Na het bekend worden van het faillissement van Aureal is het erg stil geworden rondom dit bedrijf, toch erg bekend om de goede 3D geluid chipsets. Het lijkt erop dat de A3D 2.0 technologie niet voor eeuwig verloren gaat, in een brief van de U.S. Bankruptcy Court staat namelijk het volgende:

Dit betekend nog niet dat Guillemot de koper wordt, als iemand meer bied gaat de deal niet door, maar het is goed om te zien dat er weer enige beweging is gekomen in deze zaak .

GamePC heeft een review geschreven over de Asus A7V, een moederbord geschikt voor socket A CPU's. Deze kaart onderscheid zich op een flink aantal manieren van de concurrentie: ATA/100, CPU voltage riser en als laatste de beroemde dipswitches. Hieronder een stukkie uit de review:

Overclocking is what sets the A7V away from any other KT-133 board on the market, with its ability to modify the processor multiplier, right on the motherboard. Worldwide, overclockers and tweakers have beenin a frenzy trying to figure out a way to overclock the new Socket-A Athlons like "Golden Fingers" devices allowed for Slot-A Athlons to be overclocked so well. AMD recently announced that in an effort to thwart re-markers, they would be fully multiplier locking all Socket-A processors. Of course, this flew right in the face of AMD's claim of "We will never multiplier-lock our chips" claim they made before the initial AMD Athlon launch.

Almost immediately after the announcement, the overclocking communities set out on a quest to figure out how to unlock the chips, and amazingly, have been successful thus far. Of course, the methods they use either make you solder pins to the motherboard, or rip off/add pieces from the top of your processor. Both methods of multiplier manipulation aren't for the weak of heart, which is where Asus's A7V fills the gap. Asus has already done the modifications internally to their board, allowing you to easily switch the processors multiplier through a set of dipswitches on the motherboard.

[...] Even though we've only taken a short glance at the board, we can easily say that the Asus A7V is the KT-133 platform to beat. Not even mentioning the overclocking aspects of the board, it's still the nicest Socket-A motherboard we've had the chance of testing thus far. It's got a ton of useful features that are sure to impress the most hardware users, and it simply performs better than the competetion. There's been so much hype around this board that we would have figured it to be mostly overkill, fortunately, the A7V lived up to every expectation.

Het meest besproken feature van dit moederbord, de dipswitches:

worst schrijft: "De Duitse auteursrechtenorganisatie GEMA wil op nieuwe computers een kopieerheffing vragen, net zoals dat in Nederland gebeurt bij cassettebandjes en sinds kort cd-r's."

Als de Musikalische Aufführungs- und Mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA) haar zin krijgt zal dit beteken dat computers 41 mark duurder worden en cd-fikkers 17 mark meer gaan kosten. Deze maatregel moet ook nog met terugwerkende kracht tot 1 februari 1998 ingevoerd worden: een miljoenen strop voor de fabrikanten aldaar:

De Gesellschaft für Musikalische Aufführungs- und Mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA) zegt de wet aan haar zijde te hebben. Die legt nu al een kopieerheffing op voor video- en audio-recorders en voor onbespeelde videobanden en audiocassettes.
De GEMA ziet haar kans schoon na een uitspraak van het Duitse patent- en merkenbureau. Dat oordeelde in mei dat ook de digitale vermenigvuldiging van muziek door thuisgebruikers moet worden vergoed. Die uitspraak deed het Patent- und Markenamt in een zaak over cd-branders. Met deze apparaten kunnen via de computer perfecte kopieën worden gemaakt van audio-cd's.

Het Patent- und Markenamt vindt dat de fabrikanten van cd-branders een toeslag van 17 mark per apparaat (plus 7 procent btw) aan de GEMA moeten betalen met een terugwerkende kracht tot 1 februari 1998. Voor de Duitse computermakers betekent dat een miljoenenstrop, omdat ze de heffing niet meer aan de koper kunnen doorberekenen.

Om betaling af te dwingen, heeft de GEMA een proces aangekondigd tegen de grootste producent van cd-branders: Hewlett-Packard. Over mijn lijk, heeft HP al laten weten. Een brander is in principe bedoeld voor de opslag van computerbestanden, niet alleen voor muziek. Verder vindt de fabrikant de heffing van 17 mark te hoog. De toeslag voor een cassetterecorder bedraagt 5 mark, die voor video 12 mark.

Wél positief is dat we gisteren één plek overall zijn gestegen, zodat we overall nu op de 9e plek staan !

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 2e en heeft een kans van één op 31 om de sleutel te vinden!

De teller van de UMTS-veiling is deze week behoorlijk opgelopen. Aan het begin van deze week stond de teller nog maar op 1,28 miljard, vandaag is de teller de 5 miljard gepasseerd. KPN deed een bod van 1,3 Miljard op kavel B. Telfort staat momenteel met lege handen.

Op de laatste veilingdag van deze week voor de UMTS-frequenties is de teller opgelopen tot f.5,06 mrd. Donderdag was f.3,7 mrd bereikt, terwijl de oogst aan het begin van de week nog maar f.1,28 mrd was. De veiling vindt plaats in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen.

Telfort staat na de 278ste ronde met lege handen. Kavel B, tot nu toe in handen van het bedrijf, wordt nu door KPN Mobile ingenomen met een bod van f.1,3 mrd. Voor de vijf kavels (A, B, C, D en E) zijn zes bedrijven in de race.

Greg Hanna van Anandtech heeft een roundup gepubliceerd waarin 3 Home PNA kaarten worden vergeleken. Dit zijn kaarten die het mogelijk maken om een 10 Mbit netwerkje op te zetten over de telefoonlijn, zolang ze hetzelfde nummer hebben. De drie geteste kaarten zijn aan de hardware kant vrijwel identiek, alleen de garantie, software en prijs onderscheiden de kaarten van elkaar:

In de final SP1 zou deze informatie dus al toegevoegd moeten zijn. Bovendien was de te downloaden file "slechts" 62 Mb groot, terwijl Microsoft zelf heeft aangegeven dat de final version maar liefst 83 Mb zal zijn.
