erg goed omdat de verkoop in het tweede kwartaal normaal gesproken lager is. Het marktaandeel van AMD blijft stijgen in de consumentenmarkt en ook in het server segment worden kleine succesjes geboekt: Cobalt heeft K6-2 RAQ servers aangekondigd:

Intel is expected to report earnings, excluding extraordinary events, of around 36 cents per share split-adjusted for the second quarter, according to a consensus of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial. Zojuist trof ik in de queue het bericht aan dat Libertysurf per 25 juli in Nederland gaat stoppen met haar gratis-internetactiviteiten. Ze verwijzen klanten door naar Zonnet.

Dit lijkt me met de vakantie een nogal onhandig tijdstip: wanneer de klanten vandaag geïnformeerd zouden zijn, hebben nog ze maximaal 3 weken om hun mail op te halen.

Libertysurf stopt per 25 juli de activiteiten als gratis internetprovider in Nederland. De klanten van Libertyurf worden voor het grootste deel overgenomen door Zonnet.

Vanaf 25 juli is het niet meer mogelijk om bij Libertysurf in te bellen of e-mail te ontvangen. Daarna is het nog twee weken mogelijk om de pop3 server te benaderen om de e-mailbox te legen.

Op de site van Libertysurf wordt de 22.000 klanten aangeraden, om zich bij provider Zonnet aan te melden. Daar kunnen de Libertysurf-abonnees direct een nieuw toegangscode krijgen en het net op.

Libertysurf deed in Nederland sinds begin 2000 dienst als internetprovider. De provider is ook actief in Groot-Brittannië, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Zweden en Noorwegen.

Ik kreeg van Jai Ketteridge van Insane Hardware een mailtje dat de Asus CUR-DLS, die begin dit jaar al werd geshowed op de CeBIT, eindelijk op de Asus site is verschenen. Deze dual FC-PGA plank is gebaseerd op de ServerWorks ServerSet III LE chipset en heeft 4 32-bit PCI slots, 2 of 3 64-bit PCI slots, 4 DIMM sockets, onboard ATi Rage XL graphics en onboard Ultra160 SCSI (afhankelijk van het model).

De SuperMicro 370DL3 en 370DLE, twee andere mobo's met de ServerSet III LE chipset, zijn gisteren door SWW Computer en Bolder Hardware in de Tweakers.net Pricewatch geplaatst. De 370DL3 met onboard LAN en Ultra160 SCSI kost FL 1479,- en voor de 370DLE met alleen LAN moet 878 gulden neergelegd worden.

De ServerSet III LE chipset is duidelijk gericht op de server markt en heeft derhalve geen AGP support. Voor workstations heeft ServerWorks de ServerSet III WS chipset met AGP4x support.

Volgens een recente AMD roadmap die The Register onder ogen kreeg, wordt de mobiel AMD Corvette processor voorzien van de stroombesparende PowerNow! II anti-turbo. PowerNow! II kan niet alleen de kloksnelheid verlagen, maar ook pipelines uitzetten in situaties waarbij de volledige processor snelheid niet vereist is:

The second generation of PowerNow, formerly codenamed Gemini, will allow software control of CPU pipelines, with an expected maximum power of less than six watts when the Corvette mobile chips are released.

In battery saver mode, according to the roadmap, we will see a minimum frequency of 300MHz and PowerNow II will also allow maximum battery run time, as well as automatic mode.

First of, the more RAM you have the better, 128MB RAM is ideally the minimum of what anyone running Windows 2000 should have. This OS, much unlike Windows 9x has far better Memory management, one reason for this is because its meant to, Windows 2000 is intended for business/server use, not as a desktop system. Windows 2000 also uses a Paging file, which for all intents & purposes is the exact same as swap file in Windows 9x, just a different name (pagefile.sys) & a few other subtle differences.

