Vandaag worden we door Akiba's PC Watch getrakteerd op een paar nudies van de SiS 730S chipset, de Abit KT7 en de Iwill KA266-R. De shots werden genomen op de AkibaX 2000 beurs.

SiS 730S Athlon chipset

De SiS 730S is een super geïntegreerde Athlon chipset met ingebakken 3D graphics, 100Mbit LAN, modem en ATA100 controller:

De KT7 is Abit's eerste plankje met de VIA KT133 chipset. Het bord heeft 6 PCI slots, 1 ISA slot, 3 DIMM sockets en blijkbaar ook een extra ATA100 controller. In de press release werd hier niets over gezegd en ook op deze foto zijn de 2 extra connectors en de HighPoint controller niet zichtbaar. Volgens HardOCP komt er in september een versie van met ATA100 RAID, wat de aanwezigheid van de extra IDE spullen op onderstaande plank verklaart:

Iwill KA266-R Socket A mobo

De Iwill KA266-R is het eerste en voorlopig ook enige bord met de M1647 chipset van ALi. De M1647 de eerste chipset met DDR support en wordt waarschijnlijk op 26 juli aangekondigd:

AMD Duron sandalen

En nu de klapper van deze maand: AMD heeft de Duron Sandalen met Performance-Enhancing On-Schoen Rubberzolen gereleased. Tweakers.net heeft inmiddels een elite team geformeerd dat de tweakbaarheid van deze sandalen gaat onderzoeken:

Ace's Hardware kreeg in een gesprek met Intel's Europese Technical Programs manager te horen dat de Pentium 4 - in tegenstelling tot eerdere berichten - niet de laatste 32-bit x86 processor van Intel zal worden. De reden hiervoor is dat 64-bit IA-64 processors de komende jaren voorbehouden blijven voor het high-end server segment. Deerfield stond oorspronkelijk gepland om in 2002 als eerste IA-64 processor het desktop segment te betreden, maar wordt nu gericht op de mid-end server markt:

The Deerfield will not be targeted at the desktopmarket but at the middle tier servers.

The Pentium IV is NOT intel's last 32 bit x86 CPU!. Intel feels that 32-bit x86 will continue to dominate the desktop market for several years. Contrary to what Intel reported a few years ago, IA-64 CPU's will not enter the desktop market in the next years. So don't count the Pentium V out yet...

Bij The Register hebben ze een roadmap neergezet van de processors van Intel die tussen nu en begin volgend jaar geïntroduceerd en/of geleverd gaan worden. VR-Zone heeft het in een overzichtelijk tabelletje gezet, wat onderaan deze post te lezen is.

De boxed versies van de PIII-933MHz en 1GHz moeten dit kwartaal nog op de markt komen, gevolgd door de introductie in het laatste kwartaal van de Pentium 4 1.3GHz en 1.4GHz modellen.

De snellere versies van de Pentium 4 staan gepland voor het eerste kwartaal van volgend jaar wanneer processoren sneller dan 1.4GHz in volumes leverbaar zullen zijn. Verder valt het verloop van de Celeron en de Timna (een nóg meer budget-gerichte versie dan de Celeron) hieronder te lezen:

On the Celeron desktop front, Intel is positioning the 700MHz part as the top end "Value" processor (systems without monitors costing between $850 and $999). In Q4, that slot will be occupied by the 766MHz and 733MHz Celerons, while in Q1 next year, the 800MHz and 766MHz will be the top Celeron dogs.

The Timna processor and the Cu128K Celeron will occupy the so-called "Value 2" ($700-850), slot in Q1 next year, while these channel roadmaps for boxed parts still indicate that the "Value 1" position will be held by 666MHz Timna and the 700MHz Timna.

