TweakMax heeft een review online geknikkerd van de Logitech Mouseman Wheel Optical. Het voordeel van optische muizen mag duidelijk zijn: geen balletje, geen stof erin, geen slijtage. Deze muis heeft hetzelfde design als de Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel (lees onze review daarvan hier), maar i.p.v. een zilver tintje een blauw hoesje. De kwaliteit van de muis bleek heel goed te zijn, en volgens de reviewer beter dan de optische MS Intellimouse Explorer.

When Microsoft first came out with the optical Intellimouse Explorer, I was not late to test it out. However, I wasn't too impressed. I found the overall quality pretty poor. The buttons felt a little loose, and the cover felt too weak. On Logitech's MouseMan Wheel series however, the quality is top notch! It feels very tight and robust when holding it. The buttons sit tight as well, without 'moving' when you have your fingers on them. The sides are covered with some kind of rubber, (soft-touch) which is very comfortable and makes for a good grip. As on the original Wheel mouse, this one has four programmable buttons as well. In my opinion, this blue mouse doesn't look as cool as the silver cordless version. However, the optical version has an additional cool logo with a light. Not useful, but it definitely looks cool, especially if you are located in a dark place.

Een hacker die zichzelf 'Pimpshiz' noemt heeft recent verschillende sites gedefaced, waaronder die van de Franse Nationale Bibliotheek, Honda UK en NASA. Hij wil zo zijn ontevredenheid laten blijken over het verbod van Napster.

Pimpshiz zegt dat hij een tot nu toe onontdekte, maar zeer duidelijke bug in Windows NT heeft gevonden waarmee hij toegang kan krijgen tot de sites. De webmasters krijgen allemaal een emailadres van hem, zodat ze kunnen horen hoe de hack is gedaan.

Pimpshiz denkt zelf dat hij goed werk doet:

"I don't like what [Metallica] are doing to Napster," he emailed ZDNet. "I am doing this to get what I think is the right thing... out to more people. Maybe others who don't even use Napster (such as myself) will even realize what is going wrong here."

Zeker handig om dit even door te lezen als je een Socket A processor + koeler hebt aangeschaft. Het blijkt bij sommige modellen (bijv. Golden Orb) nogal eenvoudig te zijn de koeler verkeerd te plaatsen, waardoor er slecht of helemaal geen contact is met de core. Gevolg: een doorgebrande processor (zoals een bezoeker van de Tweakers.net chatbox tot zijn spijt moest ondervinden)

Both square "socket" type processors and cartridge-encased "slot" type ones are meant to be no trouble to install. People are nervous about it for no reason. It's not like changing your own oil, it's more like just changing your own windscreen wipers. Right?

Well, usually, yes. But a few recent developments have conspired to make many people's processor installation experience exactly the sort of hardware-destroying nightmare that timid people who get someone else to do all of this stuff for them are trying to avoid.When you've got a cooler that works properly with your CPU, socket CPU installation really is easy. When you've got a cooler that doesn't fit properly, because it's not made for Socket A or because it's been designed by beetle-browed knuckle-draggers (I'm extrapolating, here, but this is a parsimonious explanation for some of the coolers I've seen), then you may find yourself converting your expensive new CPU back into its native sand, and scare yourself off doing your own upgrades forever.

Over bij Computer!Totaal hebben ze een interessante review klaar van de Creative Digital Audio Player Jukebox draagbare MP3 speler met een ingebouwde harde schijf van 6GB . Het apparaat is ongeveer even groot als een discman en beschikt over een eigen besturingssysteem die op het begin even tijd in beslag neemt om op te starten. Het grote LCD scherm geeft je verder informatie over de MP3 (ID3-Tag). De geluidskwaliteit werd ook goed bevonden, dit mede dankzij door de goede koptelefoon en EAX-ondersteuning. Nou ja het grootste struikelbrok van de Jukebox is eigenlijk de prijs, die ligt met Fl 1390,- gulden erg hoog. Wellicht valt het relatief gezien t.o.v. een 64MB flash player van 650 piek wel mee, maar om nu dagelijks met een geluidsdrager van bijna 1400 pieken in je jasje rond te huppelen lijkt me best, uhh, apart... Hieronder wat gedeeltes uit de test, klik hier voor het complete verhaal!

Draagbare MP3-spelers hebben altijd al een hoog 'hebbeding'-gehalte gehad. Het enige wat het massaal vervangen van de draagbare cd-speler in de weg stond was de beperkte opslag. Op bijna alle MP3-spelers past niet meer dan een half uur tot een uur muziek. Wilt u meer, dan mag u veel geld betalen voor extra geheugen. Aan dit probleem heeft Creatieve een eind gemaakt. De Digital Audio Player Jukebox heeft een opslagcapaciteit van maar liefst honderd uur.

Deze hoge opslagcapaciteit komt doordat het apparaat over een 6 GB harde schijf beschikt. Om de behuizing zo klein mogelijk te houden is gekozen voor een 2,5 inch model dat ook in notebooks wordt gebruikt. Gevolg is dat het apparaat veel meer stroom verbruikt dan andere MP3-spelers, daarom zijn vier oplaadbare batterijen nodig van elk 1800 mAh.

Samen met de harde schijf zorgt dit voor een beduidend grotere omvang en gewicht dan dat we tot nu toe van MP3-spelers zijn gewend. Het formaat van de Jukebox is ongeveer gelijk aan die van een draagbare cd-speler, maar hij is wel wat zwaarder.