If you have below 128MB RAM or less then you really should buy more RAM. This would be of far greater benefit to you than anything else. Much like the Windows 2000 Services guide this one goes into detail regarding settings & such, although if you're like me it's nice to know why & what you are doing. Q6: The Radeon supports DirectX 8. What does this mean to the end user?

Rene: When designing the Radeon, we did not only look at what will be available by the time we launch it, we did of course spent some thought on what will be the next step in graphics. So we already support features that will become available with DirectX 8. So by the time games make use of DirectX 8 features, Radeon users will be able to take advantage of these features. Most games that will be released for this years holiday season however are based on DirectX 7, needless to say that we fully support DirectX 7 as well.

Q7: What you do think about FSAA? Which is more important, TCL or FSAA?

Rene: Both features are designed to improve the picture quality, and they both do their job. I do however believe that TCL adds more realism to a scene than FSAA. If you anti-alias a low-polygon-count object, a ball for example, you will still see that it has a low polygon count. If you take the same object and you increase the polygon count, then the ball will become “rounder”. TCL will become more and more important for future games, about 50% of the major game titles for this years holiday season will support hardware geometry acceleration.

Q11: Keyframe Interpolation is a feature in the Radeon. How does this benefit the end user? Will this result in higher framerates?

Rene: If a game or any other application uses the Radeon hardware for keyframe interpolation, then this will result in higher frame rates, because the calculations can be done in the graphic hardware, not in the system processor. Keyframe interpolation is one of the features that we consider important for future games and 3D applications. We do not only want to match a given feature list, as a big player in the graphics industry we want to drive the market. Making a feature like keyframe interpolation available to the game developers today means that they can play with it, they can try things out, they have a piece of hardware available that allows them to try new stuff. And if the like it, they can use it in their game to make facial movements for example look more realistic.

Q16: Memory bandwidth seems to be the bottleneck especially at high resolutions and colour depth. Will this new architecture do something to alleviate this situation?

Rene: In order to cut down on the memory bandwidth requirements we have designed HyperZ. This feature allows us to determine wether an object or parts of an object will be visible or not before we render it. If it is not visible, we don't render the object and we safe memory bandwidth.

The V7100/T has both composite and S-Video connectors on the back, as well as the 15 pin VGA socket. The dual connectors can't be used at once, but it's a better solution than the non-standard combo-plug that many cards use to cut costs; they come with an adaptor lead without which you can't use composite output. Other cards again have S-Video output only, which is all very well if you've got a funky TV or VCR with Y/C input, but no good for a lot of people.

With both kinds of connector, you can play your games on your big TV (in 800 by 600 or 640 by 480; TVs aren't very sharp screens), or use your DVD-ROM drive equipped computer as a cheap DVD player, and not have to worry about making the awful discovery that Tab A can by no means be plugged into Slot B.

By the time the MX is locally available, plain GeForce boards will probably cost about the same as it.

Wind up the core and RAM speeds, and the MX gives you GeForce DDR performance, for quite a bit less money. It's not far behind even without overclocking. And I doubt the DDR boards will fall in price enough to make them better value.

Where the GeForce DDR and the GeForce2 GTS shine, of course, is in very high resolutions. Even overclocked, the GeForce2 MX's RAM lets it down if you want to go much above 1280 by 960. At 1600 by 1200, a DDR GeForce will show an MX a clean pair of heels, and a GeForce2 GTS will be a dot in the distance.

SysReview maakt ons blij met deze review van de Samsung SD-612, een 12x IDE DVD drive. Het ding bleek geen problemen te hebben met playback en wist zelfs zwaar mishandelde CD's te kunnen draaien:

I inserted Matrix, one of the best movies ever created, into the drive, and the SD-612 fired up the movie in 2-3 seconds with no problem. DVD playback was superb with the Tnt2 ultra, I observed no slowdown whatsoever. Furthermore, unlike my previous Pioneer 10X Slot DVD drive, the Samsung SD-612 was noticeably quieter, especially during load-up times. By no means am I stating that the Samsung unit is silent, but it appears as though the ARS (Acoustic-Noise Reduction System) is effective in lowering the drive’s noise levels. Later, I popped in my Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder into one of the PCI slots and continued to watch some DVDs. Though the image quality was minutely better with hardware decoding, playback performance was still flawless.

