Een lezer van Ace's Hardware heeft ontdekt dat het installeren van de '3dfx Voodoo Series'-driver op een Voodoo5 een flinke performance-winst tot gevolg heeft. De oorzaak is waarschijnlijk het gebruik van 3DNow! optimalisaties:

When we first tested the Voodoo5 for our preview, I installed the Voodoo 5 on a new harddisk, and the card got identified as "Voodoo 5500" in the Control panel. Now I have reinstalled the Voodoo 5 drivers, and guess what? "Voodoo series" appears in the control panel, and the Voodoo 5 seems to have, all of sudden, 3Dnow! optimisations. VR-Zone heeft een mooi tabelletje neergezet met een roadmap voor het DRAM-geheugen. DDR DRAM kunnen we waarschijnlijk dit jaar nog verwachten, net zoals Short Channel RDRAM. (hopelijk voor de fabrikanten met meer succes dan het huidige RDRAM)

In 2001 en 2002 zal er doorgegaan worden met RDRAM, wat uiteindelijk op de dubbele kloksnelheid van het huidige RDRAM zal komen te draaien. DDR DRAM gaat verder tot in 2003, wanneer het met 600 MHz op de piek dezelfde bandbreedte weet te behalen als QRSL-RDRAM. Wat daarna volgt is nog een raadsel.

ZDNet meldt dat Apple bekend heeft gemaakt dat er geen Radeon 256 videokaarten in de PowerMacs gebruikt zullen worden. Apple heeft deze maatregelen genomen nadat via ATi informatie was uitgelekt over de Macworld produktaankondigingen van Apple. Voor ATi komt de hele affaire op een zeer slecht moment, omdat er sterke geruchten gaan dat nVidia de nieuwe graphics supplier van Apple wordt:

The incident began Monday when ATI, which supplies graphics cards for all Apple's current models, issued a four-paragraph news release that stated its Radeon processor would be featured in three new Mac models -- none of which were announced by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) until CEO Steve Jobs' Wednesday morning keynote address.

[...] Sources said Apple executives -- including Jobs -- were livid over the incident. "Steve was beside himself," said one executive close to the issue who asked not to be named. "Steve has been so careful to hide any details -- even the smallest of details such as the number of new products to be announced -- something like this really can ruin things."

[...] Market analysts recently quoted by Bloomberg News speculated ATI could lose some of its Mac business to Nvidia, prompting ATI to issue a July 11 press release stating that "its longstanding business relationship with Apple Computer Inc. remains strong and is a core aspect of ATI's business."

Jasin Robertson van Ace's Hardware heeft een review van de AMD K6-2+ gemaakt. Hij kijkt onder andere of je beter een Duron of een K6-2+ kunt kopen. In de benchmarks is de K6-2+ niet veel sneller dan de K6-2, een upgrade levert weinig extra performance op. Wel is de processor wel stukken goedkoper in de aanschaf dan de Duron, waardoor het een goede concurrent van de Duron en de Celeron II zal zijn:

Well, I guess that just about sums it up. Is the K6-2+ everything that Socket-7 users hoped for? At $79.00, the K6-2+ can't be beat. This CPU has just about everything a budget user could ask for, low cost, Overclockability, high performance and compatibility. If you are in the market for a new budget gaming rig and want to start from scratch, get a Duron or a Celeron-2. If you own a Socket-7/SS7 and have anything short of a K6-III then the K6-2+ is your best budget upgrade option.

The 3dfx Voodoo 4 & 5 represent the latest graphics cards from 3dfx. Although they are already very fast, particularly when FSAA is enabled (in comparison to other cards capable of it that is) you can still do quite a few things to improve performance &/or image quality.

It should be noted that using the latest Voodoo3 drivers (leaked at the moment) much of this guide can be applied to a Voodoo 3 as well, due to the integration of much of the options available in the Voodoo 4/5 tools.

Bij Yahoo Finance staat een press release over het feit dat de fusie tussen 3dfx en GigaPixel is afgerond. Door deze deal kunnen de twee weer leuke nieuwe 3D technologiën voor gamers ontwikkelen :

AMD is goed op schema wat betreft haar 64-bit Sledgehammer processor en heeft inmiddels al samples gedropt bij de grote PC dealers. Het eerste silicon van de CPU wordt begin volgende maand verwacht. Zoals bekend gaat het met Intel's Itanium minder goed waardoor zijn release onlangs weer is uitgesteld. Volgens The Register gaan nu vage geruchten de ronde dat Intel daarom een alternatief 64-bits platform voorbereidt mocht AMD ze nog verder in de problemen brengen. Hieronder wat gedeeltes:

AMD's 64-bit processor, which maybe should be codenamed Iceberg if Intel's chip does turn out to be the Itanic, will not require massive operating system and application software porting exercises.

According to rumours, and we stress there is no hard evidence for this as yet, within the community of chip architects in Silicon Valley last week, Intel is readying an alternative 64-bit platform in case it is forced by circumstances to follow AMD's strategy.

That work may be carried out by the group of Intel architects in Oregon who worked on the Willamette platform. As we have reported here previously, there is little love lost between that team and the Santa Clara based team which developed the Merced-Itanium platform.

