Bij Overclockers' Workbench heeft men een artikel geschreven over het rondmaken van flatcables. Hierdoor ziet ten eerste je kast er een stuk beter uit, en wordt bovendien de airflow in je kast verbeterd:

Het begon allemaal met geruchten in een thread op 3dfx Gamers, nVidia zou niet al te vriendelijk gevraagd hebben aan Riva 3D, een fansite, om hun review van de Voodoo5 weg te halen... het was te positief ten opzichte van hun GeForce2. In eerste instantie hebben ze daar aan toegegeven, en een message neergezet in de trant van 'we zijn bezig met het updaten van deze review'. Het is natuurlijk een _bijzonder_ slechte zaak als nVidia zegt: "jij krijgt van ons nooit meer materiaal (videokaart, info, press releases etc.) als jij niet snel wat negatiever gaat praten over de concurrent". Gelukkig heeft Riva 3D de juiste stap genomen en niet toegegeven aan nVidia's eisen: ze hebben de review weer terug gezet en een verhelderende open brief geschreven. Hieronder een kleine quote:

I will say that I was forwarded an email exchange between a webmaster and Derek Perez in which Perez was threatening no interviews, no communication, no review boards, etc., unless that webmaster converted his site into an Nvidia fan site. As I read it the first time I honestly couldn't believe what I was reading; call me naive, but I was shocked that a large company would try to coerce and bully the online media in such an unethical fashion. The good thing is that this particular webmaster didn't brook Perez's slimey tactics and called him right out on the carpet for such behavior. The problem is, however, how many people out there would be as firm in their resolution to maintain journalistic integrity?

Op Tech Extreme is een review online gezet van het 2CoolPC cooling system, een innovatief apparaatje om de airflow in je kast sterk te verbeteren en om beter te koelen. Het apparaatje bleek zijn werk boven verwachting te doen, en de reviewer kon 6 fans verwijderen uit zijn kast door deze erin te plaatsen, met een nog beter resultaat.

Currently in the test system I have three intake fans, two in the front at the bottom and one in the upper part of the case near the drive bays. I also have three exhaust fans, one behind both of my CPU's, one at the top in the back, and one at the top in front by the drive bays. In addition to those fans I also have two fans on each of the CPU's.

(...) Just to clarify I unplugged six fans. I thought I would put the 2coolPC to the test. I then connected the 2coolPC and powered the PC back on. Now I have just the 2coolPC and the four fans on my CPU's (two on each) connected. I ran the PC at idle for 15 minutes and my CPU temp dropped to 35 C and 95 F.

My system temp dropped as well to 33 C 91 F. I was amazed, how can this device take the place of 6 of my fans? So then I ran the 3Dmark2000 benchmark again three time's in a row. To my surprise my CPU temp was now at 40 C 104 F, and my system temp was at 38 C 101 F. That's what it was at idle with all ten fans! I can't explain it but it works.

Bij Nu.nl valt te lezen dat Philips de productie van CD-ReWriters gaat verdubbelen om aan de groeiende vraag te voldoen. Als extra maatregel wordt er in de Filipijnen een extra fabriekje gesticht:

Eind volgend jaar moet het bedrijfsonderdeel Philips Componenten door deze capaciteitsvergroting op een productie van 20 miljoen stuks per jaar komen.

"Cd-branders zijn bij zowel fabrikanten als consumenten populair", verklaart een woordvoerder van Philips. "Veel consumenten willen hun computer thuis opwaarderen met een eigen brander en steeds meer grote leveranciers rusten hun computers standaard uit met een brander".

De drive ziet er erg strak uit en ondersteunt CD-RW's, Dynamic Bass Boost, Electronic Shock Protection, Variable Bit Rate MP3's en MP3's tot een Bit Rate van 320kbps. De enige feature die er helaas niet op zit is ID3 Tag weergave. De prijs zal $200 Dollar bedragen.