After a few hours of movie watching delight, I placed my DVDs aside and began to test data and music CDs. As expected, the drive had no problem reading a variety of CDs including CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and VCDs. To see whether Samsung’s Auto Balancing feature would function, I burned a copy of Quake III, and then I proceeded to damage the CD. For minimal CD damage, I repeatedly scratched the copy of Quake III with my nails. To my surprise, the CD installed properly and ran appropriately. For extreme measures, I took my Swiss army knife and adorned the CD with two lovely indentations. I really didn’t expect this, but the drive read the disc fine. Once I buy a digital camera, I’ll make sure I take a picture of the molested CD and post it on our website. I’m impressed.

Bij GamePC en CDRInfo zijn vandaag reviews geplaatst van de 12 speed IDE fikker van Plextor, die tevens ook met 10x herschrijft en met 32x leest. Verder is deze drive natuurlijk bekend om zijn handige "BURN-Proof" feature waardoor we geen last meer hoeven te hebben van buffer underruns. Plextor managed to surprise us one more time. This time they made a drive that's better equipped than every burner that exists out there currently. The most impressive features are the BURN-Proof and HS RW standards that promise to deliver the best performance someone can get from his drive.

Back to the drive's capabilities the drive performed very good in most of our tests. The drive has good data and DAE reading speeds (improved over previous PX-W124TS model). Writing CD's in 12x and re-writing them at 10x is the best thing you can buy today. The new PX-W1210A can also be used for backing up your data (packet writing) since it's now 2.5x times faster than all other drives that supports the previous 1x-4x RW writing speeds. If you are looking for a new drive don't look anywhere else. At this moment, his is the best solution for your needs.

Storage Review brengt ons een vergelijking tussen de Quantum Atlas 10k II en de Seagate Cheetah 36LP, twee relaxte 10.000rpm SCSI met respectivelijk een seektime van 4.7 en 5.2ms. De Atlas profiteert verder van een 8MB buffer terwijl de Cheetah het 4MB moet doen. In de praktijk is de Atlas dus ietsie sneller alhoewel Storage Review toch voor de Cheetah kiest vanwege het minder zwaar prijskaartje:

Overall, what we've witnessed here are small changes between firmware revisions of two drives that add up when they're compared against each other. Though the Atlas 10k II improves upon its already phenomenal Business Disk WinMark score, its regression in IOMeter combined with the improvements delivered by the Cheetah (not to mention the current price gap… hopefully the Atlas will come down) drive us to give the nod to the 36LP. Seagate's latest would thus garner our Leaderboard spot if it weren't for their own Cheetah X15 drive . All is not over yet, however. Fujitsu's impressively-spec'ed MAJ3182LP waits in the wings. Though we've been disappointed in the past with Fujitsu drives not living up to the performance that specs hint at, we nonetheless have high hopes for the MAJ. Expect a review within a week!

Ace's Hardware kreeg van Asus te horen dat er KT133 moederplanken in de omloop zijn die de geheugenbus op 100MHz forceren, ook wanneer het bord is geconfigureerd voor een 133MHz DRAM clock. Verder zijn er volgens Asus mobo's die wel op 133MHz draaien, maar dan instabiel functioneren. De Asus A7V zou dit probleem (uiteraard) niet hebben:

Thanks to Steve at ASUS for sending word our way that a number of KT133-based Socket-A motherboards force 100 MHz (PC100) memory operation regardless of whether or not they are configured to run at 133 MHz (PC133). He also claims that there are a couple of motherboards which will run at a genuine 133 MHz memory frequency, but are often unstable. The ASUS A7V (Socket-A KT133) motherboard apparently doesn't have this problem, however. This could make it one of the top choices for anyone demanding 133 MHz operation.