[...] De Jukebox wordt geleverd met twee setjes oplaadbare batterijen. Die kunnen in het apparaat worden opgeladen met de meegeleverde netadapter. Hiermee komt de 'actieradius' op ongeveer 8-9 uur. Ook kunnen er gewone penlights worden gebruikt, maar die mogen onder geen beding in combinatie met de netadapter worden gebruikt.

Naast de batterijen en de netadapter zit er bij de Jukebox ook nog een draagtas, koptelefoon, usb-kabel en software. De software heet Playcenter 2 en is een opgeleukte versie van een bestandsbeheerprogramma.

Ook kunnen er audio-cd's mee worden omgezet tot WAV- of MP3-bestanden en WAV-bestanden omgezet tot MP3-bestanden. Er is prima mee te werken, maar ik heb liever een wat soberder en overzichtelijker vormgegeven programma. Op dit moment kunnen er alleen MP3- en WAV-bestanden op de Jukebox worden gezet. Binnenkort moet daar ondersteuning voor WMA en AAC bijkomen, inclusief MAC-software.

Zijn de programmeurs van downloadhulp Go!zilla het verkeerde pad in geslagen? De site van concurrent GetRight meldt dat Go!zilla zonder dit te melden de Click-monitor van GetRight uitschakelt en zelfs de snelkoppeling uit het startmenu haalt! Erg brutaal. Uiteraard is er een manier om GetRight weer werkend te krijgen, maar waarschijnlijk hebben de makers van GetRight liever dat je Go!zilla verwijderd:

If GetRight's monitoring is turned on when Go!Zilla 3.9 is started, Go!Zilla does the following:

• Turns off GetRight's click monitoring settings.
• Turns its own click monitoring settings on...even if you'd turned them off earlier.
• And Deletes GetRight's shortcut from your StartUp Group!
• No message or confirmation is given by Go!Zilla about any of these changes to your settings. Yes, really. It deletes shortcuts for another program and doesn't even tell you.

To Fix:

• If you start Go!Zilla 3.9, you must then follow the steps below for Turning GetRight Back On. (We're working so GetRight will better detect and fix itself; but for now, every time after Go!Zilla is started, you must do the Turning GetRight Back On steps.)
• You must also copy the GetRight Tray Icon back into your StartUp group.
  • Right click the Windows "Start" button, then pick "Open"
  • In the Explorer window, pick "Programs", then "GetRight".
  • Select the "GetRight Tray Icon" item there, then pick the Edit->Copy menu item.
  • Again Right click the Windows "Start" button
  • In the Explorer window, pick "Programs", then "StartUp".
  • Pick the Edit->Paste menu item.
  • So it won't get deleted in the future, you may want to rename the new "GetRight Tray Icon" to be something different, like "Start GetRight".

Uninstalling:

• Go!Zilla uninstalls the same as most programs, from the Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.
• Look for "Go!Zilla".

Dat computers tegenwoordig bijna overal voor gebruikt worden is ons wel bekend. In Engeland hebben ze echter nu weer wat nieuws bedacht: een computer die rechters helpt met het bepalen van de celstraf voor een crimineel. Aan de hand van 'risicopunten' wordt de hoogte van de gevangenisstraf vastgesteld, gebaseerd op een aantal zaken. Of dit een goede ontwikkeling is, valt natuurlijk te betwijfelen:

Een computerprogramma genaamd Oasys moet jaarlijks aan meer dan 200.000 misdadigers zogenoemde risicopunten geven. Deze punten geven aan hoeveel gevaar zij vormen voor de samenleving en hoe groot de kans is dat zij opnieuw een overtreding begaan.

De scores zijn gebaseerd zijn op zaken als familieachtergrond, opleiding, eerdere overtredingen en de houding van de verdachte. De uitslagen van het computerprogramma zullen onder meer worden gebruikt bij het vaststellen van de straf. Met behulp van het programma zou ook een nationaal databestand voor misdadigers kunnen worden opgebouwd.

Volgens burgerrechtenorganisaties krijgen advocaten straks veel moeite met het aanvechten van de computergegevens in de rechtszaal. Bovendien wijzen advocaten erop dat verdachten dreigen te worden veroordeeld op grond van wat ze mogelijk gaan doen in plaats van hun eigenlijke misdrijf.

Na lang wachten is de opvolger van Linux kernel 2.2 nu eindelijk bijna klaar. Volgens WebWereld zal de nieuwe basis voor het besturingssysteem in de herfst beschikbaar zijn, nadat het dan zo'n 4 maanden in de beta-fase is geweest. Kernel 2.4 is volgens Linux-chef Torvalds een stuk beter dan 2.2, maar hij ziet toch nog wel in dat de consument niet meteen over zal stappen van Windows naar Linux:

De opvolger van de huidige 2.2 Linux-kernel is in aantocht. Volgens Linus Torvalds is versie 2.4 een heel stuk beter.

De grondlegger van het steeds populairder wordende open source besturingssysteem zei dit in een vraaggesprek met The Wall Street Journal. De nieuwe kernel – de kern van het OS – heeft enige maanden vertraging opgelopen, maar is nu dan eindelijk bijna klaar. Het zal de eerste nieuwe kernel sinds anderhalf jaar zijn.