VR Zone meldt dat AMD op de Platform 2000 conferentie de 'Corona' reference plank met de nieuwe AMD 760 chipset heeft gedemonstreerd. De 760 chipset bestaat uit de AMD-766 southbridge en de AMD-761 northbridge met support voor 266MHz FSB en DDR SDRAM:

AMD at Platform Conference demonstrated a Thunderbird processor with AMD-760 motherboard codenamed CORONA-EVT3 featuring support for high performance DDR memory as well as offering an increase in the FSB to 133MHz DDR (266MHz). The AMD-760 chipset comprise of the AMD-761 NorthBridge as well as the AMD-766 SouthBirdge. Both the AMD-760(tm) chipset and DDR memory modules are planned to be available in the second half of 2000.

The Register meldt dat Quantum grote problemen heeft bij de levering van Atlas 10K II SCSI harde schijven. De 10K II werd oorspronkelijk al in december vorig jaar aangekondigd, maar is pas sinds enkele weken mondjesmaat verkrijgbaar. Quantum heeft inmiddels besloten om een extra produktielijn in gebruik te nemen, maar omdat Texas Instruments niet in staat is om voldoende pre-amplifier chips te leveren, kan het nog tot eind september duren voordat de drives goed leverbaar zijn. Quantum raadt haar klanten nu aan om 7200rpm Atlas V drives te gebruiken, waardoor ook voor deze schijven tekorten ontstaan:

"Unfortunately for today's deliveries one of our providers (Texas Instrument for the pre-amplifier chip) has informed us they will not be able to fulfill the expected volume.

"This means we will not be able to provide enough drives before TI increases chip availability or we qualify another provider. Atlas 10KII will not be available till end of September. On the other hand, Atlas 10K is End-Of-Life

"Hopefully availability of Atlas V is good enough to answer to the market needs. The level of performance of Atlas V is very similar to the Atlas 10K in many configurations (measured with Winbench 99). For all customers satisfied with Atlas 10K performances, they will be satisfied by Atlas V too."

But supplies of Atlas Vs too are beginning to experience shortages too, according to distributors close to drive manufacturers' plans. Demand for SCSI 7200 is no migrating to Big Blue drives, and existing stocks will not be able to meet what is described as a "massive hunger" for the parts. That means IBM will shortly begin to suffer too.

Volgens ZDNet gaat Palm deze zomer de VII verversen en komt er een goedkoop instapmodel van $149, de M100 genaamd. Hieronder wat info over dit nieuwe model:

The M100 will represent a drastic design overhaul for Palm, featuring a curvy case and five removable front plates colored silver, gold, black, royal and light blue.

The model will also come with a flip cover with a small window that displays the date and time, as well as reminder notices.

The case will have a thicker plastic than previous models had, and it will have dimensions similar to the Palm V, sources said.

Dit is besloten nadat op het web een stormvloed van reacties los kwam, waarvan duidelijk de meerderheid negatief was. Nu komt voorlopig alleen de Extra Light feature in de drivers:

Microsoft heeft een patch klaarliggen die de gevaarlijke bug in Outlook (Express) verhelpt. Helaas is de fix alleen geschikt voor Internet Explorer versie 5.01 of 4.01 Service Pack 2. Gebruik je een andere versie dan is de lek alleen dichten door up-te-graden naar Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1 of IE versie 5.5. Hieronder wat info van WebWereld:

Volgens Microsoft moet Internet Explorer worden bijgewerkt om het gat in mailprogramma Outlook te dichten.

Microsoft maakt geen updates voor alle versies van haar browser. Alleen voor Internet Explorer versies 5.01 en 4.01 Service Pack 2. Wie een andere versie gebruikt dient de browser op te waarderen.

Het versienummer van de browser is te achterhalen door te klikken op 'Info' in het menu 'Help' van Explorer. Bij IE 4.01 Service Pack 2 is het versienummer 4.72.3612.1713. Is IE 5.01 geïnstalleerd dan is het versienummer 5.0.2919.6307.