The Register meldt dat zij van bronnen bij Tech Data, een grote Amerikaanse distributeur, hebben begrepen dat de leveringsproblemen van Pentium III processors bijna voorbij zijn. Alle processors onder 866MHz zijn in voldoende hoeveelheden leverbaar. Een apart geval blijft de 1GHz PIII, die nog steeds uitsluitend aan het kameradenclubje van Intel (Dell & co) wordt geleverd:

Large quantities are available for most of the price ratings of the Pentium III apart from the 1GHz microprocessor, which, as we have previously reported, is a special case.

However, although there now appears to be good supply on Intel's mid-range CuMines -- that is the 700MHz to the 850MHz, the situation is less rosy for the Pentium III/866MHz and the Pentium III/933MHz parts, with only limited quantities expected in the next week or two.

Stormzoeker schrijft: "Na vrijages en toenaderingen met verschillende partijen in de breedband markt lijken Excite@Home en Chello zich nu gevonden te hebben. Vandaag zal waarschijnlijk bekend gemaakt worden dat de twee providers gaan fuseren. De Financial Times schat de waarde van de nieuwe combinatie op zo'n 5,5 miljard euro. Excite@Home en Chello-moeder UPC worden de grootaandeelhouders met ieder een belang van 50 procent. Chello-baas Roger Lynch zal de leiding krijgen van de kabelgigant.

Interessant hierbij is dat het zeer waarschijnlijk lijkt dat de beursgang van Chello hiermee niet door zal gaan.

In Nederland is @Home met haar kabeldiensten via het netwerk van Essent vooral actief in het oosten en het zuiden van het land, Chello via het UPC-netwerk in de Randstad, Brabant en het noorden. Samen bereiken ze dus ongeveer heel Nederland. Bovendien zijn beide concerns bezig met de introductie van ADSL.

De vraag is of hiermee een alliantie gevormd is die zich bewapent voelt om de komende uitputtingsstrijd in kabel/ASDL land goed door te komen.":

Een sleutelrol in dit alles speelt AT&T. Het Amerikaanse bedrijf heeft namelijk al een belang in Excite@Home en via haar dochter sinds kort ook in UPC en dus ook Chello.

Internationale partners van Excite@Home kunnen nog wel roet in het eten gooien, schrijft de Britse zakenkrant. In Engeland heeft Excite@Home bijvoorbeeld een joint venture met British Telecom, in Nederland met Essent.

AMD Zone heeft van Asus een reactie ontvangen over het wel of niet aanwezig zijn van de multiplier dipswitch op de A7V. De eerste batch van deze borden is niet voorzien van een multiplier dipswitch, maar toekomstige A7V's krijgen 'm wel:

Manuals are also in process of being updated to also provide information on the CPU multiplier dip switch feature. Niels Tijssen schrijft: "Tom heeft de ATi Radeon kaart op de snijtafel gelegd, en hem eens grondig ontleed. Zijn sectierapport is op zijn site te bekijken, en het is _erg_ uitgebreid."

Ome Tom is erg te spreken over de kaart: de 16-bit performance ziet hij niet als een probleem, de HyperZ feature om het bandbreedte probleem slim aan te pakken vindt hij ook leuk, de DVD en HDTV mogelijkheden zijn ook een positief punt en het heeft de beoordeling zeker geen pijn gedaan dat de kaart in 32-bit in resoluties boven de 1024x786 de GeForce2 verslaat :

First of all I'd like to note that Radeon's benchmark results at 16-bit color look worse than they are, simply because numbers can't give you a feel for game play. I understand if some of you might complain about Radeon's 16-bit performance, but the 16-bit scores of Radeon are only an issue if you happen to play at 1280x1024x16 or 1600x1200x16, because Radeon's scores are definitely good enough in all the lower 16-bit color resolutions. In those two resolutions GeForce 2 GTS is clearly and utterly beating the Radeon. This doesn't come as a surprise, because the NVIDIA chip does not suffer from memory bandwidth limitation as much in 16-bit color as it suffers in 32-bit color, making it able to reach at least 70% of its claimed fill rate. Radeon's HyperZ is also not too effective in 16-bit color, which is why Radeon's scores are almost identical in 16-bit color as in 32-bit color.