Volgens Torvalds presteert 2.4 behoorlijk goed in vergelijking met andere Unix-varianten en met Windows. "Het is geen pretje om terug te keren naar de 2.2 kernel", aldus de 30-jarige Fin. Linux mag dan steeds beter en gebruiksvriendelijker worden, dit betekent volgens Torvalds niet dat de consument nu massaal Windows zal inruilen voor Linux. Dat zal nog wel vijf à tien jaar duren, denkt de Transmeta-werknemer. Het grote voordeel van Windows boven Linux is namelijk nog steeds dat er veel meer software voor beschikbaar is, vindt ook Torvalds.

Many have heard about the other "tapeout" that occurred this summer, but it is nothing to get really excited about. The VSA-200 should be released shortly, but again it is not the performance part many were expecting. Instead this is simply a shrunk version of the VSA-100, but it has the 64 bit memory bus for the value market. It is unknown how this performs, or what speeds it will run at. Currently it is simply a low-power, budget graphics chip that may be able to utilize DDR SDRAM. Do not expect to see this product in retail, as it is squarely aimed at the OEM market. I was also disappointed with this, as I wanted the VSA-200 to be a high performance part with DDR support at a full 128 bits (eg. 200 Mhz V5 5500's with 200 Mhz SDR SDRAM and no external power connector nor active cooling). This will also give the ability to process 1 quad textured pixel per clock. Speed was always a goal with this chip, and here is where the 2+ years and half the R&D money have gone. While the VSA-100 will run at 166 on a .25E process, the Rampage will be able to run significantly faster (200 to 250 Mhz range) due to speed optimizations in the design and a likely die process shrink to .18 micron.

[...] The texturing features of Rampage are nothing less than impressive. 3dfx calls the texture unit the "Texture Computer" which will actually have a good deal of programmability to it. Rampage can do 8 layer texturing (in 2 clocks thanks to "loopback"), but due to the multi-sample nature of the chip, it possibly can do a four textured pixel with four subsamples in one clock, or an eight layered pixel with four subsamples in two clocks. This "Texture Computer" is quite flexible and will be able to do a lot of interesting tricks. Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft het derde deel gepubliceerd van hun 150MHz busspeed projecten. In de eerst twee delen werd de performance van de BX chipset bekeken op 150MHz, in deel drie is het slachtoffer de i815 chipset. Wat mooi te zien is bij de benchmark resultaten is dat niet alleen videokaarten een geheugen bottleneck hebben: bij 3D applicaties is een Pentium III 975 met een 150MHz FSB sneller dan de 1GHz variant met een 133MHz FSB:

Running your system at 150 MHz FSB has now proven to be an easy way to increase performance without the necessity to do without important components. 37 MHz PCI clock have never been a big problem to the majority of PCI cards out there. However, don't forget that overclocking always bares the risk of data loss or component failure.

The 815 chipset at 150 MHz FSB will only require good memory (PC133 CL2 will do fine) and a good motherboard. Our Solano motherboard round up is under way, so you will get a detailed review within the next days.

The performance difference between the BX and the 815 is certainly not worth a discussion about what to buy. If the amount of sold 815 motherboards keeps increasing, the prices will hopefully come down, making BX boards with on-board ATA66 or ATA100 controllers the less attractive option.

yam'ha laat ons weten dat Sharky Extreme een review online heeft gezet van de Gigabyte 7ZX, da's een Socket A KT133 moederbord met 5xPCI, 1xAGP, 1xISA, 1xAMR en 3xDIMM. De 7ZX bleek met zijn 105MHz FSB niet echt een overklokwonder maar het goede design en handige features als DualBIOS maken dat gedeeltelijk weer goed:

Overall, the layout of the 7ZX is very easy to work with. Gigabyte has placed the ATX power connector adjacent to the DIMM slots, keeping the "cable mess" associated with many ASUS motherboards to a minimum. IDE/Floppy connectors are stacked, further eliminating twisted cables and scraped knuckles, and after dealing with several motherboards in the past couple of weeks, the 7ZX is perhaps the "neatest" board I've dealt with.

..the 7ZX has more room around the Socket A than any other motherboard in the lab. Affixing the proper heatsink/fan or even peltier combination should be no problem whatsoever.

Although we would like the 7ZX to support some form of front side bus manipulation within the BIOS, we did recently discover Gigabyte's newest software addition, EasyTune III that operates from within Windows. Featuring incremental FSB jumps of 1MHz in most cases, it shouldn't be hard to land the optimal frequency for your Socket A processor.

Due to the poor BIOS controls, we didn't initially feel there would be much overclocking overhead. Upon discovering EasyTune III, however, our outlook brightened, and we tried for something a bit more ambitious than the 735MHz (7x105MHz) setting that we achieved with the DIP switches.
The onboard switches offer the following front side bus frequencies: 95/100/105/110/113/115/117/133. We had hoped that using EasyTune would allow operation between 105 and 110MHz, but anything over the 735MHz setting would crash just as hard as if we had set the FSB via DIP switch.

