Op de Perl Conference 4.0 is het heugelijke nieuws bekend geworden: Perl 6 komt eraan. Deze versie moet een volledige herschrijving worden van het huidige Perl 5. Daarnaast moet de core beter en sneller worden, en moet het uitbreiden van Perl met behulp van modules simpeler en netter gaan worden. Ook gaan misschien oude functies die niet meer nuttig zijn verwijderd worden (bijv. typeglobs, daarvoor kunnen references gebruikt worden).

Larry Wall and other active Perl porters and Perl helpers met on Tuesday afternoon at Perl Conference 4.0 and mapped out a what is planned to become a complete rewrite of Perl that will become Perl 6 in 18 to 24 months, with a prerelease targeted for next year's conference.

Perl 5 will not be abandoned, but will primarily be concerned with bugfixes both major and minor.

Much of the focus on the problems with Perl centered around how increasingly difficult it was to improve, extend, and embed Perl. A rewrite and redesign are needed, he said, and maybe it is time for a hard change. So while the focus of the effort seems to be on improving the Perl guts and API, the project will also be used as an opportunity to clean out some of the cruft, including bad and seldom-used features.

Some of the primary (and still vague) goals of the effort will be to reimplement the core so it is better, stronger, and faster; improve syntax; add new features where appropriate; have better version and installation management for perl and its modules; and have a clear and automated migration path, which may include a backward compatibility mode. Door een gat in Outlook (Express) kan er in het datumveld van de header van een mailtje, wat niet goed wordt gecontroleerd, een systeemopdracht meegezonden worden, wat vast weer allerlei verschrikkelijke dingen met je systeem kan doen.

Ook de Telegraaf berichtte hierover. Je moet op hun site dan wel nog van de pagina achter de link doorklikken naar "PC-Virus in aantocht".

Als je IE 5.01 SP1 of IE 5.5 hebt kan je weinig gebeuren, tenzij je met IE 5.5 in combinatie met Windows 2000 werkt. Zie ook dit artikel op de Technet site van Microsoft. Ook belangrijk is dat bedrijfssystemen grotendeels ontlopen aan het gevaar. Volgens Microsoft treft het gat alleen systemen die werken met POP3 en IMAP4 als mailprotocol. Het door Microsoft Exchange gebruikte MAPI-protocol zou niet kwetsbaar zijn.

Het lek ontstaat doordat het mailprogramma de 'headers' die met een e-mailbericht meegezonden worden niet goed controleert. In het datumveld van het bericht kunnen kwaadwillenden extra informatie plaatsen, waaronder opdrachten die het systeem moet uitvoeren. Die opdrachten worden uitgevoerd zodra het mailtje wordt binnengehaald. Het bericht hoeft dus niet eerst geopend te worden voor er schade wordt aangericht.

Volgens Van Berkum gaat het om een zeer groot veiligheidslek. "De hacker kan alle commando's uitvoeren op de computer. Het is een koud kunstje om wachtwoordbestanden te mailen of de harde schijf te formatteren." Uiteraard kan dat alles ook pas gebeuren nadat het virus zichzelf heeft doorgestuurd naar alle e-mailadressen in het adresboek van Outlook.

Electric Tech schrijft dat Adaptec een kleine hoeveelheid RAID controllers terug heeft geroepen nadat er problemen waren geconstateerd met de SCSI chips van QLogic. De betreffende SCSI chips konden foute informatie zenden naar de RAID chip, die op zijn beurt partitie errors en syteem crashes konden veroorzaken:

Defective SCSI chips from QLogic Corp. have resulted in a limited recall of Adaptec Inc. controllers for redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID) storage. Adaptec today announced the recall, saying that errors were discovered in QLogic's 12160A SCSI devices, which were used in DPT SmartRAID Decade VI Ultra160 SCSI controller shipped prior to May.

The recall affects up to 2,500 RAID controllers, according to Adaptec, which acquired the DPT product line late last year when it bought privately-held Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) in Maitland, Fla.

The flawed SCSI chips could send incorrect information to the RAID system controller, which then can hang up the bus or cause parity errors, according to Bob Schultz, chief operating officer at Adaptec in Milpitas.