Sony will cooperate with Dutch electronics group Philips Electronics NV in licensing the new CDs, enabling other firms to produce discs with the same format.

The plan reflects the growing popularity of CDs used to store data for personal computers on the back of surging global PC use, Sony said. WebWereld laat in dit bericht weten dat de Business Software Alliance dit jaar al zo'n anderhalf miljoen Dollar aan schadevergoeding heeft ontvangen van softwarepiraten uit Centraal-Europa:

Met de kopieerders is een schikking overeengekomen vanwege hun betrokkenheid bij illegaal gekopieerde en gedistribueerde software. De namen van de betrokken partijen worden door de BSA geheim gehouden.

Daarnaast moet de software eerst worden onderzocht op inhoud, gecodeerde boodschappen en de unieke codes die aan legale CD-ROM's worden toegevoegd. Vanwege de toename aan illegale soft-ware in Europa, heeft BSA het initiatief genomen tot een gedragscode.

The Register meldt dat we aan het eind van de maand een paar stevige prijsverlagingen van AMD kunnen verwachten. De prijsverlagingen moeten vooral in het gebied van de 1GHz CPU's plaatsvinden en niet zo weinig ook: volgens The Register gaan de prijzen met ongeveer 40 procent naar beneden. Dit is niet misselijk (als dit echt waar is), het zou betekenen dat de prijs van een 1GHz CPU van 2500 gulden naar 1500 gulden gaat zakken!:

PlanetHardware zet in dit artikel een Intel Celeron 700 en een Duron 700 tegenover elkaar. De resultaten mogen niet echt verassend meer zijn: de Duron 700 presteert in 6 van de 7 benchmarks beter dan de Celeron, en in de 7e gelijk aan Intel's kindje. Verder wordt in elke benchmark ook een Pentium III 1GHz opgenomen, die sneller is dan beide processors (duh). De Celeron is volgens PlanetHardware nog lang niet dood, maar de Duron is de nieuwe kampioen.

The Duron is a better deal for buyers who are looking a full system upgrade in the face, thanks to its market segment leading performance and aggressive price tag. It excels in any application that's thrown at it, and it's equally at home playing games or crunching spreadsheet formulas. AMD really has a home run on its hands with their new chip, and when we think about how its full potential still isn't known due to the delay in getting DDR SDRAM-supporting mainboards to the market, we come away very impressed.

The Celeron is by no means dead, and the reports of its death are premature in our opinion considering that the growth of the low-end PC market in second and third world nations is just beginning to take off. But the Celeron also is no longer the performance leader within the category that it gave birth to, and because of that the Duron 700 is now our new value-processor "Grand Champion".

Ennehh... Kijk uit voor ladders!

Voor de zeer handige Tweakers onder ons met een ouder socket370 moederbord hebben ze bij "Buy with Sense!" (whats in a name) een artikel geplaatst hoe je zo'n mamaplank geschikt kan maken voor FCPGA processoren. Een beetje handig zijn met een soldeerboutje is wel een vereiste. Na het doorverbinden van de AH4 (RESET#) en X4 (RESET2#) pinnen en het verwijderen van de AM2 pin in de socket zelf is de klus geklaard. Als voorbeeld is een Abit ZM6 genomen die ze dus bewerkt hebben.

So now we have the RESET signal active. What is left is pin AM2. On PPGA mainbords it is connected to the ground. In this condition the FCPGA processor wont boot. The solution is simple. We must disconnect it. Tom Pabst suggested removing the pin from the processor, but for me this was unacceptable option, because we wouldn`t be able to respect the guarranty, if something would happen to processor in the future. I thought - if we can`t remove the pin from the processor, we must do it from the socket.[break]En over de AM2 pin:[/break]THIS IS THE VERY DELICATE AND TIME CONSUMING OPERATION. I HAVE LOST ABOUT HALF OF AN HOUR TO REMOVE THE PIN FROM THE SOCKET. The pins are very small and you must be very carefull to don`t harm the others, because that would mean the mainboard`s failure. To remove the pin i have moved the needle from the right to the left until the pin would broke. This was the only way i can do it. At first i have tried to use also the soldering iron, but it wont work.