[...] I personally like the Radeon, which is mainly due to the elegant 'HyperZ'-feature with the stupid name. ATi has shown that the memory bandwidth issue can be tackled in a different way than with pure brute force. It's like a light and fast sports car with a much better fuel consumption thanks to smart technology.

[...] I am pretty sure that Radeon's performance will further improve once the drivers have matured a bit. I certainly look forward to the luxurious 'All-In-One' Radeon that's supposed to be released in early fall of this year. The SDR Radeon might mix up NVIDIA's GeForce 2 MX sales as well, because it is meant to offer performance that's close to DDR Radeon for a rather low price.

Het lijkt erop dat de Gainward GeForce2 kaart niet uitgerust gaat worden met 5ns DDR, iets wat in Tom's review de performance van deze GeForce2 op ongekende hoogtes bracht. In Taiwan is deze kaart al op de markt verschenen, en wat er op zit is Hyundai geheugen wat op 166MHz draait. Op zich is dit niet zo'n verassing, 5ns DDR Ram is nog te zeldzaam en duur voor videokaarten, maar de marketing guys van Gainward hebben er wel een mooi slaatje uit weten te slaan: op de doos staat een quote van Tom's Hardware waarin melding wordt gemaakt van 5ns Ram :

As you may be well aware, Tom's review showed how the Gainward board virtually blew away all other competing brands, via its astounding overclocking prowess - purportedly reaching 472MHz. Yet the retail boxed version I witnessed was equipped with Hyundai HY5DV651622 TC-G6 DDR memory instead. This is rated at 166MHz x 2 - the same rating, as the Infineon DDR type typically found on other GTS2 board makes.

Having said that, a quick flip through the board's manual didn't mention anything about having 5ns memory. Yet, what was most misleading, is that there was a labeled sticker pasted on the box cover (quoting Tom's Hardware review) stating the 5ns + 472MHz attainability? Hmmm...I guess it would be interesting to see if the 6ns DDR can indeed reach at least 450MHz clock speed as promised by Gainward (in Tom's review):

Gateway heeft de levering van 1GHz Thunderbird systemen hervat, meldt Techweb. Vorige maand werden stabiliteitsproblemen ondekt, die zoals nu blijkt werden veroorzaakt door een brakke moederplank. Om het probleem te ondervangen werden de 1GHz systemen tijdelijk geleverd met 1GHz Athlon Classic CPU's:

Gateway has isolated and solved the problem associated with its 1-GHz "Select" PCs, the company said Monday.

[...] Earlier this month, Gateway replaced the Thunderbird processors, which contain on-chip cache memory, with so-called "classic" Athlons that lack the integrated cache. The company said it had discovered errors with Thunderbird systems, including the possibility of system lockups, and had confined the problem to either the motherboard or power supply.

Gateway said Monday that the problem was the result of a faulty motherboard, which had apparently either been redesigned or replaced. The spokeswoman said she had no other details.

De beweringen van Client Server News dat de release van de Itanium wordt uitgesteld naar het vierde kwartaal, worden door Intel tegengesproken.Intel liet tegenover The Register weten dat de introductie nog steeds gepland staat voor dit kwartaal. Intel organiseert in augustus weer een Development Forum en dan krijgen we ongetwijfeld meer te horen over de Itanium:

According to a report which you can find here, Intel's production of the Itanium has slipped from Q3 to Q4 this year.

But that claim was denied by an Intel representative, who said: "There are 5,000 development systems out in the field, and the recent Microsoft-Intel announcement [about Win64] lends further weight to OS support and progress.

"We expect production processor silicon in Q3'00, with system availability beginning in the second half of 2000."