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows heeft een uitgebreide preview gepost van beta 1 van Microsoft Office 10. And a new speech recognition feature, first revealed in WinInfo, allows users to speak the names of toolbar buttons, menus, and menu items in Office. Office corrects some of the major shortcomings of Office 2000, which is appreciated. A new AutoCorrect Options button helps the user control whether certain automatic spelling corrections, such as the " " smiley face conversion, occur automatically while typing. When a user deletes corrected text and re-types the original text, for example, AutoCorrect will learn to not make that correction again. A new Paste Options button lets the user determine how items are copied and pasted into Office documents. And the annoying Office Clipboard feature from Office 2000 has been enhanced to hold 24 items and features a preview mode and a tray icon so that the feature can be used from non-Office applications. And best of all, the horrible little Office Assistant will not appear by default in Office 10; instead, it appears only when the user asks for help or when specific help information becomes available for the user. An "Ask A Question" box now appears in the toolbar of every Office application instead.

edwtie schrijft dat Hollywood grandioos heeft gewonnen in de zaak Hollywood vs. 2600.com over DeCCS. DeCCS is een programma wat het mogelijk maakt om illegaal DVD's te kopiëren. Aangezien het programma volgens rechter Lewis Kaplan de Digital Millennium Copyright Act overtreedt moet de software verwijderd worden samen met links naar de software. Hoewel de hollywoodstudio's de wet aan hun kant hebben zal het waarschijnlijk weinig invloed hebben op het aantal illegale DVD's: 2600.com is echt niet de enige site met DeCCS :

De beheerders van de populaire site 2600.com moeten het programmaatje DeCSS en alle links hiernaar verwijderen.

Dit heeft rechter Lewis Kaplan donderdag beslist in de zaak die door acht grote filmstudio's was aangespannen. Zij krijgen hiermee hun zin. DeCSS wordt gebruikt voor het kraken van de beveiliging van videodiscs en overtreedt daarmee de Digital Millennium Copyright Act, zo verklaarde de rechter. 2600.com gaat in hoger beroep.

De uitspraak wordt gevierd door de Hollywoodstudio's. Een verbod op de verspreiding van DeCSS was precies wat ze wilden. De uitspraak van Kaplan mag dan juridisch grote implicaties hebben, kenners betwijfelen of het praktische effect wel zo groot is. DeCSS was immers niet alleen op 2600.com te vinden, maar op veel meer plekken op het web.

freezerburn schrijft dat Tech Extreme meldt dat Transmeta begonnen is met de levering van de TM5600 processor. De TM5600 is de opvolger van de TM5400 en heeft een dubbele hoeveelheid cache aan boord en moet daarmee 10% sneller worden. Als je dit vertaald naar Intel snelheid komt de 700MHz variant ongeveer overeen met een Pentium III 550, afhankelijk hoe efficient de code morphing software werkt. De TM5600 zal onder andere gebuikt worden in Sony's VAIO notebook:

The microchip manufacturer, Transmeta, has recently announced that they will begin shipping the TM560 - a lavish next generation product of the Crusoe chip. The TM5600’s architecture is the same as the previous versions of the Crusoe, but has several improvements. Offering a total of 512KB L2 cache, the TM5600 has twice as much cache as its predecessor, the TM5400. In addition to this, the 5600 will be manufactured on a .18 micron process, compared to the previous plans for a .22 micron process.

Transmeta is planning on offering the TM5600 at three clock speeds; 500, 600 and 700 MHz. They also plan to ship the chip to Sony for use in the next VAIO sub-notebook.

When I attended PC Expo last June, I saw Transmeta’s TM5400 in action. Their booth was setup with several IBM notebooks, powered by the 5400. With the new revision of the Crusoe chip, Transmeta is planning on making a 10% performance increase over the previous models. I also spoke with several representatives from Transmeta and verified that the TM5600 has full support for SDR and DDR memory. I’m sure this will be welcomed with open arms by the industry.

Er komen wel Microsoft applicaties naar het Linux platform, in een press release laat Mainsoft namelijk weten dat ze bezig zijn met het porten van verschillende internet applicaties (o.a Internet Explorer) naar het Linux platform. Dit gebeurt alles met de toestemming van Microsoft, ze hebben namelijk een contract en de volledige windows source code. Er wordt echter met geen woord gerept over office, wat dus de uitspraak van Microsoft op BetaNews onderbouwt:

The Register meldt dat Asus deze maand in de plaats van de eerder verwachte 1,2 miljoen moederplankjes slechts 1 miljoen exemplaren zal verkopen. De schuld van dit tegenvallende resultaat ligt volgens Asus bij Intel, die niet in staat zou zijn om voldoende chipsets te leveren:

Asustek is to sell 200,000 mobos fewer this month than it had originally anticipated - and it blames lack of Intel chip supplies for much of the shortfall. The Taiwanese company, a key supplier for the OEM market, had expected to sell 1.2 million mobos this month, but now thinks it will sell only one million units. Asustek also notes softer demand for its notebooks from major PC OEMs, upon which it relies for much of its turnover. Motherboards account for 60 per cent of revenue, and notebooks about 25 per cent.

Anand heeft besloten de verwarring (die hij zelf veroorzaakt heeft) wat te verkleinen en heeft aan nVidia gevraagd wat nu de releasedate van de NV20 is. AnandTech veroorzaakte wat onduidelijkheid nadat zij zeiden dat de NV20 was uitgesteld tot voorjaar 2001, waarop anderen weer protesteerden dat dit niet zo was, etc. Het was in principe logisch te veronderstellen dat de NV20 was uitgesteld, aangezien nVidia de GeForce2 Ultra ineens tussendoor gereleased heeft.