En nadeel is dat je de garantie op het mobo waarschijnlijk kwijt bent. Natuurlijk kan men dit ook uitvoeren met slotkets, maar ik denk dat het dan makkelijker is om eentje te kopen die al FCPGA compatible is.

Webwereld bericht dat de uitgever VNU een belang van 58,7 procent heeft verworven in de Ilse Media Groep, bekend van sites zoals Nu.nl, Chat.nl en uiteraard het welbekende zoekmachientje. Door de aankoop ontstaat het grootste internetbedrijf van Nederland. Ilse.nl en Startpagina.nl, dat eerder dit jaar door VNU werd overgenomen, staan beide bovenaan in de marktonderzoeken van Multiscope:

VNU verwerft een belang van 58,7 procent in Ilse. De overname wordt grotendeels betaald met content, aangevuld met een niet gespecificeerde overnamesom. Ilse zal de sites van VNU exploiteren en krijgt licenties voor het gebruik van merk- en titelnamen als Libelle.nl

Volgens VNU zal de Ilse Media Groep na integratie met VNU 'de belangrijkste informatiebron op internet worden'. De gezamenlijke sites zijn op dit moment goed voor meer dan één miljard pageviews per jaar, meldt de uitgever. Bij de Ilse Media Groep werken ruim 50 mensen. De mensen van JDAlpha hebben een review online gekicked van de Kenwood TrueX 72X CD-ROM speler. Zoals bekend werkt deze speler met meerdere lasers tegelijk (zeven in totaal), en moet daardoor dan ook echt de 72X snelheid behalen. Volgens de testen van JDAlpha voldoet de Kenwood aan de verwachtingen, alleen de vraag is of het nog wel verstandig is om deze (dure) CD-ROM speler te kopen.

Well, is this CD-ROM, created by Kenwood with it's True X techonology, fast? We don't think so, we know so. Spinning at 72X, and when calculated, we were able to rate it at delivering an astounding 7.1MB/sec transfer rate when copying the 573MB worth of Quake 3 files, this CD-ROM is a very high performer.

But this day in age, we all know we need something that does more than read CD's at blazing speeds. A year or so ago, I would have recommended that you buy a CD-ROM with the True X techonology, whether it be 42x, 52x or any speed, but now I would not.

With this much money being spent on a CD-ROM drive, get yourself a DVD-ROM or a CD-RW Drive. I mean, come on people, the fastest required CD-ROM for almost every game is no larger than 8x MAX, what are you going to do with 72X?!?

Or you could just do what I did and get a True 72x and a CD Writer. What do you think Dan's been thinking about doing now that he already has a True X Drive? He's not going to get rid of it.

AnandTech heeft een handige guide geschreven voor mensen die een systeem willen bouwen gebaseerd op de BX chipset met een 133MHz FSB maar niet weten welke videokaart ze erin moeten zetten. AnandTech heeft 27 videokaarten op problemen getest met een 89MHz en 98MHz AGP busspeed. Het blijkt dat bijna alle kaarten probleemloos werken met een FSB van 133 of 148MHz zolang Sidebanding uit staat en er geen sticker op de kaart zit waarop de naam Savage is te bespeuren :

With the memory and PCI divider problems encountered by the pioneerers of the 133 MHz FSB well behind us, the only problem that has been standing in the way of the BX-133's success has been the AGP divider. AnandTech is here to remove that road block as well, clearing the path to success.

It seems that almost every newer card on the market today will function at a 133 MHz FSB or even a 148 MHz FSB. This is good news not only for overclockers who wish to verify compatibility before upgrading their video card but also for those thinking about a BX-133 conversion in the future.

