The Tech Report schrijft naar aanleiding van een press release van S3, waarin staat dat S3 in gesprek is met verschillende bedrijven over de overname van hun graphics divisie, dat nVidia het wel eens kon gaan worden. S3 schijnt nogal wat interessante patenten te bezitten.

Another possible suitor is NVIDIA, who might be looking to get a hold of S3's graphics patents, designs, and engineering teams. Now here is something interesting. The two companies signed a broad cross-licensing deal not long ago, and NVIDIA moved to sell $400 million worth of stock today.

Note this bit of info from the NVIDIA press release: NVIDIA will use the proceeds of future sales of debt or common stock under the first registration statement to fund anticipated growth, including anticipated increases in inventory and accounts receivable; for potential acquisitions; [emphasis mine] for costs associated with NVIDIA's expected move to new facilities; and for general working capital. NVIDIA will not receive any proceeds from the sale of common stock by the selling stockholders.

Coincidence? Perhaps, but NVIDIA was sweet on S3's patent portfolio at the time they signed their cross-licensing deal. NVIDIA president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said at the time: Over the years, S3 has developed and acquired a rich portfolio of technologies in graphics, multimedia, microprocessors and system logic. Our license agreements with SGI and S3, combined with NVIDIA's rich technology patent portfolio, gives us a strong technology base on which to build winning products.

Sega, Nintendo en Electronic Arts stappen naar de rechter omdat Yahoo! naar hun mening te weinig doet tegen illegale software die wordt aangeboden op de online veiling van dit portal.

The lawsuit, which the manufacturers filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, accuses Yahoo of copyright and trademark infringement, unfair competition, and offering illegal devices for sale. The lawsuit asks the court to order Yahoo to stop the sales. It also seeks compensatory damages of up to $100,000 per copyright violation, and up to $2,500 for each sale of the hardware devices - some of which are called "Mod Chips" - that allow people to circumvent copyright protection, says Jeff Brown, a spokesman for Redwood City, Calif.-based Electronic Arts.

Yahoo spokeswoman Diane Hunt offers little comment on the lawsuit. "We're not aware of specific situations," she says.

The gamemakers claim people are selling the illegal items in Yahoo's auction area, and in the shopping area that Yahoo leases to outside merchants. "They are openly sold and labeled" with phrases like 'back up copy,' 'compilation disk' and 'never published,' according to Brown. "It's very widespread and blatant."

CD-R Info heeft eindelijk haar review gepost van de almachtige Plextor PlexWriter 12/4/32. De drive bleef zelfs onder de meest ermbarmelijke omstandigheden goed werken, en bleek ook over zeer goede leeskwaliteiten te beschikken. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Via de Wacky Webschuur kwam ik op dit artikel van Newz.nl waarin wordt verteld dat de Evangelische Omroep een internetabonnement gaat introduceren dat sites met porno, geweld, racisme en gevloek wegfiltert voordat de gebruiker het op zijn schermpie krijgt gedrukt. De dienst gaat heel toepasselijk 'Filternet' heten. De technische realisatie neemt World Online voor haar rekening.

De Evangelische Omroep begint 15 mei met een eigen internetprovider, Filternet geheten. De ISP filtert, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, sites met porno, geweld, racisme en gevloek voordat deze op het scherm verschijnen.

De technische realisatie is in handen van World Online. De EO voegt daar de filter aan toe. Deze zou overigens slechts als 'een grove hark' werken. Nooit zou alles gefilterd kunnen worden.

Toegang is er voor alle leden van de omroep. Een lidmaatschap kost f 99 of f 199, waarbij het dure abonnement voor een hogere snelheid en een betere inbelcapaciteit staat.

Zoals eerder werd gemeld is de dienst tot stand gekomen na wat contracten met NOB Interactive en TMF, waardoor er nu ook recente NOS Journaals, actuele filmtrailers en clips van de best verkopende singles uit de top 40 te zien zijn voor de verse abonnees:

Planet Internet wil zich duidelijk op contentgebied onderscheiden van andere ADSL aanbieders als XS4ALL en Sonera. De internetaanbieder concurreert met haar twee pakketten niet op prijsgebied.

Net.Speed Comfort kost inclusief Mxstream Basic, het ADSL basispakket van KPN, 99,00 gulden per maand. De klant krijgt daarvoor 512 kbps downstream en 64 kbps upstream. Een abonnement op Net.Speed Advanced kost 175 gulden per maand en is gebaseerd op Mxstream Extra (1024 kbps downstream en 256 kbps upstream).