Het antwoord dat Anand rechtstreeks van nVidia kreeg luidt: 4 tot 8 maanden nadat de GeForce2 Ultra gereleased is. Volgens Anand klopte zijn bewering dan ook:

De mannetjes van HardwareZone hebben een review in elkaar gedraaid van de Diamond Rio 600, S3's nieuwste MP3 speeltje. De Rio 600 heeft een stuk aantrekkelijker design dan zijn voorganger, en bovendien zijn de covers te vervangen (à la Nokia). Over de bruikbaarheid van het apparaatje was men redelijk te spreken:

The controls and menu on the Rio 600 is also simplified. Playback controls are laid out in a 4 directional joy pad manner while the centre button activates the backlight. As with the previous Rio, the backlighting employs the organic blue EL light common to the Casio and Timex digital watches. Most of the functionality remained pretty much the same as the Rio 500. News.com meldt dat Sony de Walkman merknaam doet herrijzen als portable MP3 speler. Later dit jaar wordt deze nieuwe lijn MP3 Walkmans met een massaal advertentie offensief in de markt geplant. De spelers maken uiteraard gebruik van Sony's compacte Memory Stick storage medium. Ook interessant is de MC Walkman, een minidisk spelertje dat tevens MP3'tjes af weet te draaien. Verder werkt Sony aan spelers die via de draadloze Bluetooth standaard met soortgenoten kunnen babbelen:

3D Rage heeft een review gebakken van de CardCooler XT, opvolger van de CardCooler. De CardCooler XT is een stukje metaal waar twee monsterlijke 120mm fans op gemonteerd zitten. Hiermee creëer je een luchtstroom die je moederbord, insteekkaarten en zelfs de processor bereikt. Ook de prijs en geluidsproductie waren volgens de reviewer erg oké, het enige nadeel is de grootte: niet iedere kast heeft genoeg ruimte voor dit monster:

Again the picture is the whole story. Performance with decent noise, good power rating and an easy install never come cheap. The price of the XT is 34.00. Now that's a roast beef sandwich and a large Pepsi here in the NYC area, but that is a fair investment for some. A point to remember is that the Unit is durable and will swap from systems as you upgrade. (Unless you buy a I-Mac) The XT has a warranty period that is lifetime, so the Card Cooler company backs it up. Overall we feel that its a good value and offers great performance.

Vortex of Sound heeft nieuwe info los weten te peuteren over de vorderingen bij de verkoop van het failliete Aureal. Het hoogste bod blijkt inmiddels bij Creative Labs te liggen en 3dfx heeft door wat bureaucratisch gezeik geen bod uit mogen brengen. Vortex of Sound weet tevens te melden dat er ondanks het faillisement binnenkort waarschijnlijk toch een nieuw WDM driver update voor de Vortex kaarten wordt uitgebracht:

When it rains, it pours. We're privy to more updates on Aureal, but please note that these came from an outside source familiar with the situation; while the source is trusted, we have not been able to verify the accuracy of these with anyone else at this time.

• 3dfx was not allowed to bid for the company after all due a procedural problem, possibly because they did not submit a qualifying bid in time.
• Guillemot and Creative got into a bidding war with the bids going from $8 million to $12 million from Guillemot, and from $11 million to $16 million, all the way up to $21 million from Creative.
• Since the Guillemot bid was not high enough, their deal does not provide any revenue for any of the unsecured creditors, so the creditor committee would not accept their bid.
• The Creative bid provides some money for the unsecured creditors but would require Aureal to withdraw its lawsuit against Creative. Oaktree, the secured creditor (and main investor), is against selling the lawsuit, so this offer was unacceptable to them. Since the pending litigation "asset" is not up for sale, the bankruptcy court cannot compel the company to sell to Creative.
• Guillemot placed a 5 day deadline on their latest offer and went away to see if they could improve the offer to bring it more in line with Creatives. They might return to court before the end of the month to adjust their offer.
• Creative, acting as the white knight, has placed a 30 day deadline on their highest offer, and has also said that they would match the Guillemot offer (same price for the same limited assets) if a deal with Guillemot could not be consummated within the Guillemot 5 day limit.

Het faillisement van het financieel minder draagkrachtige Aureal was overigens grotendeels het gevolg van de rechtszaken die zij door door Creative aan het broekje gelapt kregen. Nu heeft Creative Aureal op de knieën gekregen en staat men op het punt om de toko over te nemen. Een overname door Guillemot of een andere partij dan Creative zou de concurrentie in deze door Creative gedomineerde markt in ieder geval wel goed doen.

GaMeOvEr schrijft dat er bij Tom's Hardware Guide een review is neergemikt van de in mooi zwart uitgevoerde AOpen AX6BC Pro II Millennium Edition. Dit plankje is gebaseerd op de BX chipset en heeft 6xPCI, 1xAGP, 0xISA en 3xDIMM aan boord. Naast zijn strakke kleur wist-ie verder in de meeste benchmarks bovenaan te eindigen en geen moeite te ondervinden met bussnelheden tot 148MHz. Duidelijk een plankje voor de liefhebber :

I could start to summarize the features and test results, but this board deserves something different. There is not much sense in talking about the amount of PCI slots and DIMM sockets or the placement of different components on the PCB.

Originally, I thought that the cool black PCB was all that is to the AX6BX Pro II ME. Fortunately there's quite a lot more to it. AOpen's 'Millennium Edition BX' is one of the fastest BX motherboards ever. Particularly in the SYSmark runs under Windows NT and Quake III Arena it scored the highest results.

I really like AOpen's idea of creating a special kind of hardware, since if gives the product a different feel. One of the factors is AOpen's idea to make the AX6BC Pro II ME a limited edition. The product becomes more valuable without having any feature changed.