[...] Het bewuste lek ontstaat doordat het mailprogramma de 'headers' die met een e-mailbericht meegezonden worden niet goed controleert. In het datumveld van het bericht kunnen kwaadwillenden extra informatie plaatsen, waaronder opdrachten die het systeem moet uitvoeren. Die opdrachten worden uitgevoerd zodra het mailtje wordt binnengehaald.

Vele versies van Outlook zijn kwetsbaar. Microsoft noemt in een 'Security Bulletin' Outlook Express 4.0, 4.01, 5.0 en 5.01 en Outlook versies 97, 98 en 2000.

Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een Intel Celeron Performance Guide online gekegeld waarin hij kijkt of de Celeron nog een beetje vooruit wil dezer dagen t.o.v. zijn grote broer de Pentium III. De conclusie luidt (niet geheel onverwacht) dat de processor nog steeds interessant is voor mensen die bv een goedkope upgrade willen plegen of gewoon weinig poen (er voor over) hebben:

I think most of you have already read Tom's review of the new AMD Duron processor, which is meant to be Celeron's competitor. As you can see in the Duron benchmarks, this new AMD processor beats the Celeron in every benchmark and positions itself just below the Pentium III. However, we are not comparing the Celeron to the Duron, but merely the low-cost solution Celeron to the official high-end chip Pentium III. Although Duron seems to be preferable low-cost solution today, Celeron could be interesting in the following cases:

• for people who want to upgrade from a Pentium II (233-333 MHz) without exchanging motherboard and RAM as well.
• for people who have large amounts of PC66 SDRAM memory
• for people who cannot afford expensive components
• for people who want to get a cheap CPU now and upgrade to a fast Pentium III later

Even though the Duron provides superior performance to the Celeron for the same price, the AMD processor requires a new KT133 motherboard and at least PC100 memory. At this point, most KT133 motherboards cost more than platforms for Celeron or Pentium III processors based on VIA's Apollo Pro 133A chipset. That's why many people might prefer to upgrade their Pentium II or old Celeron system with a new Celeron processor.

One very interesting issue regarding the Celeron is its overclocking capability, which was left out of this article intentionally. We are already dealing with part two of this article, which will focus on this issue exclusively.

Kyle van HardOCP heeft eens zijn hart gelucht over de nVidia - Riva3D zaak en een flinke pagina volgeschreven over wat er allemaal fout is aan nVidia. Kyle gaat tot het extreme, en roept om het aftreden van Derek Perez and Diane Vanasse (de PR people van nVidia):

In my opinion, nVidia needs to reevaluate their wants and their needs and concentrate on building great Vid Cards, which they have done a great job of. But building great cards does not give you the right to try and censor online media. I think nVidia would make a great step in rebuilding relations with the Hardware Community by calling for the resignations of both Derek Perez and Diane Vanasse. There is NO ROOM for strong-arm tactics or manipulation in their job descriptions.

Some of you might think this is a bit harsh, but I think this is a very serious situation and an indictment of nVidia's character. nVidia has a chance to really shine here and show us what their company ethics are comprised of. Lying and manipulation are surely not on their mission statement. I simply feel as though nVidia's Public Relations employees should have a bit more pride in their products and not worry about stifling the "little guy's" opinion and if they can't do that, then they need to be removed from the PR positions. If they are allowed to carry on in this manner isn't it simply opening the door for other companies and PR departments to act in the same manner? We, the Hardware Community, which includes the sites, and most of all the readers, need to have this situation nipped in the bud. WE need to take responsibility for letting this happen and fix it now. You can write nVidia HERE if you would like to share your thoughts on this with them.

Lastly, if you feel as though we are simply posting this because we have an axe to grind, you are incorrect. We are working on a very large GeForce2 round up now and I have a GeForce2 in my own box. nVidia cards rock, their PR folks do not.

Gratis Internet-providers in Nederland bieden de snelste verbinding met het wereldwijde netwerk. Ze zijn gemiddeld tien procent vlotter dan hun concurrenten die zich wel voor een abonnement laten betalen. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van het Leisdse bureau Iping.