Ace's Hardware kreeg gisteren de mogelijkheid om wat te babbelen met een woordvoerder van Micron. Uit het gesprek werd onder meer duidelijk dat Micron bij hun DDR SDRAM produktie momenteel erg goede yields haalt. Vrijwel alle chips werken stabiel op 100MHz (PC1600 DDR). Verder zal Micron binnenkort de PC2600 specificatie aan de JEDEC voorleggen. Eerder werd al bekend dat de AMD 760MP en VIA Apollo Pro 2001 chipsets overweg kunnen met 166MHz PC2600 DIMMen. Beide chipsets worden ergens eind dit jaar geïntroduceerd:

While Micron did not confirm this litterally, it became clear that DDR SDRAM is yielding very well. Almost 100% of the DDR SDRAM chips are capable of working totally reliable at 100 MHZ DDR (1.6 GB/s peak bandwidth).

Micron is also working on the next generation of DDR SDRAMs. PC2600 (2.6 GB/s) DDR SDRAM were designed and will be submitted to the JEDEC standarisation organisation.

DDR II will be the next generation of DDR SDRAMs. This means that multiple Rambus channels are not the only way to achieve very high bandwidth.

Gamecenter heeft een review gepubliceerd over de nieuwste Ati Videokaart: de Radeon. Deze kaart kan de concurrentie met de GF2 en de VooDoo5 kaarten prima aan. Het geteste exemplaar is een 64MB DDR versie welke ook voorzien is van de nodige TV in en uitgangen. Ook Gamecenter concludeert dat de beeldkwaliteit mooier is op hoge detail niveaus dan de beeldkwaliteit van de GF2. Wat vinden zij de nadelen van deze kaart:

ZDNet heeft een artikeltje gepost over de processor roadmap van Intel en AMD. Eerder werd al bekend dat op de 31ste van deze maand de 1,133MHz Pentium III wordt aangekondigd. Het zal naar verwachting nog enkele weken duren voordat deze 'limited edition' in beperkte hoeveelheden beschikbaar komt voor de grote OEMs. De leverbaarheid van de 1GHz PIII zal gedurende dit kwartaal verbeteren. Halverwege dit kwartaal komt de GigaPIII in volumes beschikbaar.

AMD volgt waarschijnlijk midden augustus met de release van de 1,1GHz Athlon. In tegenstelling tot de 1,13GHz PIII zal de 1,1GHz Athlon meteen vanaf de release date verkrijgbaar zijn. Rond dezelfde tijd wordt tevens een 750MHz Duron verwacht. Wat verder weg is de introductie van de Mustang, die eind dit jaar op een kloksnelheid van waarschijnlijk 1,3GHz zijn debuut zal maken. Mephisto_ wees ons op een bericht bij Nu.nl over de nieuwe Fuji FinePix 40i digitale camera. Naast goede specs van onder andere 2.47 megapixels, wat een enhanched fotoresolutie van 2400x1800 kan opleveren, is het vooral een leuke camera omdat ze er ook een mogelijkheid hebben ingebouwd om MP3's te kunnen afspelen. Een ander nice feature is de mogelijkheid om korte AVI filmpjes op te nemen. Afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid geheugen kan je tot 80 seconden film met of net iets meer dan 6 minuten zonder geluid opnemen. Dit is dus wat meer dan de 15 seconden die de Sony Cybershot en Mavica camera's maximaal kunnen.

Door de hoge resolutie kan het apparaat foto's maken met een maximum resolutie van 2.400 x 1.800. Als opslagmedium gebruikt het toestel SmartMedia-kaarten, zowel voor foto's als voor muziekbestanden.

Met een kaart van 16 MB betekent dat een capaciteit van negen beelden aan de hoogste resolutie en kwaliteit. Door te kiezen voor JPEG-kwaliteit, kan het aantal foto's opgevoerd worden tot 47 bij 2.400 x 1.800.

Een USB-aansluiting laat je toe om JPEG's over te zetten naar de pc of MP3's naar de camera. Muziek valt te beluisteren via een hoofdtelefoon, uitgerust met een afstandsbediening die meteen ook gebruikt kan worden om de camerafuncties te bedienen. Achteraan is de FinePix 40i uitgerust met een 1,8-inch LCD-schermpje om foto's vooraf te bekijken

Begin september zou deze camera in de handel te vinden moeten zijn. Hoeveel het apparaatje hier in Nederland moet gaan kosten is nog niet bekend maar in Amerika moet hij 699 dollar opbrengen.