Besides little issues like the placement of the FDD connector, I found nothing to complain. And up to 148 MHz the board runs rock-stable and fast. All things considered, AOpen did a good job with their Millennium Edition and I really hope that they will continue releasing high-end limited edition products every once a while.

nV News heeft een interview gehad met Steve Mosher van Creative Labs over de GeForce2 Ultra cq. Annihilator 2 Ultra. Onderwerpen die aan de orde komen in het interview zijn onder andere: release datums, board design, bandbreedte limitaties en natuurlijk waarom Creative beter is dan de concurrentie. Hieronder een stukje over het board design:

nV News: What besides the significantly faster memory does the Ultra offer over standard GeForce2 cards? Were there any board revisions to accommodate the faster memory (traces lengthened or shortened, etc.)?

Steve: The Ultra also has a significantly faster core clock, 250 Mhz which helps in the multitexture cases and helps with T&L. There are significant revisions done to the board to insure signal integrity at these speeds. Basically if you want to insure stability at these speeds you have to redesign the board. There is a huge difference between a board that is overclocked to 250 Mhz versus one that is designed to 250Mhz. If you just try to overclock the board without changing key components and key traces, then you run a big stability risk and you risk having a product that will die in a few days, or be overly sensitive to heat.

Basically, by redesigning the board to handle 250Mhz memory, you also provide the potential for headroom beyond this. The bottom line is there will be NVIDIA approved design for the Ultra board. Designed by the guys who understand the chip and memory and system issues better than anybody else. This design will have the highest performance, most stability, and most margin for overclocking. If you are going to spend $499 on a graphics card, then the thing you have to insure is that you have the board that was designed to go this fast (or faster).

Chris Connolly heeft wederom de 1GHz Athlon Thunderbird eens vergeleken met zijn 1GHz Pentium III concurrent van Intel. Interessant is dat het prijsverschil tussen de twee gigantisch is opgelopen; mede dankzij de recente prijsverlaging van AMD is de Athlon Tbird 1GHz de helft goedkoper dan de P3 @ 1GHz! Aangezien de Athlon ook nauwelijks trager is en vele malen beter verkrijgbaar is wordt de keuze nu wel heel makkelijk...

Let's get this out of the way first, if you're running a system with a 1 GHz processor (Intel or AMD), the bottleneck of your system is going to be the video card. Even the most high-end GeForce2 GTS cards max out around 1024x768x32 or 1280x1024x16, no matter how much processing speed simply won't matter after this point. Hopefully, we'll see next-generation video cards from ATI, 3dfx, and Nvidia shatter these barriers by the end of the year.

AMD's Thunderbird has a LOT going for it, low-cost, unbeatable availability, and speeds up to par and sometimes faster than Intel's 1 GHz. On the other hand, Intel's chips run incredibly cool, and are still the only ones that can run in an SMP configuration, not to mention they can run almost flawlessly in two year old BX boards.

All in all, if you have the giga-urge for one of these chips today, the Thunderbird at 1 GHz is the obvious choice due to it's price/performance ratio. As time goes on and Intel's yields improve, I think Intel's chip will get more and more cost effective and will start to look pretty good. One thing is for sure, we know a 1.1 GHz shootout can't be too far away.

T-Break heeft een korte review online gezet over de Creative WebCam Go Plus.
Naast WebCam kan hij ook gebruikt worden als digitale camera, voor dit doeleinde is hij uitgerust met 8MB aan geheugen. Dit is het dubbele als bij de normale WebCam Go. Daarnaast heeft de Plus versie ook een betere software bundel. Volgens de reviewer is het niet de moeite waard om te upgraden, maar als je een nieuwe WebCam nodig hebt is de Go Plus geen miskoop:

The first thing Creative have done is doubled the amount of memory on the Camera to 8MB– meaning twice as many pictures when you’re on the go. The WebCam Go Plus also adds a built-in digital voice annotation recorder that’ll let you record (funny) captions to all your photos. Audio functions also help with one more thing. Previously when you set a timer on the WebCam Go and ran to the front of the camera to take your picture, you would have no idea of when and if the picture was taken. So you always stood around like an idiot for a few extra seconds in front of the camera (and then when you actually saw your picture on the PC you’d wonder why you always had that confused look). The WebCam Go Plus is smart and it makes some noise when the picture is taken – protecting you from embarrassing moments and pictures- not to forget saving a few seconds of your life as well. Also, on the hardware side, the lens is now an auto-focus one. On the original, you had to set the lens for specific distances, which sometimes turned into a big pain.

A lot of new software has been added to the WebCam Go package out of which, without doubt, the coolest one is the PixMaker Lite which lets you take a series of shots and then transform them into an interactive 360 degree scene. I really can’t describe how cool this software it – the best way would be to see it action at www.pixaround.com Also included is FlipViewer by E-Book Systems for organizing and viewing your digital pictures in a very easy to use environment that looks like an actual photo album. Finally, the Creative WebCam PhotoEditor lets you edit and retouch your photos along with adding special effects and backgrounds to your images.

HardwareCentral heeft een review online gemikt van de Abit Siluro GeForce2 videokaart met 64MB DDR geheugen. De reviewer was vanwege de goede overklokbaarheid erg te spreken over dit kaartje. De core draaide op 230MHz en het geheugen had geen problemen met een kloksnelheid van 400MHz waardoor er flink wat extra performance uitgetweakt kon worden:

As if the performance at the default clockspeed wasn’t good enough, the Siluro GF256 GTS overclocked wonderfully as well, up to a core speed of 230 MHz, and a massive 400 MHz memory clock. Granted, not all boards are guaranteed to overclock to the same degree, but they’re generally not too far apart, either.

Ultimately, our only real concern is availability. As with their original Siluro graphics cards, Abit was a little later to the table than most other manufacturers with the Siluro GF256 GTS, and its biggest challenge now is getting availability up to par.

In summary, the Siluro GF256 GTS is a card to be reckoned with. With 64 MB of highly-overclockable memory, it’s amongst the absolute fastest cards on the market, and has the $350 price to prove it. Further, with standard S-Video output, and a very complete User’s Manual, the Siluro GF256 GTS comes with HardwareCentral’s full recommendation (assuming you can find one).

NeoSeeker brengt ons een review van de GlobalWin FLK50 Slot-A Athlon cooler. De FLK50 is speciaal ontworpen voor de Asus K7M maar schijnt ook gewoon te passen op andere Slot-A borden. De performance van deze slechts $25 dollar kostende cooler bleek zeer goed te zijn, mits je niet boven de 800MHz komt tenminste:

What? Huh? How the..? I can hardly believe it! This little $25 cooler has outperformed every other cooler thus far! I’m still dazed – but how can this be? With only one fan, a lightweight heatsink, and just a regular/standard clamp design? What’s the magic ingredient?

I believe the potion that helped this cooler keep the K7 under 30 degrees all the way to 750 MHZ was the ultra lightweight heatsink in combination with the super speedy fan. There may have been a slight advantage coming from the sink design as well –having those odd gaps in the metal to get air down below! Let’s run over each score. First at 600 MHZ a very respectable and tied thus far for lowest score 25 degrees Celsius. Next at 700 MHZ –just a 1 degree Celsius increase. Then at 735 it went up yet another 1 degree Celsius, and finally at 750 MHZ it almost popped up to 30 degrees –but not quite, revealing a very nice 29-degree Celsius score.

It isn't hard to understand why I am a big fan of the Force RS. The good feature so far out weigh the bad that the wheel ends up standing out from it's competitors quite well.

The fantastic design of this wheel, the strong base, the excellent grip, the powerful forces and everything else all thrown together into one great racing solution have made this wheel an exceptional product. With it's few flaws, the wheel definitely could use some improvement, but it is still an excellent choice for the racing enthusiast. With a price-tag that isn't going to make you go broke, the Force RS looks very appealing.

Because of it's flaws, the wheel is definitely not perfect. Therefore, we cannot give it a perfect score. If these flaws are ever addressed and a new version of the wheel comes out, you can be sure that we will do our best to get our hands on it and review it for you.

Bij iXBT Hardware kun je een review vinden van de Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E moederbord gebaseerd op de i815E chipset, vooralsnog een goede opvolger van de hoogbejaarde BX. Het bordje heeft een vrij relaxte layout met als belangrijkste feature een 4e DIMM slot, alhoewel je met de i815E nooit meer dan 512MB RAM kunt gebruiken. Overclocking gebeurt via het bijgeleverde Windows proggie Easy Tune III, daarmee kun je een keuze maken uit 13 bussnelheden boven 100Mhz met een maximum van 153MHz. Helaas kon de GA-6OXM7E er niet echt geweldig mee overweg aangezien 130MHz FSB het maximaal haalbare was, duidelijk minder dan de 160MHz die iXBT met dezelfde processor op andere i815 borden behaalde. Al met al een aardig bordje voor de gemiddelde PC'er die niet van plan is om te gaan tweaken maar gewoon een super stabiel plankje voor z'n P3 wil hebben:

And now a bit of practical stuff. In order to test the mainboard's overclocking potential we took Intel Pentium III 600 with a new cB0 core stepping, which we managed to overclock up to 960MHz (160MHz FSB) on other i815 based mainboards. Having applied Easy Tune III utility in easy mode the CPU core frequency rose up to 681MHz (112MHz FSB). We were disappointed with this outcome, to say the least of it, so we decided to take another try in advanced mode. This time we managed to get 130MHz FSB and as soon as we set this value equal to 133MHz, the system crashed. In other words, the maximum we achieved on Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E was only 780MHz core frequency. Unfortunately, this result is much lower than the frequencies we reached with the same CPU on other i815 based mainboards. This fiasco is very likely to be connected with Easy Tune III utility and not with the mainboard and hopefully next programs will allow achieving more in terms of CPU overclocking. And in the meanwhile, Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E hardly suits for overclocking purposes.

Unfortunately, we have to state that Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E can't boast super high performance though we are used to regarding Gigabyte mainboards as really fast products. However, speed characteristics aren't the main argument when you choose a mainboard from a range of products based on the same chipset. The performances of different products differ so much, that you can't rely only on the benchmarks when selecting the right board. It's much more important to pay attention to the special features of a product.

As for the product's stability, Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E proved one of the most stable and reliable i815 based mainboards.

Hardware-One brengt ons een review van de Sony NW-MS7 MP3 Walkman die gebruikt maakt van 64MB Memory Sticks. De unit ziet er vrij aardig uit maar dat bleek naast de redelijk goede geluidskwaliteit helaas een van de weinige pluspunten te zijn. Batterijen gaan maar amper 4 uur mee en de de Memory Stick is uitgerust met een copyright beveiliging. De bijgeleverde software was verder erg gebruik-onvriendelijk en de USB connector voelde nogal gammel. De onlangs aangekondigde Clik! MP3 spelers van o.a. Iomega lijken dus alsnog een betere oplossing om je MP3's de straat mee op te nemen...

Things certainly don’t look too rosy for Sony’s first solid-state music device. You would think that with all the experience in building the first Walkman, and the numerous Walkmen (or is it Walkmans?) in their various forms (MD, CD etc) since then, Sony would have gotten their first attempt at a solid-state version right.

Sadly this is not the case. The battery life is terrible, the software interface needs a lot of work, and the secure music format makes life for average no-pirate Joe a real pain when uploading, downloading and encoding ATRAC-3 files.

To be fair to Sony, the sound quality is very good, and the build quality is also quite good. But I still have my doubts about the USB connector clip. Some tactile release mechanism would have made the whole unit much more robust.

My advice? If you haven’t already decided between MD and MP3, I would recommend the MD wholeheartedly. But if you already have a backlog of MP3 files in your PC, and are contemplating the Sony, then please run, don’t walk, as far away as you possibly can from the Sony MS7 and get yourself any half-decent portable MP3 player, saving yourself some grief and aggravation in the process. Life is just too short.

De mannen van Tech Gods hebben een kleine review geschreven van de Labtec ATX-5820 speakerset bestaande uit twee boxen en een subwoofer, goed voor samen 70watt aan herrie. Uit de onderstaande reacties kunnen we opmaken dat de geluidskwaliteit van dit setje zeer goed is:

After untangling myself from the multitude of wires, I decided to give these puppies a trial run with something soft. I chose Simon and Garfunkle's The Sound of Silence. The sound was as clear as day and it just sounded great! I decided I'd bump it up a notch and revved up WinAmp to play some Rammstein. Oooooh... nothing like some bopping around to heavy guitar. Again, the sound was great. I figured well, the high and midrange sounded good... time to see how long these things can go. Time for Dan's ultimate test: Wu-Tang Clan! Nothing like some East-coast thumpin' shiznitz to see if these'll crack or not. I turned the bass knob all the way up, turned the speaker volume to about 75%, cranked up the volume control in Windows, and let 'er rip. Lo and behold, the bass was so strong, I felt the vibrations in the floor over 15ft away. Yet, with the bass as strong as it was, there was absolutely NO distortion whatsoever. Incredible...

So now that we know that the ATX-5820's can pound music like hell, what about that Surround Sound that's part of 'em? Hmmm... I dropped in my copy of the Matrix on DVD and skipped to the scene where Neo and Trinity enter the secured building on the ground floor and let loose a can of whoop-ass. Cranked those speakers up once again, and turned the 3D Surround all the way up, slid my chair about 6 feet back from my desk, and waited... All I can say is the ATX-5820 is like WHOA! It was great!!! It sounded as if I were in my own little personal theatre. The sound completely enveloped me and sounded just as good as if I were really surrounded by speakers.

De geruchten dat Microsoft zou werken aan Linux-versies van bepaalde programma's (o.a. MS Office), zijn volgens BetaNews gisteren door Microsoft ontkend. Het bedrijf zegt dat het niveau van Linux niet volwassen genoeg is om een Office-versie ervoor uit te brengen die aan de verwachtingen van de klanten kan voldoen. Met deze uitspraak zal Microsoft zich weer heel wat commentaar van Linux-voorstanders op de hals halen:

After reports surfaced yesterday claiming the software giant is working on porting applications to Linux, Microsoft sent word to BetaNews denying the rumors, specifically touching on Office. "No, Microsoft does not have plans to offer a Linux version of Office," wrote a Microsoft spokesperson. Similar rumors also appeared earlier this year, after Microsoft requested Linux developers on their job site.

Microsoft added, "Based on the extensive research that we do across many types of productivity application users, we're hearing that today Linux does not offer customers the necessary infrastructure for a productivity suite like Office and we do not feel the level of operating system services is mature enough that we could offer a release of Office that would meet customer expectations. However, we are always continuing to evaluate the marketplace and base our development on the needs that customers express."

We mochten van NE2000 een email ontvangen met een officieel statement aangaande de geruchten dat internetsponsor BIT de internettoegang zou afknijpen, wegens hack activiteiten vanuit het NE2000 netwerk. Hier het mailtje:

Als organisatie staan wij op dit moment geheel achter het besluit van Business Internet Trends (BIT) om de internetverbinding van NE2000 af te sluiten. Wij zijn het niet eens met verschillende hack-pogingen vanaf het terrein van NE2000.

Het evenement NE2000 had onder andere als bedoeling om jongeren meer bekendheid te geven met security en technische zaken gerelateerd aan computernetwerken. Het was niet onze bedoeling om de mogelijkheid te bieden om anoniem misdrijven en/of pogingen tot misdrijven te plegen op internet.

Helaas zijn de aangeboden faciliteiten wel misbruikt voor illegale doeleinden. Wij zijn van mening dat wij dit soort praktijken niet kunnen tolereren, daarom zijn wij het voor 100 procent eens met de beslissing van BIT om de verbinding met het internet af te sluiten.

De NE2000 organisatie betreurt het dat wij en onze hoofdsponser BIT hierdoor negatieve publiciteit heeft gekregen. Tevens betreuren wij het feit dat we op het evenement deze faciliteiten verder niet meer beschikbaar kunnen stellen.

De internetverbinding zal met zekerheid tot morgen ochtend afgesloten blijven. Morgen ochtend zal BIT uitsluitsel geven over het herstellen van de verbinding.

Voor ons als organisatie geldt echter dat wij de verbinding niet hersteld
willen hebben als wij niet de garantie hebben dat het niet weer gebeurt.

Ach ja, dan doe je het maar even zonder internet. Ook gingen er geruchten rond dat er bij sommige NE2000 gangers plannen waren om Tweakers.net te defacen. Daar hoeven we in ieder geval niet meer bang voor te zijn .