Aan de hand van dagelijkse metingen onder dertig Internet-aanbieders constateert Iping dat de gratis leveranciers in het tweede kwartaal aanmerkelijk beter presteerden. Dat geldt zowel voor modem- als ISDN-verbindingen.

Ook gisteren stond DPC weer op #2, maar deze keer was het verschil met TA niet zo groot meer, nog geen 40K.

Anandtech komt ons voor de tweede keer dit jaar verblijden met een roundup tussen verschillende moederborden die gebruik maken van de Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Ze testen 9 nieuwe plankjes tegen de vorige winnaar van de roundup: de Asus P3V4X. Er is niet veel veranderd sinds de laatste roundup, de Asus P3V4X is nog steeds een van de snelste planken, maar er zijn nu wel meer planken op de markt gekomen die de snelheid en features van Asus evenaren :

With the P3V4X from ASUS coming in as the winner from 5 months ago, we added 9 other boards in order to make this roundup complete. Because of the P3V4X's presence, we omitted the ASUS CUV4X which is pretty much identical to the P3V4X in terms of performance and stability, the only differences being that it is a Socket-370 solution and it takes advantage of the VIA 686A South Bridge whereas the P3V4X uses the dated 596B South Bridge.

iXBT-Labs heeft een review gemaakt van de AMD Thunderbird. Dit is de snelste x86 processor op het moment verkrijgbaar. Het geteste exemplaar is een Thunderbird 800. Hij moest het in de tests opnemen tegen een Athlon 800 en een Pentium III 800EB. Over de uitkomst kunnen we kort zijn, op 1 test na was de Thunderbird overal het snelst. Overklokken wilde echter niet lukken omdat er gelijk stabiliteits problemen optraden met de EV6 bus. Hier volgt de conclusie:

Unfortunately, we have to state that Thunderbird is nothing special in terms of the core architecture, as well as in terms of marketing and performance. Although AMD didn't aim at conquering Olympus with its new CPU: it was just a logical continuation of the Athlon family.

Thunderbird doesn't feature any innovations. AMD engineers simply changed the size, the location and the frequency of the L2 cache. That's why we saw very insignificant performance growth (or even none) compared to the old Athlon. As we have already said the processor architecture remained unchanged, even the L2 cache bus wasn't enhanced, which finally told on the performance and prevented L2 cache from showing its best.

As far as AMD's future plans are concerned, they aren't going to modify this bus up to the launching of Mustang, which will feature large on-die L2 cache. So, the only thing, which may help Athlon systems to perform better in the near future, is the use of DDR SDRAM memory, which seems to be not so far away already. The launching of the first Athlon chipset supporting DDR SDRAM, AMD 760, is planned for autumn. Well, can't wait to see it!

And in the meanwhile the question about Pentium III vs Athlon will still remain unanswered and only the personal likes and dislikes will influence the users' choice.

''But when we conducted our consumer survey, ... we still found that Napster usage is one of the strongest determinants of increased music buying.''

The study comes against the backdrop of a war between Napster and the music industry trade group Recording Industry Association of America, which claims that such software are tools to pirate digital music.

Nul Fris en Arcan brachten ons op de hoogte van dit bericht van TweakTown's AMD insider die beweert dat AMD speciale Athlon's gaat shippen zónder multiplier lock. Om te voorkomen dat er geremarkte Athlons in de omloop komen (zoals het geval was in Australië) zouden Award en AMI speciale biossen maken die de originele snelheid + de werkelijke snelheid weergeven, dus bv Athlon 700 @ 900MHz. Het klinkt allemaal erg mooi, maar uitereraard heb ik nogal twijfels over deze 'bron'. Deze hele actie zou overigens alleen voor Athlons (Thunderbirds) opgaan, Duron's blijven locked. Check zelf even het bericht:

Just recently ASUS released its statement about its new A7V motherboard we here at Tweaktown have recently received some information from ASUS and AMD. As many of us know ASUS plan to make a 2 versions of the ASUS A7V. One with no multiplier jumper block and one with the jumper block. Now this seems ok in theory but 99% of the AMD Athlon 2 (Thunderbird) will be unable to be changed, but word received from a source (who wishes to remain unknown) has stated that AMD will in the future produce a breed of Athlon 2 that will be multiplier adjustable. It will be set to a specific frequency on time of sale but with special jumper arrangements you will be able to change the multiplier.

We have some information that may interest you.

AMD have announced to us that they will be introducing a special Fab of Athlon with performance enhancing cache that will be multiplier unlocked. Award and AMI have also told us that they will be helping with a new BIOS code that will prevent remarking of the unlocked Athlon with performance enhancing cache.

Also we have heard that Award and Ami will be introducing a scheme to prevent resellers relabelling the CPU. According to the information received, Award will introduce a feature that will read the AMD Athlon CPUID code and will display the actual CPU's designated Speed and the overclocked speed. Eg. If you have a Athlon 2 700Mhz and have it clocked at 900Mhz on boot up the motherboard will bios will show up as: AMD Athlon 700 at 900MHz. This will prevent resellers from relabelling the 700Mhz CPU as a 900MHz for example.

Conclusion:
This seems like quite a good idea to help the overclockers out there who want to overclock their CPU's. of course you will loose your warranty on the overclocked CPU and no shipments of Duron will be unlocked (that sux) but as the saying goes "don't look a gift horse in the mouth". Keep those excellent CPU's coming AMD!

Planet Hardware heeft een review klaar van de Hercules 3D Prophet II MX videokaart gebaseerd op nVidia's budget GeForce2 MX chip. Standaard wordt deze kaart geklokt op 183/166MHz core / memory, helaas heeft de reviewer niet gekeken hoeveel er nog bij kan. De prestaties zijn in ieder geval erg goed, tenminste als je niet boven de 1024x786 @ 32-bit gaat gamen:

Overall, the GeForce2 MX's performance was exactly what we expected after looking at the chip's specifications. The lowered fill rate and memory bandwidth, when compared to those of a GeForce2 GTS chip, are really the Achilles heal of the card. NVIDIA knew this when they designed the chip, crippling it so it wouldn't compete directly against the GeForce2 GTS product.

But, when considering what the cost of this card will be once it gets out on the market in full force (probably around the $100 range), the performance is pretty good. When you compare the 3D Prophet II MX against the original GeForce SDR cards the performance is fairly close, with the MX edging out the GeForce SDR in some areas.

The 3D Prophet II MX is a great card for the audience its targeted at - Business and entry-level users. This card is also great for gamers that want to upgrade from their older cards (which we benchmarked in our Early 3D Cards article) without breaking the bank. For $100 you get 32MB of SDR RAM, stable and mature drivers, and GeForce level performance. Not a bad deal indeed.

The big news this month is that ATI's Radeon is at last available and is truly able to go head to head with the GeForce 2 GTS. The call between the latest products from ATI and NVIDIA is a tough one that only you can make. The GeForce 2 GTS has more raw power, but ATI's top notch 32-bit performance and feature set make it very appealing. However, the real question is how will ATI's drivers stand up over time. For now, that's our biggest concern with the Radeon.

Socket-A processors and the supporting motherboards are finally pretty easy to get a hold of online. Interestingly, the supply of processors seems to be greatly out running the supply of motherboards, especially since there are only a few on the market today. Gigabyte's GA-7ZM and FIC's AZ-11 are clearly the easiest to find, but the ASUS A7V promises to be the best option for overclockers once it becomes more available. Microstar's K7T Pro is also beginning to show up at online retailers.