The Jester bracht ons een link naar dit bericht van F&L waarin wat meer info is te vinden over de Creative D.A.P Jukebox, een portable MP3 speler die in plaats van het dure flash geheugen gebruik maakt van een ingebouwde harddisk van 6GB, goed voor zo'n 2000 MP3'tjes. In de herfst van dit jaar kun je hem voor Fl 1.400,- komen afhalen:

Creative komt met een mp3-speler die een geïntegreerde 6 GB harde schijf en 8 MB DRAM-buffer heeft. Het apparaat dat onder de naam Creative D.A.P Jukebox te verkrijgen zal zijn, moet de grootte van een draagbare cd-speler krijgen en de nummers via de USB-poort binnenkrijgen. De 400 gram zware speler kan ca 150 cd-albums of 2000 nummers opslaan. Met behulp van de ID3-tag kunnen cd liedjes gesorteerd worden op album of muziekrichting. De Jukebox moet rond de 1400 gulden gaan kosten en in de herfst op de markt komen. Iedere koper krijgt een kortingsbon voor een multifunctionele infraroodbediening, die eind 2000 beschikbaar moet zijn.

Volgens Creative is de toekomst van de speler veiliggesteld, doordat het naast bestaande audioformaten als mp3 en wav ook de nieuwe audioformaten kan lezen (zoals bijvoorbeeld wma en aac). De ondersteuning van meerdere codecs maakt ook de aanpassing aan toekomstige niet-kopieerbare audiotechnieken als Digital Rights Management (DRM) en Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI 2.0) mogelijk.

De UMTS-veiling is afgelopen nadat Versatel af moest haken. De opbrengst ligt voor zover bekend op 5,9 miljard gulden. Ruimschoots minder dan de 20 miljard die eerst genoemd werd maar ongeveer conform de ramingen van de meeste deskundigen.
De 2 grote kavels gaan zoals verwacht naar KPN en Libertel, de 3 drie kleinere naar Ben, Dutchtone en Telfort.

De veiling in Scheveningen van etherfrequenties voor de nieuwste soort mobiele telefonie is afgelopen na het afhaken van Versatel. De opbrengst van de veiling is nog onbekend. Vrijdag, op de twaalfde dag, stond de teller nog op ruim 5 miljard gulden.

Minister Zalm sprak voorafgaand aan de veiling van een bedrag aan inkomsten voor de staat van zo'n 20 miljard.

Staatssecretaris de Vries geeft later vandaag een toelichting op de veiling en verdeling van de vijf frequentiekavels. Met UMTS-frequenties kunnen mobiele bellers onder meer internet ontvangen, compleet met beeld en geluid.

Sander Sassen heeft een artikel geschreven over Online PR / Marketing taktieken van fabrikanten, in andere woorden het hele gedoe omtrent het verstrekken van samples naar websites waarna zij een review o.i.d. erover publiceren. De fabrikant in kwestie wil uiteraard graag een positief verhaal zien terwijl het voor de website belangrijk is om objectief te blijven. Erg interessant om eens te lezen, zeker als je zelf ook een site runt:

To summarize, online PR is the art of getting free exposure in the online community, making sure that the company’s products are given good marks, proper reviews and above all getting mentioned in a positive way in as many online publications as possible. Patrick Schmid van Toms Hardware Guide heeft een korte review van de Western Digital 450AA een 5400 RPM harddisk geschreven. Uit de review blijkt dat, zoals eerder al werd gemeld, Western Digital zich meer op de budgetmarkt gaat richten. De 450AA presteert niet geweldig, maar is met de lage prijs (200 dollar) interessant voor de low-budget markt:

Looking at pricewatch.com, you can find this WD drive for less than $200. That's a really good price for a good hard drive. Western Digital is not offering absolute high end capacity drives for some time now. Here, Maxtor and IBM are outplaying each other (80 and 75 GBytes). WD rather tries to offer products with the best price/performance ratio. If you just need a rather large hard drive without having special demands, you will get a timely model which is easy to handle.

With a net price of approximately 0.4 cents per megabyte, the 450AA is able to position itself at the very price/performance top. In comparison to other 5,400-drives, its performance is also at a very good level. Additionally, you won't get heat or vibration problems.

Net als Thresh's Vuurpeleton heeft ook AnandTech een review klaar van de MSI K7T Pro KT133 plaat met 1xAGP, 6xPCI, 1xCNR en 3xDIMM. Zoals we gewend zijn van Microstar is ook dit model vrij compleet en valt er weinig te klagen over zijn prestaties. Overklokkers zullen het ontbreken van de multiplier dipswitches echter niet waarderen:

Compared to the only other widely available Socket-A options, the Gigabyte GA-7ZM and FIC AZ-11, the K7T Pro offers more expansion and more tweaking/overclocking options. It's certainly a solid choice for building your new Athlon or Duron system. However, overclockers will probably still want to wait for the ASUS A7V or ABIT KT7 and their supposed support for unlocking the multiplier of AMD Socket-A processors. Our recommendation is still to wait until the first wave of Socket-A boards have arrived and we can see exactly which one is best. Of course, that may not be the easiest thing to do with AMD's latest CPU's tempting you to upgrade.