Vanaf 1 augustus start QuickOnline "Flatstream": onbeperkt internetten tegen een vast bedrag via ISDN of je modem zónder urenbeperking. Het pakket geeft je verder 5 e-mail adressen en een subdomein voor je homepage. De kosten van deze dienst worden helaas pas aanstaande maandag bekend gemaakt. Flatstream wordt in drie abonnementsvormen aangeboden. De pakketten verschillen niet van inhoud, wel van prijs en contractsduur. Wie zich bindt voor een jaar is het goedkoopst uit, een halfjaar abonnement is wat duurder en verlengen per kwartaal is het duurst. "De prijzen zullen concurreren met die van kabelinternet", aldus marketing manager Sander Demarteau van QuickOnline. Daarmee komt de prijs waarschijnlijk rond de 70 gulden per maand te liggen.

Demarteau wil niet zeggen welke capaciteit het inbelnetwerk van Flatstream heeft. "We zullen goede bereikbaarheid bieden dankzij een strak management van het aantal gebruikers en het aantal poorten. Pat Kennedy van SysOpt heeft een review van de DFI CA64-SC geschreven. Dit is een moederbord gebaseerd op de Via Apollo Pro133A. Het moederbord heeft verder een standaard uitrusting van 1x AGP, 4x PCI, 1x PCI/ISA gedeeld en 1 AMR slot. Ook zit er geen voltage tweaking en zijn de instel mogelijkheden van de FSB beperkt. Al met al voor tweakers dus niet echt interressant. Hier volgt hun conclusie:

The decision of whether the CA64-SC is a good board for an application comes down to a simple principal. Will overclocking be involved? If overclocking is involved then the SC64-SC is not an ideal solution. For the vast majority of non-overclocking solutions, its hassle free installation, full expansion capabilities, onboard sound, and low price make a compelling case to seriously consider the CA64-SC. At $99 dollars it is a solid choice for building not just personal systems but also those for friends and family. It is especially good for those applications because of its easy installation and integrated sound. It may even find a niche in enthusiasts' extra PCs where the main applications don't call for top notch sound.

Ortep schrijft dat er bij WinInformant wat info te vinden is over het nieuwe Start Menu dat Microsoft zal implementeren in Windows Whistler. Het bekende menuutje zal namelijk worden vervangen door een "Start Panel" en een "Start Page" waarvan je hieronder een pic kan zien:

In the Whistler Preview, the hidden Start Panel is approximately twice as wide as the Start menu and features two columns of options with "Log Off" and "Turn off computer" choices at the top. The first column features large icons for Internet Explorer and the configured email application, followed by a list of the most recently accessed applications. A "More Programs" option opens a standard Start menu. In the second column, called "My Places," Microsoft has created links for common system locations and utilities. First, lets come right and say that the image quality on the Radeon cards in Q3:A is better than the GeForce2's. This is of course a subjective conclusion, though we'll state our reasoning in full.

First, take a look at the first set of shots on Q3DM13. Now look at the difference in how the sky looks between the two shots - and notice how much better the Radeon's image is than the GeForce2's. The GeForce2's image looks like its got some serious artifacting on the sky texture, while the Radeon's looks smoother.

Next up, take a gander at some this set of shots from NVIDIA's NV15 Bunker level. Look at the left and right walls, going from the bottom of the image to the top. There are more artifacts in the GeForce2's image than the Radeon's - which are noticable because the wall should be off a 'greyish' gradient. The GeForce2 shot has noticeable 'greenish' splotches at points up the wall, while the Radeon's image does not.

Now, take a look at this set of shots from LUN3DM2. Take a look at the hallway behind the rocket launcher, specifically in the ceiling area. Again, the GeForce2's image displays some 'greenish' splotches, while the Radeon has a smooth grey color.

Planet Hardware heeft eens gekeken hoe een overgeklokte ATi Radeon presteerde tegen een GeForce2 draaiend op 225/420MHz. De Radeon werd stabiel op 207/420MHz geklokt. De 16-bit performance van de overgeklokte Radeon was helaas nog steeds niet hoog genoeg om die van een standaard GeForce2 te evenaren. At the same clock speeds, the Radeon loses some of the advantage that it enjoys when its left in its default state where it bullies the GeForce2 GTS with a 33MHz faster memory rating. At 1600x1200x32bpp we can see the overclocked GeForce2 GTS closing the gap with the overclocked Radeon, which isn't the case when they're both running the MHz levels that they come set to out of the box.

It's interesting to note that even the default GeForce2 GTS blows away the highly overclocked Radeon in the low resolution 16-bit benchmark, this is proof that ATi has some driver optimization left to do for the lower graphics settings.

The Register heeft een artikel over de 1GHz Cyrix met de Samuel 2 core die VIA in de planning heeft staan voor begin volgend jaar. Eind 2000 komen eerst de .15micron 733MHz en 800MHz versies met 128K L1 en 64K (of meer) L2 cache. VIA hoopt hiermee wederom een goede Celeron-killer neer te planten, iets wat met de Cyrix III totaal fout ging.

VIA Cyrix, long derided by Intel as a mere imitator, plans to hit 1GHz with its Samuel 2 Celeron rival. Having dumped its plainly daft PR ratings (Certain Intel insiders really got hot under the collar over that one), it now plans to go head to head with Celery on performance.

VIA's director of marketing, Dean Hays, told The Reg that the Socket 370 Samuel 2 - already sampling - would launch at between 733 and 800MHz in Q4, with a 1GHz part to follow. The current Cyrix roadmap shows an 800MHz Samuel 2 due in Q2 2002, but Hays intimated that that plan was almost certain to change.

The first Samuel 2s will be made using a 0.15 micron process and feature 128K L1 cache and 64K L2, but Hays said the latter figure would definitely increase in the not too distant future.

Samuel 2 is pin compatible with Celeron but will run at 133, 100 and 66MHz FSB, unlike the 66MHz Intel parts. The Cyrix part is designed to be more thermally efficient than Celeron, and the company expects them to find a home in notebooks as well as value segment desktops. A PowerNow/Speedstep equivalent, Dynamic Power Switch, is also featured.

Afgelopen zondag werd bekend dat de ALi DDR Athlon chipset aankondinging vertraagd zou zijn naar begin augustus omdat er nog geen werkend silicon beschikbaar was. Dit probleem is inmiddels gefixt waardoor de chipset toch wel volgende week kan worden geshowed:

The on-again/off-again double-data-rate (DDR) chipset from Acer Laboratoies Inc. to support the Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Athlon processor is back on schedule and will be introduced next week.

Taiwan-based ALI canceled a planned launch this week at the Platform 2000 Conference in San Jose, Calif., because final silicon hadn't finished all testing. That has now been accomplished and ALI plans on July 26 to unveil the Athlon DDR chipset, which it claims is the first such chipset for notebook computers.

A bevy of chipset makers have announced desktop Athlon DDR chipsets, including AMD itself, Via Technologies, Silicon Integrated Systems, and Micron Technology.

C|Net Investor meldt dat AMD over het tweede kwartaal van 2000 een recordwinst van $207 miljoen heeft behaald. Dit komt neer op $1,21 per aandeel, boven de verwachting van analisten. AMD heeft bekend gemaakt dat er binnenkort een aandelen split volgt:

Surging on sales of its Athlon microprocessor and flash memory, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD reported record net earnings of $207 million, or $1.21 per share, for the second quarter. Analysts expected earnings per share to come in at $1.14.

Last year, AMD lost $113.4 million, or 81 cents a share, in the second quarter, excluding extraordinary events. The company reported losses again in the third quarter. The current results mark the third consecutive profitable quarter for AMD and further underscore the reversal of fortune the company has experienced since last year.

Revenue for this year's second quarter came to $1.2 billion, close to double revenue of $631.6 million in the second quarter last year.

The future looks strong as well. The company has already sold out of flash memory and some classes of microprocessors, said executives at the company. The average selling price of AMD microprocessors rose to the low $90s and will possibly hit the company's goal of $100 by the fourth quarter.

Target PC en Guru 3D hebben allebei een review online gekwakt van de Outrageous GeForce2 GTS. Deze kaart ziet eruit als de gemiddelde GeForce2 kaart, ware het niet dat er op alle Ram chippies heatsinkjes te vinden zijn.