SDRAM prices continue to inch up, while RDRAM has actually dropped a bit. Our sources tell us the trend may continue through the end of the year as memory manufacturers shift their focus towards upcoming memory types, including DDR SDRAM and RDRAM.

IBM's Deskstar 75GXP is now readily available and is included in most of these systems. It's one of the first Ultra ATA/100 drives on the market, but it takes more than just a new interface to claim the performance crown. Fortunately for IBM, they've come up with much more than just support for Ultra ATA/100.

Nadat we op Tweakers.net het nieuws van deel 2 hebben overgeslagen, kunnen we nu melden dat ze op FiringSquad deel 3 hebben staan van hoe videokaarten werken. In dit derde deel wordt verteld over PCI en AGP gevolgd door een flink stuk over 3D-kaarten. De quote is geplukt uit een stukje over 3D-rendering:

There are four basic steps to render a 3D image:

Transform: The CPU reads the 3D data, then interprets and generates the vertices and lines that are used to make up the model and manipulates them in 3D space.

Lighting: A few different types of 3D lighting are used, the most common of which is "vertex lighting". In this scheme, each vertex is given a light value, which is applied to the model by the processor, giving the model the illusion of being struck by an outside light source. The second, and only recently use method is called "Lightmapping", by which a pre-rendered bitmap image is laid upon the rendered output to create the illusion of light and shadow by darkening different areas of the map/model. Lightmapping is not true lighting at all since it's a pre-drawn image, and it handled during the rendering stage.

Triangle Setup and Clipping: Once the transform and lighting is done, the information is compiled, and the polygons are drawn into the frame buffer. Clipping is a mathematical process in which the system attempts to determine where polygons will not be seen and does not render them. The system still has to perform T&L functions for non-visible polygons however, because it needs to know where they are in case they're eventually seen.

Clipping is also a term used to describe a condition where two polygons visibly intersect each other, such as part of a weapon protruding through the characters arm.

Rendering: The final stage consists of converting the now compiled 3D image into scan line data for output to your monitor. Textures are applied to the images, filtering and any perspective corrections are done at this point. Finally the image is output to the screen, and then the entire process is repeated for each successive frame.

Sharky Extreme heeft een review gepost van de Chaintech 6OJV i815 moederplank met 6 PCI slots, 3 DIMM sloten, één AMR slotje en een onboard Creative Labs PCI 128 chip. Voor ons overklokkers is er de mogelijkheid om de busspeed vanuit het BIOS tot maximaal 150MHz omhoog te pompen. Uit de tests van Sharky Extreme blijkt dat de Asus CUSL2 in alle benchmarks sneller is dan deze Chaintech plaat, dus wat dat betreft weinig reden om 'm te kopen:

We can guarantee that the BIOS of the 6OJV won’t go down in history as the most feature complete, but it is definitely more overclocking-friendly than Chaintech’s past products. Since the i815 runs the memory and system busses asynchronously, there is the option to run the memory bus at either 100 or 133MHz. In addition, there are a few user-selectable FSB settings (up to 150MHz). Since we’ve heard from ASUS that they have clocked their CUSL2’s FSB to 166MHz reliably, there may still be headroom in the chipset that Chaintech isn’t taking advantage of.

There are a few minimalist memory options to tweak timing, but nothing fancy. The standard options we’ve come to expect from just about every manufacturer are all included, however, the performance enthusiast wouldn’t be overly impressed. One odd twist to the 6OJV is a lack of DIP switches. Instead, there are two jumpers to set the front side bus speed to either 100 or 133Mz.

Ik lees bij AMD Zone dat zij van A&L Computers de bevestiging hebben gekregen dat er Asus A7V mobo's met multiplier dipswitch in de omloop zijn. De eerdere beloftes van Asus lijken dus uit te komen:

Richard at A&I computers let me know that he has received some A7Vs with the clock multiplier dip switches. He took a Duron 600 and was able to get it to 857MHz. I'll have a WCPUID picture up later in the day.