Naast de abonnementskosten zijn ook forse aansluitkosten verschuldigd. Voor de hardware, een Alcatel ADSL modem, splitter, software en montage berekent KPN een bedrag van 650 gulden. Er is onduidelijkheid over de beschikbaarheid van een doe-het-zelfpakket van 325 gulden. Dat zou in mei beschikbaar zijn, maar loopt volgens bronnen vertraging op.

Nu.nl brengt het blije bericht dat wij Nederlanders binnen Europa wat betreft internetgebruik bij de top 6 behoren. Europa wint bovendien terrein ten opzichte van de VS, waar 50% van de bevolking toegang heeft tot internet (thanks Paul voor de tip):

Nederland neemt binnen Europa de zesde plaats in qua internetgebruik. Alleen de Scandinaviërs en Zwitsers surfen meer. Uit een telefonische enquête van de Pan Europese Internet Monitor blijkt dat 34 procent van de Europese bevolking van 15 jaar en ouder toegang heeft tot internet.

Het internetgebruik in Europa verschilt sterk per land. De Scandinaviërs
halen het gemiddelde flink op. In Zweden is 53,3 procent van de
bevolking online geweest in de afgelopen twee weken. Duitsland,
Frankrijk, Italië en België tonen zich minder modern en liggen beneden

De Linuxwereld reageert met verbazing en woede op het nieuws. Matto Fransen van de Nederlandse Linuxgebruikersgroep is zich kapot geschrokken. "Ik kan er niets positiefs over zeggen. Het is heel jammer dat het domein in handen is gekomen van een commercieel bedrijf. Het is gewoon uitbating van een sterke naam", aldus de voorzitter van de club die het enthousiasme voorprobeert te vergroten.

Ook Rik van Riel en Maarten van Steenbergen van het onafhankelijke nl.linux.org zijn niet gelukkig met de gang van zaken. Beide zijn van mening dat linux.nl niet aan één bedrijf zou moeten behoren. News.com schrijft dat Seagate Technology voor 20 miljard dollar wordt overgenomen door Veritas Software. De harddisk divisie wordt eigendom van een investeringsmaatschappij:

Seagate Technology, the company that helped create the disk drive business, announced today it will be bought by Veritas Software and an investment group in a complex $20 billion deal.

[...] Simultaneously, Seagate's hard drive business will be acquired by a group of investors led by Silver Lake Partners, an investment group that includes venture capitalists Kleiner, Perkins, Jim Davidson and Roger MacNamee, among others. Seagate will then become a private concern for the immediate future. The Texas Pacific Group is also an investor.

The investment group will pay approximately $2 billion in stock and cash for the assets of the hard drive business. The Silver Lake investors group originated and led the transaction, according to the companies.

Infoworld kreeg uit een telefonisch interview met Drew Prairie van AMD te horen dat de Spitfire (low-end Athlon) van 128KB L2 cache voorzien zal zijn. Hiermee ontwazigt hij de speculaties over 64 of 128KB L2 cache op de Spitfire:

Meanwhile, AMD's Spitfire is based on the same processor core as the company's high-end Athlon processor, AMD spokesman Drew Prairie said in a phone interview Tuesday. The chips are expected to carry the same 128KB of Level 2 cache as the Celeron, and also include AMD's 3DNow instruction set, an approximate equivalent to Intel's SSE.

EBN Online meldt in een artikel over de release van de nieuwe Celeron dat de Pentium III Xeon 700 en 800 met een maand gedelayed is:

Aside from adjusting the release date of certain microprocessors by about a week, OEM sources say that Intel's product roadmap has been left largely intact since Jan. [http://www.ebnonline.com/digest/story/OEG20000211S0068] While 633- and 667-MHz desktop Celerons are still slated for launch on April 26, most of Intel's upcoming releases will be mobile microprocessors: a 700-MHz chip on April 17th and a Celeron on April 24th, the sources said.

As of now, the only significant adjustment to the microprocessor roadmap is a month's delay in the 700- and 800-MHz Xeon, the fastest Xeons to feature large 1- and 2-Mbyte-level caches in quite some time. As of now, it is unclear whether the delay of the new Xeons, now slated for May 22, represents a manufacturing issue, as one source suggested, or merely an adjustment in Intel's schedule of product releases. An Intel spokesman at the company's Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters said he was unaware of any product delays.