It is possible as well as feasible to have PowerStrip run every startup to disable SBA, however it is simpler and cleaner to use a card that has this feature disabled straight from the factory. The only card to stay very far away from is the Savage 2000, as it will not function at all in an overclocked system.

mr nice guy meldt dat Tommies Hardware Guide een review heeft gemaakt van de Gainward CARDEXpert GeForce2 GTS. Deze kaart is uitgerust met 64MB 5,0 ns DDR Ram wat standaard op 400MHz loopt. Aangezien het geheugen bij de GeForce2 de grote bottleneck is snel geheugen helemaal niet fout, zeker als je het geheugen dan ook nog eens kan overclocken naar 472MHz .

Gainward has certainly shown that it knows how to put its competition in the GeForce 2 GTS card arena to shame. While most card makers concentrate on crazy cooling solutions for a GeForce 2 GTS chip, which hardly benefits from overclocking whatsoever, Gainward stuck to a reasonable heat sink and added some kick-ass memory instead. You may have to pay some 100 bucks more than for an average GeForce 2 GTS card, which is also not exactly a bad performer.

Before some of you should get really excited about this card, I'd like to mention a few unanswered questions. As it seems to me, it's not quite clear yet when and in which volume the card will actually be released. This is obviously depending heavily on the availability of 5 ns DDR SDRAM in volume. We also don't know if all future CARDEXpert cards will be quite as overclockable as our sample. Gainward assured us however, that they guarantee 450 MHz memory and 220 MHz chip clock, which sounds very reasonable. Last but not least we should also not forget that NVIDIA will again have a new high-end chip coming out in the September/October time frame. This chip will most likely have overcome the current memory problems of GeForce 2 GTS.

C't heeft de resultaten gepubliceerd van een test waarin 24 AMD 750 en VIA KX133 mobo's aan een Thunderbird-compatibiliteits check werden onderworpen. Vrijwel alle Irongate mobo's functioneerden probleemloos in combinatie met een 700MHz Thunderbird, maar bij de KX133 mobo's waren er zoals verwacht meer problemen. De Gigabyte GA-7VX en Soyo SY-K7VIA faalden in alle (twee) tests, de Abit KA7, AOpen AK72, Biostar M7MKE, NMC 7VAX en Tyan Trinity K7 voltooiden één test en de Asus K7V, Chaintech 7ATAO, Epox 7KXA, Jetway 771AS, QDI KinetiZ 7A en Soltek 77KV doorliepen beide tests met succes:

Nahezu alle Boards mit AMDs Irongate-Chipsatz funktionierten ohne Einschränkungen mit beiden Prozessoren. Die einzigen Ausnahmen waren das Modell K7A750 von Luckystar und das MS-6167 von MSI. Beide wollten mit keiner unserer CPUs booten. Bei den Platinen mit VIAs KX133 wollte lediglich das Soyo-Board K7AIA mit keiner der beiden Prozessoren zusammenarbeiten. Drei weitere Boards verweigerten mit der neueren CPU den Dienst, sieben akzeptierten dagegen beide Testprozessoren. Gigabytes GA-7VX bootete zwar mit beiden Prozessoren, stürzte aber beim Unreal-Turnament-Test ab. Mit einem alten Athlon-Prozessor arbeitete es aber stabil.

Trotz dieser recht ermutigenden Ergebnisses bleibt der Kauf eines T-Bird im Slot A aber ein Vabanquespiel. Da es offensichtlich deutliche Streuungen unter den im Handel kursierenden CPUs gibt, kann man nie völlig sicher sein, dass man nicht doch ein Exemplar erwischt, das im vorhandenen Board nicht funktioniert. Rivastation meldt dat zij van Abit hebben gehoord dat zij een aantal GeForce2 MX videokaarten op de planning hebben staan. Er zullen drie versies geproduceerd worden, een model met TV-Out en DVI interface, een model met alleen TV-Out en een kale versie zonder TV troep.

De GeForce2 MX is een gemankeerde GeForce2 met 2 pipelines, een 175MHz core clock en 166MHz SDR SDRAM. Check de search voor reviews.

Overclockers Australia heeft een review gepost van een CAS2 PC133 kwaliteits DIMM van Corsair. Vanzelfsprekend werd het reepje door onze Australische kameraden aan een harde overclocking test onderworpen. Op een CAS latency setting van 2 werd een maximale kloksnelheid van 160MHz behaald. De maximale kloksnelheid op een CAS3 setting kon zelfs helemaal niet gevonden worden, de geheugen bus van de moederplank kon simpelweg niet hard genoeg om de snelheidslimiet te bereiken. De DIMMetjes werden op een 1080MHz Athlon gebenchmarked met de SiSoft memory benchmark en bereikten erg strakke resultaten van 524MB/s CPU en 609MB/s FPU:

On the KA7 I managed to get the Corsair stick running at 160MHz @ CAS2. This is 117Mhz FSB with the +3 MHz option, ram running at FSB+PCI (120 + 40 for a total of 160MHz). The Athlon's core was at 1080MHz by this stage, watercooled at 1.8v. 160MHz @ CAS2 is, quite frankly, spectacular.

The only time I've seen a Sandra benchmark higher than that is in some pre-release Willamette (Pentium4) shots - but it's got a 400MHz FSB. With this setting I was getting nearly 140fps in the Q3 timedemo. After about 3 runs of the timedemo I started getting some errors but I suspect this was due to the video card not coping with the high AGP speed, not an SDRAM problem. Clocking it back to 117MHz, with the ram at 156MHz, it was rock-stable. This is still with "Turbo" timing and 4-way interleaving on - the fastest timing settings available.

And, the CAS3 setting? Well, embarrassingly enough, I can't tell you. I don't have a motherboard here capable of reaching this ram's CAS3 limit.

Spec.org (Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation) heeft de resultaten van hun SpecWeb99 benchmark gepubliceerd. Onder de inzendingen bevinden zich twee vrijwel identieke Dell PowerEdge 6400 servers met vier 700MHz PIII-Xeon CPU's en vier 1Gigabit NICs. Op de ene machine draaide Windows 2000 met Internet Information Server 5.0 en op de andere Red Hat met de TUX 1.0 webserver. De Linux config haalde erg hoge resultaten in de benchmark: 4200 simultane connecties met een bandbreedte van elk 350Kbit/s (samen bijna 1,5Gb/s). Dit is bijna drie keer zoveel dan het Win2k systeem, dat niet verder kwam dan 1598 connecties van 330Kbit/s.

Of de resultaten representatief zijn voor een praktijk situatie is uiteraard sterk te betwijfelen. De gebruikte TUX webserver lijkt een kernel patch van Red Hat te zijn. Waarschijnlijk gaat 't om een erg kale webserver die niet veel meer kan dan het serveren van statische files, niet vergelijkbaar dus met compleet toegeruste webservers zoals Apache en IIS. Een webserver doet tegenwoordig veel meer dan het leveren van simpele statische plaatjes en html files (neem als voorbeeld Tweakers.net waarbij vrijwel alles dynamisch uit een database wordt getrokken). Een bandbreedte van 1,5Gb/s voor één server is ook niet realistisch, veel relatief kleine webhosts (bijvoorbeeld die in Nederland) hebben niet eens zoveel capaciteit.

Voor Linux fanaten zijn de uitkomsten in ieder geval erg prettig, zeker na het Mindcraft fiasco van vorig jaar (uit een door Microsoft gesponsorde test van Mindcraft bleek dat NT onder discutabele omstandigheden sneller was dan Linux. Later werd door c't een test opgezet waaruit Linux wel als winnaar naar buiten kwam).

Doordat de proxy van AnandTech die een paar dagen kapot was, gisteren voor het eerst weer flushte, staan ze met ruim 2.2M blokjes ver boven ons, alhoewel wij het ook lang niet slecht deden voor een normale dag: bijna 1.2M blokjes.

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 2e en heeft een kans van één op 40 om de sleutel te vinden!

LSI Logic heeft aangekondigd dat het eind dit jaar met een dual channel Ultra320 controller op de markt komt. De nieuwe SYM53C1030 chip van LSI is evenals de vorige week aangekondigde Ultra320 controller van Adaptec uitgerust met een PCI-X interface. Deze opvolger van de 66MHz 64-bit PCI specs verhoogt de kloksnelheid van de PCI bus naar 133MHz, waardoor maximaal 1,06Gig per seconde heen en weer gepompt kan worden. Dit is voldoende om de theoretische bandbreedte van twee Ultra320 channels bij te benen. De SCSI en Fibre Channel versies van de nieuwe LSI controllers zijn driver compatible:

Kaum haben SCSI-Festplatten und -Hostadapter den Generationswechsel auf Ultra160 SCSI vollzogen, da taucht am Horizont bereits die nächste Version der SCSI-Schnittstelle auf: Ultra320 SCSI soll das Tempo gegenüber Ultra160 auf nunmehr 320 MByte/s verdoppeln und zukünftigen High-End-Speicherlösungen zum nötigen Durchsatz verhelfen. Mit dem SYM53C1030 hat LSI Logic einen Hostadapter-Chip angekündigt, der gleich zwei Ultra-320-SCSI-Kanäle an Bord hat. Deren theoretischer Gesamtdurchsatz von 640 MByte/s würde selbst einen 64-bittigen 66-MHz-PCI-Bus überfordern. Deswegen setzt LSI Logic gleich auf die nächste PCI-Generation und stattet den Chip mit einem PCI-X-Interface aus, das bei 133 MHz bis zu 1066 MByte/s übertragen kann.

Den neuen Chip will LSI Logic ab dem vierten Quartal 2000 ausliefern. Hardware-Entwickler können aber schon jetzt loslegen, denn der pinkompatible Vorgänger SYM53C1010R mit zwei Ultra160-SCSI-Kanälen ist ab sofort verfügbar. Die "Fusion"-Architektur der neuen Chips bietet eine einheitliche Programmierschnittstelle für SCSI und Fibre Channel. So muss nur noch ein einziger Treiber entwickelt werden, der automatisch beide Interfaces unterstützt.

De Korea Herald schrijft dat een Koreaans bedrijf een versie van linux heeft ontwikkeld die geschikt is om op mobiele telefoons te draaien.

In de praktijk gaat dat waarschijnlijk betekenen dat je ook spelletjes van het net kan gaan downloaden als de ingebouwde drie op je Nokia je gaan vervelen

The company has recently succeeded in developing a Linux operating system, called "Tynux," for use in wireless Internet access terminals including cellular phones.

"Mobile phones offer fixed interface and applications that users can's change. With the open-source operating system, they will be able to change the configuration and programs to their tastes," Chang Jong-a, an official of the company.

The company is currently developing commercial wireless Internet devices, jointly with companies including SK TeleCom. The company plans to optimize the system further for other applications including personal digital assistants, videophones and set-top box.

De Britse krant The Independent heeft de hand weten te leggen op een aantal geheime documenten, waaruit blijkt dat de Verenigde Staten het intelligentie-netwerk Echelon inderdaad gebruiken om europese bedrijven te bespioneren.

In a March article for the Wall Street Journal, entitled "Why we spy on our allies", former CIA director James Woolsey claimed there was only one reason why the CIA tracked European companies. "Most European technology just isn't worth our stealing." he wrote. "We have spied on you because you bribe. Your companies' products are often more costly, less technically advanced, or both, than your American competitors." Yet some of the earliest deals clinched by US "advocacy" with CIA support are among the most corrupt deals of all time. In 1994, President Clinton signed off on $40bn of business agreements between Indonesia and US firms on one day. Among the deals was a $2.6bn power plant at Paiton, Java. At the time the contract was signed, the US knew one of President Suharto's daughters had been cut in on the deal, and was given a stake in the project worth more than $150m.
