Silicon Graphics heeft vandaag op de SigGraph 2000 conferentie in New Orleans een nieuwe lijn Onyx en Origin 3000 servers aangekondigd. De systemen zijn volledig modulair opgebouwd, wat basicly wil zeggen dat je ze kunt uitbreiden en upgraden als ware het simpele PC's. Verder is alles natuurlijk super bruut uitgevoerd: maximaal 512 CPU's, 8MB L2 cache per processor, maximaal 2 Terabyte RAM, tot 716GB/sec bandbreedte en maximaal 16 InfiniteReality3 graphics pipelines. Deze InfiniteReality3 pipelines werken met 48-bit kleur en ondersteunen 8*8 anti-aliasing, maximaal 256MB texture RAM en maximaal 320MB frame buffer RAM per pipeline. Dit alles zit verpakt in één machine, het is dus geen cluster van meerdere aan elkaar geknoopte bakken:
Earlier today from SIGGRAPH, SGI announced the Onyx and Origin 3000 series, the successors to their wildly-popular Origin 2000 and Onyx2 systems. While similar to the machines they replace, the new 3000 series is built from a series of modular "bricks". This allows for easier configuration and modifications. Perhaps the most amazing features of these new systems is nothing new, but rather the way SGI has been doing things for quite some time... rather than being a cluster of machines, the Onyx and Origin are each one single machine with massive amounts of shared bandwidth, memory, and cache. They also run SGI's OS, IRIX 6.5. This is true scalability, the same exact software run on an Octane, O2, or even an Indy can be deployed on the larger systems.As for performance, the mind-blowing numbers speak for themselves. Intel spokesman George Alfs said today that the company will come out with a chipset, a crucial
set of chips that connect the processor with the rest of the computer, that will allow computer
makers to build Pentium 4 computers with ordinary SDRAM memory running at 133 MHz.


Enhanced Memory Systems hat erstmals die Performance seiner PC133 High Speed SDRAM (HSDRAM) Module unter Beweis gestellt. Das auf der Platform 2000 Konferenz vorgestellte Referenzdesign lief angeblich 28 bis 49 Prozent schneller als herkömmliches SDRAM. Die Zugriffszeit des HSDRAM Speicher betrug dabei 4,9 ns. Der Preis für die fixen Speicherriegel liegt bei ca. 200 Mark für ein 64 MByte-Modul und ca. 350 Mark für einen 128 MByte Baustein.

Sharp Corp. announced an LCD technology last week that
will take its active-matrix displays into new realms of size and
resolution. The ultra-high-aperture (UHA) technology will debut in a
28-inch-diagonal screen with more than 5 million pixels that NTT Corp.
will incorporate into a monitor by year's end for such applications as
medical imaging and museum archiving.

Sometimes that 250 or 300 watt power supply just doesn't cut it
anymore. Multiple hard disks, CDRW, CDROM, and DVD drives,

Q: What's SuSE's position with helping open-source programming efforts, in particular
the XFree86 project for a Linux graphical user interface?

Unfortunately, they didn't say much about the UltraSPARC-III, though they
did seem to say it will start shipping at 750 and 900MHz. They say it'll
ship this quarter (though that's what they said 3 months ago). Only
explanation I've seen given is that it's yielding better than expected,
and they've re-designed the motherboards to be able to handle the higher
speeds/power consumption. news.com said to expect US3 systems in October
(which is Q4), but Sun themselves aren't giving any specific hints
(as usual). They did say that they have samples of the die-shrunk
copper-interconnect US3. They did also say that there will be new US2
chips, but gave no other info.