Volgens MacUser.co.uk zullen de nieuwe PowerMacs met Motorola G4e processor dit jaar kloksnelheden van 800MHz bereiken. Een 1GHz model volgt in het eerste kwartaal van 2001. De G4e wordt onder andere gekenmerkt door een 256KB groot full speed on-die L2 cache, diepere pipelines en extra integer units (meer info daarover vind je in deze nieuwsposting van vorige week):

The new version of the 7400 is expected to be initially released in 600, 700 and 800MHz versions, with a 1GHz version to follow in the first quarter of 2001. However, the product is much more than a simply speed increase, and adds a 256Kb Level 2 cache on the chip, running at the same speed as the processor. The chip also adds support for 64- and 128-bit MaxBus, backside caches of up to 4Mb, and better support for multiprocessing. Importantly for the Mac, it also adds a second AltiVec vector-processing unit, which should significantly increase performance on applications that are enhanced to take advantage of AltiVec.

Of high importance for Apple will be the power requirements of the new processor, which, according to the AIM sources, will be 'much lower than the current series, and maybe even cooler than the current G3 [740]'. This means that Apple will be able to finally build a PowerBook G4.

Perseus schrijft: "Mega kabel exploitant UPC koopt waarschijnlijk per 31 maart voor 157 miljoen gulden de Haarlemse kabel. Kabelinternet wordt in Haarlem momenteel door Sonera verzorgd, maar zodra het contract met Sonera is verlopen zal deze verdwijnen ten gunste van UPC's eigen Chello":

Haarlemmers met een internet-kabelabonnement bij Sonera hebben een probleem. UPC wil alleen haar eigen internetaanbieder Chello op haar netwerk toelaten. Vanaf 1 oktober is deze dienst in Haarlem beschikbaar. Computergebruikers hebben vooralsnog de keuze tussen Sonera en Chello. Voor zolang het duurt. Zodra de eerder afgesloten overeenkomst tussen Sonera en Kabel Haarlem afloopt, betekent dat het einde van Sonera in Haarlem. UPC is niet van plan het contract te verlengen en begunstigt daarmee haar eigen Chello. Het Amerikaanse bedrijf heeft wel toegezegd te zijner tijd een passend aanbod te doen aan de gebruikers van Sonera. Het is niet mogelijk om via één internetaansluiting met meerdere computers tegelijk op het internet te surfen. Tenzij hier weer extra voor wordt betaald.

Eigenlijk had ik hier toch veel liever iets gelezen over een dual athlon chipset ipv dual pentium maar dat komt vast nog wel.

Op haaitje extreme hebben ze een roadmap gepost voor ''alle'' komende Intel CPU's en chipsets voor dit jaar en gedeeltelijk voor volgend jaar:

• Dropping CPU prices and rising speeds - A $754 Pentium III 1GHz in September with the 733MHz version costing a mere $193.
• Faster Celerons with SSE - While still using the old 66MHz FSB, all Celerons above 600MHz will come with SSE and their old, low prices.
• i815 and i815E - The new mid-range/low-end chipsets from Intel will add AGP expansion so you can replace the slow built-in Intel video with a quality fast 3D card.
• ICH2 - Integrated Controller Hub 2 brings ATA100, dual master USB (twice the bandwidth in total), integrated LAN and integrated audio to Intel's i815E and i820E.

The Dell Dimension XPS B 1000r may be a bit ahead of the market. At $4000, it has a limited audience. However, I am positive, this is the fastest computer I have ever used. Given the proper time to benchmark, I know that I could have found the issues causing the "low" Quake3 scores. The components inside are top-notch, as are the case and hardware surrounding the components.

Concerning the GeForce Plus, the quality of the card is very high. The circuit board is well designed and does include the TV-Out option. However, I would like to see a higher quality heatsink and fan combination on the card, given the time taken to design additional cooling for the processor.

Intel heeft blijkbaar zijn consequenties getrokken uit de massale kritiek op het Processor Serial Number in de Pentium III, want volgens Andreas Stiller van c't is dit omstreden serienummertje op de Coppermine Celeron hardwarematig kaputt gemaakt. Op Intel's Security Page wordt de PSN inmiddels ook niet meer genoemd:

Betanews meldt dat Microsoft, QWest, de University of Washington en the Information Science Institute een nieuw Internet II snelheidsrecord hebben geboekt. In 82 seconde werd 8,4GB streaming video over een lijntje van 5.626 kilometer gepompt. Dit komt neer op een gemiddelde snelheid van 957 megabit per seconde:
